Transforming tomorrow
Yes, it’s that time of the year again: time to head to the Royal Victoria Dock in London Docklands for the highly anticipated GEO Business and Digital Construction Week 2024. These two co-located events promise to be a beacon of innovation and insight for everyone interested in the future of geospatial technology. Here at GIM International, we believe these events offer a great opportunity to explore how our sector can contribute to addressing societal challenges. One highlight will be the keynote address by Aaron Addison from the World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC), presenting a visionary outlook on the transformative potential of geospatial data across sectors such as urban planning and environmental conservation. Addison will emphasize the critical role of artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud computing in revolutionizing data analytics and visualization. He will also touch on the importance of standardized data formats and open-source platforms in improving interoperability and maximizing the utility of geospatial information. With his message revolving around a forward-thinking mindset, continuous adaptation and exploration, and fostering innovation and collaboration, Addison’s insights are set to inspire participants to harness emerging technologies and cultivate partnerships for a more sustainable and resilient future.
Attendees can also look forward to Matthew White’s presentation on smarter data integration and quality for infrastructure projects. As the head of built environment at 1Spatial, White will discuss the complexities of managing data from multiple stakeholders in strategic infrastructure projects. He will address challenges related to integrating and quality-checking data from various sources, emphasizing the need for defined standards and structures to improve data accuracy and consistency. White’s insights will be illustrated by a case study about the Environment Agency, showcasing ways to enhance data integration and quality for better
infrastructure decision-making. Another not-to-be-missed session is Fergus Craig’s discussion on automated monitoring with remote sensing. As co-chair of the Association for Geographic Information (AGI), Craig will explore how deep learning and interferometric syntheticaperture radar (InSAR) techniques can be applied at scale to remotely monitor infrastructure assets such as dams and bridges. His session includes a live demonstration of a web-based asset monitoring application using Sentinel 2 satellite data, offering practical insights into the application of these advanced technologies. Last but not least, Ryan Clarke from Turner & Townsend will examine the integration of building information modelling (BIM) with spatial computing for enhanced data visualization and analytics. Clarke will explore how spatial computing can overlay critical data onto BIM models, revolutionizing design, construction and facility management. Through intriguing real-world examples, Clarke will highlight the immense benefits and future possibilities of merging these technologies. This is just a glimpse of the highly varied and relevant programme at GEO Business and Digital Construction Week 2024. Beyond the sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to explore an extensive exhibition showcasing the latest methods and techniques in the geospatial and architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sectors. The event also promises great networking opportunities, making it a mustattend occasion for anyone in the field. With so much to offer, the two days at London ExCel are set to be both enjoyable and enlightening.

questions to... Oliver Hughes, event director
In this Q&A with Oliver Hughes, event director for GEO Business and Digital Construction Week, we discuss the advantages of co-locating the two events, why GEO Business is a standout event for geospatial industry professionals, and the not-to-bemissed highlights. Hughes shares his insights into the anticipated trends such as AI and sustainability, and the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange.
What benefits do you anticipate from co-locating GEO Business and Digital Construction Week?
Hosting GEO Business and Digital Construction Week together at the same venue creates a unique opportunity for collaboration and knowledge exchange. Professionals from both the geospatial and construction sectors can share insights, discover synergies and explore innovative solutions that benefit both industries. It’s all about fostering connections and driving positive change through cross-industry collaboration.
What trends do you anticipate for this year’s edition of GEO Business?
We see several key trends that reflect the ongoing evolution of the geospatial industry. These include advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, the growing role of uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs or ‘drones’) in data collection and analysis, and a continued focus on sustainability and environmental impact assessments. These trends underscore the importance of staying ahead of the curve and embracing innovation to address current and future challenges.
What are the not-to-be-missed features for attendees?
Attendees absolutely shouldn’t miss our
seminar and conference programme, which offers a diverse lineup of sessions covering the latest trends, innovations and best practices in the geospatial industry. These sessions provide knowledge and ideas that can help attendees gain a competitive edge and drive success in their respective fields. Additionally, visitors should take advantage of the networking opportunities that are available. At the GEO Connect meeting hub, for example, attendees can connect with industry peers and experts, share ideas and forge partnerships. And don’t forget the stand parties hosted by exhibitors. These social events are a great way to exchange thoughts and build new contacts in a less formal setting.
Talking of the programme, what are some of the key highlights?
Our programme is designed to provide attendees with valuable insights, practical knowledge and networking opportunities. From expert-led sessions and workshops to hands-on demonstrations, there’s something for everyone at GEO Business. Highlights include the Drone & UAV Theatre and the Satellite Applications Theatre.
As the organizing team, how do you ensure that this event sets itself apart?
Differentiating GEO Business from other events is about creating a unique and valuable experience for attendees. We focus on delivering high-quality content, fostering meaningful connections and providing opportunities for collaboration and learning. Our approach is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where geospatial industry professionals can come together to share ideas, gain insights and drive innovation forward.
