GARDEN OF THE GODS RESORT AND CLUB MEMBER NEWSLETTER

March Issue, 1971

Why things look different:

The Garden of the Gods Resort & Club is celebrating 75 years of excellence this year! The original member newsletter used to be called the Camel Chatter, so we are giving our members a blast from the past this year!

Message from John Reilly

Dear Members,

March is shaping up to be an exciting and energetic month at Garden of the Gods Resort and Club. The calendar is filled with opportunities to engage; whether you are joining us for the Member Mingle featuring a touch of 70s-inspired nostalgia, testing your knowledge at Trivia Night, enjoying Music Bingo at Wine Down Wednesday, or attending our exclusive Stag’s Leap Wine Dinner. From Mahjong lessons and mixers, to pickleball and tennis events, there is something designed for every interest and every generation.

As we look ahead to Easter weekend, we are especially excited to bring our community together for a full day of celebration on Saturday, April 4th. Our new Bunny Hop 5K will kick off the festivities, followed by an afternoon of family-friendly activities including a petting zoo, egg hunts, games, and treats at the Kissing Camels Clubhouse. Then, join us for a festive Easter Sunday Brunch Buffet at Grand View on Sunday, April 5th.

This season represents renewal and momentum. As the days grow longer and we prepare for a vibrant spring and summer ahead, I encourage you to take full advantage of all that March has to offer. Whether you join us for one event or many, your participation is what brings this community to life.

Thank you for being a part of this remarkable legacy, and we look forward to seeing you around the Club this March.

Sincerely,

"For a Luau at the Club, guests were told that they would receive a lei flown in from Hawaii. The staff was alerted - put the leis in the refrigerator as soon as they arrived. Unfortunately, the Lays potato chips arrived first, and were immediately refrigerated, with the Hawaiian leis were left out to wilt."

Memory from Lyda Hill

"In the early days when more formal attire was the order of the day, Mom would select her dress and then Dad would pick the color of dinner jacket to match it. One evening Mom had on a white dress with a pink sash. She came in with one shoe in white and one in pink and asked us teenagers which color she should wear. She forgot to change and we found ourselves at The Club mortified that Mom had on different shoes. Not to worry, she said, it would become a fashion. The next night two women had on different shoes."

Memory from Kelly Chapman Meyer

"June 10, 1978 was my sixteenth birthday, and we had planned a pool party, now that we were old enough to use the pool. Imagine my chagrin to find four inches of snow on the ground when I woke up that morning! The next event, I scheduled indoors, just to be safe. getting married December 31st, 1992 at the Club."

Memory from Bob Barlett

"Dave Stricker was a local lawyer and friend of Mr. Hill's at the start of the club. When he heard Al had purchased the mesa from Frank Dent, he told Al he may have made a mistake because it is so windy on the mesa. Al responded, "So what's a little wind to a Texan?"

Memory from Jane Norris

"The Club attracted colorful characters

"I met Al Hill shortly after the end of WWII. Inhabiting the same office building, we would occasionally see each other in the lobby or elevators. Over time we began to exchange "Howdys." One day he was carrying a folder and he asked if I'd like to see some pictures. "Sure," I said, thinking maybe Betty Grable. He displayed a folio of picture of the Mesa with the Kissing Camels in the background. Also, there were sketches of trees, a golf course, and lodges. He told me of this marvelous plans to preserve this unique American heritage. I could neither comprehend nor envisage it then. Half a century later, I've not only interpreted his dream, I've lived in it. During those years, my comment to friends was that the only man I ever knew who looked like a millionaire, talked like a millionaire, dressed like and millionaire

In honor of the Hill Family's time capsule they planted back in 1950, we will be putting together our own time capsule filled with significant artifacts, stories, and photographs honoring the past 75 years.

What was in the original time capsule?

It was a snapshot of the times containing a piece of bubble gum, a bottle of Dr. Pepper, a Coke, a Hopalong Cassidy comic book, a plat of the survey for the development, current magazines and newspapers, brochures and curios commemorating Seven Falls, Jacoby's book on Canasta, and "other items," which according to newspaper accounts, included an unlucky chameleon that scurried into the capsule a moment before it was sealed.

The session unfolds as a steady, meditative flow designed to build warmth, clarity, and resilience. Open to all levels , as yoga practice options and rest are encouraged throughout so each participant can move at their own pace. This seasonal practice offers a powerful way to awaken the body, reset your energy, and welcome the season ahead. Join us for a grounding and energizing flow as we mark the transition into spring — we hope to see you there!

Why Mobility Matters More Than You Think

Many people focus on strength and cardio, but mobility is often the missing piece of longterm fitness, especially as we age. Mobility is your ability to move your joints freely and safely. Without it, the body compensates. Tight hips affect the back. Stiff shoulders affect the neck. Limited ankle movement affects balance. Here’s what regular mobility work can do:

REDUCE ACHES AND PAINS

Gentle daily movement helps lubricate joints and reduce stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting.

IMPROVE BALANCE AND PREVENT FALLS

Ankle, hip, and core mobility are key components of stability and reaction time.

MAKE EXERCISE SAFER AND MORE EFFECTIVE

When joints move correctly, muscles activate properly, reducing injury risk.

SUPPORT AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE

Gardening, traveling, walking trails, lifting grandchildren, and recreational sports all become easier when your body moves well.

You don’t need long sessions. Even short, regular movement sessions significantly improve flexibility, posture, and comfort within a few weeks. Pair your movement with proper hydration and balanced nutrition to support joint and muscle health.

FITNESS CHALLENGE:

Three Movement Levels

Winter often leaves us with stiff joints, tight muscles, and decreased balance. This month we’re rebuilding movement the right way, by progressing step-by-step. Instead of counting workouts, you’ll work your way through three movement levels during March. Track your progress on the Fitness Challenge Board in the Fitness Center.

LEVEL 1: RESTORE (5 COMPLETIONS) - select from below

• 10 minutes stretching or mobility

• Attend a yoga or stretch class

• 15-minute walk

• Balance exercises (5 minutes)

LEVEL 2: BUILD (8 COMPLETIONS) - select from below

• 20-minute walk or cardio

• Strength training session

• Core workout (10 minutes)

• Water exercise class

• Foam rolling or recovery session (10 minutes)

LEVEL 3: THRIVE (10 COMPLETIONS) - select from below

• 30-minute workout

• Group fitness class

• Interval cardio session

• Two workouts in one day (ex: class + walk)

• Try a new class or piece of equipment

HOW IT WORKS:

Complete Level 1 to unlock Level 2. Complete Level 2 to unlock Level 3. Finish all three levels and you’ve completed the challenge!

This challenge helps:

• Improve joint mobility

• Increase strength safely

• Improve balance and stability

• Prepare your body for spring activities like walking, golf, pickleball, gardening, and travel

Participate at your own pace — whether your goal is restoring movement or pushing yourself to the top level. Additionally, all members who complete the challenge will be entered to win a prize. Congratulations to our January Fitness Challenge Winner Kay Frier!!

RENEW, REBLANACE, REAWAKEN

As the days grow longer and signs of spring begin to appear, March invites us to reset. The Spring Equinox represents balance — equal parts day and night — and it’s also a reminder that our bodies need balance too: strength and mobility, activity and recovery. March is also National Nutrition Month , a nationwide initiative encouraging healthy habits that support lifelong wellness. This month we’ll focus on movement that helps you feel better in your body, improve flexibility, and prepare for a more active spring season.
