CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

February in La Quinta feels effortlessly romantic. With peak visitor season in full swing, warm desert evenings invite us to linger a little longer, whether it is over a candlelit dinner, a stroll through Old Town, or a night out enjoying the incredible food and hospitality our city is known for. This is the month that reminds us to slow down and savor the experience.

One of February’s signature highlights is the La Quinta Car Show on February 21st, a favorite seasonal event that brings together residents, visitors, and car enthusiasts from across the region. The energy it creates adds to the excitement of the season, filling our streets with activity and setting the stage for memorable days and evenings out on the town.

Old Town La Quinta becomes the perfect backdrop for date night, where classic cars, twinkling lights, locally owned shops, and inviting restaurants to come together to create a charming and walkable experience.

Valentine’s Day fits beautifully into this moment. It is a reminder that some of the best celebrations do not require travel, just great food, welcoming spaces, and time well spent. Whether it is a reservation at a favorite local restaurant, sharing dessert under the stars, or discovering a new spot close to home, La Quinta offers endless ways to turn an ordinary night into something special.

As the season continues, I encourage everyone, residents and visitors alike, to embrace the romance of February in La Quinta. Support a local restaurant, enjoy an evening in Old Town, attend a community event, and take part in the experiences that keep our city vibrant and thriving.

Thank you for being part of a community that celebrates connection, creativity, and the simple joy of coming together.

Turning Pages, Building Confidence:

How Read With Me Helps Young Readers Thrive

Steve Spurgeon sat in the center of a horseshoe table with six Harry Truman Elementary School third graders in front of him as they took turns reading aloud from the book “James and the Giant Peach.”

He would stop them to help them pronounce and understand the meaning of a new word, such as “peculiar” and “bristly.”

After a few pages, Spurgeon asked them questions about what they had read so far to help with their comprehension.

He also worked with them on punctuation and how an exclamation point, italics or a question mark can convey the tone of a sentence, and he praised them when they did well.

For seven years, Sturgeon has been volunteering with Read With Me, a nonprofit program that helps students with English-language skills for reading, comprehension and speaking.

He sees progress on various levels.

“It’s 70% reading (improvement) and the other 30% is self-confidence and pride in their accomplishments,” Spurgeon said.

Founded in 2003 by Clay and Roberta Klein, who started the program at Mecca Elementary, Read With Me today now has more than 530 volunteer tutors serving 27 schools in all three of the Coachella Valley’s districts.

Read With Me is offered for transitional kindergarten (TK) through fifth grade students in Desert Sands and Palm Springs school districts, and through sixth grade for Coachella Valley Unified, said Sean Webb of La Quinta, director of Literacy Outreach at the Riverside County Office of Education.

The need for more volunteers is ongoing as the program continues to grow and add more classrooms.

The nonprofit program is partnered with the Riverside County Office of Education and the County’s Literacy by Fifth Grade Initiative that strives to improve

students’ reading comprehension and language development.

The primary goal of Read With Me is to assist children in reaching their potential by learning to read, comprehend and speak English.

Experts say developing strong reading skills early is critical not only for academic success, but it impacts vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking. The ability to read builds self-confidence and leads to higher test scores and better graduation rates.

More Volunteers Needed

Read With Me was introduced into the classrooms at Truman Elementary School in La Quinta about two years ago, and Alena Callimanis of La Quinta, program coordinator and regional coordinator, leads the recruiting effort. Every month she is at the Wellness Center sharing information about the program and what it entails.

Volunteers are asked to commit one to two hours per week but often enjoy it so

much they begin adding more hours.

“I can’t tell you how many volunteers started one day a week, finished that first day and are already asking the teacher” if they can come more, Callimanis said. “They’re very dedicated.”

Volunteers undergo background checks and training before they begin working with students. The teachers provide the materials and match the volunteers with the students, working one-on-one or in small groups.

Spurgeon, Wright, Principal Kristin Harper and Assistant Principal Steve Gittings said they all see the positive impacts of Read With Me.

Students Marshall, John and Jayla all said they enjoy reading more.

Marshall thanked Wright for bringing the program into the classroom.

“That’s how I’ve gotten so good at reading,” Marshall said, adding he reads

more on his own now. He especially likes the “Dragonbreath” books which are filled with action, adventure and humor. Jayla said she finds books can awaken her imagination.

“For the books that don’t have pictures, I get to imagine what things look like,” she said. She’s reading the “Dog Man” books by Dav Pilkey, which are fun and adventurous.

John said working with Spurgeon has helped expand his vocabulary.

“He helps me understand what a word means,” John said.

This is the second year Wright has had Read With Me and Spurgeon in her classroom and she enjoys watching her students grow.

“They start reading with a lot more expression and are more excited to read,” she said. “They’re reading fifth grade (level) books and understanding the vocabulary.”

How long a student stays in the program is decided by the teacher. Typically, they are in it for the school year, but it can be shorter or longer.

“I see kids have more confidence to read. I see them with more of a passion, a love for reading,” school Principal Harper said, adding she also notices more discussions among students about what they’re reading.

“I think the students feel more important, more empowered,” she said.

Assistant Principal Gittings said Truman needs more volunteers to expand the program. Last year, when it was first brought into the school, eight teachers wanted it in their classrooms. This year 20 teachers are interested, he said.

“So, the need for more volunteers is definitely there,” Gittings said.

Bilingual, Retired Not Required

This year’s budget for the Read With Me program is $777,000, 100% of which comes through grants and donations and none of which pays Webb’s salary, which is covered by the Riverside County Office of Education.

Expenses include books, given to students for free at book fairs held twice a year at the schools, transportation, and salaries of office personnel who monitor assessment scores of students “to make sure we’re doing the right things,” Webb said.

“My first year with the organization, Alena and I and her sister did the data assessment and that assessment told us that of our CV Unified students, if a student was with one of our volunteers … their scores were going up at least 66% better than a student who wasn’t,” Webb said. “This last year, the same type of thing, 50% or more.”

Assessment results are validated by the districts, Callimanis said.

Volunteers do not have to be bilingual, Callimanis said, adding that the majority of them are English speaking. Transportation is also available to take volunteers to schools outside their communities.

Being retired is also not a requirement.

“We are getting more and more working people who only work maybe three days a week or four,” Callimanis said. “So, we’re getting more people who are not retired because they want to give back to their community.”

These honors underscore the passion and artistry that define the car show and continue to make it a favorite among participants and spectators alike.

“The La Quinta Hot Rod & Custom Car Show brings our community together in a way that celebrates both our love of cars and the spirit of the Coachella Valley,” said Brandon Marley, CEO of the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce. “Each year, this event highlights the vibrant energy of our region while supporting local businesses and creating memorable experiences for families and visitors. We look forward to welcoming the community once again for another outstanding show.”

City leaders also emphasize the event’s role in strengthening community connections and supporting local businesses. “The La Quinta Car Show brings our community together in many ways. Beyond a display of beautiful vehicles, generations gather to enjoy our ‘Gem of the Desert’ spirit. It’s a family-friendly event

that attracts residents and visitors who support local businesses in a spectacular outdoor park setting. Car owners and spectators share reflective memories and create new ones — demonstrating that our close-knit community values classic style and vibrant energy,” said Jon McMillan, City Manager of La Quinta.

The 2026 La Quinta Hot Rod & Custom Car Show is made possible through the generous support of its sponsors. Title Sponsors include Coachella Valley Firebirds, Los Firebirds, and La Quinta Chevrolet Cadillac, with BMW Performance Center serving as the Presenting Sponsor. Their continued partnership helps ensure the event remains accessible and enjoyable for the entire community.

Visitors are also encouraged to explore nearby Old Town La Quinta, where local shops, restaurants, and attractions will offer additional opportunities to enjoy the day and support local businesses.

As one of La Quinta’s signature annual events, the Hot Rod & Custom Car Show continues to celebrate nostalgia, creativity, and community connection, drawing attendees from across the region year after year.

DAP Health’s 32nd Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards

For more than three decades, fundraising gala the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards (affectionately known as The Chase) has been one of the desert’s most iconic and impactful evenings — a night when philanthropy, friendship, and entertainment come together to fuel health equity for tens of thousands across Southern California. On Saturday, February 21, the tradition continues at the Palm Springs Convention Center, proudly presented by Desert Care Network, as more than 1,000 guests gather to celebrate compassion in action.

More Than a Gala. A Movement!

At The Chase, showing up means standing up. Every seat purchased, every sponsorship pledged, and every paddle raised become a force for good — supporting DAP Health’s mission to provide care to more than 88,000 people at 25 locations and six mobile units.

Founded in 1984 in response to the AIDS crisis, DAP Health has grown into one of the nation’s most respected community health center networks. Its unwavering commitment to inclusiveness and dignity has transformed lives for over four decades, ensuring no one is left behind, regardless of income, immigration status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

The Chase honors this spirit. Year after year, the event has attracted Hollywood legends, Grammy-winning artists, visionary philanthropists, and courageous community leaders, all united by a shared belief that health care is not a privilege but a human right.

This Year’s Spotlight: Lisa Middleton

DAP Health will proudly honor Lisa Middleton, whose leadership has left an indelible mark on Palm Springs and beyond. From expanding affordable housing to advocating for seniors, veterans, and working families, she has led with both heart and resolve. Her

recognition with the Community Service Award shines a light not just on her remarkable achievements, but on the values she embodies: integrity, inclusivity, and the courage to lead authentically.

“Lisa Middleton has given so much of herself to this community, with heart, integrity, and a deep commitment to making Palm Springs a place where everyone belongs,” says DAP Health Board Vice Chair and Gala Chair Kevin Bass. “Honoring her is our way of expressing gratitude for the countless ways she’s lifted us all.”

A Legendary Soundtrack: The Temptations

Adding to the magic, The Temptations will headline this year’s gala. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, winners of multiple Grammys, and the voices behind timeless hits like “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” The Temptations are more than a musical act, they are living history.

Their songs have defined generations, bridging divides and inspiring joy. For gala guests, the chance to sway to their soulful harmonies will be both a celebration of music and a reminder of the power of legacy, a perfect echo of The Chase’s enduring mission.

A Tradition of Compassion

Named in honor of Steve Chase, the world-renowned interior designer and philanthropist whose generosity helped DAP Health flourish in its earliest days, the gala has become one of the Coachella Valley’s signature events. It carries his legacy forward, inviting each new generation to join the cause and invest in a future where everyone can access highquality, affirming care.

LIFE SIMPLIFICATION | NON-CASH ASSETS

When most people think about making a charitable gift, they think of giving cash from a checking or savings account. While we appreciate gifts of any kind to help support our cause, there are many ways that you can give and benefit through making a gift of other assets.

Making a gift of non-cash assets can help you in the following ways:

 If you give appreciated assets, you can avoid paying capital gains tax.

 You will receive a charitable deduction for your gift which can lower your tax bill.

 You can make a gift today while preserving your cash for immediate or future needs.

 You and your family can receive benefits such as lifetime income and become part of our 24/7 Recognition program.

 You may be able to make greater gifts than you ever thought possible.

When we found out we could donate our property outright, we happily donated 100% of the property ownership to Eisenhower via deed. By doing so, we could help the hospital, as well as enjoy the substantial tax write-off, and for multiple years.
