His passion for plants drovehis success.

“Selling the businessall those years ago wasaharddecision butashesaidhedid it for his children. Witnessing its decline over 20 years wasnot easy for him.Iampleased he lived to see his businessand gardens restored and his legacy continuing “Wewill arrange amemorialevent and create the John RavesncroftMemorial

Golden rules to trade by

Some 45 per cent of the annual turnoverofagardencentrewill happeninan11to12week period though thereare many constraints which may stop us achieving our full potentialthat is, what we candoonafine day in April Hereare some ideas which should help to limit the constraints and maximiseour potential

1.

Staffing

Recruit all temporarystaff in good timefor themtoreceiveadequatetraining before the startofthe season, i.e. at leastamonth beforethings get busy.Thisalsoallows time for afew leavers and/or non-starters These extrastaff must know where things areand be willing to helpwith liftingetc What theymust not trytodoistohand out advicefor which they arenot qualified. Trytoensurethat permanentstaff have had some holiday beforethe busyperiod gets under way.

Carefully plannedrotas shouldbe worked outinconjunction with previous recordstoensurethat thetimesofthe day which do most of theturnoverare fully coverede.g.morebusinessislikelyinthe 2 hours between 2and 4o’clockthanfrom 8to2 o’clock. Also, ensure that allstaff are easily identifiable.

2. Car Parking

Makesureyou haveenough trafficbollards, that the far reaches of thecar parkhave been tidied up and that thesignposting/ markings areclear enough to allow customers to departeasily as well as getin.

3. Pathways

All pathways outside need to be “2 families wide” with no dead ends. Theyshould be swept regularly, kept cleanand have as few puddles as possible!

4. Machinery/Equipment

Ensurethat all important pieces of machineryhavebeen fullyservicede.g dishwasher in thecafe, forklifts, standby generator,loudspeaker/PAsystemetc

Names of contacts and telephone numbers for service/maintenancecompanies should be checked and displayed where personnel can haveready access to theinformation. Sparetills areabsolutely vital. Trytohavea

few dry runs of avery busy day tocheck that allyour systems andprocedurescan cope.

5. Advertising

Advertising forthe Spring should have begun in themiddleofFebruarytolet theworld know youexist. Advertising closer to Easter is purely product-based in ordertocompete with themultiples

6. Signs

These shouldbeconsistentintypefaceand layout andare required at severaldifferent levels:-

(a)The “you arehere” destinationsigns (b)Directionalsigns forthe majorlayout

Once inside thepremises, signs which I would call“Welcome/Destinationsigns” areawaste of time. People have already realised wheretheyare, but needtoknow theoverall layoutofthe site.Inour case, leafletshelpwiththis.

(c)Promotional signsand labelsfor themajor plants whichwillbesold at anormalprice. (Thesemust be portrayed as desirableand something to be coveted)

(d)Promotionaloffer signs drawingattention to particular bargains -these must not dominate.Itwould be excusablefor them to

haveprominenceinJanuary/February but by thetime Spring arrives, people arecoming to buy readilyifevertheyare going to Discount/giveaway signsmay need to become prominent againinJulywhenturnovercan be as lowasone thirdofthe peak period, but do notdestroy theprofitability of your best periodbyover-using them in Spring

Scrawled, misspeltmessages on pieces of cardboardtendtoappear like mushrooms overnight if not controlled.

7. Supply of shop goods

Makecertain youknowthe response time of your main suppliers and keep in touchwith them, because somebody hastobefirstand somebody has to be last in the supply of anything

8. Plant Supplies

Reviewall stockwhich willbearrivingunder differentheadings:

Hardy nursery stock - trees, shrubs, conifers andclimbers

Impulse lines - 9 cm herbaceous, heathers, alpines

Bedding - frost-tolerantandfrost-tender The co-operation of suppliers is more likely if theyare receiving prompt payment; they too areunder great pressure at this timeofthe year Each planthas itsday andmustbeprominently featured when this occurs. If, however, as is usual with thesale of 70-80 per cent of plants, the remaindermust be givenasubsidiary position as soonastheirkey period is over, toallownew stocktobedisplayed andabove all be absolutely full of stockasitlooks moreimportant.

9. Customer care

Never, when under pressure, discussorallow your staff to discuss your problemswith customers. They areonly interested in their ownproblems, notyours, so it is no good saying“we arerushed off ourfeet” or “our suppliers have done this, that or the other”. They will notthank youfor doingso.

10.Enjoyment

Finally, try to ensurethatall visitors to your businessenjoy theirexperience -and that alsoincludes your suppliers and their representatives. Withouttheir co-operation, youwould nothaveabusiness.

Seizing opportunitiesto securestock

Along with its 54 garden centres, the Blue Diamondgroup now also runs sixnurseries. GTNtalks to Jim Teague about how they supply thecentres andhow thecompany is working to return itslargest site, Bridgemere Nursery, to its former glory.

Fromowning onenurseryin2018, Blue Diamond has, withinthe last twoyears, taken this number to six. Aresult of theUK’splaceinEurope, increasing costs, andopportunity from acquisitions, it strengthensBlue Diamonds control of plantstock feeding its55gardencentres (andcounting!).And it mirrors themoves of other retailers in theindustry, including BritishGarden Centres andSquires.

Overseeing production is Jim Teague whotells howBlue Diamond’sforay into nurseryownershipbegan in 2019 with the purchase of BridgemereGarden Centrein Cheshire.Itisthe largest footprintinthe Blue Diamondestate, covering110 acres, of which 56 acres is thenursery. “The nurserycame as partofthe deal.Blue Diamondnever intendedtobeagrower, but we sawitasanopportunity,” says Jim “Barnsfold Nusery wasone of our suppliers and itspurchase by Squires made us seethe opportunities of owning ourown nurseries, while becoming aware of theriskofnot owningthem.Atthe time we had37garden centres and even then realisedthereare very fewnurseries in thecountry that couldsupplythe volume we need,” he adds.

JimTeague with fivelitredigitalis almost readyfor dispatch.

The result meant becoming more dependent on stock grownoutside of the UK. “That coupled with covid, the fallout from Brexit andrising costs from transport, importationand plant health makesthe whole idea of growing your ownmuch moreviable. If for no other reason than securing your ownsupply chain,”explainsJim.

“Animportant point to make though, is that none of this is about exclusivity We still need other growers, which is the challenge and juggling act forour categorymanagers. But as we increase in size, weare finding we areeither taking everything from our othergrowers which doesn’t leaveenough fortheir own customers, or theycan’tsupplyenough. Identifying whatcrops theynever have enough of means we can get what we need and theycan continue to feed into their owncustomers. It’sabout trying to marryall of that together so it works for them and us.”

Nurseryacquisitions

In the summer of 2023,BlueDiamond struck adeal to takeonthe three remaining nurseriesbeing soldby Glendale Horticulture. Offenham Nursery, BadseyNursery, and Broome Nursery centred around the Vale of Evesham

Then, in February2024, came Worfield NurseryinShropshire, oncepartofthe Blakedownstable, and most recently, with the purchase of Barton Grange Garden Centre, Blue Diamond also took controlof Garden CentrePlants (GCP) in Lancashire

Along with Bridgemere, thisbrings the estatetosix nurseries covering in excess of 100 acres of growing spaceand

producingmorethan 11 millionplants

“Broome, Badsey andOffenhamare our seasonalnurseries becausetheygrowa big percentage of ourpack bedding, cyclamen herbsand veg. They only supplyBlue Diamondgardencentres,” explainsJim RunbyAndrew Bennett working closely with SueFever, theycurateand develop therange based exactly on what thegarden centresrequire. Other plant category managers also work together, and using Blue Diamond’ssophisticated sales metrics make predictions on futuresales of plant size, price, colour rangeetc to ensurethe right plant is on thebench at theperfect time

It’s takenJim andteam awhile to bring the WorfieldNurseryback into action, butit’snow apositivestory, withstock numbers andlines increasing.“Primarily, this nurserygrows alpines forthe group and we arebuilding therange significantly beyond succulentsand sedums,” explains Jimwho adds theyare alsoboostingvalue

with bespokeranges, terracotta pots and alpine arrangements in additiontosix packs andone litreplants.“Having our own nurseryallowsustodothis,” says Jim “I’vealways thought thenurserywas one of thebest growers of Sempervivum in thecountry so we'regetting it backonthe map,and theseasonalnurserieshavehuge potential to grow,” says Jim.

GardenCentrePlants (GCP) is the only nurserythatwillgrowfor other customers. “WewantGCP to maintain its, very good andloyal external customers, andthe intention is forittosupply Blue Diamond andgrowits independentmarketthrough investment.Initially therewereconcerns from theirindependent customers that beingtaken overbyBlue Diamondwould have adetrimental effect andwouldmean they get thesame plantsa Blue Diamond centres, but this is notthe case and we're already findingtheyare seeing benefits.”

Bringing the shine backtoBridgemere

Fromthe late1970’sonwards, BridgemereNurseries wasone of severalnurseries influencing theUK horticultural industry. Owned by thelate John Ravenscroft, it wasthe place to be for anyone wanting to experience thelatestin nurserystock productiontechniques. “It didn't matter what youlearned, but you always learned something. You always came away from Bridgemerericher forhaving spokentoJohn or spending time on the nursery,”recalls Jim.

By the time Blue Diamond came to Bridgemere, the nursery’sreputationfor quality and range had sadlyslipped. “When we walked intoanurseryitwas pretty full,” says Jim,“but it waspretty full of the wrongthings. Not only wasitoverranged, it wasalso overstocked. We had four times morestock than we needed " After covid changed everyone’splans, and Jim returned to Blue Diamond aftera spell at Boningale Nurseries, itwas time to turn the nurseryaround. With CEOAlan Roper,athree-year strategywas devised looking at howand whatwas grownfor the group.“Alan could see the nursery

The team at Bridgemere Nurseryare really proud of what they have achieved, can see the changes theyhave made and areexcited about the future. “Wewant to make Bridgemereanurseryofnote again,”says Jim.

represented opportunity but wasalso conscious it wasfailing. Isaw it as agreat opportunity to help the team put theshine back on the nurseryand put John’slegacy back in place,”saysJim

For18months, the nurserydidn’tbuy anything, existing plants were potted into larger containers, fed and pruned, and sadly some redundancies were madestripping the workforcetojust 17 full timers with back-up from seasonal and agency teams. Conversations later questionedthe future of the nursery, but thankfully, just in time, things turned acorner. “It's acliché, but it takes along time to turn around abig tanker,” saysJim

Chelsea gold

In May2024, Blue Diamond hadsuccess with agarden createdwith the National Trust on Main Avenue at the RHS Chelsea FlowerShow, and this wasimprovedupon thefollowing year with agold medal for its exhibit in theGreat Pavilion. This wasa defining moment forBridgemere Nursery

“Alan wasslightlysurprised when thedesigner said most of theplants for theexhibit hadcomefromBridgemere Nursery. He realisedwecould grow decent plants, but we were stillonly partway through thejourney,” says Jim.

This May, success wasrepeated again withanothergoldfor it's ImmersiveWalk Through Gardenexhibit dressedwith around 80%ofthe plants grownonBlue Diamond nurseries

Future strategy

Nowhaving implemented thefirst part of thenew strategy forBridgemereand with stock levels at amoreacceptable level, after18months ofnopurchases the first plants arrivedthisJanuary.A batch of picea arenow growingawaynicelyfor Christmas sales andthishas hadahugely positiveeffecton theteam.

With theretailCategory Managers, Jim is working outfutureproduction schedules. Forshrubs thepriority is to promoteexisting stockpottedinto10-litre

and15-litrepotsfor instantimpact, allowing customers to buy abigger, chunkierplant representing better value formoney.

“It's doingthe jobinthe garden forthem immediately,” says Jim.

Traditionalshrubs andgarden centre staples suchasphotinia, fatsiaand cordylines willcontinue to be grownat Bridgemereinthree andfive-litrepots, andthe perennial rangeisbeing honed to supplycentres with stock‘littleand often’ “Wewillfocus anddevelopthe rangesoit is exactly what thegarden centres need,” he says.

Newchapterfor Durstons

Durstons opens doors andexpands operations with new site.

Hot on theheels of an immensely busy season, DurstonGarden Products is preparing forone of the most significant developments in its recent history, as theSomerset-based growing media manufacturer steps into anew phase of growth with abrand-new siteinMearenear Glastonbury. The move will increase capacity, broaden the product offer and open the family businessuptoopportunitiesinnew market sectors.

The newfacility, known as Eclipse Works, spans 25 acres, including six acres of tarmac and 15 acres of operational space. Locatedaround four miles from Durstons’existingbase, the sitewas purchased in 2024 and is nowundergoing amajor transformation ahead of production moving over later this summer

Newmachinery, newcapabilities

Work has been underwaybehind the scenes for months, project managed by

Eclipse Worksisready to be kitted out with state-of-the-artmachinery.

Managing Director,Chris Durston. State-ofthe-artmachineryfromThe Netherlands is currently being installed, further enhancing Durston’sproduction strength. Existing

bagging lines will be relocated to Eclipse Works from Durstons’current site, with spaceintentionally reserved for additional expansion, as demand continues to grow

Thesignificantinvestment marks a step change in the company’sproduction capabilities and is setto unlock newpotential for theheritage Somerset brand. As well as supportinghighervolumesoftraditional bagged compost, thenew sitewill enable Durstons to introduce bulk bags, creating opportunities in newsectors, such as builders’ merchants and landscaping suppliers.

“The newsitegives us room to grow and the ability to diversify,” explains Sales Director, Dan Durston.“It will open newdoors for the businessand help us serve abroader customer base, while continuing to supportgarden centres efficiently andwith the high levelof servicetheyhavecome to expect from us.”

Acarefullyphasedmovewith no disruption to retailers

With Durstons reporting an extremely busy season so far, sending out thousands of bags of growing media dailytomeet demand, the company has timed thetransition to Meare carefully.Productionatthe current siteshuts down this summer, oncepeak demandhas eased, with operations moving entirely acrossto EclipseWorks ready to gear up fornext season.

The family businessexpectsEclipse Works to be fully operational by 1st September and reassures customers therewill be no disruption to serviceduring the transition.

All production staff willrelocateassoon as the newfacility is ready, whilst office staff will followgradually overthe next year or two.

“The relocation of our head office staff will be amoregradual process,”says Dan Durston, acknowledging the decades of accumulated archives and materials at the building Durstons has nowoccupied sincethe 1980s.

Anew chapter for Durstons

Oncethe move is complete, the oldDurstons sitewill haveanew life of itsown, possibly under newownership. ForDurstons, however, the focus is firmly on the future. The Eclipse Works site representsincreased capacity and strategicflexibility at atime when demand for reliable, UK produced growing media remains high.

Additionally, with transportcosts, lead times and productavailability acause for concernfor many retailers, Durstons’recent decision to holdprices, without passing on afuel surchargethis season, and maintain servicelevels, has offered garden centres reassurance their growing media supply is in safe hands. The company’s stock position, consistent leadtimes andrefusal to introduce surcharges underline Durstons’commitment

tosupporting retailers through what is shaping up to be one of the most intense trading periods of the year

“This is along-term investment in the futureofthe businessand demonstrates a commitment to ourcustomers,” Dan Durston

concludes. “EclipseWorks gives us thespace, the technology and the capability to keep growing and to keep supporting retailers in oursector for many years to come. We’re really excitedabout this next step and what the futureholds.”

Top three challenges tothe futureofUK Environmental Horticulture

Ameeting of environmental horticultureminds took place at RHS Wisleyrecently, andI wasinvited to representthe Environmental HorticultureGroup andthe retail sector, asitwas in dangerofbeing underrepresented.

The focus of the day…what arethe three greatest challengestothe futureof UK Environmental Horticulture? And what research can be undertaken to reduce/remove these challenges? Background to thisisthat the government has given amulti-millionpound package for research overthe nexttwo years. The full outcome of the meeting is yet to be shared butthese were my topthree….

1. Coping with the changingenvironment andmorespecifically theflood-to-drought situation we faceevery year withwater

2. PlantHealth –How do we get the population to understand the risksof ‘popping aplant in the suitcase?

3. Creating aworkforcebothlarge and skilledenough to ensure we candevelop, grow, plant and nurtureplants acrossall aspectsofenvironmental horticulture.

At the recent GLEE Roadshow twopanel sessions, made up of peopleinthe industry, talked of the wealth of careers in thesector.

At BBC Gardeners’World Live,Neil Gow waxedlyrically abouthow brightthe future is for anyone joining thesector.Inboth cases, preaching to theconverted…possibly? Thesolution –weneed to work harder at influencing students, guardians and second career searchers. Easily said, harder to deliver

BUT if we don’tstartnow we will run out of labour –none of us aregetting any younger!

The Young People in Horticulture(YPHA) is apowerhouse of under-35s buttheyneed more support from their employers. Allowing them to attend local school careerfairs would both develop their communicationskills and

confidencewhile engagingwithpotential employees. Don’texpect them to do this without pay–every pennycountsfor them.

Inspire the inquisitive

Many of us used to welcome14-year-old colleagues as weekendtilloperators, compost carriers and all-aroundgreat team members. Regulationsand minimumwage makethisa raritynowadays. Thebenefit, beyond their high energy levels, was theopportunity to introducethemtoour wonderful world. Howmany jumped in thecar afterwork and enthusedabout their day? Most!Impacton parents seeinga twinkleinthe eyeand asmile on the lips…. Priceless!

So if we can’temploythem, whatare youdoingtoopen theireyes? Areyou hosting businesstours for13and 14-yearolds, makingsureyou treat them forwhat they are… inquisitive young people. Inspire them, and theywillhead home withagrin and enthusiasmthatissuretoimpress theirfamily. And justpossibly, that family will recognise thereisapath(gardenor otherwise) to ahappy andlongcareer.Equip andempower your YPHA member to lead thebusinesstours, and thevisitinggroup will

instantly relatetothem.

As forpointsone andtwo,I have plenty of thoughtsonthose andrestassured Ishared them with DEFRAand APHAatthe meeting but they will have to wait untilnext time as I have aburning issue to share….

Manyleadingsectorretailers were invited to this meeting. Not onefound thetime to attend! This is thefirst time that millions have been secured to specifically support Environmental Horticulture; historically,we have been asideissue to thelargerfood andfarmingsector. If we don’tspeak, and speak loudly, now therewillbenosecond opportunity.

So hereisyour secondchance.Let me knowwhatyourtop threechallengesare to thefutureofUKEnvironmentalHorticulture andI will collateand ensure thebiggest issues aretabled. Say nothing… don’tcomplain about theoutcome!

Reconnect your website

John Stanley,Sid Raisch andDries Jansen consider the importance of agood online presence.

Think of your websitelikeyour front door.Ifit’shardtofind, hardtoopen, or doesn’tlook likeanyone lives there, people walk away. And today, most customers knock on your digital front door beforethey ever pull intoyour car park.

Most garden centrewebsites were built foracustomer who no longer exists. Today’s customer is a34-year-old woman on her phone Saturday morning, wondering what to do with ashady corner. You haveabout eight seconds to convinceher youhavethe answer.

1. Capturepermission for text/ SMS and email

Your social media followers arecamping out on someone else’splatform. Your email and text list is land youown. Offer something worthtrading for —aplant care guide, a plantingcalendar, orearly access to asale. Brands like Anthropologiebuiltentire loyalty engines by giving women areason to hand overtheir email on day one. Do the same.

2. Makeitmobile, or it’s still invisible

Morethan70% of retail webtrafficcomes from asmartphone. If your siteloads slowly or buries your storehours three clicks deep —she’salready gone. Test your siteonyour ownphone right now. If youhavetopinch and zoom to read it, so does she, butshe won’t.

3. Every page is alandingpage and everylandingpage should sell

4. AI Is nowa salesperson —make sure you’re on its list

Here’sthe newest reality: AI toolslike ChatGPT, Google’sAIsearch, andPerplexity arenow activelyrecommending products to shoppers. When someone asks: “What’sthe best deer-resistant plant for ashady garden?”

Your website content isnow your audition. Make it count.

GHealthy trading

GTNfindsout whyPlant Healthy is agood idea forretailers.

arden centres at allfive RHS Gardens (and thegardens themselves),havenow been awarded Plant Healthy Certification. Retail plantoutlets only makeupa small percentage of the morethan 110 horticultural businesses with the award, but their importanceinthe world of horticultureand thescheme cannot be underestimated.

“Retailers deal in such awiderange of speciesfrommultiple sourcesthattheyhave ahuge role to play in protecting plant health,” says Malcolm Catlin, Chief ExecutiveofPlant Healthy.

Representing Plant Healthy at theRHS Chelsea FlowerShow, Malcolmwas promoting itsbenefits to the nation’sgardeners. He is particularlykeenfor garden centresto consider howthe certificationcan benefit their business and thehealth of UK gardens andlandscapes. “It’sanareaweare so keen to promoteand gain uptake,”hesays

What and why

Plant Healthy came from thePlantHealth Alliance, created in 2018 andrepresenting the fullspectrumofthe horticulturalindustry.

Its remit is to minimise instances of damaging pests and diseases, whichare not only devastating but also costly.Research estimates ash diebackcould eventuallycost theUKjust shy of £15bn, with more thanhalf of that figureexpecting to occur in the 10 years from 2019 Phytophthora ramorumand oakprocessionarymothalone cost the UK an estimated £6.1 million to manage annually, and althoughthe UK hasyet to have aconfirmed case of Xyllela fastidiosa,it’seasy to appreciate the costs to retail andthe gardeningindustryif it wasfound. Its wide host range encompasses around 650speciesincludinggarden favourites lavender, rosemaryand olive.

Withplant resilience challengedby unpredictable weather, and an RHS report finding that only39% of thepublicare awareofthe term ‘biosecurity’, the charity Plant Healthy is on amissionto help the horticultural industrydoall it can to reduce threats and lead by example.

“Firstand foremost, we want everybody to be awareofthe real need forbiosecurity. There areseriousthreats to plant health, from plant

movement throughtrade and climatechange,” says Malcolm. “The firststepisfor everybody to be awareofthe problem. Thesecondstep is to get as many people as possible to act and adopt thegoodpracticethat will help prevent problems andwhere applicable, forpeople to demonstratethatthrough certification.

“It’sarigorous and ademonstrableway of showing your customers youunderstandthe issue andhavepractices in place,”Malcolmadds Full certification maynot be appropriate forevery business, andifso, thereare other steps retailers can take. Malcolm suggests they startbypreferring to use plantsuppliers with certification, andperhapsindue course, requiringit. If aretailer hasits ownnursery, it could lookatcertifying this element.

“For some retailers, PlantHealthy certification might be the best route,”says Malcolm.“If you areamodestsized garden centrechain, and your team hasgood plant knowledge, it’scompletely feasible. And youdon’t needtoget everysite

audited; youcan be included in the‘group scheme’.Anexternalauditor will makeanannual visit to asample of the siteswhich keepscosts and time manageable.”

Awareness, cost andtimeare obstacles to PlantHealthy certification, but Malcolm andhis team arethere to helpand provide theguidance to get started. Thescheme also offers 1-1support ande-learningopportunities with documentsand templates available

“In time, we hope to developsome incentives andare currently working on insurance schemessoifthere is anasty problem, businesses with certificationcould get some financialsupport. But above all thebenefits are protection foryourown business. It’speaceof mind and knowing youare doing theright thing It’salsoa wayofpromotingyourbusinessand giving your customers confidence by showing them you’ve gone the extra mile.”

Why SOLEX still matters

In2026,and 18 years after it began, SOLEX stillmatters. It has evolved from ‘aplace to buy product’ into the backbone gathering of the UK outdoor living community It delivers something the industry can’t get from emails, catalogues or video calls: concentrated time together in onehall, with the right people, looking at real product and having unfiltered conversations. In amarket shaped by shifting consumer behaviour, unpredictable seasons and tightening margins, relationships are still the most reliable riskmanagement tool we have Retailers want to know who is behind the brand, howtheyrespond when things go wrong, and whether theyare in it for the long term. Those judgements aremadefar moreaccurately acrossatable than across a screen. SOLEX provides that neutral ground where buyers and suppliers can explore opportunities, challenge eachother and build the trust that underpins serious commitments.

The personal touch

Outdoor living is tactile.Comfort, quality, finish and innovation simply cannot be assessedfromaline drawing or lifestyle shot. At SOLEX, buyers can sit in the furniture, check

mechanisms, compare finishes and view completerangessidebyside. That hands-on experience leads tomoreconfident buying, fewer surprises on delivery and, ultimately, happier customers

Crucially, much of the real value at SOLEX happens between the diaryappointments. It is thechanceencounter in an aisle thatunlocks

a new brand, the informal coffee that turns a good supplierintoa strategic partner, orthe conversation on astand that sparks anew categoryorcollaboration Business happens naturally when people feel able to talk honestly about stock, pricing, and therealityon the shop floor, away fromthetime pressureof the day job

For the trade, SOLEX has become a barometer as muchasa buying show. It is wherethe sector takesthe temperatureof theyearahead:comparing footfall, gauging confidence, andspotting which trends in materials, colours and formatsare genuinely gaining ground It is also where key industry themes – from sustainability and responsible sourcing to logistics and labour – are debated informally but candidly, giving retailers and suppliers aclearer sense of the road ahead. That iswhy, in2026, SOLEX ismore than adates andvenues listing in thediary. It is a pieceof industry infrastructure. By bringing the market together to talk, test and trade in person, it helps the sector move in step, react faster and plan with greater confidence In an increasingly digital world, that physical meeting point hasnever been morevaluable.

Getting ready forsummer

Well, that wasMay,the calendar cornerstone of our industry.

Twobank holidays andquickly warming weather shouldcollide to provide us with the perfect sales storm... but thisis the United Kingdom!

Who in their right mind would model a businessaround theweather in this country?

It’sagood job we areall gardeners at heart, which makesusthe eternal optimists. Just as the weather looks likeit’sturning acorner, we get another cold snap or heavyrain.

This year,May provided us with very mixed weather, but it wasprobably the most typical May we havehad forafew seasons. My retail clientshaveall reportedgood trade, but no recordsbroken.

Between the storms, we havehad some glorious weather, and naturereally took hold, advancing the seasonand turning gardens intoriots of colour and hives of activity. Our resident bluetit family all fledged successfully again this year, turning the garden intoa cacophony of noise and fluttering fluff balls for acouple of days, reminding us that the season is moving on.

Keep the staycationershappy

At the time of writing, weare nowcharging throughJune and Iamreminded of the comments from thelast twoyears that spring is stretching out well intothis month.

We used to say that as soon as Wimbledon started, the customersstayed at home, but this certainly has notbeen the case for the lasttwo or three years.

Retailers havepreviously seen strong sales

...sokeep your benches filled and get preparedfor the staycationers

of summer colour, especially in larger sizes, well intoJuly.Ifthe media is to be believed, ourconsumers will be staying at homethis summer, sokeep your benches filled and get prepared for the staycationers, the football fanatics and the sunseekers who’ll be looking to filltheirgardens with colour…maybe even abit of red, whiteand blue for the England and Scotland World Cupsupporters!

Plant delights

On the subject of plants, this year’s HTA National Plant Show(17-18June) wasthe biggestever; both halls at NAECStoneleigh were almost at capacity.Wehad 157 companies exhibiting across 267stands and 100 plants were entered in the prestigious NewPlant Awards.

This year’s Best in Show, aperennial antirrhinum, illustrates what the awards areall about. Representing real innovation, it elevates this traditional cottage garden annual by offering gardeners aperennial alternative. For retailers tooitbrings new opportunities to sell Antirrhinum ‘Shiryu Kiss’ (Shiryu is Japanese for ‘purple dragon’) on herbaceous perennial benches. On topof this, it wasbredbyPeter Moore, making it an all-round great British story.

Finally,Ihopeyou all managetosqueeze in abreak over the summer. Iwish youall a happyand relaxing time so youcan come back refreshed and ready for thenext rush.
