President’s Message Glenn Matthews, CGCS golf games and award academic scholarships to worthy applicants. This year 3 scholarships were awarded. Michael Stieler Jr. was awarded a turf scholarship to continue his studies at Fresno State. Stephen Culley and Bryn Kroeze were awarded Legacy Scholarships as immediate family members of members of our association. In the fall Stephen will commence studies in economics and math at UC San Diego. Bryn is transferring to Fresno State to pursue a degree in Food & Nutritional Sciences.

Welcome back!
Over 60 association members and guests attended the 2021 Al Glaze Memorial Scholarship tournament at San Joaquin Country Club on June 7th. If you were not there you completely missed out on one of the best scholarship events in recent memory. We were hosted by the team at San Joaquin CC lead by Dario Olivares, Superintendent, Tommy Masters, General Manager, and Paul Cushing, club consultant. The day started with Paul and Dario making a great presentation highlighting recent renovations at the course, which included a complete renovation of all bunkers, renovation of several greens, and removal of hundreds of trees. The course played beautifully and the weather was great.
Early this month I had the opportunity to participate in the event at Del Rio Country Club for the annual Tri -Chapters meeting. Which was hosted by the Sierra Nevada Chapter. This event is always well attended and this year was no exception. Superintendent at Del Rio C.C., Dave Bermudez, hosted and shared insight about recent renovations at the Modesto club and Jeff Jensen provided valuable information on California drought as well as important information on employee recruiting ideas.
Unfortunately our Field Day at Ridge Creek Golf Course in Dinuba will be rescheduled and we are still working on our Annual Charities Event in October, but in December we will return to our Holiday Event in Morro Bay at Windows on The Water as we have in years past. Mark your calendars and get involved! Our events are better when you attend. See you soon,

GCSAA recently launched its revised app “GCSAA Now” in the Apple Store as well as on Google Play. GCSAA Now gives you GCSAA news and information in the palm of your hands. Download documents, interact with fellow members, update your membership info and more. Some of the new features include:

Login once, and you are in. Simple and easy to access! Relevant, up to date GCSAA news and content. Includes an RSS Feed to GCSAA news and a direct link to GCSAA’s Twitter account. Stay up to date on government relations and public policy, Jeff Jensen GCSAA programs, special events and much more. • Interact with other members through the discussions and private messaging features. • Find other members in your geographic proximity with the Near Me feature. • Keep track of national and local GCSAA happenings with the Events feature. Includes an up-to-date calendar of chapter events and functions. The My Schedule feature allows you to add GCSAA related functions you want to attend to your app scheduler or phone calendar. Have easy access to membership documents and other information in the resources section. COVID-19 assistance, First Green, education, certification and disaster resources are all available on the app. Even submit your GCSAA points!
To make the most of your experience, if you previously used the GCSAA Mobile app, delete that before downloading the new version. Once you have downloaded the app, just use your current GCSAA login and password to access it. The apps are available free of charge. If you need assistance with your login and password credentials, simply call our Members Services Department at 800472-7878 and they can assist you on the spot. Additionally, GCSAA is offering a chapter competition for members downloading the app by July 30. The chapter with the most downloads as well as the chapter with the highest percentage of members downloading the app will each win $500. It’s automatically tracked, so nothing additional to do! I hope that you enjoy the new app and find it a useful tool for improving your membership experience. 2021 Scholarship Recipients The Golf Course Superintendents Association of Central California raises funds from various sources to fund our ongoing Scholarship and Research (S&R) Program. The S&R Program annually funds scholarships to deserving turfgrass and ornamental horticulture students throughout Central California and the Central Coast areas and Golf Course staff attending college or university in these fields. Scholarships are awarded annually to assist students that plan to stay within the industry and be our leaders of the future. In 2018 through the generosity of the Steve Scarbrough family and the members of Bakersfield Country Club where Steve worked for many year, we were granted additional funds to offer additional turfgrass and ornamental horticulture scholarships that will we have granted every year since then. The name of this scholarship is now known as the Steve Scarbrough, CGCS Memorial Scholarship. This year the winner of the Steve Scarbrough, CGCS Memorial Scholarship was granted to Michael Stieler. Michael is the son of Michael Stieler,CGCS from Spring Creek C.C. and a member of our chapter for many years. Michael has started Fresno State Univ. this fall to complete his degree in Earth Science. Michael says after graduation he will look for a position as an Assistant Superintendent with hopefully fulfilling his dream of becoming a superintendent. The Legacy Awards winners this year were Bryn Kroeze, Daughter of Michael Kroeze, CGCS of Kings River Country Club in Kingsburg. Bryn will also be Michael Stieler & Glenn Matthews, CGCS attending Fresno State University majoring in Food and Nutritional Science in hopes to become a Registered Dietician. Also winning a Legacy Award this year are Stephen Culley, son of Jim Culley of Seed King. Stephen will be studying mathematics and economics while attending college and has special interests in the Movie and Sports industry. We are pleased that we were able to assist these wonderful young people in achieving their dreams and look forward to hearing about all their accomplishments.

2021 Tri Chapter Highlights There were almost 80 attendees from the three northern California Chapters. There were lots of questions for the speakers which included Dave Bermudes, discussing the projects that he has been working on for over two year. Jeff Jensen made a presentation regarding our state drought regulations as well as some tips on hiring employees and Dr. Jim Baird. Steve Showers and Dean Kinney
