2 Adults Injured in Cardinal Bus Accident Staff Report No students were injured during a collision between a Cardinal Schools bus and two pickup trucks at about 7:41 a.m. March 1 on state Route 87 in Middlefield Township east of state Route 528. A preliminary investigation showed the bus was stopped in the eastbound lane to collect students when the incident occurred, Chardon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said in a press release. “A Nissan pickup truck was stopped behind the school bus when it was struck in the rear by an Isuzu flatbed truck. Rotary Club Hosts 4-Way Speech Contest By Bob Johnson Rotary Club of Burton-Middlefield
The Rotary Club of Burton-Middlefield (BMR) held its annual 4-Way Test speech contest for Berkshire and Cardinal high school students on Feb. 24. The contest featured Berkshire juniors India Martin and Noah Valentino and sophomore Holly Phillips competing for the scholarship prize money. The speeches covered several meaningful topics including “teen suicide prevention,” “dehumanizing of the homeless population” and “proposing the U.S. adopt the metric system.” The students invited 14 guests including parents, school administrators, teachers,
siblings and friends. This year’s winner of the $500 first prize was India Martin; Holly Phillips placed a close second, winning $300; and Noah Valentino was third, winning $200. India Martin will go on to speak in the Rotary District 6630 event, featuring winners from all clubs that held the contest. It will be held at Springfield High School in Akron. The winners at the district level receive substantial prizes that help with their future schooling. The event is just one of the many youth opportunities provided by BMR.
