February Issue, 1961

The Garden of the Gods Resort & Club is celebrating 75 years of excellence this year! The original member newsletter used to be called the Camel Chatter, so we are giving our members a blast from the past this year!

MANAGING DIRECTOR
Dear Members,
As we move into February, I’m excited to share another vibrant month at Garden of the Gods Resort and Club; one that reflects both where we are today and the strong sense of community that has defined this place for 75 years.
February brings a full calendar of opportunities to gather, connect, and enjoy everything the Club has to offer — from Valentine’s celebrations and member mingles, to golf, racquet sports, wellness programming, and family-friendly events across the property.
You’ll also notice subtle nods to our past woven throughout the newsletter as part of our anniversary year. Those touches are meant to spark conversation and reflection and we hope they inspire you to share your own memories. Whether you’ve been a member for decades or just joined our community, your stories are an important part of our Club’s ongoing narrative.
We invite you to submit photos and memories to our historian, Leah Davis Witherow at leahdaviswitherow@gmail.com. Select submissions may be featured in future newsletters, social media, and our upcoming keepsake book.
Most importantly, thank you for being part of what makes Garden of the Gods such a special place; not just for its setting, but for the people who bring it to life every day. I look forward to seeing many of you around the Club this month and throughout the year as we continue celebrating, connecting, and making new memories together.
Sincerely,
John Reilly Managing Director
While tennis was in full swing at Garden of the Gods from its very opening, it took years for Al Hill's friends to convince him to add a championship golf course. Once convinced, however, he acted swiftly hiring course architect J. Press Maxwell and lobbying the Colorado Springs city fathers to provide the mesa site with adequate water for the

"The early golf carts only had 3 wheels and a tiller to steer with. Several times a bump would wrench the tiller form the driver with the passenger and driver being dispatched to the ground."- Bill Lawe, Kissing Camels' First Golf Pro

Construction of the course began in the late fifties. The design called for eighteen holes covering 7,000 yards in a unique, star-shaped configuration that allowed for four returns to the new clubhouse. The clubhouse had a Moroccan theme and a wraparound "widow's walk" balcony, which made it possible for "golf widows" to watch for their returning husbands. Named for the famous Kissing Camels rock formation nearby, the club officially opened for play in June, 1961. Bill Lawe, the first pro, thought he'd try on the job for size...and stayed for thirty-eight years.

"Many of you will remember Frankie Chavez, the golf club's third starter. One time, a member was golfing in Scotland, wearing a sweater from the club, when a local man recognized the logo and asked if he was a member. The answer: yes. The next question: Is that rascal Frankie still there?"- Bill Lawe

We believe our purpose is to create incredible memories that will stay with you, our guests, and our members for a lifetime. It comes from our belief that life is richer when we truly connect with the people and the world around us — Enriching Lives by Nature.

Speed. It’s the word that defines the modern game. Whether you’re new to the game or chasing Tour-level performance, the pursuit of speed off the tee is everything. At TaylorMade, they’ve made it their mission to help you achieve that speed—and do it with a driver that’s fit for your swing.
TaylorMade Qi4D drivers, their fastest, most fittable family of drivers. Every detail, from aerodynamics to face technology, was engineered with one goal: to help you swing faster, hit it farther, and find more fairways.
Speed isn’t just about the club—it’s about the fit. TaylorMade studied how golfers deliver the clubface at impact and discovered three distinct rotation rates: high, medium, and low. That insight led to the development of their REAX™ shafts, designed to complement your swing profile. Playing a shaft that matches your clubhead rotation rate helps you hit better drives more often and makes your mis-hits more playable and consistent.
Shaped for Speed
If they are going to make their fastest drivers, the heads had to be aerodynamic. Hundreds of advanced simulations went into shaping each Qi4D head for the perfect balance of speed and forgiveness. The result? A family of drivers that helps you swing faster without sacrificing stability.
Fitting Experiences and Demo Days have been scheduled for the 2026 season, call the Golf Shop to sign up (719) 636-2520.

As cooler fall weather establishes itself across much of the country, golfers in some states will find their golf season move from “active” to “inactive” as it pertains to their Handicap Index®. What does that mean, what’s the purpose and what if you play a round in a state that is active but reside in a state that isn’t? The USGA Handicapping Department covers your questions below.
Simply put, the inactive season is the period on the calendar during which any round you play in your home state or region does not count toward your Handicap Index.
But my course is still open during the inactive season, why doesn’t my score count?
The inactive season exists to address how seasonal weather can impact the conditions of a golf course. When an Allied Golf Association (AGA) issues a Course Rating™ and Slope Rating™ for each set of tees at a golf course, both are based on effective playing length and difficulty under “normal” conditions. In many parts of the country, there are certain months when facilities remain open but are unable to maintain regular course conditions because of weather. If scores were acceptable for handicap purposes during these times, the Handicap Index of players could be unfairly distorted.
if I reside in a state that’s inactive but play in a state that’s active?
Let’s say you live in Colorado but play golf in Florida in January – in that case, your score does count toward your Handicap Index. Just remember that, as in all cases, any rounds played on a course other than your home course should receive an Away or “A” score designation when posting the score.
Your local Allied Golf Association (the Colorado Golf Association). Note that the duration varies by region with some states (like California and Florida, for example) always staying active due to a favorable year-round climate.
Colorado Inactive Season: November 15-March 15

At the highest level of wellness, fitness is not about intensity alone, it’s about sustainability.
Research consistently shows that the most effective fitness programs include:
• Strength training to preserve muscle mass and bone density
• Cardiovascular conditioning to support heart health and metabolic function
• Mobility and recovery to improve joint health and prevent injury
When these elements are trained intentionally, the body adapts more efficiently, stress is reduced, and results are more sustainable.
Training with purpose—rather than pushing to exhaustion—creates strength that lasts well beyond the gym. If you’re unsure how to balance these components, a personal training session can help create a customized approach aligned with your goals and lifestyle.

The View at Kissing Camels | 6pm - 8pm
$65 per Player (billed to your member account)
Learn the basics of Mahjong in a relaxed, social setting! If you would like, arrive early for a casual social hour, allowing time to mingle. The Kissing Camels Bar and Grille will be available to take food and drink orders. Game play will be from 6pm-8pm and we recommend eating before play starts.
When play starts, you will be guided through the fundamentals of Mahjong in a less structured, conversational format that blends learning with connection and fun. This class is perfect for those who want to learn the game while enjoying a lively, social atmosphere. No prior experience is required. All materials are provided.
