arch is National Colorectal Cancer Month. Since the disease — which affects the colon and/or rectum — is the second deadliest cancer in the U.S., this time of year is when we at DAP Health advocate for routine screening (starting at age 45). Despite how common this cancer is, many people still believe persistent myths about it. These can stop people from getting screened for the illness, detecting it early, and receiving lifesaving treatment. So, let’s clear up the facts.
Truth: While colorectal cancer is more common in older adults, younger people can get it too. In recent years, more people under age 50 have been diagnosed. That’s why doctors now recommend starting regular screening at age 45 for most adults. Some people may need screening even earlier if they have a family history or certain health condi-
tions. No matter what your age, talk to your DAP Health primary care clinician if you have symptoms like stomach pain, blood in your stool, or changes in bathroom habits.
Truth: Colorectal cancer often has no symptoms at first. Many people feel perfectly healthy when cancer is just starting. Screening tests can find cancer early — before symptoms appear. They can also find small growths called polyps, which can be removed before they turn into cancer. Feeling fine does not mean you are risk-free. Screening saves lives.
Truth: Most people say colonoscopies are not painful. During the test, patients are given medicine to help them relax or sleep. Many people don’t remember the test at all. While preparing for the test (by using medication the night before to empty out the bowels) can be uncomfortable and/or annoying, it’s truly no big deal — and well worth it. There are also other screening options, like stool-based tools such as Cologuard, which test for hidden bleeding and abnormal DNA markers associated with polyps or cancer cells. Your DAP Health clinician can help you choose what’s best for you.
Truth: Colorectal cancer doesn’t discriminate by gender. Anyone can develop colorectal cancer. Risk depends on many factors, including age, family history,
diet, smoking, alcohol use, and access to health care. So, all people — no matter their gender — should follow screening guidelines and talk with their DAP Health clinician about their risk.
Truth: When found early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable. Many people survive, especially when it’s caught early through screening. Treatment options have improved, and people can live long, healthy lives after diagnosis. Early detection gives patients more choices and better outcomes. That’s why screening and regular checkups are so important.
“Colorectal cancer myths can cause fear or delay care — but facts save lives,” concludes DAP Health Chief Medical Officer Joseph Aquilina, MD, MBA. “Screening, early detection, and open conversations with your DAP Health clinician can make a real difference. If you are age 45 or older — or have risk factors — ask about screening. It’s a simple step that can protect your health and your future. For you, and for those you love who want you here with them for as long as possible.”
To get a colonoscopy referral, or to obtain a Cologuard test, please speak to your DAP Health primary care clinician.

Perceptions amuse us and delude us. We may think we know someone, we categorize them in our minds, yet we miss the core essence of who they really are. But David Archuleta is breaking the facade and bringing fans into his romantic realm of reality.
Let’s dive deeper with David Archuleta.
He maneuvers the turbulent waters of fame, religion, and sensuality so spectacularly swimmingly. After establishing himself as the boy-next-door on American Idol, Archuleta publicly identified as queer and watched his church support float away. But his resilience is robust, his talent is as mighty as the Mississippi, and his voice surges with sensuality.
“It’s not like a full on sex EP,” Archuleta coos humbly. “but I feel like I was just being present in my body.”
Indeed, his sinewy frame hypno-
tizes viewers in various videos from the deluxe edition of Earthly Delights Archuleta soars like an angel, grooves like a god, and seduces the audience every time he gazes into the lens. “I made room for myself to grow with this EP and allowed myself to navigate the flirty nature of just living. Living life and feeling confident.”
Downshifting into aw-shucks mode, Archuleta admits, “I’m not gonna lie, I didn’t know I was capable of these emotions. I didn’t know it was in me, so I was proud to discover it and play in that place with Earthly Delights.”
Authenticity is the ultimate aphrodisiac, and Archuleta flexes his truth like a peacock broadcasting its brilliance. By raising his voice, he silences the villains… but finding that voice was no simple task. “I have always wanted to sing in Spanish, from the very first album I released when I was 17. I recorded my song Crush in Spanish and I was like I would love to
release this, but for whatever reason my record label didn’t want to and they shelved it.” Putting a personal punctuation to his point, Archuleta continues, “They didn’t wanna spend their time or money investing in my Latin side.”
Fast forward to the queer-and-now. “I’m just in a place where, you know what? Why not do it? Let’s explore a little bit. I’m Hispanic. Half of my day, I’m around Hispanic people, so it’s a part of me. I’m like, let’s do Spanglish. That’s how I live my life anyways; I live a very Spanglish life day to day. It’s about being yourself. That needs to come out.”
So Archuleta teamed up with Colombian sensation Esteman to create a bilingual version of his barnburner Crème Brûlée. The lyrics swirl effortlessly between languages, orientations, and delectable metaphors, equating the titular dessert with a heaping helping of eroticism. Oh no, there goes all of your clothes. Oh yes, you will go loco for Crème Brûlée.
Gyrating on down the playlist, we discuss another pop confection from the EP: Dulce Amor. Part love ballad, part overwhelming obsession, and all Archuleta, this velvety concoction massages your eardrums before working its way into your brain, heart, and beyond.
Archuleta gushes about his inspiration for the swooning single. “Blue is, I feel, one of the greatest albums ever made. It’s so expressive, it’s just so well done and, funnily enough, in the studio, there was a painting of Joni Mitchell. I was like, ‘That Blue album was lifechanging’ and I was like, ‘Can we just say that? Can we just mention her?’ I feel like she’s worth mentioning.”
So, Archuleta worked with his creative team to rework the lyrics accordingly.
“We reference some of her most iconic songs ever from that album. They talk about yearning and longing for something, cause it’s like ‘I could drink a case of you’ or like ‘I wish I had a river I could skate away on.’ It was just longing. That was symbolism with that line choice, just to say you want this person, you’re craving them, they’re so sweet. They’re Dulce Amor, it’s a sweet love that you’re craving and you want more of.”
And then something magical happens: David Archuleta breaks into song and bursts our interviewer into joy.
“You’re my favorite place, El Pescador. End of day, been two weeks, and nothing tastes the same. You’re my favorite record, Joni Mitchell Blue. Wish I had a river, had a case of you.”
When I gay-gasp at the fact that a gold record selling, umpteen awardwinning artist just crooned spontaneously, Archuleta responds in kind. “I didn’t even realize I sang. Did I sing?”
Um, heck yeah you sang.
“Oh my gosh!” exclaims Archuleta. “My friends always tell me that. They’re like, ‘oh I love it when he just randomly started singing.’ I’m like I don’t even realize I’m doing it. Holy cow.”
Bucket list item: accomplished.

And he’s gonna sing to you tooLGBT+ Days are coming to Cathedral City, California from March 6th to March 8th and Archuleta is the capitalP Proud headliner. “I look at Pride as celebratory, so for me it’s really fun to have a celebratory take on a show, ‘cause I’m known for singing a lot of ballads and being a vocalist, which is what I do, but it’s also fun to just have dancing. I love to dance, I love to go out, I’m Hispanic so it just feels so good and therapeutic to be somewhere where you can just let your hair down and just let loose and not worry about what other people think and just dance.”
For fans who yearn to hear the charttoppers that made David Archuleta famous, you’re in luck. He’s not dancing away from his roots but rather cultivating them into a groovy garden that flourishes into a towering queer monument to his range. “I just hope people come ready to have a good time and celebrate and party and I might throw a more emotional song in there, so they’ll have that too, along with the fun stuff. Some dancing. Some choreography.”
Variety and inclusiveness pulse through every sentiment Archuleta utters. Even as he paints a picture of a disco utopia, he stops to consider the introverts out there who may not instinctively crave the rave scene. “If you don’t like to socialize, at least you could be there and just know like ‘hey all these people are celebrating who I am’ and that’s really beautiful.”
Add writer to his resume as well. That’s right, Archuleta has triumphantly documented his rift with the LDS Church in his new memoir Devout: Losing My Faith to Find Myself. The achingly honest book delves into sensitive subjects like “Me leaving my community that I loved, it was my tribe. It was my safe place. It was where I thought I could belong to an extent.”
Archuleta was drowning in doubt before he had his empowering epiphany. “I realized that no, I don’t have any other choice. I have to do this. I have to just be honest with myself and be
true. Even if that means walking away from the community that I love.”
Devout gives fans more than just a riveting account of their fave idol’s rise to fame and his controversial comingout story; it also gives them the keys to unlock their own destiny. “You have to have so much strength to be able to walk away from something that was your entire support system into nothing, essentially.”
Despite how confident he may sound, Archuleta admits that when he penned the book, “I didn’t have the whole big picture, necessarily, but I felt like I had enough.”
We ask what advice Archuleta would give his younger self and he delivers a heartfelt response. “The world you’re in right now is just a prelude. You’re not going to find all your answers right now and that’s alright and it’s OK to challenge the world.” Speaking directly to the magnificent misfit in all of us, he continues, “Don’t let this shock you, but you’re different and you don’t have to be so afraid… I know you’re afraid of disappointing God, but God is going to celebrate that you see yourself as he sees you and how he created you to be.”
But Archuleta rises above the noise to create a next-level connection with his audience.“You’re there to celebrate being you, being queer, being part of the LGBTQ plus community and how much we’ve had to overcome and how much we’ve had to make space for ourselves to have this, to have support systems and to be able to celebrate.”
And now it’s time to strut our solidarity at Cathedral City LGBT+ Days, an outpouring of acceptance, diversity, and camaraderie. “It’s essential to our society to have a sense of community where you feel empowered. If you feel safer, you feel stronger and more motivated, and it’s just nice to know you’re not alone.”
Understatement alert! Loneliness has no place at this plucky Pride festival, which includes a rousing roster of events like drag contests, a drone show,

and the infamous bed race. That’s right, watch celebrities and silliness tear down the street via ornate mattresses mounted on wheels.
But nothing can steal the spotlight from the Cathedral City LGBT+ Days headliner, who urges guests, “Enjoy the music and move and have fun with people who are like-minded.” It took Archuleta almost two decades to find
his tribe, and we’re a mirthful mix of every ethnicity and gender identity imaginable. His fans hail from all over the world, but they’re delighted to descend on Coachella Valley March 7th for all things Archuleta.

CAMP MORNING WOOD – Palm Springs: There is a new entertainment hotspot in Palm Springs, and it is already a hit. Married couple Lance and Ron Phillips, founders of Desert Theatreworks, previously produced a couple of gay themed plays at the Riviera and the audiences howled that they wanted lightweight gay entertainment as an alternative to the city’s numerous drag shows. The result is The Prism Theatre.
Camp Morning Wood, their first show, is a two-act musical with seven actors and 14 songs. At the start of the show, Randy (Chad Heffelfinger) is sleepily driving a car through the woods and hits a deer. He wanders the woods looking for help, discovers a bed, and goes to sleep. When he wakes, he discovers he’s in an all-male clothing optional camp. The campers are a twink named Derek (Jeffrey A. Johns, a swing from the off-Broadway production); a bear (Matt LeGrande); the well-endowed Titus (e. Talley II); Jacques, a Frenchman who just can’t keep his clothes on (Jake Farnum); and Kincaid (Prince Alex), a sexy rapping dancer. Problems come to the camp when Senator Snatch (Barrett D. Cowell) decides to close the camp down, but like some real DC senators, he just can’t avoid the dark side.
The show was cast and rehearsed in Hollywood, so the producers had a much larger (and dare I say younger) collection of men to choose from. Director Lance Phillips fully plays up the gay stereotypes, and the audience laps up every nuance and double entendre. We’ve had glimpses of many body parts already, but the final number, “Bare it All,” does just what the name suggests.
The Prism’s permanent home on Indian Canyon Drive isn’t completed yet so Camp Morning Wood is being presented in a very suitable event center in an industrial park south of the airport. It plays weekends through March 22. It will be followed by The Book of Merman; Snow White and the Seven Bottoms; When Pigs Fly; and Devil Boys from Beyond. Tickets and further information, including season passes, can be found at www.PSPRISM.com.
“CAMP MORNING WOOD, IS A TWO-ACT MUSICAL WITH SEVEN ACTORS AND 14 SONGS.”

INCITATION TO THE DANCE – Hollywood: Some of my favorite and most impactful evenings in the theatre have been at small theatres near Hollywood. Actors’ Equity, the stage actors’ union, allows their members to perform for reduced salaries or even free in theatres which seat fewer than 99 people so that the actors can hone their skills and also be seen by casting agents. The result is that you often see some of the finest actors from around the country who have moved to Hollywood, working their hardest to be seen by casting agencies.
One such small theatre is Theatre West, located between Universal Studios and the Hollywood Bowl. A collective of professional actors, playwrights, directors and technicians, they are the longest continually running professional theatre in Los Angeles. In their 64 years, they have presented over 300 productions.
They are currently presenting Incitation to the Dance a sexy, dark gay comedy that they claim will make you laugh, blush, and maybe want to dance. Malcolm is a film professor teaching a class on Queer Coding in Film Noir. Asher is his husband, depressed as he faces a career crisis. Finn is a determined young man who upends their comfortable world with his provocative blend of sexuality and menace.
As Malcolm reveals the homoerotic undertones in the seminal film Gilda to his class, his personal life threatens to become a mirror image of the tangled trio in the film. Incitation to the Dance is a sexy, dark comedy filled with witty banter, rising sexual tension, stylish dance numbers, and the radiant vitality of Rita Hayworth.
The stage is both the landscape of three minds and a choreographed battlefield. Stylized verbal battles escalate to physical confrontations, characters break the fourth wall, Malcolm’s class probes an overwrought 1940s love triangle, while the dances build in intensity and violence.
Michael Van Duzer, the director and playwright, and actors Michael Gabiano, David Mingrino and Casey Alcoser have all been involved in hundreds of stage productions and numerous television shows. I’m looking forward to seeing them up close and personal at Theatre West. Plays through 3/15. Tickets at www.eventbrite.com.
“A SEXY, DARK GAY COMEDY THAT THEY CLAIM WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH, BLUSH, AND MAYBE WANT TO DANCE.”

MJ THE MUSICAL – Various: This stylized story of Michael Jackson during the preparation of his Dangerous world tour has been playing on Broadway since February 2022. It has grossed over $300,000,000 and still manages to pull in decent houses. The First National Tour has been on the road for quite a while and is making their second visit to California. The show features music by Jackson, a book by Lynn Notage, and was directed and choreographed by Chirstopher Wheeldon. It won Tony Awards for Myles Frost as Best Actor in a Musical (he’s not in the touring company), Best Choreography, and Best Sound and Lighting Design.
The musical starts with a group of dancers practicing for Jackson’s world tour, two days before it opens in Munich. Michael enters and watches the group before taking his position in front of them. He then discusses his creative ideas with the show’s director. A reporter and her cameraman arrive which gives Michael a chance to recount some of the terrors he suffered as a child as well as his memories of Berry Gordy placing his family’s hits on his Motown label. He also discusses his collaboration with Quincy Jones and recording his albums Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad which Jones produced.
His interview with the reporter lasts through most of the show and allows him to recant the horrific accident when his hair caught on fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial. He also explains how emotional he feels about being loved by fans but being teased in the newspapers.
The musical is a combination of Jackson sharing intimate stories about his career, interspersed with stunning production numbers of his greatest hits. What’s not to like?
MJ The Musical plays the San Francisco Orpheum 3/24 – 4/5; Sacramento SAFE Performing Arts Center 4/8 – 19; Hollywood Pantages 4/21 – 5/3 and San Diego Civic 5/5-10.
“THE MUSICAL STARTS WITH A GROUP OF DANCERS PRACTICING FOR JACKSON’S WORLD TOUR, TWO DAYS BEFORE IT OPENS IN MUNICH. MICHAEL ENTERS AND WATCHES THE GROUP BEFORE TAKING HIS POSITION IN FRONT OF THEM.”
BEETLEJUICE – Various: Another touring show returning to the West Coast, Beetlejuice at first sounded a little questionable to me. It was such a great movie (well, at least the first one was), could it really be transferred to the stage? My answer is a resounding “YES!”
With music and lyrics by Eddie Perfect and book by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the musical has a checkered past. It opened on Broadway in 2019 and had to close early in 2020 because of the pandemic. It returned to Broadway in 2022 and ran for barely a year. It then had another return to Broadway from October 2025 until January 2026. The US national Tour began in 2022, and though it hasn’t run continuously, that’s the production that is returning to California. I saw it during its first visit to The Pantages and I have my tickets in hand for its return this month.
The plot of the musical largely follows the 1988 Tim Burton film of the same name and has found a comfortable transition from movie to stage musical. It opens with a somber funeral, but we are quickly introduced to Beetlejuice, a centuries-old demon who is only visible to the living if he can induce them to say his name out loud three times. He tells us we are going to see “A show about death.”
A young couple buys a house, but they are both killed when they fall through rotten floorboards. They remain in the house as ghosts, but their peace is threatened when a new couple moves in. The ghosts summon Beetlejuice to help them scare the new owners out of the house, a task that he fears they will never succeed at.
The humans are all charming and fun, but the evening belongs to Beetlejuice, who delights in breaking the fourth wall and talking directly to the audience. His voice is exactly the scratchy sound that Michael Keaton developed for the film, but he has to do it live eight times per week. It seems an impossible demand to make of an actor’s voice. I remember from the program that about four of the men in the cast are trained to replace him if needed, and I suspect that happens frequently!
I can’t promise you the sexual frenzy that it drove Lauren Boebert to, but Beetlejuice is a fast-paced, constantly funny and entertaining musical. It has added a couple of smaller theatres to its itinerary this time around. Plays The Hollywood Pantages 3/10 - 22; Palm Desert’s Mc Callum 3/24-29; and The San Jose center for the Performing Arts 3/31 - 4/5.
“THE PLOT OF THE MUSICAL LARGELY FOLLOWS THE 1988 TIM BURTON FILM.”

THE UNCOMPROMISING CARE OF
BY KEVIN PERRY

Healthcare is magic, right? That is how we regard any discipline that keeps us safe from the specters of danger, death, and disease. We see doctors and nurses as miracle workers, we marvel at every scientific advancement as if it were divined from the medical gods, and we pray for our loved ones to live long, pain-free lives.
And yet, there’s no such thing as magic. The rigors and research that go into maintaining our collective wellness are exhaustive and exhausting. Each physiological system in our bodies requires dedicated study and acute attention. Experts do not become experts overnight; they pay their dues in the forms of lengthy training, lost sleep, and loads of student loan debt.
In fact, we’ll bet they would sometimes prefer to simply wave a magic wand and heal humanity.
“There is so much that I would have wished had not occurred in the world,” opines Dr. Jason Halperin, an infectious disease specialist at Stonewall Medical Center in Cathedral City. “I would start with: I wish there were no HIV virus at all, but a silver lining of the HIV epidemic is how important community is to overcome an epidemic that really targeted specific communities within the United States and the world. We learned a lot from the HIV epidemic in terms of how to deeply care for those at risk.”
Dr. Halperin galvanizes these lessons into medical gold, transforming every hard-fought breakthrough into progress in practice.
“I have clearly witnessed, as a physician, the power of preventative medicine and there is probably no stronger preventative medicine than vaccination. I could name the patients that I lost during the Covid pandemic… There was so much misinformation, and some of my patients chose not to be vaccinated.”
The line between professional and personal blurs as Halperin audibly mourns the lives of those lost to anti-vax rhetoric. “I will never recommend a vaccine to you that I have not gotten myself or do not plan to get,” he promises. “This is a really tough time for misinformation, and I would even say that there are people with levers of power that are now making access to facts
and information that much harder.”
Calling out the cowards who bully our LGBTQ+ family, the physician gets fiery. “Our trans community is probably being most targeted by this administration, and we are completely standing in solidarity with our trans community.” Dr. Halperin continues, “We are all being directly targeted by the administration. They want to eliminate trans people. They are going after the T and they’re going to go after LGB and Q next, if they’re not already.”
Assault demands action… and action yields activism. Dr. Halperin has spent his life defending our angels and defeating the devils among us. “By 10 years old, I knew there was only one thing I wanted to do in life and that was to work in HIV,” he recounts. “I was really involved with Act Up in New York City where I went to college and then after college I got a job at Doctors without Borders, which was really doing advocacy and strategy of antiretroviral therapy access.”
Flexing his warrior skills, Halperin maximized his impact by relocating to where the need was the greatest. “I was interviewing for jobs and New Orleans at that time had the highest rate of HIV transmission in the country, so I said, ‘that’s where I want to be’.”
Lucky for us, this hero’s cape was about to carry him all the way to SoCal. “After almost 15 years in New Orleans, I felt it was just time for a change,” narrates Dr. Halperin. “I knew the incredible work DAP was doing and I got connected to C.J. Tobe. If you don’t know, C.J. is one of the most incredible members of the DAP team; a radical activist who’s also our Chief Transformation Officer and he explained that they were expanding into San Diego County.”
Halperin was finally home. He discusses his current organization the way you would talk about your first crush - if you eventually married that crush! “DAP has been an unbelievable leader in LGBTQ health nationally. Pre-my arrival, any time I would be at a national conference it was DAP as one of the lead voices for LGBTQ health you know for decades... I am 100% sure by knowing the DAP leadership - and David Brinkman’s leadership especially - is to bring that

level of LGBTQ health all throughout Southern California, to more rural areas, to San Diego County.”
Not to mention the next-level care available right here in Cathedral City.
“We have a full pharmacy that provides everything one would need in a pharmacy, but of course this pharmacy is deeply, deeply committed to HIV and HIV prevention. Upstairs we continue to have a very large Ryan White HIV clinic, so we provide HIV clinical services to every single person in the community, regardless of pay. We also have continued our long-standing commitment to gender-affirming care.”
His work at Stonewall Medical Center is the culmination of collaboration over competition, but it has taken too long to arrive here.
“I’m a member of the HIV Medical Association. hivma.org is a particularly good, trusted resource for accessing health information. In the past, HIVMA saw itself as a radical medical organization within much less radical organizations. I would say that’s changed now. HIVMA is standing alongside the American Association of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the American Association of Family Practice, all speaking with one voice for which vaccinations we all recommend. That level of unity did not exist before… We lost sight of our collective power by arguing amongst ourselves. I’m seeing a lot more collective action and I’m hopeful that that is the lesson we learn from this administration.”
A common enemy has awakened an uncommon camaraderie.
“The small things can’t get in the way anymore,” declares Dr. Halperin. “We are no longer competitors. We are now fighting for our lives.”
His anthemic tone conjures up another inspirational figure, so Dr. Halperin takes the opportunity to quote him lovingly. “I don’t know if you know Gregg Gonsalves. Greg is an amazing activist. He’s out of Yale and I know I’m going a little off subject here but talk about goosebumps! He was just interviewed and he was talking about how he was going to join some of the protests in Minnesota. And someone asked him, ‘are you fearful?’ and he said ‘I f***ing fought a virus that killed every one of my friends. ICE has nothing on me.’ I was like wow. I mean, that’s our history.”
It’s a history that’s still being written by every practitioner and patient who dares to conquer fear and cure the future.
“We have been told over and over again, ‘I’m a gay man. I didn’t have this level of care until I came here.’ Or ‘I’m a woman of trans experience and I’ve never felt welcomed in any health center.’”
For Dr. Jason Halperin, rewards aren’t a matter of bonuses or status; they’re measured by inclusion. “That is our commitment. There’s a lot of work to be done, but that is our commitment.”
Defiant, driven, and passionately compassionate, Dr. Halperin concludes, “Nothing will get in our way.”
Thank you for your tireless dedication and devotion. To us, you will always be medical magic in motion.

pringtime cleanses our hemisphere like a semi-global douche. Out with the winter blues and in with the greenery of fresh, fertile possibilities! As the treachery of the past year melts away, we seek hope on the horizon, a dawning of humanity that promises to eradicate the dreck and darkness that have squeezed us in their icy grip.
SBut wait - that’s not the sunrise. It’s the flicker of a movie projector beckoning us to the theater!
This month’s slate of films are oozing originality, rife with rebellion, and brimming with ballsy bravado. So, bust out your bloomers and usher in a new season of cinema!

Sure, A Clockwork Orange was great, but why aren’t there more *family* films about the dangers of replacing anarchy with fascism? Heel explores this thorny thematic landscape with a twisted tale of justice gone sour. Our misguided man-crush, Stephen Graham, plays a beefy dad who kidnaps a criminal and chains him in the basement to “straighten” him out. Oh, silly society - you can’t change someone’s true nature; you can only make us more defiantly who we are.
But seriously, Stephen Graham - hop on a stepladder and use your stubby fingers to call us (he’s a short li’l nugget of aggro sexiness).
Fair warning to any theater employees responsible for updating the marquee: you’re about to run out of the letter “A” because Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaaaard star in Maggie Gyllenhaaaaaal’s new film The Bride! It’s a monster/mobster/ musical mashup movie in which Frankenstein’s creature digs up a murdered woman in 1930s Chicago to seek vengeance against the men who killed her. Oh, and they dance intermittently. Because who doesn’t want to waltz with a decomposing dame hell-bent on revenge and reeking of rigor mortis?
Attention, lesbians: Hoppers is about a robotic beaver who infiltrates the animal kingdom and uncovers a plot to overthrow humankind. Pixar sinks its robo-beave teeth into this project, enlisting stellar voice tal-

ent like Jon Hamm and Meryl freakin’ Streep! Hmm, maybe we shouldn’t have introduced this segment with lesbian/ beaver jokes. Oh well, live and learn. But that’s where this week’s innovation ends. The other “major” releases include a remake of 1986’s crap-on-ice hockey flick Youngblood and a movie that looks like it was cast in the dregs of the early 90s: has-been heavyweights Milla Jovovich, Matthew Modine and D.B. Sweeney “star” in Protector. Yup, we’ve already forgotten about it. Next!
Fade in: some sappy straight people get into a car accident that changes their lives forev— blah, blah, blahbeddy blah, cue the heartfelt indie music. There, I just saved you the agony of watching Reminders of Him. Fade out.
Did someone order a heaping helping of cinematic cheese? Well then, dig in for Scared to Death, a moviewithin-a-movie about a film crew that summons spookiness aplenty during their haunted hack production. This would generally fall into the straightto-streaming bin except for the fact that Lin Shaye gives us life (and death). She effortlessly weaves the worlds of absurd comedy and jump-scare horror, so we’re thrilled, chilled and killed to see this hybrid hootenanny.
Where are the subtitles? We can’t watch an Irish soccer biopic without subtitles! Saipan is a… movie? And judging by the dialogue, it involves argabargy and shooleshanga. Please, subtitles - save us!

Yumtastic Ryan Gosling must save the world from the threat of a destructive, unpredictable, fat orange gas-bag. No, we’re not referring to our bitch baby president - it’s the sun, ya’ll, and it’s gonna blow! Project Hail Mary follows our hero into the outer limits as he fiddles with gadgets, floats in zero-gravity, and fiercifies some serious sci-fi fabulosity. To quote another Gosling gem: “Yay, space!”
Forbidden Fruits sounds like a list of all your ex’s hot friends that you wanna boff, but you just can’t go there… without a few cocktails first. An update of the cult classic The Craft, three witchy mall employees get fashionable, get gothy, and get slapped! Srsly, these catty kweens are quick with the palm, so watch out!
Hot take: Ready or Not is better than Knives Out. They’re both stylish cat-and-mouse thrillers that explore the inner workings of a diabolical aristocracy, but Ready or Not has way more exploding humans. Well, step back from the splatter zone, because Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is marching down the aisle and in your face! This is the bloodiest bride since Kill Bill and we’re so here for it. New stars, new style, new ‘splosions! Save the date, screw your enemies.
Three nuns walk into a troubled boy’s life - stop us if you’ve heard the punchline! Holy Days revolves around a trio of sisters trying to help a lad come to terms with the death of his mum by trekking to a snowy New Zealand island/mountain realm where the deed to their dilapidated convent is buried. Pfft, that old story! It helps that the aforementioned nuns are played by Judy Davis, Miriam Margolies and Jacki Weaver - if you’re unfamiliar with these rockstar actors, say 40 Hail Marys and brush up on your legendary ladies, for Chist’s sake.
Speaking of blasphemy, Sofia Coppola manages to boring up the life of Marc Jacobs in her self-indulgent documentary Marc by Sofia. Our eyes just rolled back so hard that we can taste our irises.
On a brighter note, March goes out like a lion with a firehose of estrogen entitled They Will Kill You. Zazie Beetz and Heather Graham do battle against Patricia Arquette’s bonkers accent (Is it Dutch? Is it Welsh? Perhaps Wutch?) in this gurrrl power blast-and-a-half. The tracking shots evoke Oldboy, the saturated color palette and operatic score are reminiscent of Suspiria, and the whole melange is a righteous rollercoaster of comedy, action, and good ol’ fashioned ass-kickery.
Whew! That’s a lot of visceral viewing, but we’re sure you’re up for the task. After all, you’re curious, you’re creative, and you’re queer af. Happy (gay) movie’ing!

BY MICHAEL WESTMAN
n the seventies and eighties, if you wanted to be seen, you went to Palm Springs. But if you wanted to be yourself, you crossed the line into Cathedral City, affectionately dubbed “Cat City.” It was a wild, wonderful frontier – the place where the ‘Hardware’ signs meant leather, the dance floors were sweat-soaked, and the rules of the ‘respectable’ world simply didn’t apply.
IThere is a poetic justice in the fact that the same city once treated as a ‘forbidden’ playground for the marginalized eventually became the desert’s “living room.” Here’s a walk back through time to retrace some of those steps Cathedral City has taken as a city…

While neighboring Palm Springs was still maintaining a buttoned-up, “Hollywoodglam” image, the LGBTQ+ community began drifting toward Cathedral City. Back then, it was the wild frontier. Because Palm Springs made it nearly impossible for “alternative” businesses to get licenses, entrepreneurs headed down Highway 111. In 1971, Oil Can Harry’s Spa opened its doors, providing one of the first safe, private spaces for gay men to socialize and relax. It was the start of Cat City’s reputation as the “hands-off” sanctuary where you could truly be yourself.

By the 1980s, Cathedral City wasn’t just an alternative; it was the destination. It was the “Gay Capital of the Desert,” home to iconic spots like Daddy Warbucks and CC Construction Company. Then there was Rocks, a club that actually featured a builtin volcano that “erupted” during the night. Ironically, the club met a real-life fiery end when a blaze gutted it in the early 90s.
This era was all about high energy—think go-go dancers, whipped cream wrestling, and a burgeoning leather scene that found a permanent home in the city’s more industrial, gritty corners. While the rest of the world was often unwelcoming, Cat City felt like a fortress of neon lights and community spirit.
But it wasn’t all just about the nightlife. When the AIDS crisis hit, Cathedral City’s bars became fundraising hubs. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance of the Desert (GLAD) was founded with its first office in Cathedral City, coordinating the first local Pride picnics and support networks during the community’s darkest hour.
As the community matured, so did its impact on the city’s landscape. In 1992, the legendary Barracks opened. Originally opened as the “Wolf’s Den,” the Barracks became a world-renowned destination for leather-kink culture. Its Sunday Beer Busts were legendary. Greg Pettis was elected to the City Council in 1994. He was the city’s longest-serving councilmember and the city’s first openly gay public servant. Pettis paved the way for a more inclusive local government. He didn’t just hold the seat; he became a mentor for LGBTQ+ leaders across Riverside County. At the time of his passing in January 2019 at the age of 64, he was the city’s sitting Mayor. His death marked the end of an era, as he had been a constant presence in the city’s governance for a quarter-century. He is remembered for his “Rainbow Ribbon” initiatives and for ensuring that Cathedral City was one of the first in the region to score a perfect 100 on the HRC Municipal Equality Index.
In 2001, the city took a historic step by dedicating the first officially recognized LGBTQ+ Veterans Memorial in the U.S. at Desert Memorial Park. Standing tall nearly a decade before “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was repealed, it became a sacred site for queer patriots, proving that Cathedral City was a place that honored the community’s sacrifices as much as its celebrations.

The 2010s saw Cathedral City transition from a nightlife refuge to a global political pioneer. Today, the city is experiencing a “New Wave.” Cathedral City continues to score a perfect 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index and is receiving the HRC Community Leadership Award on March 7th at the LGBT+ Days celebration. Cathedral City was also officially named the Best “Emerging Hood” for 2025 from GayCities, having triumphed over Montreal, Brooklyn, and others.
While the legendary Barracks recently closed its doors after 30+ years, the spirit is being kept alive by the highly anticipated Eagle Cathedral City, opening in 2026. Along with One Eleven Bar and The Roost Lounge, these venues continue the tradition of providing inclusive spaces where locals and visitors alike can celebrate the city’s diversity.
The city’s annual LGBT+ Days (the first Pride of the California season) has become a beloved tradition, famous for its “Bed Race,” where local businesses race decorated beds down the street in a literal display of community momentum. This year marks the 10th Annual Cathedral City LGBT+ Days which continues to highlight the city’s commitment to its community.
We are lucky to live, work, and play, in this place we call home, Cathedral City.
