Hot rodding owes a lot to our veterans... We don’t know them all, but we owe them all…. Next Wednesday, November 11th, our nation celebrates VETERANS DAY. Veterans Day is the time we recognize ALL Veterans who have served our great country. We recognize the Veterans who have served in all the conflicts our country has experienced. We recognize the Veterans who are still alive, as well as those that have passed away. Most importantly we remember and recognize those people who paid the ultimate price, by giving their life while fighting for our country. These are the true HERO’s of our country.

Military surplus became a way of building hot rods to run on the dry lakes, at Bonneville and on the drag strip too. Think “bomber seats”...from military airplanes, and may other parts too.

Chevrolet Readies An Electric Crate Motor For Homebuilt EV Hotrods Editors Note: We wrote about this 4 months ago and told you it was coming.... There is a growing trend of putting electric propulsion in classic cars. Much of the pioneering work has been done by small aftermarket shops: Zelectric and EV West in California, Electric Classic Cars in the UK, and so on. But increasingly, OEMs are giving it a go as well. For a while, Jaguar was preparing to sell a (very expensive) conversion kit for its XKE-engined cars, although sadly that has been cancelled. Volkswagen has been working with eClassics on an electric conversion of the Type 1 bus. And here in the US, the annual SEMA show has featured some factory-blessed high voltage hot rods for the last couple of years. SEMA is going virtual this year, and one of the cars that Chevrolet will show off will be a 1977 K5 Blazer— called the Blazer-E—that previews the company's new eCrate aftermarket powertrain. The build team traded the Blazer's huge 6.6L V8, with its meagre 175hp (130kW), for the 200hp (150kW) motor from the Bolt EV, which connects to the Blazer's four-wheel drive system via a fourspeed auto that replaces the original three-speed transmission. The fuel tank and exhaust also went in the recycling bin, and a 60kWh lithium-ion battery pack was mounted in the Blazer's cargo area. This is also from the Bolt EV and includes all the wiring and power electronics one needs to manage a modern battery EV powertrain. The really cool thing is that Chevrolet has now confirmed that it will sell a crate electric powertrain to the aftermarket the same way it sells crate internal combustion engines. 6

Who doesn't like cruising at a Drive-In? Nobody we know that is a true hot rodder and gearhead. Cruising at the drive-in’s has been going on since after WWII ended and all the soldiers and sailors came back from saving the world. Restaurants saw an opportunity to get more business by adding drive-in service to their establishments. Hot rodders saw it as a way to show off their cars and grab something to eat at the same time ...a perfect match.

Cruising today has evolved in many ways. There are still drive-in’s that hold cruise nigh that take place at many different locations like malls and shopping centers and other lo 32 like to go to cruise-in’s because they are nothing but fun.

15 years ago John Buck and his team at ROD SHOWS (www.rodshows.com) tried to add something to the Grand National Roadster Show, to add another layer or level of fun if you will, to the hugely popular event. They had all this open space between buildings, lots of open blacktop and the huge park like area that is part of the Pomona Fairplex site. Why not fill it up with hot rods, muscle cars, cool customs and more! That’s exactly what they did when they started the GRAND DADDY DRIVEIN. Fast forward to 2020 and over 750 of the coolest pre-72 cars and trucks were parked all about the show site. The roll in started about 7am and by the tie the GNRS show actually open, most every piece of blacktop and concrete had a cool car or truck sitting on it. While most of the cars were from the So-Cal area, we even saw license plates from outside of California. The Grand Daddy Drive-In even has its own awards ceremony for the participants.

The weather makes it perfect to check out all the great vehicles that came out to be part of the drive-in feature. Quite honestly, we spent most of Saturday outside the GNRS show to take in all of the DriveIn! That’s how much fun it is. We don’t have enough pages to show all the pic’s we grabbed of the cool rides, but here are some of our favorites...enjoy.

Finish the morning with lunch at Whiskey Trail BBQ & Steakhouse for an incredible meal with your friends! The weather should be nice in the morning and the route will have signs posted as well as route cards to keep you on course. The first event had around 100 vehicles and this should be even bigger.
