The Colours of Beltane
Gemstones for Brighter Days
Words by Clare Webster
As April turns to May, Beltane marks the midpoint between spring and summer. Rooted in Celtic tradition, it was a festival of fire and fertility – bonfires blazing and ribbons dancing around the maypole as communities welcomed brighter days. It’s a celebration of warmth, colour and renewal – not unlike the shift in jewellery boxes.
As outfits grow lighter and brighter, gemstones naturally follow suit. Beltane invites us to choose stones that capture the fire, bloom and promise of the months ahead.
Kindled in Red
THE FLAME WITHIN
As Beltane bonfires once lit the hilltops at dusk, red gemstones glow with that same celebratory warmth. From Ruby’s chromiumrich brilliance to Garnet’s smouldering depth, these fiery stones have long symbolised vitality and courage. Worn in spring, red gems feel like a spark of intention – bold, energising and full of life.

NATURE’S PROMISE OF RENEWAL
Beltane marks the Earth at its most abundant, and green gemstones echo that lush awakening. Emerald’s velvety richness and Peridot’s fresh, sunlit hue are vivid examples, their colour shaped by trace elements within the Earth. Worn as a celebration of the season, green gems invite growth, balance and flourishing possibility.

Love, Loyalty, and Legacy
Jewellery Symbols That Endure
Words by Vanessa Gorman
Throughout history, jewellery has been a language of love, identity, and connection. Passed from one era to the next, they connect personal stories to a shared human past, allowing what we wear today to echo beliefs thousands of years old.
Knots
A meaningful expression of eternal connection and unity
Knots are among the earliest jewellery motifs, appearing in ancient Celtic, Asian, and Mediterranean cultures. Their unbroken lines symbolised eternity, connection, and enduring bonds. Celtic knotwork reflected the cycle of life, death, and rebirth; Chinese knots were worn for good fortune and longevity; and Greek and Roman designs linked knots with binding love and marital fidelity.

Hearts
An iconic symbol of enduring love and devotion
Universally recognised as a symbol of love, the heart’s earliest form is thought to derive from the seed pod of the silphium plant, depicted in the ancient world as early as classical Greek and Roman times and associated with fertility. Over time, this shape evolved through medieval European religious imagery and courtly love traditions, before becoming firmly embedded in romantic jewellery by the Victorian era as a symbol of love, devotion and mourning.
Snakes
A timeless emblem of protection, renewal, and eternal love
Snakes have appeared in jewellery since ancient Egypt, where they symbolised divine authority, protection, and rebirth. Greek and Roman cultures adopted the serpent as a sign of healing, wisdom, and eternity. The motif surged in popularity during the Victorian era after Queen Victoria received a snake engagement ring, redefining it as a symbol of everlasting love.

Circles
An age-old expression of enduring bonds through time
One of the oldest symbols in jewellery, the Shen ring originated in ancient Egypt, where its unbroken circle represented the sun, protection, and eternal life. The Romans later adopted this form for wedding rings, symbolising unity and permanence. Today, the infinity symbol carries this ancient language forward as a modern expression of enduring love and connection.
Sun, Moon, and Stars
A meaningful emblem of celestial light and guidance
Celestial symbols date back to the earliest civilisations. In Egyptian and Incan jewellery, the sun represented power and regeneration; Greek and Roman adornment linked the moon to femininity and cycles; and stars served as talismans for guidance and hope. These motifs re-emerged strongly during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, celebrating mystery, romance, and modernity.

From Cubic Zirconia to Lab Grown Diamonds
Words by Abigail Brown

Breaking through in the 1970s, Cubic Zirconia was revolutionary as one of the very first synthetic Diamond alternatives; the jewellery industry was stunned.
Labs were very quickly able to create larger, clearer stones with little to no inclusions. It took the jewellery world by storm; used in fine jewellery and engagement rings, it gained popularity as a cheaper alternative to its counterpart.
Sound familiar? Lab-grown Diamonds began gaining market popularity in the late 2010s, and by 2020, they went from niche to mainstream.
The parallels with Cubic Zirconia are striking. Similarly, production of CZ skyrocketed in the 80s as labs began to develop their ‘skull melting’ technique. This flooded the

.
market; in just four years, the wholesale price per faceted carat had fallen from an initial $40 to $4 (GIA).
The lesson was clear. Without natural rarity, Cubic Zirconia became a commodity rather than a luxury. Mass production made it widely accessible.
Soon, CZ was everywhere. From fine jewellery counters, it moved into fast fashion and costume pieces, and today, it can be found in Claire’s or on a rotating display stand in the clothing aisle of your local supermarket.
It then begs the question, what does the future hold for lab-grown Diamonds?
Values have already fallen significantly, reportedly around 74% in the past five years (Accio Investment). And where has it ended up? Our US customers can visit their local Walmart to buy lab-grown Diamonds.
Lab-grown Diamonds may share the name. But they don’t share the rarity, the history, or the value.
Natural Diamonds aren’t manufactured – they’re discovered – and that changes everything.

Gems That Come Alive in the Light
Words by Toby Cavill
S ome gemstones don’t just sparkle in the light – they transform.
Put them under sunlight or ultraviolet light and something deeper happens; colours intensify, hidden hues appear, or the whole gem seems to glow. At the heart of this magic are two natural phenomena: fluorescence and phosphorescence.
Sunlight has a way of exposing what indoor lighting cannot. In some gems, that change is subtle. In others, it’s spectacular.

Alexandrite
Alexandrite is famed for one of gemology’s most extraordinary optical effects: colour change.
In daylight, it reveals cooler green to teal tones. Under indoor lighting, those hues shift towards rich purples and reds. The transformation can feel almost impossible – as though you are looking at two different gems.
Sunlight draws out its fresher, greener character, making the shift even more dramatic once you step back inside. It remains one of nature’s most captivating visual tricks.

Opal
Opal doesn’t rely on fluorescence – its magic lies in playof-colour. In full-spectrum sunlight, that display becomes dramatically more vivid and striking to the eye.
Reds burn hotter, greens sharpen, blues flash electric. as the stone moves, light travels across its internal structure, igniting shifting ribbons and sparks of colour within. What might seem gentle indoors becomes alive and kinetic outside, almost breathing with light.
Few gemstones respond to changing light quite as theatrically or as mesmerisingly as Opal.
Gahcho Kué Diamond
Certain Diamonds, including those from the Gahcho Kué Mine, display striking blue fluorescence in natural light.
Outdoors, these stones can appear brighter and even whiter, as daylight activates a cool blue glow within the crystal. It’s a subtle effect, but once you’ve seen it, you’ll never forget it. It’s a quiet enhancement, one that gives the Diamond an added vitality.
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT GAHCHO KUÉ FLUORESCENCE

Other gems worth noting: Sunlight draws out Kunzite’s shifting pink-to-violet hues, while Sphalerite erupts with intense rainbow fire thanks to its remarkable dispersion.

Birthstones
APRIL – MAY – JUNE
Words by Louise Knight
Birthstones have been revered as powerful talismans for as long as we can remember.

Woven through centuries of myth and meaning, each gem is linked to a month and believed to carry its own unique energy. Their story begins with the 12 sacred stones of the Breastplate of Aaron, said to hold deep spiritual symbolism.
Over time, these gems have remained personal emblems, chosen for both their beauty and significance. Birthstones mark milestones and celebrate individual spirit.
This season, we turn to Diamond, the eternal light of April; Emerald, the vibrant heart of May; and Pearl, the luminous soul of June.
DIAMOND
Formed under extreme pressure, Diamond is a testament to strength, brilliance, and enduring love.
Deriving its name from the Greek term ‘adamas’, meaning ‘unbreakable’, Diamond has adorned royalty, marked life’s milestones, and captured the light for centuries. Ancient cultures believed it held protective powers, offering courage and clarity to its wearer.
As April’s birthstone, Diamond is said to represent resilience, purity, and everlasting devotion. Its unrivalled sparkle makes it a meaningful emblem of strength that shines through every season of life.

With its lush green hue and timeless allure, Emerald has long been associated with renewal, wisdom, and the flourishing of the heart.
Revered by ancient civilisations – from Egyptian pharaohs to Incan emperors – Emerald was believed to grant foresight, prosperity, and protection. Cleopatra herself was said to favour the gem, captivated by its vibrant colour that mirrors the richness of nature in full bloom.
As May’s birthstone, Emerald symbolises growth, hope, and enduring love. Its verdant glow feels perfectly attuned to spring’s awakening, making it a powerful token of new beginnings and heartfelt connection.

PEARL June
ALTERNATIVES:
Unlike any other gemstone, Pearl is born of the sea – a natural wonder shaped by time, patience, and quiet transformation. For centuries, pearls have symbolised purity, wisdom, and serenity. In ancient Rome, they were regarded as the ultimate status symbol; in Eastern traditions, they were believed to offer protection and attract good fortune. Their soft, luminous sheen has long been associated with calm strength and effortless elegance.
As June’s birthstone, Pearl represents authenticity and inner beauty. Gentle yet radiant, it serves as a reminder that something truly precious can emerge from life’s most unexpected moments.

Jewellery Photography Tips

Take your jewellery photos to the next level. Gemporia photographers, Harriet and Fran, reveal their top smartphone photography tips!
Always use natural light! Natural light gives your jewellery a softer, more flattering shine and helps bring out all those beautiful details. Try to avoid harsh indoor lighting or camera flash.
The time of day really makes a difference – if you can, take your photo early in the morning or in late afternoon, when the light is warmer and gentler. This will give your piece a lovely, natural glow.
If the sunlight feels too bright, don’t worry! Just step into a lightly shaded spot to help reduce glare – this will also make your jewellery much easier to photograph clearly.

Use a clean, neutral surface, like stone, fabric, or even your hand. Keeping the background simple helps your jewellery stand out and be the main focus of your photo.

Keep an eye on the details – tap your phone screen to focus on the gemstone or the finer parts of the piece, so everything looks sharp and crisp.

Let the sparkle shine naturally – try moving the jewellery slightly and taking lots of photos until the light catches it just right. Sometimes a tiny change in angle makes all the difference!

Finally, don’t be afraid to get creative and have fun with it!

Ever felt let down by health advice?
I’ve spent years in the health and wellness space, and one thing kept bothering me.
There’s no shortage of information. Diets, programmes, apps, books — we’re drowning in it. And yet people are still struggling. Still confused. Still starting over on Mondays.
I didn’t build Clubwell because there wasn’t enough health content in the world. I built it because none of it was working together.
Clubwell is what happens when education, community, real tools, and daily accountability all live in one place. It’s not a quick fix, and it’s not designed to be. It’s designed to actually work — long term, in real life, for real people.

I’m proud of what we’ve built. And I’d love for you to be part of it.
