MEMORIES ON THE MESA

Did You Know?

Ken Card was the original Kissing Camels Club Manager

Al Hill determined that the clubhouse should be oriented thirty-seven degrees south of due west to capitalize on the view and minimize the annoyance from the sun

After its opening in June 1951, the Garden of the Gods Club attracted the wealthy, famous, powerful, and socially connected elite from across the country.

Tennis tournaments in the 1960s started with cocktail hour at Al and Margaret Hill's home

The Gazette Telegraph

Any word short of fabulous would not be adequate in describing the lushness and completeness of this club.

Memory from Steve Durham

Al came to breakfast one morning and 30 minutes later came out carrying his pancakes. He said "I am going home to feed these to the dog." The quality of the pancakes improved immediately!

Memory from Jane Norris

The Club attracted colorful characters and celebrities, which made for good stories! I especially remember one about John Wayne. One night, Jerry Brown, our accomplished bandleader, got “into it” with the Duke. “I never liked anything you did,” said Jerry, “but my mother thinks you’re the best ever.” “Well, let’s call her up!” Said John Wayne, and they did, talking for 20 minutes with Jerry’s mom. (At 3:00 a.m.!!)

Tips from the Pros

As golfers, a small amount of our time and attention can go a long way in helping to maintain high-quality playing conditions on the courses we play. Repairing ball marks on the putting greens is an easy way to make a positive impact, but the importance of ball mark repair and the proper tools and technique are often misunderstood. Here are five things every golfer should know about repairing ball marks:

1. The proper technique for ball mark repair is easy and fast.

Insert the ball mark repair tool behind the ball mark and gently push the top of the tool toward the center. Continue working around the ball mark, pushing the surrounding turf in toward the center of the indentation. Avoid using a lifting or twisting motion because this can damage turf roots. Once you have finished pushing turf in toward the center, gently tamp the area down with your putter to create a smooth, firm surface.

2. Unrepaired ball marks cause lasting problems

Failing to repair a ball mark may seem like a minor oversight, but there are lasting consequences. Unrepaired ball marks can take weeks to heal, during which time they can cause balls to bounce off line. The damage to the putting surface is also an entry point for weeds that can cause serious problems.

JUNE FITNESS

Strong, Safe, and Summer Ready

WHY BALANCED TRAINING KEEPS YOU ACTIVE, AND INJURY-FREE

When people think about fitness, they often focus on one area, more cardio, more strength, or simply doing more activity overall. The key to staying active long-term isn’t doing more of one thing, it’s creating the right balance of movement. A well-rounded fitness routine helps improve performance, reduce injury risk, and keep your body feeling strong and capable throughout the summer season. We encourage members to think about fitness in three key categories:

1. STRENGTH TRAINING: YOUR FOUNDATION

Strength training supports muscle mass, bone density, balance, and joint stability. It also makes everyday activities like carrying groceries, climbing stairs, golfing, tennis, or traveling feel easier and safer.

2. CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE: YOUR ENGINE

Cardio improves heart health, endurance, circulation, and energy levels. Walking, cycling, swimming, and cardio equipment are all great options, but many members find that group fitness classes provide structure, accountability, and a fun social environment. When your workouts are more enjoyable, it's easier to maintain consistently.

3. MOBILITY & RECOVERY: YOUR LONGEVITY TOOL

Mobility work helps your joints move properly, improves flexibility, and reduces stiffness that can build up from daily activity or exercise. Recovery practices like stretching, yoga, and foam rolling allow your body to repair and adapt. Mobility and recovery classes are especially valuable during the summer months, when increased activity levels can place additional stress on the body.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT IN SUMMER

As activity increases during summer, so does the potential for overuse injuries and fatigue. Doing too much of one type of exercise, especially without proper preparation or recovery, can lead to soreness, strain, or setbacks that interrupt your routine.

A balanced approach helps you to move more comfortably, improves strength and endurance, reduces risk of injury, recover faster and stay consistent with your routine.

A SIMPLE WAY TO APPLY THIS

Think of your week as a mix. 2–3 strength sessions, 2–3 cardio sessions and daily light mobility or recovery work. The good news is you don’t have to figure it all out on your own! Between personal training services, group fitness classes, and recovery-focused offerings, there are many ways to build a routine that supports your goals while keeping fitness enjoyable and sustainable.

Reminder:

As a reminder, all members are required to scan in at the Fitness Center front desk upon arrival. This helps us maintain accurate facility usage, support member safety, and ensures a smooth experience for everyone.

Members bringing guests are also required to check in their guests at the front desk before using the Fitness Center, attending group fitness classes, or accessing the hot tub area. We appreciate your cooperation and thank you for helping us maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for all members and guests.

Update:

• We'll be extending Fitness Lobby, Movement Studio, Spin Room and Pilates Studio operating hours to 10PM, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Our new peak season operating hours are 5:30AM – 10:00PM
