“Better days look to be ahead in 2021” Keeping our fingers crossed as 2021 is looking good so far…. 2020 has not been a gearheads friend when it comes to car shows and gearhead style events. Sure it got a little better towards the end of the year here, but overall 2020 has not been a lot of fun for car shows and many other type of events we all love to go to. 2020 has been down right nasty to a lot of things for everyone.

Gearhead fun starts right after the New Year rolls in. Let me throw in a caveat here by saying that different parts of the USA are dealing with the COVID19 situation as they feel they need to. This will have a bearing on events and whether they are able to take place. If you look at our website and click on the CAR SHOW page button, you can see the next 6 months of events as we know it now. We are adding events on a regular basis as they come in. So as I said in the beginning of this article, so far tis looking good and we’re going to be optimistic about 2021. Reality is that COVID19 guidelines will be in place at many events in 2021, especially early in 2021. Not to be a downer about it or political, just realistic about what’s going on in our country. The show promoters and producers will have to follow those guidelines to host their events. Get ready to have some car fun in 2021 Live It Fully Everyday

Events are planned long in advance of the actual show dates and we are fortunate enough to receive the info very earlier to get it listed for you. Based on what we are seeing already, it looks we will be able to have some car fun in 2021. The good news is some of the 5

Brady Ranweiler Wins 2020 SEMA Battle of the Builders Even though SEMA did not physically take place this year, SEMA 360 still held the BATTLE OF TH BUILDERS Competition. The SEMA Battle of the Builders concluded Friday, Nov. 6, during SEMA360, where Brady Ranweiler was named the winner of the annual competition. As per competition rules, the Top 12 finalists performed the judging duties and rated their peers on the quality of their builds. The Top 4 finalists for 2020 were narrowed down just prior to the winner announcement. Top 4 finalists were Brady Ranweiler and his 1963 Chevrolet Full Custom 2Door Wagon (Hot Rod), Mark Giambalvo and his 1965 Chevrolet C10 (Truck/OffRoad), Chip Foose and his 1974 Jaguar EType (Sport Compact), and Young Guns winner Cody Medeisis with his 1968 Chevrolet Camaro. This marks the first time in the seven-year history of the competition that a wagon has taken home the title. The four finalists of this year’s competition will be highlighted along with other featured builders in a nationwide television special airing in 2021. The TV special, SEMA: Battle of the Builders, is scheduled to air on A+E Networks’ FYI and HISTORY’s DRIVE block in January 2021 (time and date to be announced).

The 2020 SEMA Battle of the Builders competition included more than 330 submissions from a pool of builders from around the globe. 6

SEMA 2020: Chevrolet Performance Adds More LS Crate Engines If there’s one company that we love to see at SEMA, it’s Chevrolet Performance. They are always working on creative new parts and accessories perfect for the LS and LT swap crowd. And for 2020, nothing has changed. Even without a physical trade show to attend, Chevrolet Performance has many new items that will surely grab the attention of any enthusiast.

Gen IV LS3 Long Blocks If you’re looking for an LS-based engine for your swap project, Chevrolet Performance has added a few more options to its line up with the Gen IV LS3 based long blocks. According to Chevrolet Performance, these engines are identical to the complete LS3, LS376 rated at 480 horsepower, and the LS376 rated at 525 horsepower. The difference is that they have removed some of the parts from these engines to lower the cost and allow builders to outfit the blocks as they choose. These packages are shipped less intake manifold, throttle body, fuel rails, injectors, coil packs, ignition harness, and exhaust manifold. LS3 long block (PN 19420384) is $6,288.00 LS376-480 (PN 19420384) list for $6,730.00 LS376-525 (PN 19420386) sells for $7,358.00 LS427 Wet Sump Gen IV Engine: If you’re looking for more naturally aspirated power for your vehicle and the sound of 427 cubic-inches has a nice ring to it, Chevrolet Performance’s new LS427 (PN 19421004) might be the ultimate crate engine. Unlike the original, this powerplant is now offered with a wet sump oiling system making it an easy choice for any hot rod. The LS427 offers a larger camshaft than the iconic Z06 and Z28 packages and cranks out an impressive 570 horsepower. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the wet sump LS427 is $15,993 and includes the intake manifold, fuel injectors, coil packs, plug wires, drive-by-wire throttle body, fuel rail, and injectors. You will need to purchase an engine control system and harness available from your Chevrolet Performance dealer. Finish the morning with lunch at Whiskey Trail BBQ & Steakhouse for an incredible meal with your friends! The weather should be nice in the morning and the route will have signs posted as well as route cards to keep you on course. The first event had around 100 vehicles and this should be even bigger. Some of the West’s top automotive builders and owners showed off their colorful customized cars at the 70th Sacramento Autorama at Cal Expo. Once again the show was sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts. Billed as one of the longest-running indoor car shows in the world, this year’s event spotlighted more than 400 custom cars, hot rods, classics, motorcycles and specialty vehicles from across the nation. The vehicles competed for dozens of awards in various classifica31 tions.

As in past years, the show touted the area’s significant role in California’s postWorld War II car-craze era, when Sacramento became known as the “Kustom Capital of the World.”

Live music, celebrity appearances, vendor booths and special exhibits were also set up throughout Cal Expo. In addition to the hundreds of vehicles competing for awards, hundreds more cars were on display in the Butch Gardner Clubhouse at the Cal Expo Pavilion building and the outdoor Autorama Drive-In near Building A on Saturday and Sunday. Numerous awards – including the 8foot-tall H.A. Bagdasarian World’s Most Beautiful Custom award – was handed out on Sunday. The Autorama was started by the late Sacramento businessman Harold Bagdasarian in 1950. While serving as president of the local Capitol City Auto Club Thunderbolts, he talked club members into hosting a show to settle friendly arguments over the merits of their customized cars. The initial show, held at a downtown Sacramento auto dealership, had 22 entries. Bagdasarian promoted subsequent shows, which steadily grew in participation and attendance. Show ownership has changed hands over the years. Current show owner Rancho Cucamonga businessman John Buck, took over in 2005 and runs it and other automotive gatherings under the business name Rod Shows (www.rodshows.com). 32

Besides the massive Bagdasarian trophy, the show’s “Big B” awards pay homage to the Sacramento area’s rich custom-car history: The Sam Barris Memorial Award is a tribute to the late customizing wizard. Along with brother George Barris – the late maker of numerous handcrafted autos appearing in movies and TV series – the Illinois natives moved to Roseville and helped set off the post-World War II California custom-car craze. The Joe Bailon Award recognizes Joe “Candy Apple Red” Bailon, the Northern California customizer who created the color that became synonymous with his name. The Dick Bertolucci Automotive Excellence Award – presented to the car with the best craftsmanship in assembly, fit, finish and detail – is a tribute to the longtime owner of Bertolucci’s Body and Fender Shop in Sacramento. Decades ago, Bertolucci established a national reputation as a top-tier car restorer, and his personal car collection is considered world-class.

Many other awards were handed out to the different class winners too. Add in many vendors and activities for the kids, and a great gearhead weekend was had by everyone in attendance. Make your plans now to attend the 71st SACRAMENTO AUTORAMA in 2021..it only gets better with age.
