WHY MANY MEN AVOID THE DOCTOR

AND WHY IT MATTERS
June is Men’s Health Month. The week of June 15–21 is Men’s Health Week. It’s a time to focus on an important issue: many men do not take care of their health as often as they should.

Men are less likely than women to go to the doctor, get checkups, or talk about their health. They are also more likely to wait until something feels serious before getting care. Because of this, men often have worse health outcomes and shorter life spans. There are many reasons.
Many men grow up believing they need to be tough and handle problems on their own. They may feel that asking for help shows weakness, and the feel pressure to be the “provider” or “protector,” and put their own health last.
Others think nothing will go wrong, especially when they’re younger. They may feel fine and assume they don’t need care.
Busy schedules can also get in the way. Responsibilities at work and at home make it easy to rationalize delaying appointments. Feelings of embarrassment talking about mental or sexual health, cost, language barriers, or past bad experiences within the health care system, also come into play. Because of these reasons, some men only go to the doctor when something is very wrong. They may end up in urgent care or the emergency room instead of getting help early. But waiting does not make problems go away. It often makes them worse.
WHY PRIMARY CARE MATTERS
One of the best things a man can do — for himself and for those he loves and who depend on him — is have a regular doctor, also called a primary care clinician. This physician helps you stay healthy, not just treat you when you are sick. They can:
• Track your health over time and establish baselines.
• Catch problems early.
• Help you manage ongoing conditions.
Without regular care and screening, issues like high blood pressure, diabetes — and even worse, cancer — can go unnoticed. When these conditions are finally diagnosed, treatment can be more complicated and invasive, less productive, and more expensive.
GET SCREENED EARLY
AND REGULARLY
Screenings are simple tests that can find problems early.
• Diabetes screening can catch early signs before symptoms start.
• Colorectal cancer screening can find
or even prevent cancer,
• Prostate cancer screening can help men understand their risk. These tests can save lives — but only if men get them.
MENTAL HEALTH IS HEALTH
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Many men don’t talk about depression, anxiety, or stress. Instead, some may cope by drinking too much alcohol or using drugs. Others may shut down or pull away from friends and loved ones at home. Loneliness and isolation are also common, especially as men get older. Men are less likely to be diagnosed with depression, but more likely to die by suicide. This shows how often mental health needs go untreated.
Talking to a doctor, counselor, or someone you trust can help. You don’t need to have all the answers. Just starting the conversation is a strong first step.
DON’T SKIP YOUR ANNUAL PHYSICAL
A yearly checkup is a simple way to stay on track. During a visit, your primary care clinician can:
• Check blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight.
• Recommend tests neede.,
• Talk about diet, exercise, and sleep.
• Answer questions before they become bigger problems.
Think of it like taking care of your car by giving it tune-ups before it breaks down.
SEXUAL HEALTH MATTERS TOO
Sexual health is part of overall health. Regular testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, is important — especially if you have new or multiple partners. Testing is quick, private, and needs to be normalized.
June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. It’s an important reminder to know your status. Today, HIV can be treated with medication, and people with the virus can live long, healthy lives. When treated, they can reach an “undetectable” level, which means they can-
not pass the virus to others (“U = U” stands for “Undetectable = Untransmissible).
If you test negative, you can take PrEP, an oral or injected medication that helps prevent HIV. So, if it’s been a while since your last HIV test — or if you’ve never been tested at all — don’t wait any longer.
The same goes for other sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea, syphilis, or chlamydia. If you’re positive for any of these, treatment is simple and effective — not to mention free at any DAP Health sexual wellness clinic.
And if you’re negative, routinely using DoxyPEP (post-exposure prophylaxis that entails taking two 100mg doses of doxycycline within 72 hours of unprotected oral, vaginal, or anal sex) can ward off some STIs.

Taking care of your health does not have to be hard. Start with simple steps:
• Schedule a yearly checkup.
• Get recommended screenings.
• Talk openly about mental and sexual health.
• Build a relationship with a doctor and a pharmacist.
Taking care of your health isn’t a weakness, it’s the ultimate strength. June is Men’s Health Month, so don’t wait until something’s wrong. Make your health a priority. The sooner you act, the better your chances of staying healthy. And that’s the best news of all. For yourself, and for those who depend on you.

“Sometimes being weird is amazing!” beams Jeffery Roberson, aka Varla Jean Merman, the love child of Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine. “But sometimes, weird just doesn’t work. You have to take a risk.”
Varla’s humble beginnings were a danger du jour. “I used to film videos on the streets; that’s how I started in New Orleans. I was filming John Waters inspired little videos and we would give them to the gay bars in New Orleans, and they would play that behind dance music because this is before MTV. So I would film people’s reactions, but now people are taught to fear drag in small towns. If To Wong Foo happened now, if they went to a small town, they’d all be murdered.”
Devastatingly dark yet eternally insightful, Varla traces the state of drag from her early days to the queer-andnow. “That’s what happens when something gets so popular - people wanna tear it down. So, I would not sell my videos on the streets in Florida because people would get angry. ‘Their team’ has been taught that drag is evil and it’s just so ridiculous. Drag queens are not pedophiles; don’t get me started. It’s just flippin nuts.”
With a hilarious aside, she quips, “Even though I love the people I know here, Florida itself is just - oh my Godit’s not ideal.”
You said a gator-sized mouthful, Varla!
The convo ping-pongs playfully from era to era. “I just can’t believe that I get to do this for a living. It’s been a wild ride. I was in advertising in New York and I got into the Broadway show Chicago ‘cause I had a really high voice and I was doing a little bit of drag and then a woman from Provincetown saw me at Caroline’s Comedy Club. She said, “You should come to Provincetown. You’ll make more money

in three months than you make in your advertising job all year long.’”
But the road to queer fame is never straight. Taking our discussion on a delightful detour, Varla recounts, “I was on a show called Karaoke Showcase in 1991 hosted by Bowser from Sha Na Na. I was just starting out and it was filmed at Universal Studios in Orlando and I forgot that in the green room, I put a piece of chicken in my bra because I thought I’d pull it out and eat it during my number, OK. I’m singing Like a Virgin and the chicken fell out from between my legs while I’m on stage and then I picked it up and ate it, but it’s a family show so as soon as the chicken leg falls out from my crotch, then they just cut to me singing the last note.”
Her appetite was whetted and her loins were even wetter. It was time for
Varla Jean Merman to birth her big break: Girls Will Be Girls. “I remember reading the script where she says, ‘I’ve had more kids pulled out of me than a burning orphanage.’ This is before Family Guy so I thought ‘Oh my god, that’s too offensive.’”
Yup. Varla was oh so right about being oh so wrong. “When we went to Sundance, a lot of high-powered people walked out, but then it becomes a cult hit. Two years after the movie, people would come up to me and say ‘Oh my god I saw your movie. I was the only one in the theater.’ I was in Provincetown, like 2005, I’m walking down the street, and someone throws a handful of candy at me and says ‘Take these for the ride, ya huge cow!’ And I’m like what the fuck, help me, and then I was like wait a minute that’s from that movie.”
Sweetly successful, Varla parlayed her plucky personality into mainstream projects like Project Runway, Ugly Betty and All My Children. In addition to the campy creativity she’s been flexing for decades, Varla has pragmatic advice for other up and coming kweens. “A lot of these girls, they’re not hanging around accountants,” she explains. “You gotta financially set yourself up because it is a career. It is a career. It’s not just horsing around in your hometown making a few extra bucks. It is now a viable career, so you need to treat it like one. Girls, open a SEP IRA.”

So, what’s the logical next step for a ‘stable’ career ‘woman’ who’s got it all? “I might be a little too old to have a baby, but you’ll have to come to the show and find out.” Color us intrigued. Do go on. “I wanted to do a show about motherhood. I don’t exactly have the best relationship with my mother… She’s never asked me what I did for a living, and I’m 56 - I don’t know if that’s a southern thing. It’s southern denial.”
But nurturing flows naturally from Varla Jean. After all, she learned from the best, even if they weren’t biologically bound to her. “I’ve had so many people in my life who have been so maternal towards me and taught me things, and so this show is about motherhood, about all the people who have influenced me and raised me.”
The result? “I’m opening my new show June 13, Unlike a Virgin, after I workshop it in Palm Springs,” declares Ms. Merman. “That’s the great thing about Provincetown: I get the show really good and then I do it every night, every night. I do about 80 shows in the summer.”
The seaside hotspot is experiencing a drag renaissance, which is a far cry from its sapphic past. “When I first started in Provincetown, it was all lesbian comics because all the gay guys had literally died. So lesbians owned the town in the ‘90s. They bought the whole town up. And, you know, they sold it back to the gay guys,” Varla notes with a warm guffaw. “Now it’s like the Branson, Missouri of drag.”
To stand out from the sisterhood, Varla is bringing her odd fierceness full circle and getting maximumly weird again. Unlike a Virgin plays out like a pregnant fever dream featuring heartfelt stories, gender bending joy, and the most adorbsies scene stealer in showbiz: Varla’s pooch Jasper.
Ever the devoted dog-mom, the drag legend is lining up gigs through the end of the year to keep kibble on the table. “I’m gonna be in Palm Springs for Pride with Jurassic Drag, a whole different show. We did Jurassic Drag there a couple years ago with me, Miss Coco, Jackie Beat, and Sherry Vine, all of whom I totally adore. And I will be doing that at the Palm Springs Cultural Center.”
That brings Varla to the final ingredient in her recipe for success. In addition to financial planning, whimsical weirdness, and a heaping helping of crotch-chicken, she identifies the crown jewel in her reign of merry madness.
“You need obsessed gays. I get such a great audience, so I just thank the fans for coming to see me because it’s really given me just the best life ever. I can’t imagine how this has even been my life - to just come up with really stupid shit.”
One woman’s ‘stupid’ is another man’s sublime. Thank you, Varla Jean Merman, for swimming the seas of strangeness, and congratulations on your foray into motherhood. You’re vamping for two and camping it up for the masses.
ANNA CAMP IN HER HAPPY PLACE

Have you ever felt out of place? Wow, look who we’re asking. Of course you have - you’re gorgeously, gregariously gay! Most places can’t handle how epically amazing you are. It’s their loss, quite frankly.
But how *great* does it feel when you ultimately find your groove, merge into your lane, and discover your raison d’être? It’s almost as if you just arrived at a party where you’re the guest of honor. Your LGBTQ+ family has been waiting for you, saving you a space, and they burst into joyous wonder when you finally sashay across the threshold to claim your truth.
“MY FAMILY, OF COURSE, AT FIRST WAS A LITTLE SURPRISED, BUT THEY’VE COMPLETELY EMBRACED ME AND HER.”
Yup, that sums up the era that Anna Camp is living right now, right here in Greater Palm Springs.
“Being queer in a predominantly queer community, you have a lot going for you. It’s vibrant, creative, and it’s just a place where you can just be you.”
‘Fitting in’ isn’t exactly the first phrase that comes to mind when we think of Ms. Camp, mainly because she has spent her brilliant career standing out. Oh, she’s a scene stealer, honey - just ask her Oscar winning costars from The Help, her Bella besties from Pitch Perfect, or the thirsty squad from True Blood. Camp can play the ditzy blonde, but her smarts slice right through that facade whenever she delivers a devastating punchline. And speaking of devastating slices, the accomplished actor just scared up her biggest hit yet with Scream 7
In other words: watch out, Coachella Valley.
“Palm Springs is known as this classic old Hollywood escape for movie stars like Frank Sinatra, and it has so much rich history and just this classic California vibe, which I absolutely love. Yet there is also that modern, cool aesthetic out here in the desert.”
The laid-back life definitely agrees with Camp. She has established herself as a comic force, a femme most fatale, and a go-to for filmmakers and creators of all genres. It took years of work, but now the world is starting to spin Camp’s way. Instead of chasing roles, she can let them chase her. Pro-tip: you’ll find her soaking up the serenity of the Coachella Valley.
“The whole Los Angeles culture? I am so completely over it, to be totally honest. And that rat race and how you’re always competing for the next thing - I just never feel settled when I’m there.”
Settled. Let’s savor that word. It sometimes feels so unattainable for us queer folk. We’re born into a straight realm, we’re always chasing either acceptance or redemption (or both), and we’re pushed to the margins every election cycle. Even when it feels like society makes progress in the form of, say, marriage equality, the rug beneath us has convenient handles for others to pull it out from under us at their whim.
But it’s possible to settle down

without settling for less; just take it from Anna Camp. This year, she announced her relationship with stylist and writer Jade Whipkey. Even though the revelation was news to most of the media, those with eagle eyes saw the Jade/Anna romance rippling through social media since early 2025.
“It’s been almost a year and a half now, which is crazy to think about,” exclaims Camp. “Time has flown by. At first, I was definitely a bit nervous to
share that part of myself with the world in some regard, but the majority of me felt like this should be normalized. I don’t really need to come out. I don’t want to have a coming out article. It should be normal that people can date people, whoever they want. So, I never had any true hesitation in announcing that part of my life.”
Camp has always owned her space. In every scene she performs, you’ll find a glint in her eye that conveys several mes-
sages simultaneously: she’s in on the joke, the joke just got better because of Camp’s killer delivery, and the joke’s on you if you underestimate her. But controlling the narrative is easy(ish) when it comes to scripted entertainment.
Coming out to your fam is another story altogether. Were they gonna jumpscare for joy or be all ‘Aca-scuse me?’
Let’s hear how it played out from Camp directly…
“My family, of course, at first was a
little surprised, but they’ve completely embraced me and her. Just the amount of support that I’ve gotten from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. And anybody that doesn’t respect where I’m at, those friendships will naturally fall away because this is the true me. At least I know now that, if they don’t support me well, I’m glad I’m not wasting any more time being friends with them.”
Savagely honest. Honestly savage. But
Camp only has hate for the haters. To the rest of us, she is sunshine and puppies… literally. Her passion for philanthropy helps her to think global, act local, and love on a whole bunch of beautiful pooches. Last Christmas, she judged a drag contest for dogs. We’re gonna repeat that for emphasis. It was a drag contest for dogs! Boozehounds in Palm Springs hosted the grrrla - oops, we mean gala, and some of the furtastic categories (dogegories?) included Butch Boy Sleigh and Tail-Wagging Tinsel Queen.
Ruff competition, indeed.
“At the Bow Wow Ball, I connected with the Palm Springs Animal Shelter,” recounts a canine-crazy Camp. “Literally that weekend, I went and I took a tour and I met so many amazing people and I got to meet so many dogs. Like, I’m an animal lover through and through. I have two dogs of my own. And I just want to do what I can, so I posted a bunch of them on my Instagram and I think some of them got adopted from that. So that was exciting. I want to continue to work with them. It’s such a wonderful facility and just the fact that nobody’s getting paid - it’s all volunteer work - is just so inspiring to me. Hopefully, I will be putting more adoptable dogs on my Instagram soon.”
Sure, she may be cuddly IRL, but Camp is a real cut-up on screen. In addition to True Blood and Scream 7, her portfolio is a blood-splattered, gorily gorgeous, good time! Camp has tackled the terrifying topic of addiction in From Black, a film she also executive produced. The stream queen also starred in the Satanic-panic Peacock series Hysteria! Scared yet? Well, good news / bad news time: even if you cover your eyes, you’re not safe from her throng of thrills. Camp adds her voice talent to the freaky-fun podcast Murder at the Patel Motel.
We’re seeing a macabre pattern here… and we love it.
“I have always been drawn to horror. I think that it’s something that as an actress, because the circumstances are so incredibly heightened, and the stakes are so high, it presents these extreme scenarios that you don’t necessarily get with other genres. I like pushing myself and challenging myself, and I think that
because the circumstances are so extraordinary, you really get the opportunity to do so. So, I think that’s why I keep coming back to horror. It’s just so fun and so exciting to see what I’m capable of as an actor.”
Since coming out, Camp has galvanized her gift for finding depth in depravity. Exhibit A: the way she slayed her role as Jessica Bowden in the latest Scream film. “It was not necessarily written that she was queer or in love with Sidney Prescott, but I definitely built that into the character because it gave me an obsession, right? It gave me this sort of undying love for this other woman.”
Love is love - and love hurts! It can turn even the gentlest soul into a soul-harvesting slasher star. Camp enjoys navigating the terrain between sweetheart and stabber, mom-sweet and murderer. Equal parts spicy, sassy and sophisticated, Camp’s robust range is on full display in the Netflix series You. She portrays treacherous twins conniving their way through the upper echelons of the socialite set, and the actor relishes the challenge with a sense of double delight.
“That was literally the most exciting thing that I’ve ever gotten to do. It was definitely a lot of work. I remember the days that I had to play both of them on the same day and I just remember like, ‘I have to go through hair and makeup twice more than everybody just to get through, learn twice as many lines,’ right? But those are good problems to have. I was incredibly excited that they trusted me with both of those roles and I was proud of myself on top of it all. I thought I did a pretty good job.”
Um, obvi!
Shifting into creative overdrive, Camp is eager to unveil her next project to fans this fall. HGTV’s A Very Haunted Renovation pits six designers against each other in a poltergeist-y makeover reality show, hosted by the one and only Anna Camp.
“I love when my art can affect someone in a positive way. Even if I’m playing the villain and they just love to hate me so much, whatever it is. I just want to make people feel something deeply.” The convo organically pivots back to Pitch Perfect as Camp teases the possibility
of more Bella realness to come. “I’m so grateful for that trilogy and I’m actually hopeful, and I think we all are, we’re hopeful for a 4th someday. Someday. If only I had more concrete things to tell you, but I literally get asked it all the time and I know that we would all do it if Universal Pictures came to us, so fingers crossed.”
Damn, we’re crossing our fingers so hard they’re liable to break! Maybe we need to zen out with Anna. Despite all of the A-list productions on the proverbial horizon, she prefers to gaze at the calming vistas of Palm Springs and its surrounding landscape.
“There’s just something so magical, whether you’re looking at the mountains, the palm trees - the sunsets are like no other here. I love going to Joshua Tree. I just love the relaxed nature and the quintessential freedom to be authentically yourself. And I think that that’s something that the desert really provides.” Pausing reflectively, Camp continues espousing the virtues of our progressive paradise. “There’s no other place like it. It’s just so beautiful and magical and so many creatives are drawn to come out here that you meet so many wonderful,
open people. These are people who are not looking to go anywhere else. They want to be here, right? They’re here because they want to be. It is really lovely.”
Camp is building a legacy of laughter and thrills on a foundation of warmth. The desert perfectly complements her dry wit and cloudless disposition. Palm Springs is proud to include Camp in its long list of luminaries; her humor will mingle with Lucille Ball’s in the arid ether and her timeless style waltzes alongside the likes of Garbo, Liz Taylor and Marilyn. Icons, to be sure, but Ms. Camp fits right in.
“Here I feel the most relaxed, the most Anna, the most joyful, the most creatively inspired, and the happiest. And that’s why I’m so happy to call the Coachella Valley my home.”
Belonging is a powerful force. When you find your cosmic tribe, you can conquer the universe. Anna Camp is off to a great start, triumphing in each title she graces across every medium imaginable. From her humble headquarters in our sun-dappled queer Mecca to the outer limits of acting, producing and creating, her trajectory is transcendent. We’re beyond elated to be along for the ride.

What’s your idea of paradise? Maybe it’s a secluded beach or a cozy mountaintop cabin.
Perhaps you have a staff of dozens or just that one special someone. Caviar? Champagne? Cheese fries? Perfection is in the eye of the beholder.
But here in Palm Springs, we spell paradise D-I-C-K-S.
“I just think it’s the best place to be!” declares Mark Callaghan, the new owner of Dick’s on Arenas. It’s an elevated dive bar, a whimsical watering hole, and a surefire place to meet hunky, hairy, happy (i.e. gay) dudes and dudettes any day of the week.
Previously known as Score Bar and then Eagle 501, the space boasts a frothy history of laid back realness, strong beverages, and an even stronger sense of community. “Back in 2009,” recounts Callaghan, “friends of mine said, ‘let’s go to Arenas’ and I said, ‘okay, let’s go.’ And I remember Score was the first place that I walked into. And I thought, what a cool vibe. And then over the years, I’ve been going to Hunters and Streetbar and Chill and Quadz and Blackbook. I mean, it’s just a great vibe and I think the whole street’s going to get better because again, we all want to work together. I mean, Jen who owns Hunters - we had something that we needed the other day, and we texted her and she said, ‘come and get it.’ I mean, we want to help each other out. We’re anticipating a big Memorial Day weekend and if she runs out of ice, we’ll give her ice and vice versa.”
Callaghan doesn’t just talk the talk; he actually rocks! “I just got out of a meeting, as a matter of fact, with other Arenas Road bar owners, and we all want the same thing for our block: to be the best gay block anywhere. And we all want to work together to achieve that.”
The bar was already bonkers fun, but even champs can change for the better. “We did a focus group back when we got in escrow for the place, to find out what people thought of Dick’s, what people thought of the Dick’s name, what they didn’t like about Dick’s. We spent a lot of time making sure that when we took over, we were going to get it right. And some of the things that came up, there

were a lot of people that talked about how it was hot in there in the summer and they could never get cool. Last summer, for a month or two, they had one air conditioning unit out and the other one was limping along and at times it was 100 degrees inside the bar. And that’s never going to happen again. We’ve got it set at a cool temperature and we have four units and we just added six tons of additional air conditioning to make sure we don’t have any problems this summer.”
Way cool! And speaking of cool, Callaghan gives a well-deserved and wonderfully eager shout-out to the Dick’s squad.
“I’m super proud of the team. We did a lot of due diligence and we even spent a lot of time inside Dick’s before we closed on it, before they knew who we were, because we wanted to really know about it. And one thing that my partners and I came up with, and we all agreed on is the staff, they are the best. And every single person that was there under the prior ownership was offered their same position or a better position.”
Good news: Callaghan’s words aren’t just empty, rah-rah company speak - the crew shares his sentiment of solidarity. In a candid chat with the General Manager
of Dick’s, Jeffrey Wylie, he describes having “goosebumps” during the first allstaff meeting because of the camaraderie coursing through the space.

“We’re still hiring, because we’re growing,” announces Callaghan. “A lot of people say we’re at the end of the season and things are going to slow down. They are going to slow down, but I want to minimize the slowing, and I think we can do it because we are having record days and record nights now. I hear from our
staff a lot that they’re seeing new faces. And I mean, some of the bartenders have been with us for 10 plus years, and they’re seeing a lot of new faces and different faces and a lot of smiling faces. So that makes me super, super happy.”
And you can’t spell happiness without… Well, we’ll leave the innuendo to Mark Callaghan. “Come and see and feel Dick’s. Cooler Dick’s. Cleaner Dick’s.”
Putting the next-level naughtiness aside, our convo ends on a heartfelt note. As we discuss Pride in the age of division, safe spaces under attack across our embattled nation, and
general unease in our current cultural climate, Callaghan pours us a heaping helping of hope.
“We hear it a lot and I totally believe that at the end of the day, love wins. It does win. Every time, and sometimes, we may think that it’s not the answer. It is the answer. And the Dick’s team, we show it every day and every night and they all feel the exact same way. I know our team and love wins.”

HOLLYWOOD BOWL – Hollywood: Every June I start to think outside the box – more specifically, outside the box theatre. The world-famous Hollywood Bowl begins its summer season and my head starts spinning as I try to narrow my choices down to two or three.
There are special programs of jazz, salsa, mariachi and reggae. There are incredible evenings of light classics played by the Los Angeles Philharmonic (The Bowl is their summer home), featuring world-renown soloists. Since Gustav Dudamel is finishing his 17-year stint as artistic director of the LA Phil this year, he will conduct four different concerts celebrating his favorite music.
Individual artists include Rod Stewart, Richard Marx, Paul Simon, Chance the Rapper, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight, Tower of Power, ZZ Top, Counting Crows, John Mellencamp, Santana & The Doobie Brothers, Al Green, The Black Crowes, David Byrne, One Republic, Andrea Bocelli, and many others.
High recommendations go to any program that includes fireworks. Seeing thousands of pyrotechnics in synch with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra is sensational. Those include July 2, 3 and 4 when the orchestra is joined by The Beach Boys with John Stamos; The Tchaikovsky Spectacular with Fireworks; and The Fireworks Finale with One Republic.
Other evenings feature movies accompanied by live orchestrations; an evening of music from ’69; The Los Angeles Ballet, and several concerts focused on the music of different film composers.
And just visiting the 18,000-seat landmark is a thrill. Warning: The logistics of getting in and out are a challenge, though they have done an amazing job of speeding up the process as much as possible. If you pre-reserve and park at the venue, you will be stuck parked so you might have to wait a while for the cars ahead of you to leave. Otherwise, there are numerous park-n-ride options with some near and some in more distant neighborhoods. MAMA MIA – Various: The musical Mama Mia opened in London in 1999 and since then, it has been viewed by more than 70 million viewers and has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide. There have been many cross-country tours since its 2000 premiere on Broadway, playing theatres in cities large and small.
Typically, following a Broadway opening, a successful show will do a National Tour, featuring pretty much the full Broadway sets, costumes, and number of people in the cast. After that tour, various bus-and-truck productions will begin where all the stage elements – sets, costumes, sound and lighting – must fit on four trucks while the non-union cast rides from town to town on a single bus. If you haven’t seen the original production, chances are you will be satisfied with the cut-down version.
Now here’s an anomaly: Mama Mia was revived on Broadway in 2025, so the current tour is actually the National Tour of the revival. It will play the Hollywood Pantages June 23 –July 19 but then goes to other large cities across the country and won’t return to smaller theatres in California until June 2027 when it will play Palm Desert, San Jose, and San Diego. Costa Mesa and San Francisco are conspicuously missing from the itinerary, but it’s likely they will be added as theatres and tours finalize their 2027 schedules.
The jukebox musical features songs made popular by the Swedish group Abba. They include “Super Trouper”, “Lay All Your Love on Me”, “Dancing Queen”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “Thank You for the Music”, “Money, Money, Money”, “The Winner Takes It All”, “Voulez-Vous”, “SOS” and “Mamma Mia”. And of course, it also spawned two movie versions starring Meryl Streep and many other A-listers.
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA – Various: The longest running show in Broadway history, Phantom of the Opera, opened in 1988 and closed in 2023. Eight performances a week means just over 400 performances per year. Running for 35 years, The Phantom’s curtain raised almost 14,000 times in the same Broadway theatre.
As mentioned above in Mama Mia, the Broadway production will likely have a lot more scenery, costumes, and a larger cast than a touring production. The original staging featured numerous trapdoors cut into the stage with pieces of scenery that emerged from the floor, and a large trap door that would allow a person to jump from a high piece of scenery and land on an air bag beneath the stage. Tours obviously can’t cut holes in the floor of every theatre they visit, so adjustments are made to the stage.
The story is set in the Paris Opera House when two new owners have just purchased it. The former owner knew it was haunted but didn’t explain that to the buyers. We eventually learn that a man/spirit lives in the deep caverns beneath the theatre and he occasionally leaves notes making demands regarding the performers and the operas he will allow to be staged in “his” opera house.
He observes a young soprano, Christine Dyer, and he wants to see her playing a leading role. He causes the lead soprano, Carlotta, to lose her voice so Chrstine can replace her.
It’s not much of a spoiler to mention that the Phantom becomes so angry that he causes the opera house’s grand chandelier to crash to the ground just before intermission. I suspect that there are some theatres where the chandelier can’t be hung over the audience, but even touring productions which I have seen have the huge light fixture falling directly toward the audience just before the blackout. Pretty scary stuff.
I can’t remember a Phantom tour in the last 15+ years, so this visit will be welcome. It plays The San Francisco Orpheum 5/28 – 6/21; Hollywood Pantages 6/24 – 8/9; Costa Mesa Segerstrom Center 8/12 – 30; San Diego Civic 9/2 – 13; and San Jose Center for the Performing Arts 9/7 – 18.
Measure for Measure – San Diego: Besides the Hollywood Bowl, my other favorite sign of summer is Shakespeare under the stars at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre. This summer brings two of The Bard’s greatest comedies: Measure for Measure (6/14 – 7/12) and Much Ado About Nothing (8/2 – 30).
Note that “comedy” in Shakespearean parlance doesn’t mean “laugh a minute” as in a Neil Simon comedy. It’s simply lightweight plot and the hero lives at the end. Measure for Measure, written over 400 years ago, still has relevance as it explores themes of hypocrisy, sexual politics and the balance between strict law enforcement and compassionate justice –in short, themes which have much relevance today!
Vincentio, the Duke of Vienna, must leave the city on a diplomatic mission. He instates a strict judge, Angelo, to act as his deputy until he returns. Angelo persecutes a young man for the crime of fornication and sentences him to death. He then tries to seduce the young man’s sister, a chaste and innocent nun, when she comes to plead for her brother’s life. Could be ripped from today’s headlines.
The two biggest fears about attending a Shakespear play are one - I won’t understand the language; and two - it will be too long. Both problems are addressed at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre. Instead of five acts as originally written, they are trimmed and combined into two acts and rarely last more than two hours. The language remains as Shakespeare wrote it, but it is delivered by such skilled actors that we barely recognize it as Elizabethan English.
The Old Globe’s Lowell Davies Festival Theatre is intimate, and the sound and lighting are subtle enough that it’s hard to recognize that technical stagecraft is involved, making it feel much more authentic.
Arrive at Balboa Park early enough to find parking. It’s never easy, and the city has added parking charges this year, but a stroll through the park before the show is delightful. Food and wine are available at the theatre. www.TheOldGlobe.org.

Wrong! There are no major studio releases centering on LGBTQ+ characters this month. What a kick in the khakis! But fear not and queer naughtily because we’re about to find every scrap of cinematic sass and magnify it through our rainbow lens. We’ll show you gay!
JUNE 5TH
The line between comedy and horror is bloody ticklish. The absurdity of the hot-dogmunching same sex couple in Weapons, the garish gore of The Terrifier, and that ridiculous M3GAN dance routine are a real scream. That’s why they need to be skewered, Scary Movie style. Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and approximately 4,000 Wayans siblings are back to lampoon everything from Sinners to Final Destination in this poopoopalooza of scatalogical satire. You may call it juvenile, you may call it gross, just don’t call us late for opening weekend!
Stop trying to make Jared Leto happen! He’s already ruined The Joker, Tron, Hello Kitty and whatever the hell other franchises he’s scheduled to muck up - why must he also play Skeletor? Perhaps Leto is the ham to offset the cheese that is Masters of the Universe. At first glance, the cast looks promising. Idris Elba? He’d be the perfect He-Man! Alas, swell-ba Elba is just a supporting player. To paraphrase the hero, “I have the power… to avoid this movie.”
Instead, see one of these offbeat offerings that round out the weekend’s releases. Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas get bromantic in the musical-esque dramedy Power Ballad. Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner get scantily clad and scandalously criminal in Carolina Caroline. And The Birthday Party transports viewers to an intriguing island, a f***ed up family, and a wonderland of misguided fashion choices. Or maybe it’s just set in the 1970s? Gotta watch to find out!

Attention, straight people! We gays have walked among you for centuries. We look like you (except better) and we act like you (except saner), but we have a secret language to help us identify one another. Let’s have a kiki! Now replace ‘gays’ with ‘extraterrestrials’ and you have the plot of Disclosure Day, basically. Spielberg directs, aliens unite, and Colman Domingo dazzles. We’re way excited for a cosmic coming-out; it’ll be outta this world!
Back here on earth, RuPaul plays the mothertucking president in Stop! That! Train! What? Stranger things could happen. For example, our president could be a corrupt, dementia-drenched bigot who wages wars to distract from his sexual devia– Wait. Too real. Let’s get back to Stop! That! Train! The cast is a who’s-who of hoo-gurl! Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Charo, and a roster of Ru royalty hop aboard a loco locomotive of drag hilarity and disaster movie realness. Next stop: legacy!
Finally, O Horizon proves that intergenerational trauma doesn’t end at death. Oh hunny, you’re preaching to the queer choir! Abby’s father is reincarnated as a spam caller who harasses her romantic partners in a feature length film that, quite frankly, could have been an email. A junk email. A junk email philled with phishing scams. O, maybe wait for O Horizon on o’streaming.
JUNE 19TH
If anyone can save us from the cultural saturation of AI, it’s a digital animation mega blockbuster. Toy Story 5 tells the tale of trad toys teaming up against tech, most notably a tablet named Lilypad. Hmm, you can’t spell ‘Lilypad’ without ‘iPad’ - so this is a thinly veiled Apple vs. Disney catfight, right? Well, we sure hope they both make billions while the rest of us endure a dystopian IRL endgame of biblical proportions. But the toiz are soooo kewt!
In the toughest of times, we have myths to lift our spirits. For example, the medieval era brought us Robin Hood, a hero who attacked the rich and helped the poor. He was like a proto Luigi Mangione without all the pesky murder. But now, even myths can’t cheer us up. The Death of Robin Hood retells the popular morality play, but now everything is awful and heroism doesn’t exist. Really? We’re officially bleaker than the freakin’ Dark Ages? Screw you, treacherous timeline!
Finally, a lesbian coming of age drama starring… Zach Braff? Sigh, guess we’ll take what we can get. Girls Like Girls captures the betrayal of losing the one person you’ve ever loved to the scourge of heterosexuality. Never forget…
JUNE 26TH
DOUBLE finally, an unabashedly gay film packed with queer characters - Jackass: Best and Last is an orgy of man love, squashed scrotums, and robot prostate exams. That’s right, the docu-prank-stuntstravaganza features a scene in which a cyborg sticks its girthy appendage up SteveO’s consenting fun-hole to check his rectal health. So, the film is literally more helpful than our entire government rn. Admittedly toxic yet adamantly inclusive, the Jackass franchise has taken wounded masculinity out of the closet and into the limelight. These guys might be twisted, but they’re twisted together. If that’s not a perfect Pride allegory, we don’t know what is.
On the other end of the spectrum, Supergirl attempts to bring female empowerment to the masses, but there are automatically three strikes against it. One: um, why isn’t she called SuperWOMAN? Two: um, why isn’t Jason Momoa chronically shirtless? He’s out here in the trailer looking like a constipated John Travolta from Battlefield Earth. Three: and this is a biggie - the entire plot revolves around placing a cute-ass dog in peril. The bad guys shoot Krypto with some sort of poison and our shero has three days to find the antidote. Leave our precious pups alone! But if there’s one thing DC Studios understands, it’s dead dogs. This stinker will join Shazam and The Flash on the pile of meh that passes for entertainment these days.
