President’s Message Andy Cordova As I sit down to write this president's message, fall is upon us. Baseball season is winding down with the playoffs approaching, football season is in full swing, the FedEx cup season has ended, Andy Cordova and the Ryder Cup is over. In the baseball world, regular season came down to an extra game in both leagues for the wild card spot and my Giants are nowhere to be found. Our rival Dodgers, on the other hand, are working their way in to either the wild card spot or 1st place in the NL West pending their matchup against the Rockies. In the land of football, controversy still looms over the NFL which has many people watching college instead. In my mind, college is more exciting anyway.

Apparently the PGA is going to adjust the points for next year's playoffs to prevent this from happening again and only have one champion on the final day.

By Kurtis Wolford California BMP Update by Kurtis Wolford, Cherry Island G.C. and Representative to the California GCSA BMP Committee: As we go into fall season the California GCSAA BMP and Blankinship & Associates are diligently working on drafting the documents. It has been a slow evaluation process. With having many people involved in the evaluation of the documents with a list legitimate concerns for their respective regions it tends to slow the process. This evaluation by the BMP committee is represented by each GCSAA chapter in the state. California is one of the most difficult states to write a state BMP from the sole reasons of our climatic diversity and our regulatory compliance. A BMP document that is drafted for San Diego would not work for Sacramento or the Tahoe region. The BMP document that is being drafted is one the end user of it can apply it to their respective region. In brief, BMPs provide:

Examples to help BMP users develop the essential protocol’s to adhere to regulatory agency’s requirements We are developing the BMPs based on technical information from the national GCSAA document and specific needs for California, and existing standards. BMP’s are important and that need to work correctly. They are simply the best way to do things and have been worked

out through trial and error, and are found to be the most sensible way to accomplish task. They will assist the user and help point them in the correct direction to learn what state agencies administer laws and regulations. Having a State Golf Course BMP Guide that is accredited and has the approval of multiple agencies is very important for the golf industry going forward. It will help serve as a buffer when state agencies and politicians come after the golf industry with bad intentions. It gives us a vetted document to show them that we are doing things correctly and using a BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICE So far the completed chapters are Groundwater and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The chapters up next are Pollinators, Urban Golf and Air Quality. We are hoping to have everything finalized in 2019 and ready for distribution. When the document is released an education meeting will follow for each GCSAA chapter.

Around The Green By Mike Cline Welcome to the “Fall” edition of Around the Green, with cooler temperatures, and even a little rain has fallen in some places of the state. Still potential for wild fires so hopefully everyone keeps there guard up until we get a bit more moisture in the ground. We have several changes to our membership to report currently. Superintendent Tom Elliott CGCS, Monarch Dunes Golf Course has retired and moved to Northern California. I’ve been told that Tom will be spending part of the year on a large ranch and will be acting as the property care-taker when the owners aren’t around and the balance of the year at his home in the Pismo area. We all wish Tom the best in his retirement. Superintendent Matt Nowlan,
Laguna Lake Golf Course, has accepted a job with the City of Alameda as the City Park’s lead. Matt told me the chance for advancement made the decision easy although he will miss San Luis Obispo. The interim superintendent will be Vladimir Cruz until this city makes its final decision. Superintendent Mark Weitz, Alisal Guest Ranch reports that he is currently working on his PGA Certificate as a way of broadening his resume in these tumultuous times. Mark reports that he is at level 1 of the 3-step process. I believe Glenn Matthews is also working on his PGA Certificate as well. Speaking of working to improve your resume and broaden your employment desirability, I can report that Mark Weitz and Andy Cordova have tested and received PCA licenses which they can not only use as Superintendents but something for the back pocket should they consider jobs outside the ranks of a Golf Course Superintend. 2019 Show and Conference. This year’s event will feature 89 seminars (39 new) as well as a couple of new education tracks focused on mental health and water management. Seminars are available in 1.5hour, 2-hour, 4-hour and fullday sessions. Seminar costs for members are $70, $85, $135 and $185 respectively. Numerous tours and field trips will be available highlighted by the Equipment Management Tour at Barona Creek, the Hunter Irrigation Tour and the First Green Field Trip/Training Seminar at Bonita Golf Course. The cost of the learning tours is $205 per tour. Housing and early registration for GCSAA members opens on Oct. 16. Early registration price for members is $450 and registration will be available at http://www.golfindustryshow.c om/.
