It’s been a long, long road for the Ohio Department of Transportation to complete its new complex in Middlefield Village and the journey is not over quite yet. But, after nearly six years of planning and building, the new Geauga County ODOT headquarters should be ready for occupation in the next few months. Road Superintendent Joe Tucholsky told Middlefield Village Council Sept. 14 the enormous facility will be functional by the time the snow flies — this year. “They need to be here before winter,” he said. Now that all the construction is complete, the current garage on 5 acres in Burton Village will be relocating once the paperwork is done, he added. Construction started in the spring of 2021 and a passerby on Tare Creek Parkway might have wondered for the last year or more why the acres of concrete and buildings were empty. “The original holdup of construction was because the salt shed took so long. They wouldn’t move in until they could use (the facility) 100%,” Tucholsky said. The shed is 68 feet tall and is built to hold at least 17,000 tons of road salt, he said. “The one in Southern Ohio is built the same way and they can put 20,000 tons in it,” he said. Besides the equipment and trucks coming in from Burton, he said the trucks and employees from the Parkman Township yard will be moving in, as well. Because salt from the yard was contaminating residential wells in the township, ODOT moved the salt dome on state Route 168 to the yard on Bass Lake Road north of Mayfield Road and has offered the 2-acre parcel to Parkman Township. There are not many people around Northeast Ohio who don’t think we’ve had enough big winds come through our area the last couple of months. With clear skies and a soft breeze in the air Sept. 15, the Brooklyn Hurricanes blew into Richard A. Moss Stadium to do battle with the Cardinal Huskies. But the Huskies unleashed a hurricane in black uniforms immediately, and before anybody could grasp what was happening, Cardinal went on to a comfortable 35-0 Chagrin Valley Conference win. Troy Domen got things going with a 54-yard return off the opening kickoff. As he sped down the left sideline, only an ankle tackle from Kevin Nguyen stopped the run. Two plays later, Kyle Sinclair scored from the 2 yard line, and Landon Gallagher drilled the extra point kick through the uprights. A pooched kickoff set up Brooklyn (1-4) on its own 32. Max

Max Soltis and the Cardinal Huskies’ defense has shut out two of its last three opponents, including the team’s 35-0 home win against Brooklyn Sept. 15. Cardinal travels to Berkshire this week for a chance to ruin the Badgers’ Homecoming and reclaim the Kinsman Cup.
Soltis began his own efforts to create a storm on the first two plays by breaking through the line to tackle runners in their tracks. Soltis had the tackles on four of the Hurricanes’ first five plays, and they had nobody to stop him. Another punt set up the Hus-
kies (3-2) on their own 42. Logan Strever dropped back and fired deep down the right sideline, and Aidan Gallagher, who had beaten the cornerback by five yards, snared the pass and went the distance for another score. See Football • Page 6

Cardinal sophomore Blake Strever has helped the Huskies golf team start the season 10-0.
The Cardinal boys golf team is off to a great start, staying focused on the process while progressing through the season. Cardinal brought its positive mindset to the course Sept. 4 when facing the Kirtland Hornets. In the match at St. Denis Golf Course in Chardon, the Huskies defeated the Hornets, 190-202. After the round, Cardinal Head Coach Mike Topalian discussed his team’s performance. “It was a tough day, extremely hot. The rough around here is very long, so my guys struggled with that,” he said. “It wasn’t our best day, but they hung together and pulled out another road win, so I’m proud of them.” Coach Topalian said his golfers really had to focus on one shot at See Golf • Page 3
