UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’ Journey to a sustainable future
Voorwoord
Wij zetten weer een volgende stap
D
We are taking the next step
The Ekofish Group stands for innovation and this ship is a testament to that. An entirely new design that deviates from traditional fishing vessels in important aspects. Innovations in the field of cooling and processing guarantee even higher quality fish. CO2 emissions and fossil fuel consumption are significantly reduced thanks to the use of electrical energy.
he Ekofish Group stands for a sustainable world of fresh quality fish. We don’t want to sit back satisfied with the achieved result. No, we are continuously working on improving ourselves in terms of sustainability and quality. We have taken the next step with the construction of the new UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’.
Besides quality and durability, attention is also paid to animal-friendly work on the vessel thanks to the use of electric anaesthesia immediately after the catch. The Ekofish Group is a leader in this field. We were the first company in Europe to be awarded an MSC label for flatfish in 2009. We are convinced that we are again a trendsetter when it comes to durability and animal-friendly work. This is one of our goals as a company and what the customer demands from us. We serve the market with our private Ekofish Group Premium label and can see an increasing demand for wild-capture fish. Our product gives the consumer the sense of eating good and safe food caught with love for nature. The construction of the UK 105 is necessary to meet this increasing demand. Ekofish Group is growing steadily to the volume that can be caught by approximately 5 vessels, with plaice being the main product. There is sufficient room for a third own ship, in addition to the partners. As a historical fishing company, we also think about the future of the next generations. By this investment, we want to prepare not just our own company for the future, but the entire fishing sector. Louwe de Boer

Ekofish De UK 105 ‘Spes Nova‘ is heel anders
UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’ Journey to a sustainable future
The UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’ is completely different
‘Innovation is in our DNA’ How can we build a highly efficient ship without just following old patterns? That was the question when we were drafting plans for the new UK 105. This is why Ekofish Group consciously chose Vripack Yachting to convert their specification of requirements into a ship design. ‘A new name when it comes to designing fishing vessels and we were pleasantly surprised by them. It really is something completely different and it will be a great vessel,’ according to Louwe de Boer. ‘When drafting the specification of requirements, the technical starting point for this twinrigger/
Journey to a sustainable future UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’
flyshooter simply was: how can we design a ship which can drag the fishing net through the water at a desired speed using as little engine power as possible. Furthermore, the ship should have a fish hold capacity of 1,450 crates,’ De Boer tells. It eventually resulted in a magnificent design which looks futuristic. The ship of 470 GT has distinct lines and a sharp bow which cuts through the waves but does not plunge too deep into them. ‘The resistance should be kept at a minimum for this ship which is 32 metres long and still has a considerable width of 9.60 metres. The draught will be 5 metres. Compared to our current ships, we were able to reduce the engine power by 30 to 40% to 1,000
kW, which will save fuel consumption. This also is the result of powering the ship by a combination of diesel and electricity, where peak demand can be alleviated by the use of battery electricity. Therefore the load of the generators never needs to exceed 80%, which will contribute to low fuel consumption and lower emission of harmful substances,’ Louwe de Boer indicates. In addition to the electric main engine of 1,050 kW, the ship will also be fitted with three generator sets of 500 kW each, which will ensure proper energy supply for this main engine, the electricity aboard and for charging the large battery pack.
5
hoeft.
UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’ Journey to a sustainable future
‘We are benefiting from the developments in the car industry as regards batteries. Our winches run on electricity and when entering a port for example, the ship can also sail fully on electricity. The generators supply power on the basis of demand and often in practice no more than two generators will be running. The batteries also ensure that in case of short peak demand, it is not necessary to switch on a generator first. This makes the work on board much more enjoyable.’ Another innovation is that the energy which is released when the fishing lines are set, is recovered and stored in the batteries. All in all the Ekofish Group thinks that it will not use more than 15 tonnes of fuel per week with the UK 105, which is a substantial reduction compared to for example the PD 147, which operates in the same fishery segment.
Journey to a sustainable future UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’
Fish processing The processing of fish on board ship is fully automated and this cuts the processing time by half compared to conventional ships, which improves the quality. The catch is instantly refrigerated on board ship in a bath of 0 degrees Celsius. After that the fish are stunned using electricity and gutted automatically by the Jansen/FMO gutting machine. By the way, this gutting machine was developed by Ekofish Group itself in collaboration with these two companies! The fish then goes into a pre-cooler and are subsequently stored in a refrigerated fish hold. ‘This way we ensure that our fish are super fresh and that they do not leave the cooling chain until they reach the supermarket,’ Louwe de Boer says with pride. Vripack’s experience does not only show from the design but also from the means of communication.
‘Soon everything will be remote-controlled, so you will be able to turn on all equipment with your iPad when heading aboard. In addition, energy consumption will soon become completely transparent, so you can see for example how a slightly higher speed affects energy consumption and how many euros extra this will cost. This way you will use energy more consciously. Given the uncertainty about the Brexit we chose a ship under the Dutch flag. ‘We were able to obtain one of the last large licences to build this ship; furthermore sufficient quotas are available in Netherlands and the investment climate is favourable. With this ship we are taking the next step in terms of sustainability and quality. And with this design we also show that innovation is in Ekofish Group’s DNA,’ Louwe de Boer concludes.

Maaskant Shipyards
UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’ Journey to a sustainable future
“The Spes Nova is drawing lots of attention abroad” Maaskant Shipyards is the primary contractor for the construction of the UK 105 Spes Nova. The company, part of the Damen Shipyards Group, will deliver the ship in 2019. The bodywork will be built under supervision in Poland; Stellendam carries out the complete finishing. For Maaskant, “it is a great challenge to build such a top-of-the-line ship,” Managing Director Frits van Dongen recently said in Visserijnieuws. Eric Moerkerk also sees it as a wonderful opportunity for Maaskant to benchmark itself again in the fishing

industry. That should not be difficult, considering the striking design by Vripack in Sneek and its many novelties. The lines on the exterior make the 32-metre ship look bigger than it is. The diesel-electric propulsion (1,000 kW) is supported by a battery pack that allows for the storage of recovered energy as the nets are cast and veered. The target fuel consumption is 15 tonnes per week. Moerkerk: “The energy management system, developed in collaboration with suppliers and Louwe de Boer (the client), is downright progressive. Using three sets of linked Caterpillar generators for propulsion, plus a port set and a battery pack for recovered energy, we
are providing an effective, efficient and therefore sustainable power network. I can’t remember every seeing something like this on this large a scale in the fishing industry.” The design, with its tapered and robust hull, also deviates from the standard. “I have just returned from Danfish, the Danish trade fair, where our images of the Spes Nova were displayed. There was plenty of praise for a ship which has yet to be built. The Spes Nova is already drawing lots of attention abroad.” Moerkerk expects that, in terms of performance, the UK 105 will be at least
9
het buitenland nu al volop aandacht.” De UK 105, zo verwacht Moerkerk, zal wat prestaties betreft minimaal gelijkwaardig zijn aan andere flyshooters in de vloot, “terwijl de brandstofkosten aanmerkelijk lager zullen zijn.” equivalent to other fly-shooters in the fleet, “while the fuel costs will be significantly lower.” Maaskant Shipyards will ensure that the UK 105 can become operational as early as in 2019. Space has been reserved in Poland at a branch of the Damen Shipyards Group, the mother company, to build the bodywork. The Stellendam company has been part of this international shipbuilding group since 1984. As a group, Damen delivers approximately 180 ships per year. In addition to building ships, Maaskant provides various other full-service activities, such as maintenance and repair, at different locations, which include the three docks in Stellendam. That is where Piet Maaskant and his two sons started their repair company in 1948, serving the local mussel and shrimp fleet. In the beginning, they only maintained winches. Later, they also started manufacturing them and this is still the case today. Today, the company has grown to be a primary contractor with numerous suppliers that are also making a valuable contribution to the unique Spes Nova ship building project.
Moerkerk, the son of a former fisherman, notices plenty of movement in the market. “That has been the case for a number of years already. It’s not ‘full speed ahead’ yet, due to uncertainties related to Brexit, the landing obligation and electric pulse fishing licences, but once those issues are resolved, things could go fast. The fishing industry is currently a replacement market. Many ships are at least twenty years old. There’s room to invest again, because similar or higher earnings in combination with lower costs yield higher revenues. Sustainability, another must in today’s fishing industry, is pushing developments forward.”

“A virtual reality session saves a lot of money”
Journey to a sustainable future UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’
Vripack Yachting International Naval Architects developed the surprising design of the UK 105 Spes Nova. A stateof-the-art fishing ship with ‘yacht-building’ accents from striking lines and a pointed bow to extra comfort on board. Yacht designer Vripack, located in Sneek, regularly works for the commercial shipping industry. All the same, the request by Urk fishing entrepreneur Louwe de Boer to design a flyshooter was an entirely new challenge for Ierring Faber and Robin de Vries. Faber: “Yacht building remains our core business, but for years now, we have also been designing vessels on behalf of the commercial shipbuilding industry. For example, in the offshore sector, there is currently a great demand for fast working vessels with extra comfort on board. Such demands touch on yacht building. That explains why clients in the offshore sector are contacting us more and more often.” Vripack had had prior contact with Louwe de Boer, owner-to-be of the Spes Nova, about the possibility of building multi-purpose vessels for fishing and offshore activities. The Urk entrepreneur liked the fresh insights and styling Vripack offered. “There is wide recognition of the fact that an optimised design with less installed capacity at the same speed can lead to fuel savings,” says Robin de Vries. The design and interplay of lines by Vripack has other advantages as well. “The available square metres were dealt with efficiently, which is especially noticeable in the spacious fish-processing deck and the enormous fish compartment with a minimum number of steps. The lines on the exterior create an optical effect of length and a modern look. The visual length is much longer that way. In addition, the square metres in crucial spaces such as the crew mess and the fish-processing and storage areas were put to optimum use. This creates more holding capacity and allows the fishermen room for a larger winch set, for example.”

The bow looks strong and robust and will soon be cutting smoothly through the waves of the North Sea. Ierring Faber: “By changing the conventional layout, we made it possible for the Spes Nova to trim as naturally as possible. Fishing vessels traditionally lean back somewhat, especially when their hold is full, which has a negative effect on the ideal streamlines. Our focus was ‘forward’. We had to scale back our original concept a little, but by locating the wheelhouse and the fish compartment a bit more at the front, the weight components under various circumstances have now been divided in a more balanced way.” Like our client, the Ekofish Group, the designers recognizes that they use a fresh approach in the sector. The gradual renewal previously used with other flyshooters and twinriggers goes forward step by step, expects De Vries. Faber: “If the ship actually performs with nice budgets and a very satisfied crew, it definitely inspires other shipowners and family companies to take a step and also think more out of the box.” The design of the Spes Nova proves is another proof of Vripack’s growing reputation. “The unique combination of our specialists in design and engineering and our experience in yacht building and the offshore sector results in eye-catching products,” says Faber. Out of the 80 people working at Vripack, a team of 12 engineers was composed specifically for the UK 105. “An additional novelty,” says Robin de Vries, “is that we now prepare a virtual reality session for our clients. Even before the ship is built, we show the crew its lines of sight, interior, deck and aft situations. This experience and the feedback resulting from it allow us to make adjustments where necessary. Over the past few years, Vripack has gained valuable experience with this in yacht building as well. It does not only save clients a lot of money, but also leads to more efficient ships and a more satisfied crew.”
14

Pon Power

“Parallel circuit generator sets save costs” Pon Power’s shipping division in Papendrecht supplies among other things ship’s engines and power units. “For the Spes Nova we delivered the entire electrical drive,” explains John Pruissen who together with his colleagues Noud Seegers and Taco Boorsma provide services geared to the fishing industry. Working at various Caterpillar divisions, Pruissen made his mark in the sector well before 2000. He has been active in the fishing industry again since 2016, this time with Pon Power. Pruissen: “Optimism has returned to the fishing sector; space to make money is opening up again, as well as for investment and innovation.”
Together we considered the various options regarding power supply during the preliminary phase. We chose three identical types of C18 generator sets, each delivering 565 EKW at 60Hz, plus a port set (C 4.4, 99 EKW at 50Hz). The installation is a fully parallel set-up, linked to a power management system. This has a number of advantages; for one, every week the skipper can start with a different generator set. When the vessel registers a loading below a certain level, one of the generator sets will automatically switch off. This means that every individual engine benefits from reduced operating hours annually; good for maintenance and saves fuel. We have no control over the price of fuel, but we can influence its consumption.
Pruissen knows the people at Spes Nova from the past. “I used to supply engines to Meindert de Boer, Louwe’s father, who now heads the Ekofish Group.
Another advantage of an electrical drive is that the built-in battery system can store recovered electricity. Energy is generated and captured
Journey to a sustainable future UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’
for example when the nets are cast by releasing the winch. Pruissen: “We come from an era of mechanical engines. If you want to reduce fuel consumption, generate less emissions and store energy, the fishing industry needs to realise that innovation, such as in the MDV project, is key to the fishing industry’s survival. The Spes Nova goes even one step further by going entirely diesel-electric, including the winches.”

DMT Marine Equipment
“You can reclaim energy with hybrid winches”
DMT Marine Equipment, an international company with nine branches worldwide, boasts an enviable reputation in the supply of winches. “We create, supply and maintain winches, something we’ve been doing for 17 years, including for the fishing industry,” explains Piet ter Schure from the company’s Dutch office in Zwolle. “As with any smart company, DMT is proactively innovative and therefore completely at home with state-of-the-art hybrid technology. In practice we work together with shipyards, where various vessels have already been equipped with this technology.” Ter Schure is convinced that hybrid wench packages are also certainly an excellent option for the fishing industry: “When casting nets stretching from eighthundred meters or more, you can reclaim energy from the winches by converting the resistance created by the nets in the water. An electrical winch will then start turning in the opposite direction, similar to a dynamo for a bicycle light. Part of this reclaimed energy can be stored in batteries. For the fishing industry this is something of a novelty, but I expect with current pressure towards sustainability and saving fuel this will rapidly change.” In fishing, Ter Schure continues, for a very long time everything was hydraulic. “It was more a question of just topping up the diesel and get going. Now we think a lot more carefully about saving energy, emission standards and cost savings; particularly in fishing where fuel consumption is one of the principal costs. The reclaimed energy can be used to haul in the nets or directly to power the propellers. Additional power is of course necessary, as the nets are usually full.” Ter Schure tells how his brother was introduced to the De Boer family of Spes Nova on a sales trip to the village of Urk. “That opened doors. Brilliant opportunity, as in fishing it’s all about trust.”

Wetec / Nidec

UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’ Journey to a sustainable future
“This ship will be a trendsetter” As chain partners, Wetec and Nidec are recognised as electro-technical firms with a rich nautical background. The companies, based respectively in Stellendam and Sliedrecht, are the permanent suppliers of main contractor Maaskant Shipyards and as such were quickly involved in this fishing industry’s showpiece. A request to contribute to the construction of the UK 105 was not a complete surprise. “We’ve acquired considerable experience in diesel-electric propulsion and total power management with previous projects,” explains Kees Koese, Wetec’s general manager. Sustainability is always key
Journey to a sustainable future UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’
in these projects. The Spes Nova will also be an extremely sustainable vessel, an excellent fit with the brand values the client Ekofish Group wishes to project. This is an exclusive form of diesel-electric propulsion with the power management system optimising the energy consumption. Wetec together with Nidec supplied the electrical installation as well as the propulsion.” Whilst at sea fishing, a battery pack stores the reclaimed power. “Work can be done onboard using this stored power. For example, if the ship is tied up for a week, or perhaps on a maintenance day repairs can now be carried out without using diesel. Result; a lot less fumes, CO2 and noise! I suppose you could say
that at such times the vessel is entirely self-supporting. Brilliant!” According to Koese, Wetec is used to thinking in tandem with clients. “Our experience, knowledge and creative thinking power are highly useful now that a wave of innovation is permeating the fishing industry. Together with other parties we’ve already converted 84 trawlers to pulse trawlers. We also maintain and repair these vessels. The technology has set in motion quite a few things. You could rightfully claim that the Netherlands is something of a trailblazer when it comes to fishing. And, of course confidence continues to rise in the
25
Netherlands, clearly indicated by the Ekofish Group’s approach and choices expressed in the Spes Nova. The De Boer family are completely behind this concept, which not only creates trust, but also spreads this confidence to all corners of the fishing industry. Ekofish can be sure of one thing, this vessel really will be a trendsetter.” An end to the new developments is still some way off, observes Koese. “Regarding pulse, things are still a bit unclear, but there are plenty of people hard at work thinking about alternatives, just in case these are needed. And here and there ideas are being sketched for new and different methods of catch selectivity.” Wetec, which started life as Elektro Westhoeve, is a real technical pioneer in the fishing industry. Koese, who joined the company as a mechanic in 1986, explains that the company has grown considerably and now employs 25 FTEs. The firm recently moved to new premises in Stellendam. Nidec in Sliedrecht supplies hardware components, electric engines, generators and frequency regulators. Sales Engineer Teun van Breugel is involved in the construction of the UK 105. “Nidec is a world leader in the production of electric engines, generators and regulators. As a component supplier we ensure that a working system is created on board, which thanks to smart choices among other things results in a clean, fault-free power supply. With all the sensitive equipment on board fishing vessels these days this is crucial.” Materials come from their own NIDEC production facilities. All propulsion-technical components, from energy generation to engines, frequency regulators and the battery power system are delivered from one source, which creates clear responsibility and guarantees short lines for any solution sought. “We have a worldwide network of engineers for aftercare and repairs. We can also ensure a rapid delivery of spare components and parts. For example, if a vessel experiences problems and is forced to tie up in a remote Scottish harbour, we can ensure the appropriate support arrives quickly.” Control Techniques and Leroy-Somer have been part of Nidec Japan since February 2017. Both players have been active in the market for decades. With over 110,000 employees across 300 companies and in 40 countries, Nidec offers innovative and pioneering products, services and industrial solutions.

World-class trawl monitoring system for new vessel
Scanmar technology to give Spes Nova ‘the edge’ over competitors A state-of-the-art vessel such as the new Spes Nova requires state-of-the-art technology and this is certainly the case with Ekofish Group’s new vessel when it comes to its trawl door and net monitoring systems.
The Norwegian-based market leader in trawl sensor equipment, Scanmar AS, were the first choice for the owner of this attractive new vessel as Scanmar are recognised throughout the international fishing industry as leaders in the area of door and net sensors to ensure that the trawling operation is working to its maximum potential. The choice of Scanmar has come at a time that the company is receiving worldwide acclaim for their recent launch of their new version of the bridge console of the ScanBas 365. A system which not only combines all of the data being fed back to the wheelhouse from the array of door, catch, flow and TrawlEye sensors, but do so in a manner which allows the skipper to customise his preferred optimal view of how he wants this information presented to him. With new long-life battery sensors fitted throughout the working trawl system, showing trawl door angle, pitch & roll, spread of the net, and the TrawlEye, flow and catch sensors. All combining to feed this data back to a single user-friendly console in the wheelhouse. This system enhances the quality and volume of information being provided, and in doing so, reduces the need for several separate console monitors. But it also means that highly technical data can be compressed into a clearer version that immediately reports any problems and allows for immediate steps to take to react and repair the issue. Most importantly for vessel owners, the huge volume of trawl monitoring data being provided means that there is no danger of fishing time being wasted due to an unknown twisting or ‘fouling’ of the net and therefore the ScanBas365 eliminates the frustrating possibility of time (and fuel) wasted towing when the net might be closed and not fishing properly.

Journey to a sustainable future UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’
Carpentry of the highest quality IJtama is a Stellendam-based marine carpenter which has its roots in joinery installation on fishing vessels. In addition to new construction, the renovation, reconstruction and repair of ships is also an important field of activity for IJtama. Manufacturing interior solutions on ships requires real craftsmanship. A ship is anything but straight and each solution is custom-built. Although the fisheries sector is IJtama’s main market, the company has acquired expertise in all branches of commercial shipping. During the construction of the Spes Nova, the company was involved in the installation of joinery of the quarters, working decks, the floors and the fish hold. The quality of the crew’s comfort and the ship’s entire insulation is unlike that of conventional fishing vessels. The polyurea coating of the working deck and fish hold is a sustainable solution which is flexible, odourless and waterproof. Over the past few years IJtama has experienced a strong increase in the number of requests from the fisheries sector. The company therefore is confident about the future. Still it is keeping a close eye on the market when it concerns matters such as pulse fishing and the Brexit. Ships like the Spes Nova are built in response to these factors and are important for the sector’s future. IJtama is not only active in fisheries but it traditionally is their speciality. What makes IJtama a unique marine carpenter is that it has its own workshop. Here it manufactures items into a ready-to-use product. Subsequently it only has to install this product on board the vessel. Moreover, experience has shown that IJtama delivers solid work. Ships on which the company performed work thirty years ago, are still in mint condition today.

Perfect in satelliet communicatie!
“We know what’s going on in the fishing industry!” “Can you do this too?” That was the question that launched De Boer Marine in 2009. De Boer Marine originated from De Boer Kantoorcentrum (De Boer Office Centre, DBKC) in the town of Urk. DBKC was traditionally a supplier of computers, printers, etc. to companies and private individuals, but started focusing specifically on communications on board of ships following demand from the fishing industry. De Boer Marine now specializes in navigation and communication equipment and serves over seventy percent of the fleet in the field of communications. De Boer Marine was one of the few companies in 2009 with expertise in both computers and communication. All the standard suppliers focused on navigation equipment and traditional communications. However, the demand for low-cost connections on ships grew rapidly and De Boer Marine responded well to that demand. The focus of De Boer Marine is on remote support of ships operating worldwide. The modular design of the installations enables efficient and cost-effective service in all parts of the world. De Boer Marine operates internationally and uses of dealers for this. De Boer Marine director, Meindert-Jan de Boer, talks about his company: “We not only supply the hardware, but also the subscriptions appropriate to the customer’s wishes. Our service makes all the difference. Our customers know this. We are well informed about the fishing industry and know what’s going on.” De Boer makes the difference by knowing the daily practice of fisherman; “We often board ships. We listen to demand and sometimes sail along. That way you can hear as well as see the needs of the customer!” De Boer Marine builds on the deployment and applicability of remote services and distinguishes itself through the ‘swap’ method that is applied. No expensive repairs on the spot, but rather exchanging systems and components. This allows De Boer Marine to serve large customers with a small team.
Journey to a sustainable future UK 105 ‘Spes Nova’ 33
Challenge According to De Boer, internet on board a fishing boat, offshore support vessel or cargo ship is a challenge. Communication takes place via satellite, which means that basic issues such as weather conditions always play a role. “It must also work in severe weather conditions, such as rain or heavy seas. It’s important for things to work in those circumstances as well. Our strength is not just the product, but the service we provide when we are needed.” Much of De Boer Marine’s work takes place on existing ships, where the owner chooses renewal of the bridge equipment. A new project like the construction of the “Spes Nova” is another challenge. “You start from the beginning, and are able to get truly creative with a ship like that. We make a drawing for the bridge layout with the correct setup of the equipment, the positions of the antennas, etc. We’re able to think about refining the onboard process. This allows us to operate relatively independent of brands. We only sell products that we can service ourselves; that’s ultimately our strength!” Developments At the moment, a new, promising development is the WASSP multibeam sonar (244 beams over 120° width): it is possible to map details of the seabed (for example wrecks and rocks), as well as the real-time detection of schools of fish around for example wrecks. Hardness and structure of the soil are also measured. Meindert-Jan de Boer: “By linking this data to a Maxsea TimeZero, for example, this can also be permanently saved and enables you to create a database of important fishing data.”
Underwater as well; when it comes to the rig and fishing net(s), there is continuous development of catch and net guard sensors, echo sounders and flow meters for the fishing fleet. Our solutions improve operational efficiency, reduce waste and increase catch quality. Of course, developments in communication are ongoing. We have now begun delivering heavier VSAT systems with greater bandwidths and more flexibility. All in line with the growing demand for good connections. But cost savings for the customer remains our focus: “With us, you do not pay per kilobyte, but rather a fixed amount per month. That way we can provide clear cost details, without any surprises.”

The future of ice production Recom Ice Systems is a leading international supplier of products and services related to ice machines, automatic ice storage, transport and weighing. The company is active worldwide in a variety of industries. However, the largest share of its activities pertains to the fishing industry. Over 80 percent of the company’s activities takes place in this industry. Recom Ice Systems manufactures machines for every branch of the fishing industry: for ships, ports, fish auctions and fish-processing companies. Different types of ice can be produced, including slurry, ice shelves and flake ice. The machines to be delivered by Recom Ice Systems to Ekofish have been developed to turn seawater into flake ice. Custom-made, integrated and installed Recom Ice Systems will equip the Spes Nova with two new-generation VF-30 ice machines, each with a capacity of three tonnes per day. These machines are plug-and-play and will be integrated in the design of the ship, making the best possible use of the space available on the ship. Whereas ice machines used to be susceptible to faults and required manual operation, these machines operate fully automatically with ice level sensors and protections. Investing in innovation Recom Ice Systems is noticing that the fishing industry is heavily investing in innovation again. This doesn’t just apply to ships, but to fish-processing companies and ports as well. Recom Ice Systems machines are designed in Europe and manufactured at the company’s own state-of-the-art production facility in the south-east of China. This makes Recom Ice Systems a complete supplier for ice machines and related equipment. Recom Internet Ice Plant Portal (RIIPP) RIIPP, a cloud-based internet platform, has been specially developed for ice plants that work together with fish auctions and ports. RIIPP shows the ice production inside the plant in realtime, carries out checks on the production process, and has extensive CRM functionality, including the invoicing of ice supplied to customers. RIIPP offers a complete and powerful integration of ice plant, PLC control and internet software.

Investeren in de toekomst
I
Investing in the future An involved financier is invaluable nowadays. The Ekofish Group is more than just a collection of ships, as the company also processes and supplies fish. The Rabobank helps connect these business units, not just through bank financing, but also by leasing and factoring. The new way of fishing Rabobank has become increasingly involved in the fishing sector in the last decade. This has to do with the challenges faced by the sector some years back, but also due to the rise of pulse fishery and the associated applications. Because the fishing sector currently has a stronger position, parties meet in a new capacity. You can see this vision at the types of fisheries Rabobank invests in. Traditional beam crawl is no longer fully facilitated, as this fishing method is the least profitable in case of economic downfall. Rabobank believes in the opportunities provided by flyshoot, twin-rig and pulse technologies thanks to elements such as fuel savings and reduced soil stir. These types of fishing are also eligible for the MSC label.
Rabobank believes in the future of fishing. It is a pure product which will become increasingly scarce due to the growing world population. Threats such as Brexit, wind farms and further regulation must be monitored closely, just like price developments. Innovative initiatives such as the Spes Nova ensure that these factors pose fewer problems than with traditional fishing vessels. Stronger together! Rabobank supports this slogan. The company acknowledges that the sector will face challenges and demands its customers to be realistic. Don’t just look at today, but make sure you have your affairs in order for the next year and the next decade!
