Why things look different:
The Garden of the Gods Resort & Club is celebrating 75 years of excellence this year! The original member newsletter used to be called the Camel Chatter, so we are giving our members a blast from the past this year, and embracing everything 1950's. January Issue, 1951

Message from John Reilly
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Dear Members,
This year marks a truly special milestone for the Garden of the Gods Resort and Club as we celebrate our 75th Anniversary. Since opening our doors in 1951, this remarkable place has stood as a gathering point for connection, tradition, and a life well lived - set against one of the most inspiring landscapes in the world.
From Al and Margaret Hill’s original vision to create a refined retreat in harmony with its natural surroundings, to the generations of members who have shaped its culture and character, our history is rich with stories worth honoring. What began as an exclusive private club has evolved into an inclusive destination - yet our commitment to excellence, stewardship, and meaningful experiences has never wavered.
At the heart of these 75 years are you, our members. You are the custodians of our traditions, the storytellers of our legacy, and the reason this Club continues to thrive. Your friendships, milestones, celebrations, and quiet moments here are what give Garden of the Gods Resort and Club its enduring soul.
Throughout this anniversary year, we invite you to celebrate alongside us; not only by looking back, but by sharing. We would love to hear your memories, see your photographs, and learn the stories that make this place meaningful to you. Whether your connection spans decades or just a few years, your experiences are an essential part of our ongoing story.
As we honor the past and look confidently toward the future, thank you for being part of this extraordinary community. I look forward to celebrating with you all year long and to hearing the memories that make our history come alive.
Sincerely,
John Reilly Managing Director
1951
THE BEGINNING OF AN ERA
The view has always been magnificent, a powerful place, magnetic in its charms, unspoiled, utterly peaceful, and surrounded by awe-inspiring natural splendor. Al Hill and his wife, Margaret, dreamed of sharing that view with others by creating what is now the nationally renowned Garden of the Gods Resort and Club. The Hills purchased the property in 1949, and shortly thereafter, built a private club, luxury resort, and residential community that showcased elegance in an unparalleled natural setting.

Building a Legacy

The beginning
Following the official opening of Garden of the Gods Club in 1951, Hill’s continued vision was grand and ambitious: to create the ultimate escape where an elite, exclusive membership could find refuge and respite, and enjoy the finer things in life.

Merging the rugged beauty of the landscape with the refined ambiance of a world-class luxury resort, Garden of the Gods Club attracted fascinating people of means and influence: movie stars, titans of industry, politicians, artists, authors, and musicians. All of them drawn to its undeniable allure and discerning community of like-minded members.
In the ensuing decades, the Club’s unique culture and traditions were proudly passed from one generation to the next, shaping a timeless legacy that celebrates life well-lived.

A Travel Destination
As we write the next chapter our Garden of the Gods history and in the legacy of this spectacular and singularly special place, we do so in a spirit of stewardship — balancing a vaunted respect for the past with an equally ambitious view of the future. Today, we are no longer an exclusive club but rather an inclusive destination of discovery.
Inspired by a Legendary Place
The Power of Place
When club founder Al Hill first looked out across the mesa — with the lucent rays of late-day sun bathing the landscape in a golden glow — he knew he’d found his paradise.

Dedication to Excellence
Our team members are committed to taking incredible experiences and making them even more seamless. Our service hearts beat strongly as every person who comes through our doors is welcomed warmly.

The red rock sandstone formations set against Pikes Peak, now called Garden of the Gods, have long been revered for their natural beauty. Centuries ago, it served as a Native American crossroads where numerous nomadic tribes gathered in peace. According to local stories, the immense sandstone formations were considered sacred ground, and because of this, rival tribes laid down their weapons when entering the Garden of the Gods.

Enriching by Nature
We believe our purpose is to create incredible memories that will stay with you, our guests, and our members for a lifetime. It comes from our belief that life is richer when we truly connect with the people and the world around us — Enriching Lives by

Enjoyed for Generations
Throughout the decades, the Club’s unique culture and traditions were proudly passed from one generation to the

Course Update: Walking-Only Play Beginning January 2nd
Dear Golf Members,
After careful consideration and consultation between our Golf Maintenance Team and Golf Professional staff, we have made the decision to implement walking-only play effective immediately and indefinitely starting Friday January 2, 2026.
This decision is being made in the best interest of the golf course, specifically to protect turf health during the dry course conditions we are currently facing. Reducing cart traffic during periods of stress is one of the most effective ways to prevent turf damage, compaction, and long-term decline in playing conditions. Walking-only play allows us to preserve the quality, consistency, and playability of the course for the benefit of all members.
This is not a decision we take lightly, and we sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the long-term health of the golf course. Thank you for your continued support and loyalty to Kissing Camels Golf Club. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as they become available.
Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy New Year!
Sincerely,
Rich Parker, PGA, Director of Golf

Frost Delays: 5 Things Every Golfer Should Know
1. Crunchy grass is vulnerable to damage. Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle and vulnerable to damage. Walking or driving over frost-covered grass may rupture plant cells, leading to dead turf. Or the plants may be weakened without immediately showing the effects. It can take grass more than a month to recover from this damage.
2. When it comes to frost delays, location is everything. Many of us have looked out our windows at home and seen no signs of frost, only to find a frost delay when we reach the golf course. This is because frost can linger in colder microclimates long after other areas have thawed. North-facing slopes, low-lying areas and areas sheltered from the wind are especially likely to remain covered with frost. If you are worried about a potential frost delay it is best to call the golf shop to check on conditions at the course before leaving home.
3. Closely mown turf is at high risk. Frost damage can occur on any part of the golf course, but it poses the greatest risk to closely mown turf. Putting greens are particularly vulnerable because they experience the most concentrated traffic. A foursome typically takes 300 steps or more on each putting green; if there is frost present, all those steps could cause serious damage.
4. A little frost can cause big delays. No signs of frost on the first tee? That doesn’t mean you will get the “all clear” sign. If frost remains in areas that are unavoidable early in the round, the course must remain closed. It is also important to remember that once the frost is totally clear, the maintenance staff will need time to catch up on course preparations before play can begin.
5. More light goes a long way. Shade extends frost delays by preventing sunlight from melting the frost. Pruning or removing trees that shade primary playing surfaces can improve the course’s overall health and reduce the duration of frost delays. This is especially true on holes played early in the round. The shade from a few trees can keep an entire course closed.
Inactive Score Posting Season:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
As cooler fall weather establishes itself across much of the country, golfers in some states will find their golf season move from “active” to “inactive” as it pertains to their Handicap Index®. What does that mean, what’s the purpose and what if you play a round in a state that is active but reside in a state that isn’t? The USGA Handicapping Department covers your questions below.
What is the inactive season?
Simply put, the inactive season is the period on the calendar during which any round you play in your home state or region does not count toward your Handicap Index.
But my course is still open during the inactive season, why doesn’t my score count?
The inactive season exists to address how seasonal weather can impact the conditions of a golf course. When an Allied Golf Association (AGA) issues a Course Rating™ and Slope Rating™ for each set of tees at a golf course, both are based on effective playing length and difficulty under “normal” conditions. In many parts of the country, there are certain months when facilities remain open but are unable to maintain regular course conditions because of weather. If scores were acceptable for handicap purposes during these times, the Handicap Index of players could be unfairly distorted.
What if I reside in a state that’s inactive but play in a state that’s active?
Let’s say you live in Colorado but play golf in Florida in January – in that case, your score does count toward your Handicap Index. Just remember that, as in all cases, any rounds played on a course other than your home course should receive an Away or “A” score designation when posting the score.
Who determines the inactive season?
Your local Allied Golf Association (the Colorado Golf Association). Note that the duration varies by region with some states (like California and Florida, for example) always staying active due to a favorable year-round climate.
Colorado Inactive Season: November 15-March 15

New Rules for Tennis Court 2 - M&M Tennis Center
Dear Members,
After reviewing court usage over the past year, we have found that Court 2 is used more frequently for tennis than for pickleball. Because of this, we are implementing new guidelines regarding pickleball play on Court 2.
Effective immediately:
• Court 2 may still be reserved for pickleball; however, a full court fee of $45 for 90 minutes plus an additional $10 taping fee will be applied to each reservation.
• This applies to both staff–assisted bookings and self–bookings.
• Court taping must be requested at least 72 hours in advance.
• Members may not bring their own tape to mark lines, as unauthorized taping leads to
• unnecessary wear and maintenance issues.
• Planning ahead and scheduling on Court 1 when possible will help reduce repeated taping and removal, ultimately preserving the court surface and “reducing waste!”
For those wishing to reserve a pickleball-ready court, Court 1 remains taped year-round.
• When reserving Court 1 for pickleball, as it is split into two pickleball courts, the cost is $22.50 for 90 minutes.
• Court 1A and 1B are busiest between 7am - 9am daily, with greater availability for the remainder of the day—please plan accordingly.
These updates have been reviewed and approved by both the Director of Membership and the Director of Spa, Fitness and Recreation. Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our facility. We look forward to seeing you on the courts.
Scott Leifer, Director of Racquet Sports

Build a Stronger You in the Year Ahead
As the new year begins, motivation is high, but lasting results come from deliberate, sustainable choices rather than short bursts of effort. This year, consider shifting your focus away from quick fixes and toward long-term fitness strategies that support overall wellness.
1. Prioritize Strength Training
Strength training remains one of the most effective ways to enhance metabolism, build functional movement, and support healthy aging. Even two sessions per week can increase muscle mass, improve joint stability, and enhance everyday performance
2. Add Movement Throughout Your Day
Small habits like walking meetings, taking the stairs, mobility breaks between tasks, accumulate into meaningful improvements in energy, posture, and mood. Consistency matters more than perfection.
3. Support Your Recovery
Adequate sleep, proper hydration, and intentional recovery practices such as stretching, foam rolling, or yoga help your body adapt to training. Recovery isn’t a luxury; it’s a cornerstone of progress.
4. Personalize Your Path
No two fitness journeys look the same. Consider scheduling a session with one of our Personal Trainers to set individualized goals, refine technique, and build a program aligned with your lifestyle and aspirations.
This year, commit to strength, resilience, and mindful progress. The Fitness Center team is here to support you every step of the way. Here’s to your healthiest year yet!
A LOOK AHEAD:
Try It All: Trainer Specialty Showcase
Experience the breadth of expertise within our Personal Training Team during this dynamic one-hour fitness sampler. Watch your Week Ahead emails for the date, time, and location!
Start the New Year Strong with a FullBody Range of Motion Assessment
If your New Year’s resolution is to move better, feel better, or finally commit to your health, there is no better place to start than understanding how your body moves. A full-body range of motion assessment can reveal what your body needs to move better, feel better, and perform at its best. As a Medical Exercise Specialist, Logan Scott assesses how each major joint in your body moves, identifies restriction or asymmetries and helps you to understand how these affect your posture, mobility and overall function.
Your Assessment Includes:
• Joint mobility testing
• Postural and movement pattern understanding
• Identification of muscle imbalances and mobility limitations
Contact the Fitness Center Front Desk to schedule your assessment.

FITNESS CHALLENGE: The Consistency Quest
GOAL:
Move with intention for 20 minutes every day this month. Whether it's strength training, yoga, a brisk outdoor walk, or time on the rower, the focus is consistency rather than intensity. Members who complete all 31 days will be entered into a drawing for a complimentary personal training session and a Vuori item from our retail shop!
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
• Track your daily movement on the sheet available at the Fitness Center
• Check in with staff each week for tips, accountability, and encouragement.
• Celebrate your progress with the Fitness Tracker board in the Fitness Center Lobby!
WHY IT WORKS:
Consistent, moderate movement improves metabolic health, boosts energy, and builds a sustainable foundation for long-term fitness, an ideal mindset as we begin a new year.
