HELLO!
About me

My name is Genine de Winnaar, and I am currently studying towards my Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design. I enjoy the process of creating a product and seeing it come to life, from the initial concept through to the final production. I like to find small ways of making life feel less mundane, and often this comes through experiencing fun and creative packaging, which makes my day a little brighter. In the same way I hope my designs not only communicate clearly and effectively, but also bring a sense of delight to the user’s experience.
I have a range of creative hobbies, including drawing, multimedia art, and sculpting characters from clay. I enjoy a good mystery series and love solving puzzles. I am drawn to nature, which I explore during camping trips where I volunteer as a counsellor for young teenagers.

01 Depression Awareness
Using well crafted typographic designs, I needed to provide information for an awareness campaign. Making a poster and booklet that combine educational content with engaging design. I decided to create an awareness campaign for depression, with a focus on students in university. I centered my campaign around a sombre, numb feeling that was conveyed with the colour palette in the poster, then using gold as an accent in the brochure to show there is still hope for recovery. Alongside the paper brochure, I also designed an interactive online version.

01 Depression Awareness
Continuing the campaign. I was tasked to create four sample cards for a deck of tip cards. The deck consists of four types of cards, namely, Gratitude Prompt cards, Self Care Activity cards, Mindfulness Exercise cards, and Motivational Quote cards. I designed one of each. I expanded the colour palette more for the cards to show the growth and positive change that can happen while recovering. I made the box holding the deck of cards, recognisable as the poster to ensure consistency within the campaign.

02 Java Junction Cafe
Centering around the rebranding of a coffee shop that supports local animal shelters, with a cozy, homely feel. A key feature of the coffee shop is that it is designed with night owls in mind, and is therefore open even after the sun goes down. I was tasked with creating a new logo, which includes a new brand identity. This is the one page CI guide that showcases the combination of warm, cozy browns and calming deep blues, resulting in a comfortable balance.

02 Java Junction Cafe
After designing the brand identity, I was tasked with creating packaging that would hypothetically be sold in the cafe and in stores. I designed with the intention to stand out in store and to capture the atmosphere of the cafe at night. The final packaging shows the comfort there is to find after sundown, while easily distinguishing between blends.

03 Bookcover & Slipcase
When tasked with designing a book cover, a dust jacket and a pattern for inside a book, I chose a series consisting of two books, when presented with the choices. The book’s genre is an urban fantasy set in South Africa. I like the different atmosphere of each book in the series as the story progresses, and decided to showcase that change not only in the design of the cover art itself, but with the contrasting colours, creating a subconscious different expectation for each book without spoiling anything. The art on the cover is not a scene in the book itself, but a metaphorical outlook on the emotional turmoil the main character is experiencing. The buildings, though, are real locations mentioned in the book.

03 Bookcover & Slipcase
After creating designs for the book covers, dust jackets, and front page patterns, I was required to create a slipcase to hold both books of the series. I combined the patterns of the book covers and the designs on the dust jackets into one illustration to complement both. I kept the contrast of the books and their stories while designing the slipcase, and made it so the designs connect seamlessly. I kept the character on the tightrope to show his balance between emotional states and stress caused by events happening in both books. Therefore, the slipcase shows both book’s stories while allowing the books to remain coherent and able to stand out when in the slipcase.

04 Five Roses Fruit Infusions
I made a product that was not available as a single serving, in packaging that made it practical, convenient and aesthetic as a single serve item. Solving subtle frustrations by making single serving tea envelopes from the Five Roses Fruit-Flavoured Infusions range easier to travel with and quick to find in a dark purse or bag. Distinct colours and illustrations reflect each flavoured infusion’s character for easy recognition. The collection offers every flavour in a single purchase. The product proposal mentioned below shows more of my thoughts and considerations when creating the packaging.
