2026 TRAPS State Awards

Garland received three awards at the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) state conference in Corpus Christi in February.

The Parks & Recreation Department received the Promotions and Marketing Excellence Award for its outstanding and unified marketing strategy. By bringing together Recreation, Parks Operations, Volunteer Garland and Public & Media Relations into one coordinated team, the department produced award-winning videos, trend-conscious social media content and consistent publications that dramatically increased awareness and participation. As a result, memberships more than doubled to 208,000, and social media engagement grew significantly. This award demonstrates how strategic communication can directly increase public participation, strengthen civic pride and expand the impact of parks and recreation services.

Volunteer Garland was honored with the TRAPS Voluntary Service Award for an Organization for its exceptional volunteer leadership and sustained service to the community. In 2024-25, the program engaged more than 1,200 volunteers who contributed 3,874 service hours across 45 projects, supporting park improvements, environmental stewardship, recreation programs and senior services. The award recognizes individuals or groups who make significant contributions to parks and recreation. Volunteer Garland exemplifies that mission by extending City capacity, strengthening partnerships and building a lasting culture of civic engagement.

Holford Recreation & Aquatic Center received the TRAPS Recreation Design Excellence Award, which honors outstanding achievement in the planning and design of innovative, community-focused recreation facilities across Texas. As part of the voter-approved 2019 Build Garland Bond Program, Holford Recreation & Aquatic Center was transformed from an aging facility into a modern, inclusive community hub. Guided by public input and the City’s master plans, and designed in partnership with Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects, the center features expanded recreation, fitness, aquatic and outdoor amenities that serve residents of all ages. The award recognizes Garland’s commitment to excellence in design, functionality and community impact.
