Kindergarten Readiness Begins at Storytime Getting your child ready for kindergarten involves more than just purchasing school supplies. One of the best ways to prepare young children for school is through library storytimes. Reading and talking together help children develop essential kindergarten readiness skills, including social-emotional growth, language development, early literacy, behavioral skills, and physical coordination. Storytime activities are designed by trained staff to strengthen these important abilities in fun and engaging ways. Through stories, songs, and conversations, children learn to show curiosity, work together with others, and express their thoughts, feelings, and needs clearly. Those who attend storytime also practice listening and responding to questions and directions. They often build trusting relationships with library staff, which can help them feel more comfortable and confident in forming similar connections with their future teachers. Storytime is also important for parents. When families take part in these activities together, children see that learning is valued and supported at home. Research consistently shows that early parental involvement in education has a lasting positive effect on a child’s success in school. Most importantly, storytime helps children discover the joy of learning. A positive outlook and excitement about exploring new ideas are some of the strongest foundations for kindergarten readiness and lifelong learning. Be sure to join us at your local branch storytimes this fall.
The School Supply That Lasts All Year As families prepare for the new school year, backpacks, notebooks, and pencils are at the top of every shopping list. This year, add one more essential item: a Geauga County Public Library card! A Geauga County Public Library card opens the door to endless opportunities, connecting students with a wide assortment of resources that support learning and academic success all year long. Students can explore more than 80 digital resources, including CultureGrams and Explora, take advantage of quiet study spaces, borrow specialized literacy and STEAM learning kits, and, of course, discover thousands of books, magazines, and other materials in our print collection. Whether attending our Chardon Branch's Weather Science or our Geauga West Branch's Movin' with Music, participants discover that learning is not only educational but also fun, engaging, and a unique way to connect with friends, family, and the community.
