MEMORIES ON THE MESA

Did You Know?

The first USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship was held at Kissing Camels in 1982.

The first year of the golf course, Al offered $1,000 to any one who could make a hole in one. When Dave Johnston Jr. made the first one, Al quickly said “that’s $1,000 credit at the club.” Several months later the policy was discontinued.

After the club was rebuilt in 1994, only one original boulder remains at the mantel and hearth of the Rocks Bar fireplace.

In 1998, golf architect Mark Rathert added nine holes to Kissing Camels, making it a 27-hole course.

"In the early years of the tennis tournaments, there would always be a dozen private jets that flew in for the competitions."

As we look ahead, we remain committed to honoring our history while evolving as an inclusive, holistic wellness destination for future generations.”

In honor of the Hill Family's time capsule they planted back in 1950, we will be putting together our own time capsule filled with significant artifacts, stories, and photographs honoring the past 75 years.

What was in the original time capsule?

It was a snapshot of the times containing a piece of bubble gum, a bottle of Dr. Pepper, a Coke, a Hopalong Cassidy comic book, a plat of the survey for the development, current magazines and newspapers, brochures and curios commemorating Seven Falls, Jacoby's book on Canasta, and "other items," which according to newspaper accounts, included an unlucky chameleon that scurried into the capsule a moment before it was sealed.

Online tee times are available 7-days in advance starting at 8am am in April. Aerification is scheduled from March 30th –April 10th (weather permitting).

These tee times will be in 7- and 8-minute intervals for one hour. On days when events are scheduled these earlier tee times will not be available. As a reminder, singles, twosomes, and walk ups do not have priority on the golf course. Please do not expect to play through foursomes and threesomes that have scheduled tee times. Our goal is to create a more enjoyable golf experience for the entire membership, we ask that you do your part to assist us in achieving this goal.

A reminder of our golf course dress code:

Any inappropriate attire may result in denial of access to golf facilities.

Spring Course Aerification Begins

Monday, March 30th

Aerating greens will create a short-term disruption in the golfer’s eye, but the long-term benefits seriously outweigh any inconvenience. Although it may seem like our maintenance team likes to mess with the golfer and aerate twice a year because we like to. Truth is that aeration is an extremely labor-intensive process that takes many hours of hard work. Here are five of the top reasons we take the time to get this process done right.

1. WE AERATE TO IMPROVE, NOT ANNOY

Putting greens receive more traffic than any other playing surface. The aeration process helps relieve the compaction caused by all that traffic. It also helps create a firm, smooth putting surface by controlling thatch and promoting healthy turf roots.

2. SAND AND SEED

A heavy application of topdressing following aeration may appear to make putting greens less playable. However, filling aeration holes with sand helps create a smoother surface. Sand also creates channels for water and air movement, dilutes thatch and helps putting greens recover from aeration more quickly. This is our opportunity to inter-seed bent grass into the greens creating good seed and soil contact for germination.

3. REDUCE THATCH

Thatch is a layer of old plant material that accumulates at the soil surface. If thatch on putting greens is not diluted by aeration and topdressing, it will act like a sponge, holding water near the surface. Excessive thatch creates soft playing conditions, inconsistent green speeds and increases the risk of disease.

4.

GIVE THE SOIL WHAT IT NEEDS

Aeration gives us the opportunity to apply nutrients directly to the soil. We apply any nutrients that are deficient and sweep into the holes with the sand.

5. TIMING IS EVERYTHING

After a long winter of abuse, now is the time to give the greens some love. We aerate in early spring to repair any winter damage and to kick start a healthy growing season.

AERIFICATION WILL TAKE PLACE MARCH 30th – APRIL 10th – weather permitting – we will have 18-holes available; course rotations will change based on the daily aeration schedule.

WELLNESS UPDATES

Longevity | LIVE LONGER - AND BETTER

What if the goal isn’t just to live longer—but to live better, for longer?

In Dr. Barber’s blog, he explores the difference between lifespan (how many years you live) and the quality of those years—how long you remain active, independent, and in good health. While people are living longer than ever, many spend the last decade or more managing chronic conditions—the gap between the two continues to grow.

At Strata Med, our approach to longevity is rooted in closing that gap—helping you extend not just your years, but your vitality, energy, and quality of life.

From nutrition and movement to sleep and stress management, small, consistent choices can have a powerful impact on how you age.

Because longevity isn’t just about adding years to your life— it’s about adding life to your years.

Longevity isn’t just about adding years—it’s about optimizing how your body performs over time.

In our latest blog, VO 2 Max and Body Composition: Key Metrics for Long-Term Health and Longevity, we explore why two of the most powerful predictors of aging well are how efficiently your body uses oxygen and how your body is composed at a cellular level.

At Strata Med, we’re bringing this insight to life through PNOE Clinical-Grade Metabolic Testing—a cutting-edge assessment that gives us a real-time look at how your heart, lungs, and metabolism are working together.

Through a simple breath analysis, PNOE measures 23 key biomarkers, including:

• VO₂ max, a leading indicator of cardiovascular fitness and longevity

• Metabolic rate, to understand how your body burns energy at rest and during activity

• Fuel utilization, revealing how efficiently you burn fat vs. carbohydrates

• Early markers of metabolic and cardiopulmonary health

This isn’t guesswork—it’s precision. With this data, we can design highly personalized strategies to improve performance, support weight management, and ultimately extend your healthspan. Because the better your body functions today, the stronger it carries you into tomorrow.

This session is perfect for anyone looking to build confidence in the weight room and take their strength training to the next level.

WHY WALKING IS ONE OF THE BEST EXERCISES AT ANY AGE Walking is often overlooked as exercise, but research consistently shows that it is one of the most beneficial forms of physical activity, especially for long-term health and mobility.

Here’s why walking deserves a place in every fitness routine:

Supports heart health | Regular walking improves circulation, lowers blood pressure, and helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

Improves joint mobility | Gentle movement lubricates the joints and helps reduce stiffness, particularly in the hips, knees, and ankles.

Enhances balance and coordination | Consistent walking strengthens stabilizing muscles that help prevent falls and maintain independence.

Boosts mental wellbeing | Walking, especially outdoors, can significantly reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance mental clarity.

Encourages sustainable activity | Walking is easy to maintain long term. Even small amounts of daily movement add up to meaningful health benefits.

As the weather improves, consider taking a short walk after meals, exploring local paths, or combining indoor workouts with outdoor activity to keep your routine fresh and enjoyable.

FITNESS CHALLENGE:

Step Into Spring Challenge

For April, we’re challenging members to reach at least 6,000 steps per day.

This goal encourages steady daily movement and is achievable through a combination of workouts and everyday activity.

WAYS TO REACH YOUR STEPS:

• Walking errands or other daily activities

Members can track their progress on the Fitness Challenge Board in the Fitness Center by marking each day they reach the goal.

CHALLENGE BENCHMARKS:

• Daily Goal: 6,000 steps

• 15 Days Completed: 90,000 steps

• Full Month Goal (30 days): 180,000 steps

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s building consistent daily movement that supports heart health, mobility, and overall wellbeing.
