Perseverance pays off for ACC graduate ELLINGTON — Local resident Melisa Luce’s story is one of inspiration, strength, and perseverance. An educational journey that began at Asnuntuck in 2009 has culminated in her recent graduation from the college. Luce’s first three years were focused on a degree in criminal justice. “In 2012, I was promoted to retail project manager. ... My territory was the whole United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. I was on a plane more than I wasn’t most weeks,” Luce said. After taking a break from her studies Luce switched major to general studies in 2015. Adapting to change was nothing new to Luce. “Being a high school dropout, due to becoming pregnant at the age of 15, I’ve had a lot of people tell me that I had ruined my life, and also thought my children would never have a chance in

life to become successful. I’m proud to have proved them all wrong,” Luce said. In 2005, Luce graduated from Connecticut Training Center as a patient care associate. That same drive continued her push to graduate from Asnuntuck. Luce has been able to share her experience at Asnuntuck with her daughter, Jessika Lin Gossett. They were both honored at the 2018 induction ceremony, as Phi Theta Kappa members. “That was an evening that I will never forget,” Luce said. She reflected on triumphs and tragedies she has experienced, noting with pride the success of her children, Ron, Jessika, and Tiffany. Luce has also experienced somber times, as her oldest son, Tommy, died in 2013 at age 28. Her husband Thomas has been “my greatest cheerleader.” Through it all Luce kept working

toward her educational goal, and it paid off as she joined fellow graduates May 26 at Dunkin Donuts Park for commencement. “My plans for the future are to continue to be the best example to my children and grandchildren,” she said. “I want them to stay tenacious and continue to reach for the stars. Don’t let anything or anybody tell them what their future will or should be like.”

Ellington resident Melisa Luce began her education at Asnuntuck Community College in 2009.

East Windsor First selectman’s corner

Town takes steps on former cinema property EAST WINDSOR — The Board of Selectmen has taken the first step towards using eminent domain on the property acquired by the Jason Bowsza M a s h a n t u c k e t Pequots and the Mohegans under the joint tribal venture of MMCT, previously designated to be an East Windsor-based casino. The property had been jointly acquired by the two tribal nations for development as a gaming facility, however passage of Public Act 21-23, which legalized online gambling and sports betting in Connecticut, also codified a deal negotiated between the Lamont Administration and the tribal nations that put a 10-year moratorium on the MMCT project. “We have tried to be reasonable with the tribal nations, meeting with them on several occasions to discuss how to develop the parcel. At the end of the

day, we are on the taxpayers’ side, and our job is to look out for the best interests of the gown and how it appears. After five years of good-faith discussions with MMCT, all that we have been left with is a very visible, blighted property,” said First Selectman Jason E. Bowsza. “While the town may have had mixed feelings about the notion of a casino in our community, the clear economic harm to East Windsor as a result of that property being left undeveloped for ten years is unacceptable.” “As a resident of East Windsor, I supported the endeavors of MMCT,” Deputy First Selectman Marie DeSousa added. “Now as an elected member of the Board of Selectmen I feel stronger than ever that this wrong needs to be corrected. The stalled development was not the outcome we were promised. Therefore, I have no choice but to pursue this avenue to bring jobs and development opportunities to this community.” “To have this parcel, which is in the

center of our business district, locked out from any development for 10 years is something we simply cannot allow to continue,” Selectman Alan Baker said. “Governor Lamont says he is looking out for the taxpayer and is an advocate for small businesses, but in East Windsor, we haven't seen that from him,” added Selectman Sarah Muska. “East Windsor is situated in a prime

location between Hartford, Springfield and Bradley International Airport,” said Selectman Charlie Nordell. “To have this prime real estate in East Windsor lay vacant and in such a blighted state is not acceptable.” The first step in the eminent domain process is establishment of a redevelopment district and selectmen unanimously took that step recently, with future action at Town Meeting expected.

East Windsor

‘Define success for yourself’ EAST WINDSOR — The following are excerpts from student speeches given by members of the graduation Class of 2022. Class President Sarah Blais: “In our AP Language and Composition course, the final book we read was ‘Outliers,’ by Malcom Gladwell. This book outlines how some of the richest people in the world became successful, and the circumstances that allowed them

to become accomplished. Gladwell explains the success of billionaires like Bill Gates, who spent thousands of hours perfecting his coding skill during the prime years of technological opportunity. He now has a net worth of around $125 billion. Bill Gates by societal expectations, is a very successful man. ... “I urge all of you to remember: It is up to you to define success for yourself and

your life. In our American culture, we often diminish ‘success’ to the financial factor, to how much money is made and spent, to the material possessions. But that is not all success is. Success may be found in everyday life, in completing the big things and the little tasks. Today the big victory is graduating high school, tomorrow maybe, the small victory is finally having the time to clean the Dunkin’ cups and Wendy’s bags out of your car. At the end of the day, as long as you've achieved both tasks, you have still been successful. “No matter where you end up, it is your job to define your own success. And I hope with your self-made definition, you believe that you are a confident and capable individual.” Valedictorian Rebecca Syme: “We took quite the journey through the past four years to prepare us. In 9th grade we had to reinvent ourselves for the chapter of high school. Then in 10th grade we stumbled a little, but eventually found our footing and got back up. Valedictorian Rebecca Syme (foreground) and Salutatorian Nicholas Canora. 11th grade reevaluated ourselves, as we Photo by Joshua Esan statted to become more mature. And these years finally built up to 12th grade, where we are staring head on into our next chapter, prepared to have to readjust Call for picking updates. to our new situation and find who we are again. We have a toolbox full of skills to deal with this new scary situation. In the past four years, the people here have made me who I am. Everyone here has had an impact on me and has helped me learn and grow. I would not be standPicked blueberries available ing here giving a graduation speech if it for sale at the stand weren’t for you all. Above, class President Sarah Blais addresses the crowd. Photo by Joshua Esan another pandemic, granted, if we do we are definitely prepared for that. But now it is time for our next big adventure!” Salutatorian Nicholas Canora: “Now, let us take a second to enjoy the last few moments of our time at East Windsor High School .... We have all lived through some of the most unstable times in recent history, during some of the most important times of our lives. Many of you have ambitious goals and aspirations, and whatever you choose to pursue, I hope you can all take to heart what it means to enjoy the moment. While goals may be vital to success, the process of getting there is a journey itself. So, focus on where you are right now. You will find success, as long as you put in consistent effort, enjoy the process, and love what you do. Success is a journey, not a destination, so let us celebrate our final stop on our passage into adulthood ....”

Awards, honors and visitors in town ELLINGTON — I recently attended the Gold Award Ceremony for Girl Scout Olivia Wright of Troop 10747. Olivia noted that there was a lack of Lori Spielman information about Unified Sports activities in the community; she located offerings in the area and created an informational brochure for students with disabilities to show them how they could get involved in activities. She was able to distribute the brochure to 3,200 families of students with disabilities. The Capitol Region Council of Governments, where I serve as second vice chair of the Executive Committee and Personnel and Finance Committee, recently held its annual Mmeeting. I got to catch up with Matt Hart, CRCOG’s executive director, and Erin Stewart, mayor of New Britain. These meetings and events are always a great opportunity to network and catch up with local leaders and stay on top of current best Olivia Wright receives her Gold Award.

Broadcaster Dennis House pays a visit. Photos courtesy First Selectman’s Office practices for municipalities. At a recent gathering at the Nellie McKnight Museum, many long-time Ellington farmers, including Adele Trueb, Ken Bahler, and Martin Spielman, came out to share their stories. Oakridge Dairy held a wonderful Touch-A-Tractor event June 25. This huge gathering, free to attend, allowed visitors to touch and sit on tractors and farm equipment. It was a great educational day of fun, and there was a wonderful turnout. Ellington Farmers Market, held each Saturday from May through October, has a fun new theme each week. June included the perpetual favorite Strawberry Festival and Artists Festival, and coming up in July will be the Patriotic Hat Parade, Bugs and Bees event, and the end of the month will see the ever-entertaining Cow Chip Bingo Fundraiser return to Oakridge Dairy on July 28. A huge thank you to Key Bank and all of the volunteers who came out for

Neighbors Make the Difference Day, where they repaired bridges, cleaned up and spread mulch at Windermere Trail. Dennis House of News 8 paid a visit, learning about new developments in town and checking out the beautiful bridge at The Barn Yard and Great Country Garages, which has become a great new landmark in town. At this year’s Memorial Day event through Ellington Center, our new Veterans Memorial area was a featured stop. This area by the Town Green includes benches and a beautiful statue, and was made possible by a grant that the town received. Congratulations to our Town Planner Lisa Houlihan, our land use boards/commissions, and our Economic Development Commission for the hard work put into this recognition. The Connecticut Economic Development Association awarded the town a silver level designation for economic development/land use planning. As always, check out the town website for information on events and other offerings.

Ellington Board names new director of athletics and wellness for schools

Top of the class Easha Patel, left, and Julia Wilson were the valedictorian and salutatorian for Ellington High School’s Class of 2022. Patel will be attending Northeastern University in the honors program with a major in data science and business administration. Wilson will be attending the University of Florida to study public relations.

Hours: Monday - Wednesday 4pm-10pm

ELLINGTON — At a meeting on June 15, 2022, the Ellington Board of Education appointed Anderson Rawlins as director of athletics and wellness. This administrative position will be responsible for leading the Ellington Public Schools’ athletic programs grades 7 through 12, physical education, health curriculum, and wellness activities grades K through 12. Rawlins holds a bachelor’s in psychology and master’s of elementary education from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. He completed his administrative degree in educational leadership at Southern Connecticut State University. Rawlins comes to Ellington from the Bethel public schools where he taught fifth grade at Johnson Elementary School, as well as serving as the assistant athletic director, freshman football coach, and varsity girls basketball coach at Bethel High School. Rawlins

also taught elementary school for Danbury public schools, and coached basketball for Ridgefield High School and AAU basketball. Rawlins was a three- Anderson sport athlete during high Rawlins school, participating in football, basketball, and track and earning All-State honors in track. He continued his athletic career in track for Sacred Heart University. An interview committee composed of parents, teachers, coaches, and administrators interviewed eight highly qualified candidates. Chair of the interview committee, Oliver Barton, said, “Anderson Rawlins is passionate about the value of athletics in the development of young people; his experience, talent, and vision resonated with all members of the Ellington community who were involved in the selection process.”

Enfield Rotary Club names Paul Harris Award honorees ENFIELD — The Rotary Club of Enfield honored incoming Rotary President Julie Cotnoir, Past Rotary President Cynthia Mangini, community members Connie Provencher, and Donald Tenerowicz on June 15 with the Paul Harris Award. The Paul Harris Fellows Recognition is given to individuals who meet the high professional and personal standards set forth by Paul Harris himself (founder in 1905 of Rotary International). The Rotary Club of Enfield has made a $1,000 donation in honor of each recipient to the Rotary International Foundation. Rotary established the recognition in 1957 to show appreciation for substantial contributions to what was then the foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships. Mother Teresa, Pearl Bailey, President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, astronaut James Lovell, U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and polio vaccine developer Jonas Salk are all Paul Harris recipients.

The Rotary Club of Enfield honored four people on June 15 with the Paul Harris Award. ‘This project is like The Little Engine That Could’ ENFIELD — State Reps. Carol Hall and Tom Arnone and state Sen. John Kissel joined Connecticut’s congressional delegation, state, and local elected officials recently to announce Enfield will receive funding to restore rail service in town. It has been 35 years since Enfield had a train station, but that wait will soon be over now that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded more than $13 million in federal grant funding for the upcoming project. The news comes after more than two decades of work by the town, council members, and Mary Lou Strom, who spearheaded the concept when she was mayor. “Today is a great example of how by working in a bipartisan fashion you can get things done for the community,” Hall said. “This dream of Mary Lou's has been on the front burner for over two decades and thanks to her efforts and the efforts of so many others who worked in various capacities, we are here today to announce it will finally come to fruition.” “This project is like The Little Engine That Could, and teamwork at all levels of government has made it a reality,” Kissel said. “This project just keeps chugging along, and it will be a gamechanger for Enfield and north-central Connecticut. Special thanks to our persistent local officials who never stopped believing: former mayors Mary Lou Strom, Scott Kaupin, and Mike Ludwick to name just a few. Collaboration, determination, and patience will pay long-term dividends for our region.” The project, behind Bigelow Commons, is expected to include a 500-foot platform, utility building and waiting area, State Sen. John Kissel and state Reps. Carol Hall and Tom Arnone stand next to a rendering showing the Enfield Train Station. and parking lot. Groundbreaking is expected in 2024.

Somers ‘The journey that this class has had is far from normal’ SOMERS — The following are excerpts from student speeches given by members of the graduation Class of 2022. Valedictorian Patrick Connors “(T)he journey that this class has had is far from normal. And yet despite that, despite everything that has happened, in our state, in our country, in our world, this graduating class from a tiny little town in Connecticut has produced All State athletes, All State musicians, successful entrepreneurs, even national champions. We have people in this class who in just four years, through some of the toughest times our society has ever faced, were able to accomplish more than many adults could claim in their

entire lifetimes. So I know for a fact that there is no generation better prepared to deal with the unexpected, to adapt, than this one. Because change is scary. But we have learned that change can be inevitable. And while we may not yet be trained to perform surgery or run a company, we are more than prepared to overcome all those unforeseen obstacles that life is keen on throwing at us. “Our futures are right around the corner now. When we step off this stage, it’ll be up to us what we do. Whether that’s college, the military, the workforce, we have places that we are planning on going. And I do think it is important to remember that plans can change. “But because of what this generation

has experienced, and how they have persevered, I know in my heart that there is not a group of people on this Earth that I expect would succeed in spite of that more than the people up on this stage with me tonight.” Salutatorian Sarah Cranna “I would like to remind you that whether you sailed to the finish line or fought hard for every step, whether you felt lifted by the encouragement of others or needed to be your own champion, You made it. You earned every minute of this ceremony and I hope that you are proud of all that you have accomplished. “I’m so excited to imagine what the future might bring for all of us. I know I will be cheering you all on and rooting for each of you as we all make our way in the world. “I wish only the best for each and every one of you and I truly hope you all see the limitless potential within yourselves to make the world, and your lives, the best they can be.”

Somers Splash Pad scheduled to open at Macie’s Place this month SOMERS — The grand opening of the Macie’s Place Splash Pad is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 8 at the Field Road Park. Somers.recdesk.com provides this information on the project: “For longtime Somers residents Wendy and Bill McCloskey, giving back to the community that has given them so much seems only natural. In December 2007, the couple lost their daughter Macie Grace to Trisomy13 when she was only six days old. Both Wendy and Bill recall feeling an overwhelming sense of community togetherness during this period, and this has had a lasting impact on the family. “‘Little by little, we just wanted to do something for the town because the town was just amazing when we went through this,’ Wendy said. Over a year ago, the McCloskey’s approached the Somers Recreation Department with a vision to bring a splash pad to Somers.

“A splash pad — also known as a spray park, aquatic play pad, or water playground — is a zero depth aquatic play area with various features that spray, flow, mist and jet water on active participants. According to Commercial Recreation Specialists, splash pads “combine sensations of different water movements,” while providing a fun water experience that “stimulates and challenges children of all ages and abilities.” According to the website, the designs for Macie’s Place Splash Pad “feature a pad shaped like a butterfly, signifying Macie and celebrating her life and the spirit of levity and play.” For more details on the grand opening of Macie’s Place Spash Pad, call Somers Recreation Department at 860-265-3840. For more information on Macie Grace and details regarding the foundation set up in her name, maciegracefoundation.org.

Suffield

‘We are powerful, we are strong, and we are ready’ SUFFIELD — The following are excerpts from student speeches given by members of the graduation Class of 2022. Valedictorian Emily Brydge “As we transition out of high school, we are handed down the graduation gift of a long list of social, political, and

Valedictorian Emily Brydge

environmental problems that need to be fixed with urgency, with a gift tag that reads ‘We have so much hope for your generation.’ We did not write this list, and we certainly did not ask for it to be lengthened as much as it has in the last four years. As individuals, chipping away at the list will involve each of us diving head first into the passion or subject that we've found or will find as we move forward. Our class has no lack of passion; in the last four years, we’ve seen it channeled into the creation of Walk to the Hart, Voices United, the Student Athlete Advisory Council, and many other initiatives that better the community around us. “However, making a difference in the world does not have to mean giving up the small activities, hobbies, and moments that bring us joy. We have the responsibility to make change, but we also have the ability to ensure that we have some fun along the way. In fact, staying grounded in these small moments will make us better

prepared for the gravity of the larger ones that will define the impact we choose to make as a generation. Salutatorian Sarah Whitehouse “(W)e, as a class, have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in this 21st century world. We learned resilience, for example, from the COVID-19 pandemic. Four years ago, no one would expect that 15 year-olds would be required to operate and learn in their rooms, behind a computer screen. Yet, we did it. We learned the importance of knowledge from our amazing teachers and diverse classes. From our student-led discussion in civics to our labs in chemistry, we expanded our minds to levels we had never reached before, discovering new interests and realizing the power we gain when we live a life committed to constantly learning new things. And from our clubs and sports, we learned the importance of passion and a dedication to others. After all, we’ve all experienced how hard it is

Salutatorian Sarah Whitehouse to attend meetings when we don't particularly care for the subject. “Resilient. Knowledgeable. Passionate. These are the traits of the Class of 2022, instilled in us by SHS over the last four years. We are powerful, we are strong, and we are ready.
