DeJohn Family Honors Veterans With Flag Retirement Ceremony By Brandon Lichtinger editor@karlovecmedia.com Beneath mild clouds and a steady drizzle, members of the DeJohn family gathered community members together Sept. 12 for their annual Flag Retirement Ceremony at DeJohn Funeral Home and Celebration Center in Chester Township. The event served as a tribute to veterans while providing a dignified retirement ceremony for worn U.S. flags. Ross DeJohn Jr. welcomed attendees, including veterans from all branches of the armed forces, scouts from Local Boy Scout Troop 91, the Chester Township Trustees and representatives from the Northeast Ohio Nurse Honor Guard. “It's been an honor here at DeJohn Funeral Home to serve veterans and their families, and to have started the flag retirement program, which has been running for many years now,” DeJohn Jr. said before the group gathered inside the funeral home. “Not only do we collect worn and tattered flags, but we also, with permission from the families, bury and cremate them with each veteran we serve. ing flags provides a dignified service to the community and to our nation.” DeJohn Jr. then read from the United States Flag Code: “When the flag is in such condition that it's no longer a fitting

emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” DeJohn Jr. explained that this year’s ceremony held deeper significance, coming a day after the See Ceremony • Page 2

25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He asked attendees to observe a moment of silence in remembrance of those who died that day. Following DeJohn Jr.’s remarks, attendees gathered outside beneath the center’s awning for the ceremony, which included a rifle salute from members of Willoughby Hills VFW Post 4358, taps played by Don Maringo, and the raising, lowering and folding of the flag by members of Chardon VFW Post 6519. Under the supervision of retired Lt. William Lee, folded flags were then burned in an outdoor wood-burning fireplace. Attendees were invited to retire flags they had brought with them, which had been folded and stacked near the fireplace, in honor of loved ones who had served. After the ceremony, Ross DeJohn III de-

scribed the community effort that takes place throughout the year to prepare for the event, now in its seventh year. “Throughout the year, we collect worn and tattered flags. A lot of the Boy Scout troops throughout the community will collect them as a service project and bring them to us, there are also some churches that do it,” he explained, adding that in addition to the annual flag retirement ceremony, the funeral home also retires flags through burials and cremations. “We have probably hundreds of these and so, throughout the year, when we have a veteran, we ask the family, would you like to retire a flag and have it buried with the veteran?” he said. “And so, it can be buried with them, or if they’re cremated, we will cremate the flag with them because those are the proper ways to retire the flag in a dignified manner.” He continued: “If you read the whole code of how to properly retire a flag, it’s very

moving in a lot of ways.” DeJohn III said Sept. 12 was chosen for this year’s ceremony because it fell between Flag Day and Veterans Day, while also carrying the added significance of the 25th anniversary of 9/11. DeJohn Jr. further reflected on his family’s longstanding connection to military service and the significance of the ceremony. “I come from a military family. My dad was in the Marine Corps, right between Korea and World War II, my uncle was a full colonel in World War II in the U.S. Air Force, another uncle was in the army, my younger brother was in the army. I was in the army, and I was training to go to Vietnam,” he said. “I was at Fort Benning when they signed the peace treaty and I got RIF’ed. But, we come from a military background and we bury so many veterans that I always wanted to do something special for the veterans. “We just thought we'd do a service for the community, give people an opportunity

to honor their loved ones who served in the military,” he continued. “And so many times, people have flags and they don't know what to do with them. So, they know now they can bring them to us and we can retire with them.” DeJohn Jr. said the public can drop worn flags off at any of the funeral home’s locations for retirement. He said he also hopes the ceremony can serve as a bridge between generations, allowing veterans and other community members to pass down lessons of commitment, self-sacrifice and service. “I'm really big into our heritage, our nationalities and our country, because, you know, the United States is just a big melting pot,” he said. “We're about community, about serving the community. We've just always looked for ways that we can better serve the community, then just, providing a funeral service, a meaningful funeral service, but other ways that we could help people.”

She was born on Dec. 21, 1943, at Huron Road Hospital in East Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Elsie Rose (nee Simmonds) and Karl Evan Hoffacker. Faith attended Charles F. Brush High School and married her lifelong sweetheart, Richard Gilbert Whitcomb Sr., on Nov. 17, 1961, meeting each other at the age of 13. Faith and her husband, affectionally known as “Papa D,” were founding members of Grace Evangelical Bible Church in Newbury Township, Ohio. Letters to the Editor Support Our Township Road Levy I am writing to you asking for your support in voting for the Chester Township 2-mill road levy this fall. It has been 10 years since any new money has been requested. Since that time, the costs to maintain our roads have increased dramatically over the past 10 years, outpacing inflation. As we all know from personal experience, costs continue to rise. The township strives to be responsible with your tax dollars. Many necessary expenses, including asphalt resurfacing, plow trucks, fuel and salt are beyond our control. In-house work such as road culvert replacements (a necessary and ongoing task) save taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars. Our skilled road mechanic performs a great deal of inhouse repairs and maintenance, saving thousands of dollars each year over outsourcing. The 2-mill levy will cost $70 per year for every $100,000 of a home’s market value. For a $300,000 home, that is $210 per year, or less than $20 per month. Under Ohio Revised Code section 5571.02, the township is required to manage its roads and “keep them in good repair.” Safe, well-maintained roads benefit everyone and investing in this essential infrastructure helps the township meet that legal responsibility. Whether by absentee, in person early voting at the Geauga County Board of Elections or at the polls on election day, please vote to support our township roads. Ken Radtke Jr. Chester Township

Vote Yes on the 2-Mill Road Levy Chester Township Trustees unanimously voted yes to put a new road levy on the ballot in this fall and as a resident of Chesterland, I strongly support the proposed 2-mill road levy and encourage my fellow residents to vote YES. Our roads are among the most important public assets we share. Every day, they are used by families commuting to work, students traveling to school, local businesses serving customers and first responders who

depend on safe and reliable roads to protect the residents. Chester Township covers more than 156 total lane miles of road and serves over 10,000 residents, making road maintenance a significant and ongoing responsibility. What makes this levy especially reasonable is that it has been 10 years since Chester Township residents were last asked to provide new funding for road improvements. During those 10 years, inflation has increased by approximately 40%, dramatically raising the cost of asphalt, stone, fuel, equipment, labor and snow removal. Yet, despite those rising costs absorbed by the General Fund, the township has continued maintaining our road network without seeking additional road funding from residents. The reality is simple: roads do not repair themselves. Small cracks become potholes and minor repairs eventually turn into expensive reconstruction projects. Delaying maintenance only increases costs and leaves taxpayers with a much larger bill in the future. Investing now is the fiscally responsible approach. This levy is also about safety. Chester Township is in the heart of Geauga County's snowbelt, where winter weather can be severe and road conditions can deteriorate quickly. Safe, well-maintained roads help protect motorists and ensure police, fire and EMS personnel can respond rapidly when seconds count. Quality roads also help protect property values and preserve the quality of life that makes Chesterland such a desirable place to live. Residents expect safe roads, businesses depend on reliable transportation and prospective homeowners look for communities that invest in their infrastructure. At a time when costs have risen roughly 40% over the past decade and the township has not asked voters for new road funding in 10 years, this levy represents a prudent and necessary investment in our community's future. Maintaining our roads is a basic responsibility that benefits every resident of Chesterland. Please on Nov. 3, support our community, and vote YES on the Chester Township 2-mill road levy.
