Welcome to 2021 members! If you are like me you were happy to turn the page on 2020 and welcome in the New Year. As an association we are off to a great start. On January 25th I had the honor and privilege of hosting the first association event of the year at Visalia Country Club, our annual election meeting. Considering the frigid temperature of the day I thought the turnout was great. I can honestly say I have never been colder during a round of golf. At the event the 2021 board of directors was elected for the coming year. The officers and directors remain the same as the 2020 board. Here is your 2021 board of directors;

If you are unable to serve on the board you can still contribute to the association by attending an event. The board has been working hard to develop a full calendar of events for 2021. March 1st the Central Cal and Sierra Nevada Chapters will co-host, along with GCSAA, a BMP seminar designed to help superintendents develop a BMP document for their facility. I hope you all had a chance to experience the 2021 virtual Golf Industry Show. While nothing can replace meeting all of our members and industry professionals in person, the show proved to be a successful alternative as we continue to slowly work our way out of the pandemic. Over 9,400 attendees and more than 200 vendors participated in Jeff Jensen the three-day education and trade show that was held on the virtual platform Ugo with the AllAccess facility and individual proving to be by far the most popular package choice.
Alliance for Golf being recognized as the winner of the 2020 Government Affairs Award for their work on the advocacy front. CAG does a terrific job representing golf’s best interests in the state. We appreciate all of your support as well as the support of industry in making this show successful. We hope to see everyone in person next February in San Diego, virus permitting. The show featured 88 education sessions, numerous special events including the traditional Opening and Closing Sessions, the virtual trade show, awards ceremonies and the GCSAA Annual Meeting where Mark Jordan, CGCS at Westfield Country Club in Westfield Center, OH was elected as the President of the association. California’s own Kevin Breen, CGCS at La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos will serve as Vice President and Kevin Sunderman, CGCS at Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club in St. Petersburg, FL will serve as Secretary/Treasurer. Some of the highly attended sessions included an industry roundtable moderated by GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans that featured the USGA’s Mike Davis, PGA Tour’s Jay Monahan, PGA of America’s Seth Waugh and the LPGA Tour’s Mike Whan. The Behind the Scenes at PGA Frisco also proved to be popular as many attendees were interested in learning more about the PGA of America’s new headquarters and 36-hole facility located in Frisco, TX. Other highlights included legendary CBS Sportscaster Jim Nantz receiving the Old Tom Morris Award, retired USGA Director of Green Section Research Dr. Mike Kenna receiving the GCSAA Distinguished Service Award, Purdue University winning the GCSAA Collegiate Turf Bowl (Cal Poly Pomona placed 5th) and the California Official Publication of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of Central California. Around the Green by Jim Culley & Matt Graves We have had a few moves in the association since our last report. On the coast past president Andy Cordova has taken on a new position. He is now the superintendent over Blacklake G.C. and Avila Beach Resort. Congratulations to Andy on this move. Cypress Ridge will be hiring a superintendent and you should see some emails on that coming soon. Paul Barr is in full swing with a construction project at the course. The front 9 was closed since October and the back nine will close in March. The whole course should be open back open to the membership by May. We will be putting together a full article on this project hopefully by our next issue. In the valley we have two new superintendents. Tom Lipscomb at Seven Oaks C.C. in Bakersfield has joined our association, and at Stockdale Country Club they have hired Rob Lampsom as their superintendent. We had the opportunity to meet both of the gentlemen at the Visalia event and we welcome both of these individuals to our association and will hopefully see them at some of our future events. In addition to the south valley we have to report that that Tom Karrar at Turlock Golf & C.C. has retired. He is being replaced by Tom Slevin, previously from Napa Golf Course. Congratulation to Tom on his retirement and best of luck on his new adventures. Also in the valley Eagle Springs continues their search for a superintendent. From what we hear because of high demand for equipment in the golf industry there seems to be a wide spread shortage of new equipment. We are being told that this is do to Covid and the slow production, and the new demand. If you are experiencing any of these difficulties let us know. In May we will be sharing a joint vendor day with Sierra Nevada Chapter. That will be held on May 7, 2021 at Woodbridge Golf & C.C. This event will feature hands on opportunity to see and test equipment, view new products, etc. Look for more information on this event. Visalia Country Club Highlights Annual Meeting 2022 It was a super cold day for the annual meeting held on January 25th at Visalia Country Club but the turnout was good and the group was happy to see one another.
