President’s Message Andy Cordova Football season is here! The end of summer means a few things: football season is here, baseball season is in the midst of the playoff race, and the golf season has Andy Cordova come to an end; but, more importantly it means the valley will start getting relief from the summer heat. For us coastal guys, the weather doesn’t change much other than a little less daytime fog. We have had a very mild summer over here on the coast. While we normally have a few days each summer that get over 90º, I don't remember any days so far this summer in the Five Cities area that were that warm. I know, you valley guys are giving me a strange look right now. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop in the next couple of months to make up for the cooler than usual summer days we’ve had so far.
As we enter the last part of the growing season, and the year overall, I'm wondering where this past year has gone. I remember writing this message last year and talking about my wife and I expecting the birth of our first child at any moment. He was born days after that article was written and now he just turned one. I'm constantly reminded by everyone around me of how quickly time goes when you have a child and now I completely understand. It's been a great year watching him hit his milestones and develop quite the personality. Nothing could quite prepare us for what exactly to expect and it’s been an unbelievable journey so far.

The document, while rather lengthy, covers all aspects of golf course maintenance here in California and we have the ability to add or delete sections as needed. This will be an extremely useful tool for us as Superintendents. Thank you Jeff for helping out with this meeting, everything went very well. Also, thank you to Steve for hosting the meeting. From the Field Jeff Jensen, GCSAA Field Staff, Southwest Region After years of hard work, the California Golf Course Superintendents Association, with assistance from its allied golf Jeff Jensen partners, recently published the California Golf Industry Best Management Practices Guide (BMPs). Developed using the Best Management Practices Planning Guide and Template created by the GCSAA, California has been working on the project for two years. The California Golf Industry BMP Committee includes superintendents from each of the California GCSA’s six regional chapters (Central California, Hi-Lo Desert, Northern California, San Diego, Sierra Nevada, Southern California) as well as the California Alliance for Golf, California Golf Course Owners Association, GCSAA,
Southern California Golf Association, Southern California PGA, University of California Cooperative Extension and the USGA. The committee employed the services of Blankinship & Associates, Inc. out of Davis, Calif. to serve as the environmental consultant and project manager. The BMP guide features 17 sections: Planning, Design and Construction; Irrigation; Surface Water Management; Water Quality Management; Nutrient Management; Cultural Practices; Integrated Pest Management; Pesticide Management; Pollinator Protection and Enhancement; Maintenance Operations; Landscape and Out of Play Areas; Energy; Groundwater Management; Air Quality; Threatened and Endangered Species; Urban Golf and Seaside Golf. Along with the BMPs and links to state regulations and agencies, a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS) section is available at the end of each section which serves as
a quick reference for everyday situations and questions that a golf course superintendent may be confronted with. The guide was financed through the annual California GCSA “California Room” hospitality event held yearly at the Golf Industry Show as well as $15,000 in grants from GCSAA. The digital platform allows superintendents to customize the guides to the unique needs of their facility or agronomic region and can be printed in either a PDF or Word format for distribution to policymakers, golfers, environmental groups, regulatory agencies and communities. Access to the document is free of charge for GCSAA members. View the document in its entirety here. 2019 Tri Chapter Meeting Highlights It was an absolutely beautiful day in Stockton for the Tri Chapter meeting and Brookside Country Club looked amazing. Enjoying the day were Andy Cordova, Paul Barr, and Mike Cline.

2019 Charity Event Belmont Country Club event and be prepared to have a great time. With an abundance of trees and water, this 18 hole championship golf course is one of the more challenging in the valley and should be an opportunity for you to bring your friends or your crews to enjoy a great day of golf as well as raise money for a worthy cause. Look for more information to come and don’t forget to donate a raffle item as well.
