Success Stories of Happy Clients: @fourleggedscholarsllc993

Four Legged Scholars: Experts in the Human Side of Dog Training Staff Report For Johanna Teresi, dog training has never been just about the dog. Teresi, a certified professional dog trainer and owner of Four Legged Scholars LLC Dog Training, has built her Geauga County-based business on the idea that lasting change starts at the human end of the leash. This includes teaching owner’s how their energy, emotions, and thoughts affect their dog’s behavior. “I teach dog owners how to change their energy so that their dogs will listen to them,” Teresi said. “The owners learn how to communicate in a clear, direct and loving manner. This strengthens the bond between the owner and the dog, while they reach their training goals.” Teresi holds the CPDT-KA credential from the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and received a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a strong focus on animal learning. This allows her to use positive and science-based training methods. She is certified in TAGteach Level 1 and as a coach in Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). This allows her to specialize in human psychology. Both certifications help owners understand the training steps and rewire their thoughts and emotions to better align with their goals. Her love of dogs took root, early. At age 8, she received her first puppy from a neighbor’s litter in Garrettsville and she loved trick training. Later, she joined dog 4-H in Portage County and competed in obedience shows in Ohio. The business runs small, personalized group courses, including a new five-week Elementary Group Obedience Course offered through the Chardon Recreation Center inside the Chalet at Chardon Living Memorial Park. This course is open to dogs eight weeks and older that are up to date on their age-appropriate vaccinations. The class covers sit, down, stay, come, wait at the door, leave it, walking nicely on a leash, “target,” which is used to move a dog without grabbing its collar, “settle,” which stops jumping, and more. Enrollment is capped at four or five dogs to keep instruction personalized. Graduates can progress to intermediate and advanced level courses held at Middlefield village parks. These include the Outdoor Junior Outdoor Leash Walking Course, the Senior Outdoor Come Course and soon to come, an Outdoor Hiking Course. Eventually, she wants to add Trick and Dog Meditation Courses. Today, Four Legged Scholars offers private in-home dog training throughout Geauga, Portage, Ashtabula, Trumbull and Lake counties. Teresi will travel up to 30 minutes from Middlefield to clients’ homes or to local outdoor parks. She also offers private live online sessions through Zoom. Private programs range from basic and advanced obedience to behavioral issues including: reactivity, aggression, fear, separation anxiety, guarding / possessiveness and more. Each program is customized to fit the owner’s lifestyle and concerns. Page 2

Angie K. Millgate

During the initial session, she evaluates the situation and then recommends the best program option. She aims to meet weekly for one hour until the program is complete. Teresi will work with the entire family including children. Each time she meets she gives clear steps and homework assignments so that the owners knows exactly what to do. Any obstacles that are preventing success are held with love and compassion. NLP process, TAGteach, and grounding techniques are used to help move through obstacles with grace and ease. She understands that training is a process that requires commitment. She teaches the families to find enjoyment and peace in the training journey. She is a devotee of clicker training, which uses a small handheld device to mark the exact moment a dog performs a desired behavior. When the dog hears the click, he/she knows the precise behavior that earned the reward — and what to do again. As behavior improves, the clicker is phased out and rewards taper off. Do-it-yourself training is also offered on her website including a leash walking webinar and an online puppy class. More to come in time. She also works to move owners from stress to curiosity and wonder, shifting the focus from a dog’s problem behaviors to new possibilities through questions such as, “What good behavior can I reward more often?” and “What is a good motivator that may work with my dog?” On the company’s website, owners from Kent to Chardon describe over-energetic puppies and tough behavioral issues transformed in a matter of weeks, and they credit Teresi’s understanding of both dog and human behavior. “With each aspect of the training, Johanna explained and demonstrated the steps to success, not only what works, but also why it works. This was a very positive and fun experience that I would highly recommend.” – Gary Teresi has openings in her next Elementary Group Obedience Course in Chardon which is on Tuesday nights from 5-6 p.m. See Training • Page 3

Courses are ongoing and run for five weeks. $250 for the entire 5-week course (includes a clicker and treat pouch) with only four to five dogs per class. Teresi will lead a free leash walking workshop, “Positive Dog Training in the Real World,” from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at Swine Creek, with registration through the Geauga Park District. The Cellars Key Winery (8085 Madison Rd, Thompson) will be hosting a one hour “Taste and Train” with Teresi. This workshop will allow owners to relax with a glass of wine and train their dogs to settle. The workshop is geared to helping dogs that are more hyper to settle and calm. Friday Sept 25 from 6-7 p.m. $35 per dog. “Let’s help empower you to train your dog the positive way so that you can feel more at peace now,” Teresi said. To learn more or to register, contact Johanna Teresi with Four Legged Scholars LLC at 440-548-7312, info@Ohio4LeggedScholars.com or visit Ohio4LeggedScholars.com.

Hambden Mourns the loss of Trustee Paul Molan

It was with deep sadness we learned of the unexpected passing of our own Paul Molan on May 3, 2023. Paul was an outstanding trustee, citizen and friend and will be deeply missed. Paul loved serving in his role as Township Trustee and truly loved representing the residents of Hambden Township. I was truly moved by the Memory card from Paul’s calling hours at The Behm Family Funeral Home and reprinted it as follows:
