airi Macdonald, a Primary 7 student at Kingswells Primary School, recently had great success at the Scottish National Age Group Championships held in Aberdeen at the Aquatics Centre, in April this year.
n her first Scottish Nationals, Mairi won gold in the 100m Backstroke, which gives her the title of Scottish National Champion! She also won a silver medal in the 50m Backstroke, a gold medal in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay, and a bronze medal in the 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay. Mairi swims for the City of Aberdeen Swim Team (COAST), as well as Bucksburn Amateur Swimming Club. Mairi has a very busy summer ahead training for the Scottish National Open Championships, held in Glasgow the end of June, and the Scottish Summer Championships held in Edinburgh at the end of July.

Latest News Litter-pick On 18 April, a willing band of volunteers organised by Claire Burt helped to clear a huge amount of litter (65 sacks !) from around Kingswells. KCC is very grateful to all those who made the clean-up a success, including residents and their children, Councillor Steve Delaney, and personnel from Prime 4 and Sir Robert McAlpine construction. Thanks also to the Simpsons for carrying out a separate clean-up around Derbeth. Aberdeen City Council helped by providing all the necessary equipment and uplifting the rubbish. Numerous litter blackspots were tackled. Some litter had clearly been there for years and included a range of surprising items, including a computer keyboard, scooters, footballs, a tent, a mobile phone and even a shopping bag filled with cement ! However, the most common items were thousands of crisp bags and sweet wrappers, soft and alcoholic drinks cans and bottles. Broken bottles were a hazard in some places. The worst areas for litter were at the entrance to Kingswells on Kingswood Drive and round about the school playground and shops. Unfortunately, the litter problem is so widespread that several parts of Kingswells still need to be cleaned up. In the interim, we would urge everyone once again to help keep their surroundings litter-free. It should not be left to a minority of willing volunteers to keep our green areas clean and tidy. One helpful step would be to ensure that waste put out for collection in bins and recycling

containers can’t blow about in windy weather.
Crime prevention We are lucky in Kingswells to enjoy a low crime rate. However, the police would like to remind everyone to protect their property by locking doors, including cars, garages and sheds, at night. In a recent police survey of 300 homes in the Cults and Bieldside areas, some 10% of them had doors left unlocked between 10pm and 1am. Cars have been stolen in the Aberdeen area because car keys were clearly visible when thieves entered the property. Please don’t fall victim to this kind of crime.
Tree cutting and fly tipping Aberdeen City Council has been felling some trees in the woods between Kingswood Drive and Kingswood Crescent which are protected by a Tree Preservation Order. The trees in question were judged to be dangerous because of rot in the trunk or dead branches. Recently, there has also been some illegal tree cutting in this area. In one case, the “tree surgeon” claimed to be working for the Council when he wasn’t. In protected area like this, any tree cutting taking place without Council authorisation should be reported to the police. Bona fide Council employees normally wear high-vis jackets with a Council logo and will have a Council vehicle parked nearby. Unfortunately, some public spaces in Kingswells, including the woods mentioned

above, are being used to dump garden and building waste such as Leylandii branches and pieces of concrete. Like all fly tipping, this is illegal. The recycling centres at Hazlehead and Bankhead have very good facilities for disposing of this kind of domestic waste.
Damage to grass verges We have received several reports of vehicles churning up grass verges in various parts of Kingswells. This is often due to thoughtless parking when verges are soft after rain. In some cases, Council, BT and private contractor vehicles were responsible. In one case, grass was damaged when salt was spilled during the refilling of a Council grit bin. These incidents have been reported to our councillors. If a private contractor intends to gain access by crossing public land, then they notify the Council and certainly make good any mess once they have finished.
Broadband Many residents attended a meeting in the Community Centre on 8 April to air their views about access to fast broadband in Kingswells. The meeting was addressed by MSP Mark McDonald and a representative from Digital Scotland. It was annoying that no-one from BT, which was awarded the national contract for the rollout, was there to answer questions. Many residents were clearly frustrated by the lack of proper communication about the rollout as it affects Kingswells. This was especially the case for those living in parts of Kingswells with “exchange only” phone lines – ie. lines linked directly to the exchange in Westhill and not routed through a green street cabinet. The technology clearly exists to provide fast broadband to these homes but funding could be an issue. No real assurance was given that this would be provided before the current rollout period ends in 2017. By the end of the meeting, it was clear that www.gazettemagazines.com t : 01224 949085
little progress had been made in addressing people’s concerns. However, Mark McDonald is now following up residents’ questions by writing to the key players managing the rollout. KCC will keep you informed about any developments.
Wellness Centre One Healthcare Partners have applied to build a Wellness Centre on the Prime 4 business park. At this stage, we have no further information. An exhibition of the proposals is planned for this summer.
Playing field at Fairley Road Despite all the recent works, there is still a problem with draining the field. A stream of water, probably from a spring or broken field drain, is running across the western end of the field. We have alerted our councillors to this.
Travellers’ camp At the end of April, travellers set up a camp of vans and caravans on the closed-off road between the park-and-ride and the A944. A locked metal gate was forced to gain entry. After intervention by the Council, police and Prime 4, the travellers moved on. At the time of writing, one abandoned caravan remains on site.
Aberdeen Local Development Plan (ALDP) The new ALDP covers the period to 2020. Planners and Councillors have agreed the plan for final consultation. There is little in the plan that is new in terms of developments around Kingswells. However, one potentially contentious issue is the proposal by Prime 4 to extend its development into fields on the other side of West Woods of Hatton. These are the woods you can see from the Kingswells perimeter road at the far end of the consumption dyke. They are ancient woodland and a designated Local Nature Conservation Site. e : kingswells@gazettemagazines.com

The proposed development area also includes the historic Quaker burial ground. Given the sensitivity of the whole site, it is surprising that councillors have actually approved it. If the plans are finally approved by the Scottish Government, both the nature site and historic site will be effectively surrounded by development. If you wish to object to this or any other proposal in the ALDP, you must do so not later than 1 June. The Council will collate objections and submit key issues to the Scottish Government for a final decision. The ALDP will affect what it’s like to live in Kingswells in the coming years, including the impact on housing, employment and local traffic. AWPR news
Fastlink between Stonehaven and Cleanhill, near Maryculter. Over the next few months, these and other earthworks will become increasing visible to local communities. Aberdeen Roads Limited will be preparing for these earthworks by building temporary haulage roads for construction traffic throughout the project area. Crossings for plant will be constructed where these temporary haulage roads meet the local road network in order to provide controlled and safe crossing points. Some traffic management (ie. delays) may be required as construction work progresses. Traffic management is already underway at Milltimber Brae where the bypass will pass under the A93 (North Deeside Road). This is likely to last intermittently for 18 months. Efforts will be made to restrict works to offpeak times and weekends. Other safety measures are being put in place including protection of underground and overhead services, such as water pipes and power lines. These measures will enable construction traffic to travel through the site safely and reduce the number of construction vehicles using existing roads. Updates about the AWPR can be obtained on the Transport Scotland website.
Restrictions on the Kingswells perimeter road Temporary traffic lights have been installed to enable work to take place on the new entrance to Prime 4. The lights will operate at off-peak times. A 30 mph speed restriction has also been placed on the road because of these roadworks and other works further along the road to do with the Kingswells North junction of the AWPR. It is unknown at this point how long these restrictions will last but the Community Council is pressing for minimum disruption.
Work on the bypass is now starting in earnest. Earthworks have begun on the

News from Councillor Delaney... Community spirit is alive and well in Kingswells as was once again demonstrated at this year’s May Fair at the school. This annual event raises thousands of pounds for the school, adding so much more to the whole experience of education in Kingswells. I’m always impressed by the number of parents and teachers who help out on the day. The range of activities is always impressive and it’s great to see so many families coming along, with grandparents enjoying the fun too. This year I was on the skittles stall, which was probably a promotion from “splat the rat” last year. Before you ask, I wasn’t the rat! This year’s event raised £11,000 which was pleasantly surprising, given the difficulties so many Kingswells families are going through as a result of job losses in the oil industry. It reminds us all how vulnerable we are to the effects of national and global issues which are entirely outwith our control. Hopefully this latest downturn will be short lived. Picking up on a story which generated much feedback last month, the adaptations needed to allow the X17 to access the P&R have been delayed with the current anticipated start date being September or October 2015.
Although this proposal has widespread support, there are genuine concerns that the proposed changes may potentially offer easier access to the P&R site for the travelling community. This was highlighted a few weeks ago when travellers accessed a section of the site briefly. Needless to say, I have raised the community’s concerns with the Council. Another point from my last column related to the new development at Fairley Road. These issues seem to have settled down as a result of early intervention. The remaining concern relates to the temporary road surface. The good news is that a substantially larger section of the road is to be resurfaced upon completion of building works. Hopefully this will go some way towards recognising the inconvenience local residents have had to endure. The Fairley Road field saga rumbles on. I spent much of last year chasing up lack of progress as we waited months for topsoil to arrive, a bit longer for it to be levelled, then time ran out for the seeding to be done. It now transpires that last year’s drainage works did not fully address the problem. The latest update is that additional drainage works have now been successful, the field is drying out and re-
CHRISTIAN AID HOUSE-TO-HOUSE COLLECTION
On behalf of Christian Aid I wish to record my thanks to all those in the village who donated and who helped with this year’s collection. To those (of all ages!) who delivered the envelopes and also to the stalwart band of 25 collectors on whom for most of the week the sun shone! Unfortunately we could not cover the whole village but maybe next year!!?? A huge ‘thank you’ goes to the ‘counter’ and to Sandra at the Post Office. To the members of the Church who live outwith the village who donated, and to the youngsters of “Messy Church” who sold the hand made cards and delicious sweet-bites they made on 10 May and presented me with almost £40 – thank you! A total of 603 envelopes were collected or handed in and the sum of £3262.35 has been sent to Christian Aid. For the cheerful willingness of all – thank you once again. seeding of the area is imminent. Hopefully we’ll see no further delays and residents will get some use out of the field this summer. On a different topic, I’m pleased to report that the poor condition of Broaddykes Drive has finally been recognised by the Council. Regrettably this will not result in the resurfacing works which are desperately needed, but there is now a commitment to carry out major repairs at the two main junctions. It’s a step in the right direction, but the whole road needs resurfaced, a case I will continue to make. Flooding in Derbeth Grange and Derbeth Manor are ongoing concerns. In Derbeth Grange this resulted in sheet ice over the road and pavement several times during the winter. In Derbeth Manor water has been seeping from the pond into people’s gardens. Stewart Milne Group have recently instructed investigatory works on the drainage system, this being an issue I will chase up if need be. I started this column talking about community spirit and intend to close on the same note. I’m referring of course to the community litter pick on 18th April . This was an initiative launched online by Claire Burt of kingswells.com and it attracted perhaps about 20 volunteers, maybe more. It was a great day, nice weather and a
good opportunity to meet people and work together as a team. What really surprised me was the amount of rubbish pulled out of the undergrowth, some of which had clearly been there for years. Sadly, there wasn’t the time or the people to cover the whole village but what was done has really made a huge difference. There are plans to run further litter picks later in the year and hopefully even more people will get involved next time. It’s a real pity that we need clean up events such as these. Regardless, the choice is to put up with the mess or do something about it and sixty-five bags of rubbish tells its own tale. That’s about it for now. BucksburnAcademy news Rock Challenge 2015 Final rehearsals and preparations have been taking place for our entry “Toying with Temptation”. At the end of March over 80 pupils from across the school took part in the Aberdeen heat of Rock Challenge 2015. They presented their dance and drama piece “Toying with Temptation” to a sell out audience and returned with a number of special awards. Bucksburn Academy Supports ARCHIE.
Africa fundraising At the end of last term we were proud to be support the ARCHIE in Africa aid mission which is aiming to raise funds to build the first ever children’s surgical theatre in Uganda. S1 geography classes studied the differences between the developed and the developing world comparing the hospital facilities for children in Aberdeen and Uganda. The school raised money through a dress up for Uganda day with everyone encouraged to wear the red, black and yellow colours of the Ugandan flag.
Show Racism the Red Card Two pupils Ryan Broad and Nathan Stockdale were finalists of this year’s creative competition for Show Racism the Red Card for their brilliant iPad/game/artwork. They were invited to attend an awards ceremony at Hampden Park where they found out they had placed 3rd overall for the whole of Scotland. What an achievement!
Bucksburn Academy Careers Fair 2015 Each year members of the Parent Council organise our annual Careers Fair and this year’s event which took place at the end of February was the busiest yet. Over 40 exhibitors including employers, training providers, Further Education and Higher Education were on hand to provide advice, information and inspiration to all pupils at the school. This is an important event in supporting pupils make decisions for their learner journeys and also encourages them to think about all the opportunities that are available to them. Kingswells Primary news Solar Eclipse On the 20th March the whole school went out to the playground armed with pinhole cameras, colanders and eclipse viewers to wait with bated
from Generation Science with their fantastic bee workshop and our nursery children were visited by Zoolab where they got to handle lots of creatures. Catherine from Premier Oil introduced our P5 pupils to a fun hour of coding while P7 also learned more about technology from the University’s Digital Life workshop. Primary 7 made delicious smoothies on the Lidl health bus. We had some or our scientist parents talk to our assemblies about the real life applications of science skills. Our class teachers involved their classes in lots of hands on science investigations and there was a real buzz about science throughout the school. We are very grateful to all of our generous contributors and excited to have so many budding scientists at Kingswells.

It really was an incredible atmosphere and a fantastic experience for the pupils and staff. Science Week Kingswells School is now full of scientists! We had a very successful Science Week in March involving every class in school. P2, P4 and P5 loved the visit from Glasgow Science Centre with their Disgusting Digestion Show and Body Vision workshops. Wild Dolphin Conservation visited P1 to P3 giving them a chance to find out more about dolphin habitat and to influence policy on protecting whales and dolphins. Aberdeen City Ranger- Simon Whitworth helped deepen the understanding of trees with P4 to P7. Primary 4, 5 and 6 donned their hard hats and built a fantastic 15 meter bridge supported by Sub Sea 7. Our P7 pupils presented a fantastic Science Fair in the Community Centre, thank you to everyone who came along. The standard was very high and it was hard to choose two winners but we finally selected Mairi Macdonald and Jude Laing to go forward and represent our school at the Intertek Science Fair in June. Our P6 pupils have turned into fantastic science teachers. Through their Science Champions training they have led hands on investigations with our P1 pupils. Barbecued rack of ribs Pre-cooking ribs in a pan of simmering water before placing them on the barbecue will ensure meltingly tender meat every time. This method also saves space on the barbecue as the final cooking time with the sauce is much shorter. Serve with a spicy chunky tomato salsa, if liked. Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour 2-3 racks of pork ribs (see Tip) 6 tbsp tomato ketchup 3 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp sunflower oil 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed Place the ribs in a large pan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface of the water. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring

occasionally. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Leave to cool. Remove the racks from the pan and drain on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack liberally with some of the sauce. Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue for 10-15 minutes, turning and basting with any remaining sauce until the ribs are lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the ribs can be cooked under a medium preheated grill. TIP Most large supermarkets sell racks of ribs or ask your local butcher to prepare them for you. Single ribs will work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg in weight), just reduce the simmering time to about 25 minutes.

Lock it or Lose it You may recall that in March this year we made a further request for assistance to ensure that residents living in the Kingswells area took time to check their home and vehicle security and that this essential daily task remained high on everyone’s personal agenda in helping prevent opportunist crimes from occurring. I’m pleased to report that from the level of assistance we are provided with we can work jointly to ensure that crime figures in Kingswells continue to remain low and further ensure that this community remains a hostile area for potential offenders to target or operate in. Since the last Kingswells Community News publication there has been a low number of reported theft related incidents that Police Scotland have had to deal with which further indicates that home occupiers and vehicle owners are acting upon all previous crime prevention advice we have circulated. Unfortunately during the month of May there have been a number of crimes involving insecure garden sheds and
vehicles being targeted where the persons responsible have seized an opportunity to steal property from within.

Our Annual summer camp is where campers from age 7 up to age 77 join together for swimming, walking, sailing, picnicing, sight-seeing and of course singing! We end our camp by singing in one of the great Cathedrals. This year it will be Dunblane Cathedral, followed shortly after by Crathie Kirk. Kingswells Parish Church We have just celebrated Pentecost, a time when we celebrate the beginning of the Christian community and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Many people, even those within the church find the concept of the Holy Spirit strange and hard to grasp. The Holy Spirit is relational, drawing us into the love of God and sending us out to love other people. The Holy Spirit is the presence and work of the living God here and now in our individual lives, in the church, and in the world. The Holy Spirit gives to us all gifts and skills we can use and share to show the love of God to a world in need. It can also act as a radical wind of change upon our lives as it acts as a wind of change in Christ’s Church. It has the ability to challenge and renew our lives as it also has the power to challenge and renew the Church. We need to be prepared to be upset and disrupted and challenged, but what joy the Spirit can bring when we open ourselves to its power.

Puppy Purchase Buying a new puppy is an exciting time for everyone. However, it’s something that should be thought about thoroughly before going ahead, to save a lot of heartache and stress for both owner and dog. Most people have a particular breed in mind when they think about getting a dog. It’s a good idea to research different breeds to check that a particular breed would be suitable for your family and lifestyle. For example breeds such as border collies and spaniels tend to need a lot of exercise and stimulation, whereas greyhounds and lurchers can be quite happy and relaxed at home, as long as they have a couple of good walks daily. Certain breeds are not good for families with children or households with other pets. If you are looking for a pure breed, it is advisable to check the Kennel Club website for a list of reputable breeders. When buying a puppy from a breeder, you should ask to view the breeder’s premises and also to see the parents of the puppy. Be wary of anyone selling a pup who won’t allow you to see the puppy in its home environment. The internet is good for finding reputable breeders but there are also many people involved in farming puppies on an agricultural scale that try to sell puppies on-line. Make sure you know the background of your pup, and if in any doubt, then don’t agree to buy it. You may think that you are saving one puppy from a bad life, but in reality, buying from a puppy farmer is just keeping the trade going. Another option is to visit a rescue centre such as the Scottish SPCA. They have many great dogs in need of a loving home!

Aberdeen Fire Officer issues advice about dangers of cooking and alcohol A senior Aberdeen fire officer is urging city residents to take care in the kitchen and avoid cooking after consuming alcohol. Between January and December 2014 of the total number of accidental house fires that occurred in Aberdeen 76% started in the kitchen. Fire doesn’t only damage your property, but can put you, your family or loved ones at risk. We have noted accidental house fires in Aberdeen for January 2015 have increased compared to the same period last year and Station Manager Gordon Riddel says that many of these are cooking related and involve people who may be under the influence of alcohol. Station Manager Riddel said: “We are urging everyone to Join Scotland’s Fight Against Fire and this campaign is a reminder not to mix alcohol and cooking. The campaign also highlights the importance of having working smoke detection within your property “We have seen a number of incidents in Aberdeen where cooking and alcohol were contributory factors to house fires and it’s important that people are reminded about the dangers of not paying attention when cooking or after drinking alcohol.” He added: “It is very easy to be distracted while cooking. The doorbell can go, the phone might ring, children can distract us, or we might leave the room to do other chores while food is cooking. “Alcohol is also a common factor in many house fires and anyone who is under the influence is advised not to cook. We would urge any groups of people that meet such as church groups & adult support groups, especially where elderly or vulnerable people are involved to invite us along to speak about Fire Safety in the Home. “Smoke alarms give you that vital early warning should a fire start. We provide free home fire safety visits and fit smoke alarms where required. “We urge every household to have working smoke alarms and test them every week. silver. It was utterly magnificent. Fashions are forever changing however, and by the turn of the 18th century Louis XIV was urging a ‘graceful and airy’ style on his granddaughterin-law. After his death in 1715 the court moved to Paris, where a less ceremonial lifestyle developed, with smaller rooms and lighter furniture. Known as Rococo, it was frivolous and exuberant, all delicate curves and asymmetrical lines while, overall, homes were arranged to be comfortable rather than impressive, colours and patterns soft and feminine. The typical Rococo home featured elaborate plasterwork and carved, painted and gilded wooden panels, walls hung with imported silk or hand-painted wallpapers, all reflected in ornamental mirrors. Furniture often had a curving front and – most typically of all – cabriole legs. Also known as Louis Quinze style, Rococo was at its height in France in the 1740s. Within a decade or so, however, a move towards simplicity, combined with a revival of classical forms gave rise to another new look. In England, it was known

Making a pest of themselves By Pippa Greenwood
They might be small but aphids - widely known as greenfly and blackfly - are one of the most common and widespread garden pests, with more than five hundred different species found in the United Kingdom alone. Greenfly and blackfly vary in colour, from green or black to grey, yellow, pink, brown or khaki. The majority are about 2mm long
replaced elaborate decorations, while straight lines and symmetry took over from curves and arabesques. Key pieces included chairs with horseshoe-shaped backs and tapering, columnshaped legs, striped fabrics and wallpapers, and elaborate window treatments featuring swags and tails. Furniture was grouped sociably rather than placed around the edges of the room, and even featured comfortable, sprung-cushioned upholstery. Louis Seize style could be summed up by two words: expensive simplicity. But it was not to last. In 1793 Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were guillotined. Two years later, the French revolutionary government was established, the Directory, lending its name to the final phase of neo-classicism: Directoire style, sparse, simple and notable for its lack of ornamentation. It was the end of the Louis era, but these remarkable styles have influenced and inspired us ever since. Most damage is done throughout spring and summer but there are aphids feeding somewhere pretty well throughout the year. In sheltered parts of your garden or in greenhouses and conservatories, some can be found even during the cooler winter months. They can breed rapidly and this is often done asexually or without need of a male. For much of the year females are predominant and give birth to huge numbers of genetically identical offspring. The symptoms they cause include leaf yellowing or other brightly coloured discolouration,

The plant sap on which the aphids feed has an extremely high sugar content; in fact it is so sugary that the aphids cannot digest it all, so their excreta is very sticky and sugary. This is called ‘honeydew’ and you may have noticed it beneath aphid-infested plants. Because it is so sugary, honeydew attracts harmless but unattractive black ‘sooty moulds’. On roses there are several species of aphid which may attack, often forming dense colonies on shoot tips, new leaf growth and flower buds. These aphids are mostly green, pinkish or yellowish in colour and up to 3mm long. If vegetables are more your thing then you may see the black bean aphid as it forms dense colonies especially at the shoot tips and beneath the leaves of broad beans in the spring. If you pinch out the aphid-encrusted shoot tips on beans the problem is often solved. Another common one is the woolly aphid which attacks apple trees and is also often seen on ornamental Malus such as crab apples, pyracantha and cotoneaster. Colonies of the aphid covered with white, waxy, fluffy fibres develop on the bark, especially near pruning cuts on older stems, or on younger stems where they also cause swellings on the stem.
naturally occurring predators such as blue tits, ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings will all help. In some situations it is also worth introducing biological controls and these work especially well in an enclosed area such as a greenhouse or conservatory. Aphid predators such as the larva of the midge Aphidoletes and even ladybirds, can all be purchased, as can the tiny parasitic wasp Aphidius. Ladybirds (available from my website, www.pippagreenwood.com) are perfect for using on aphid outbreaks anywhere in the garden from pots and borders to hanging baskets and hedges. The great thing with these is that, once established they will start to breed and add to the natural ladybird population. There are a number of different chemicals (including organic or ‘green’ ones such as those based on fatty acids or plant oils) available for controlling aphid pests too, but not all are suitable for use on every plant, so check the label carefully before buying or using, and always follow the instructions carefully. Problem: Diabetes, hyperprolactinaemia (a rare pituitary gland disorder,) anaemia, thyroid disorders and other illnesses can lower libido, as can gynaecological problems such as fibroids and endometriosis, which can make sex painful. Cure: Don’t just accept or dismiss your loss of libido talk to your doctor. Medication Problem: Many medicines can potentially reduce libido, including contraceptives, chemotherapy, and some medications for high blood pressure, epilepsy, psychosis, depression and HIV. SSRIs such as Fluoxetine (Prozac) can make it difficult to achieve orgasm, while medicines such as Cimetidine, Finasteride and Cyproterone can lower testosterone levels. Cure: if your libido has decreased since beginning new medication, see your doctor, who may be able to prescribe an alternative. Fear of pregnancy

Saving for Children – What are the Best Options? By Ann Haldon
Children’s savings accounts provide a great way to build a nest egg for later life, perhaps for driving lessons or to fund a gap year, and are a good way to introduce the subject of money management. We look at three savings options below that could be ideal for your child. These are products that incorporate a range of features and benefits, including tax-free status, instant access, and longer savings terms. So let’s start with a product that was first introduced in 2011: Junior ISAs Junior ISAs are available to children under the age of 18 who don’t already have a Child Trust Fund. New legislation has recently been introduced to allow the transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund into a Junior ISA, however, and this change took effect from April 2015. The contribution limit for a Junior ISA is £4,080 for the 2015-16 tax year, and there are two types of account available: • •
Cash Junior ISA: offering tax-free interest and instant access Stocks and Shares Junior ISA: cash is invested in stocks and shares, with no tax paid on dividends or capital growth
Children are entitled to open one of each of these accounts, and although parents or guardians can open and manage them, the money belongs to the child. Withdrawals by children are not allowed until they turn 18, but they can manage

their own accounts when they reach 16 years of age. The Junior ISA will be in the child’s name, but parents and guardians opening the account are the ‘registered contacts’ as far as the bank or building society is concerned. NS&I Children’s Bonds These are tax-free investments that run for a 5-year term. They can be purchased by a parent, guardian, grandparent or great grandparent on behalf of a child, and each ‘issue’ has its own guaranteed rate of interest which is paid at the end of the term. The minimum investment amount for these Bonds is £25, with £3,000 being the maximum amount allowed per issue. Interest is calculated daily and added to the account each year, so that the child also benefits from compound interest. Children’s savings accounts These types of account can be opened with as little as £1, with most bank and building societies offering at least one savings account for children. In most cases money can be withdrawn with no notice. Once a child reaches the age of seven they may be able to manage the account themselves, which is a great way for them to learn how to deal with their money. There are two different types of children’s savings accounts, and you can open more than one:

Easy access: the interest rate will probably be lower with an easy or instant access account, but money can be withdrawn or deposited with no restrictions. These accounts are popular with children as many of them offer free gifts, including piggy banks and toys. • Regular savings: interest rates will be slightly higher for this type of account, but money is not accessible and you need to make regular monthly deposits into the account. If any payments are missed you may suffer a reduction of interest.

North East Open Studios (NEOS) is the largest open studio event in Scotland. Originally formed in 2003 by a group of artists based in Aberdeen City & Shire who sought to create an event which could offer audiences the opportunity to engage with artists directly from their own studio. Since then it has grown in numbers of participants and enjoys a huge amount of visitors every year. The dates this year are from 12th Sept – 21st Sept 2015 NEOS. It’s a fantastic opportunity to visit artists and makers of all creative disciplines in hundreds of venues dotted across the North East. From the artist studio at the bottom of the garden, to the collectives taking over the village hall there is a huge variety of work to see, there may even be an open studio event taking place in your street! It is a unique opportunity to meet the artist, see work in progress, learn about their processes and possibly even commission an
artwork yourself. To find out what is happening in your area you can pick up a FREE directory which features every single artist or maker taking part with full details of where to find them and when they are open. Each year 24,000 directories are distributed locally in galleries, shops and public places for people to pick up, you can also search for venues on the NEOS website too. Included in the directory is a guide map so you can plan your trip. It will help you plan your visit to several venues with your friends and family to an area of your choice. Why not make it a special day out and do a tour of an area in the North East and if you get lost don’t worry, just look out for the bright yellow NEOS signs placed outside each participating venue.
