Garsington Opera returns for its third season at the stunning Wormsley Estate, with a typically eclectic mix of opera. In an extended season, director of Don Giovanni in 2012, Daniel Slater, turns his talents to Die Entführung aus dem Serail; Edward Dick marks his Garsington Opera directing debut with the British premiere of Maometto secondo; while Olivia Fuchs makes a welcome return to direct Hänsel und Gretel. The magnificent setting of our award-winning Opera Pavilion, nestled in the deer park of the Getty family estate, adds a sense of magic to the Garsington Opera experience. Just an hour from central London by car, but a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the city, Wormsley provides an oasis of calm in which to enjoy opera at its finest.

The music: One of the most compelling of Mozart’s operatic works, the shimmering music brings wit and poignancy, danger and intensity of shifting emotions, where affairs of the heart are notoriously unpredictable. The subtleties in both the plot and the music foreshadow Mozart’s later masterpiece, Così fan tutte.

The story: A young Spanish nobleman, Belmonte, rescues his beloved Konstanze, along with her friend Blonde and his servant Pedrillo, from the clutches of a wealthy business magnate, Selim, and his wicked henchman. Selim tries to persuade Konstanze to give him her heart, but he is to discover that love is the one thing money can not buy. The production: Director Daniel Slater is back with Garsington Opera, having brought a contemporary edge and fresh interpretation of great intensity to 2012’s production of Don Giovanni. The story: Negroponte is besieged by the Turks, and Anna, the daughter of a Venetian Governor, has fallen in love with a man she met in Corinth. He turns out to be an impostor and none other than Maometto, the leader of the Turks. The production: Two supreme interpreters of Rossini’s music lead the company; conductor David Parry and tenor Paul Nilon, with bass-baritone Darren Jeffery in the title role. This is the eagerly awaited British premiere of an opera described in the New York Times in July 2012 as “a Rossini masterwork ahead of its time”. The story: An operatic telling of this well-known tale, where children are lost and found reflecting their progress from immaturity to maturity. The production: Critically acclaimed Olivia Fuchs returns to Garsington Opera for a refreshing interpretation of this magical opera. Emerging international artists Claudia Huckle and Anna Devin are seen in the title roles joined by a cast of young and established British talent. The Opera Pavilion’s Champagne Bar is an ideal meeting place, with its stunning views across the deer park, while the Upper Terrace and Granary offer spectacular settings for picnicking. Performances begin around 5.45-6.35pm depending on the length of the opera, with a long dinner interval. During this time patrons can dine in the restaurant overlooking the famous cricket pitch or enjoy a catered picnic, or their own, by the lake or in one of our tents. Scout porters with trolleys and chauffeured golf buggies are available to help when needed. Performances restart as the evening light begins to fade and finish at approximately 10.15pm.

Trains from London Marylebone to High Wycombe take as little as 25 minutes and patrons can book seats on a transfer bus which meets one train before each performance. Accessibility
If you or your guests have restricted mobility or special requirements please inform us at the time of booking. We have a number of spaces that are accessible without stairs for wheelchair users or those with restricted mobility as well as a lift to the first level of the auditorium – with only a few steps required to the Front and Orchestra Stalls. There are also a limited number of parking spaces for the disabled, which are solely for the use of patrons with tickets for the wheelchair spaces. These must be pre-booked through the box office who will issue a bespoke parking permit.

Following on from the success of our live-link relay of La Périchole to Skegness beach in July 2012 as part of the Cultural Olympiad, we are planning a return visit in 2013.

Community Opera
insight talks
On July 19 and 20 2013, the Opera Pavilion will host a Community Opera written by Richard Stilgoe and composed by Orlando Gough.
As well as our usual pre-performance talks held at Wormsley, we are introducing three pre-season Insight Talks in 2013. Each speaker will offer historical context and musical insight on their respective operas.
The piece has been commissioned by Garsington Opera as part of our commitment to education and the community. The cast will comprise 150 children, young people and adults from the Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire area who will perform alongside professional singers and musicians. Tickets are just £10 each (£5 for children and full-time students). Please see our website for further details and booking information.
