Patriotic Yard Contest has a Winner! Submitted West Geauga Kiwanis wasn’t able to have its parade this year, so instead it held a contest where families’ lawns were judged based on their patriotism. The turnout was great and the first Most Patriotic Yard Contest sported some hard choices. Joel Cohen and his son Robert took first prize, and Joel is no stranger to winning awards. He has won trophies for his floats in the Kiwanis Independence Day Parade as well.
Joel’s large yard on Caves Road had wonderful patriotic symbolism and it was evident that a lot of hours and creativity went into his patriotic yard masterpiece. He received a trophy and a gift certificate for his family to the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast next spring. Second place went to Audry Edmunds for her beautiful display on Cedar Road. She also will receive a Kiwanis gift certificate. Thank you to all who participated!

Mr. Baker Mayfield, I’m a 100-year-old veteran who served in the U.S. Navy for nine years — World War II and the Korean War. I understand you intend on kneeling during the playing of our national anthem. You have a right to do so, but before you disrespect our anthem and flag, I would like you to take a trip to Washington, D.C., and visit a number of our war memorials. Take a minute or two to recall a little history. World War II veterans, who died saving the world from a very evil man named Hitler, would only kneel in prayer for their fellow fallen soldiers and prayer of thanks being spared the ultimate price fighting to restore ours and the world’s freedom. Then visit the Iwo Jima memorial in Arlington. How can you show disrespect for those men and our flag by putting a knee down for political reasons? Visit the Korean War Memorial. Think for a moment about all those veterans who were killed defending our country and the freedom we enjoy as a nation. Our flag was flying there as it flies every day in our country. I am certain no knees went down to show disrespect for our flag abd what is has always represented. Visit the Vietnam Memorial. Think a bit about the fighting in jungles, the Agent Orange victims and how our veterans were betrayed. It was not pretty, but I am sure no
knees went down for political reasons and our flag was still flying. Finish your visit at Arlington National Cemetery. Kneel and tell those dead veterans why you choose to disrespect our flag for cheap political reasons. Mr. Mayfield, instead of following the herd, why can’t you be a leader and create a meaningful way to protest racism without desecrating our veterans who fought and died for the freedoms we all enjoy? Tony Roman Chester Township
Good Samaritan I would just like to thank the Good Samaritan who risked her life to rescue me from a fall on Mulberry Road. She was driving a beautiful red convertible Mustang, heading west near the Chester Township border. I believe her name is Mary Beth. She could have easily run me over, but she swerved to avoid me and for that I’m very grateful. I truly thought it was the end for me. And . . . she stopped immediately on our dangerous hill to come help me up off the road! Thank you so much, Mary Beth, you are one of God’s angels on earth with whom I’ve been so blessed. From the Police Chief Dear Chester Residents, As promised in the May 27, 2020, edition of the Chesterland News, I am providing the 2020 departmental incident and arrest log, for the first six months of this year. Recent polls have indicated that approximately 60 percent of law enforcement agencies nationwide have reported a decline in calls for service, during the COVID pandemic. Chester Township is certainly no different, as we too experienced a temporary decline in calls for service, during the first two months of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have taken the appropriate steps to ensure the health, safety and wellness of our employees, while not compromising the level of service to all of you, our community. You can expect the next reporting in early October of this year, which will contain yearto-date information. Finally, on behalf of the men and women of our department, I cannot adequately nor properly acknowledge the sincere level and magnitude of support and appreciation that we have been receiving from all of you. The cards, calls, emails, signs, food and kind words of appreciation have resonated deeply Traffic Hazard & Disabled Vehicles 116 in all of us andTobacco without a doubt, you all continProblem 0 ue to reassure of your trust and support. Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio for over 65 years. Bob loved to dance — or as we like to refer to it, “floated across the dance floor with our mom” — roller skate, bowl, garden, play cards, listen to books and big band music. He also was an avid fisherman. He also loved dogs and had many grandpups he loved to hold. He was a strong man, both physically and emotionally. He made many friends at the Chesterland Senior Center and always had a quick response/joke at the ready. Bob had many amazing caregivers who helped take care of him as their own, allowing him to stay in his own home. To them, we are forever grateful. A private celebration of our father’s life will be held at a later date.
