I feel lucky and excited to be able to tell my story about the Queen of Dolomites, Cortina, city to which I am particularly devoted, which moves me and that inspired me for this magazine edition. I spent my adolescence attending a boarding school in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Those years lived amongst typical emotional conflicts made me fall in love with one of the most beautiful places in the world! Perfect combination of beauty, nature, history, culture and glamour. A breathtaking skyline that makes you feel in the centre of the world where the Dolomites, Unesco World Heritage, hug you giving you strength and joy, which fills your heart. Amazing nature, perfumes, smells, respect, forests and wood. Key points also of my career path, which brought, with much joy, the chance to spend time in this amazing place with my family.
1
The place where ‘do good’ is a rule, where many designers and famous Archistars create amazing and customizable projects. The place where the wood is the real protagonist, anywhere. Both in the houses with floors, walls, furniture and coating and outdoors with terraces, patios and lodges, everywhere in the surrounding landscape, with its amazing forests. There is also Cortina of the international Jet Set, visited and taken as inspiration by international writers, musicians, poets, film sets that we will never forget. But the only real star is the wood!

Wood with a view - Stars wooden Floors in Cortina
Dolomites and wood: an antique, but never simple connection. In the mountain houses and in the beautiful and welcoming flats, the wooden floors are the main characters of the warm and sophisticated atmospheres of these locals with a view. The different wood species, the different surface treatments and the different laying geometries may recreate different styles starting from the most modern to the minimal and classical ones, keeping a connection that consists in the elegance and welcoming of the feelings created. The modern wooden floors, however, keep only the positive parts of the boards which are originally used in small mountain houses: untouched is the heat and beauty, what completely changed is the reliability and technology used to produce them. Every piece overcomes severe quality checks and it is guaranteed by many certifications which ensure it, for instance the absence of harmful substances.

A flat with a breathtaking view over the mountains could not be anything but total wood: a modern and welcoming design to fully enjoy relaxing moments in Cortina. The project, the architecture and the interior design of such residence have been taken care in great detail by Giulio De Filippo and Fabrizio Luchetti, of Outline Studio74. The parquet selected for every location, bedrooms and bathrooms included, is a prefinished floor by Garbelotto of thermo-treated Oak with habitat finishing, developed by the R&D department of the Treviso company, specifically studied to make the wood natural both at the sight and touch enhancing the characteristics of the different wood species. The oak shade and its texture perfectly matches the wood chosen for the walls: a renovated spruce coming from ancient barns and accomodations in Cortina used for both the ceiling and the boiserie that frames the windows with a breathtaking view over the Dolomites. Metal inserts and a skillful mirror game complete the timeless atmosphere of the apartment. Like every Garbelotto prefinished floor, this one is also suitable for bio-construction considered the E1 class for the release of formaldehyde and upon request FSC® certifiable.

The main character of such environments is the typical mountain area wood: the larch, here presented in its aged-look that perfectly combines with unique furnishings, enhanced by antique furniture found in old houses of the Dolomites Queen and finely renovated.
2
In the living room boards have been laid to form an artwork with the Creator® system, thanks to which flooring with peculiar geometries are conceived. The warm and welcoming color of the mountain-typical wood species was realized with a natural handcrafted varnishing that perfectly match the decorated ceiling, creating a both friendly and fancy atmosphere. The wood was laid in every space of the house, even in the master bathroom where it was used for the coating of the hot tub, creating a continuum of flooring and coatings. Like every floor produced by Parchettificio Garbelotto, the two-layer birch floor has been entirely produced in Italy, guaranteeing a product with the best quality certifications required within the international framework.

The connection between all these concept rooms is represented by the floor: the choice could be nothing but a parquet of great personality: CREATOR® by Garbelotto. The Creator® Line represents the spearhead of the full catalogue of the company. These square compositions, in this case the Asia model, take inspiration from antique and prestigious households and are realized in oak, whose veins enhance the carvings. They perfectly match the furnishings and the picked colours: the green and amber of the nature and the red and night blue of the theatre are enhanced by the warm colours of the oak and by the fine carvings of the Asia model. The square compositions are the result of a skilful artisanal work: every piece is handmade by master carpenters and is refined with precise care, aimed at preserving the timeless charm of the floor formed by such unique pieces. Like every Garbelotto floor, they may be completely customizable in several colourings and surface finishing, accommodating interior designers and architects requests.

“The wood is a natural material, which allows us to live in a healthy environment; it’s a living material, characterized by a pleasant scent. The warm and smooth surface creates positive sensations both to the touch and smell and in fact the selection of the wood flooring for our project was natural. We wanted an original, timeless flooring”.
Cinque piani a tema: teatro, cinema natura, fashion e naturalmente le suite all’ultimo piano in stile ampezzano. Ambra Hotel starts out as an historical house in the first years of the 1900s and is placed in the center of Cortina D’Ampezzo. The goal was to carry out a conservative makeover by using innovative materials and designs and to create a boutique Hotel in the heart of the queen of the Dolomites, characterized by a highly emotional impact. Five themed floors: theatre, cinema, nature, fashion and of course the suite located on the top floor. The experiential tourism is a constantly growing market, hence the idea of encouraging the more and more demanding customers to look for something that makes the difference. The main goal was ambitious: becoming a gem hotel, a ‘must’, with only twenty-eight rooms but refined, exactly like it is suggested by the international Hotellerie trends.
The wood in the mountain environments is very important and used to communicate several feelings and sensations that include all the senses. How did you choose the appearance and finishing of the wooden floors?

Which have been the advantages of choosing Parchettificio Garbelotto for this project, considered referential in the hotellerie world?
I know the reality of the Parchettificio Garbelotto because of both professional and personal reasons. Visiting the headquarters and the showroom was an important and useful experience for our designers. New ideas, drafts and technical skills are developed. I had the impression of dealing with skillful and responsible consultants, both on the technical and on the aesthetic side; driven by a real passion for their job. I visited the company and witnessed the handcrafted composition of ‘my quadrotte’. Love for wood, technological research and passion are the key words of the enterprise, without omitting the Made in Italy!
According to you, which are the advantages of laying wooden floors in the hotels and more in general in the contract sector? The advantages are several: more than thousand aesthetical solutions, warm and living surfaces, nowadays even easy to clean. Water-based and oil varnishing guarantee the endurance of the flooring over time. Which are, according to you, the trending wood species and finishing in the year that has just started? The wooden flooring world is very vast and it is hereby quite difficult to foresee the tendencies for the 2019. I believe naturally treated woods such as oak will be successful, as well as walnut. I consider it timeless, a real ever-green material.

LAB 20.21 Progetti e design a Cortina Project and design in Cortina

In Cortina, the “Queen of the Dolomites” everything is special, unique. Surrounded by legendary mountains like the Tofane and the Cristallo, now Unesco world heritage site, Cortina is located in the Ampezzo basin, in an amazing and unique position, world-renowned since 1956. Everything in Cortina is particular, provided with great care of the details. LAB 20.21 is no exception: a showroom that perfectly combines creativity, genius, modernity, with respect to tradition. Starting from the name, LAB 20.21 that appears to be a premonition of the alpine skiing world championship taking place in Cortina in 2021. The furnishings proposal suggested by international companies, local artisans, young designers have been cleverly inserted in a contest aimed at enhancing the peculiarity of every single element. In the areas most subjected to clomping, the best choice could only be the Clip Up System®, the revolutionary laying system patented all over the world that allows the rapid substitution of single boards with no shifts nor impediments. The wood selected is Thermo-oak characterised by a warm and welcoming colour. Lab 20.21 and Garbelotto created a great partnership, a mixing of know-how and professionality combined in a modern showroom whose purpose is to gift Cortina with an innovative and constantly evolving vision.

BOISERIE
BOISERIE
Even the boiserie, almost mandatory at this latitude, is very creative: some areas were coated with MATERIA 3.0, a wall covering system realized with antique recovered wood. The wood species are 300-400 years old pinewood and spruce. The boards have different widths that vary from 13 to 16 mm. In order to obtain a three-dimensional effect, they are all handcrafted and every piece is unique and certified 100% made in Italy. In other areas, an approach of great personality was preferred: the old elm, also produced with antique boards.

1 - 3 Posa con Clip Up System® 2 Uffici direzionali Kering 4 Clip Up System® con tavola e clip

The Parchettificio Garbelotto provides products subjected to the V.O.C. verification, delivering to every client the certificate which highlights that the products of the company do not contain harmful substances and that the presence of other dangerous compounds is below the level established by the German Regulation AgBB/DlBt and FSC® certificates. The French multinational company is pleased with the made in Italy quality, the beauty and the elegance of the Garbelotto wooden floors and has for this reason assigned to the same enterprise the proceedings of the new Alexander McQueen headquarter in Florence.

TOTALLY INSPECTABLE This new international patented laying system, besides having great sound-proofing characteristics, has the huge advantage of making the wooden floor totally inspectable: all boards can be removed one by one and eventually replaced, without having to remove the whole floor. It is definitely ideal for ‘turn key’ projects and for those ambiances where inspection is necessary: it grants an easy and quick access when faulty wires or pipes under the parquet are to be fixed or replaced. In fact, a sucker is enough to remove a plank and then replacing it in less than a minute. This operation would be more difficult and would take much longer in a traditional floating floor, or even worse, in a glued floor that would also require the partial removal of furniture.

And these are not the only advantages. The Clip Up System® floors are reusable. All planks can be easily removed and replaced elsewhere very quickly, with a perfect result, and if necessary extra planks can be laid for a wider surface. Clip Up System® is also eco-friendly: it does not require any chemical substance, such as glues, or any magnets and the ambience is preserved from harmful magnetic fields. The clips are made of stainless steel, are high resistant and reusable.

Wooden Fact Check DOMANDE
Questions.
On which surfaces may the parquet be laid?
Is it possibile to lay the wooden floor in the kitchen or in the bathroom?
Thanks to its guaranteed quality and the selected raw material, Garbelotto wooden floor may definitely be laid both in the kitchen and bathroom. As a matter of fact, if the water does not stagnate over time, it will not damage the parquet. In order to have a perfect wooden floor, it is advisable to use specific waterrepellent products and to maintain an air humidity rate between 45% and 60% and a temperature of about 20/22°C. Airing the spaces after showers or similar is also suggestible, in order to avoid that the steam stagnates, turning into excessive humidity. The wood is a natural living material and needs the same environmental conditions that are considered adequate and health for the human being.
The parquet may be directly laid on the subfloor, at least of 4 cm with a right proportion of humidity reached after an adequate drying that can vary from 4 to 7 months. The parquet may be laid on a subfloor composed by a pre-existing floor, provided a good condition and the secure join, as in the case of tiles, ceramics, marble and similar and stone. The floor must be perfectly washed and degreased in order to make it adherent. The laying may take place with no contraindications, after the verification of all the intended requirements for a perfect subfloor. Moquette, PVC and lineoleum are incompatible for the laying: they have to be removed, as well as any trace of old glue.
Is it possible to lay the parquet in cases where underfloor heating and cooling are installed?
When dealing with underfloor heating and cooling the choice of wooden floors may absolutely be taken into consideration. All the prefinished floors and most of all the wood species with high dimensional stability such as oak, teak and iroko, are suitable for the laying on underfloor heating installations, due to the multilayered support carved in several parts, which allows the even heat diffusion throughout the whole surface. It is important to highlight that the technologies of heating installations and cooling are constantly evolving. It is necessary to focus on the thermotechnical planning of the subfloor system, ensuring that the installation is projected to maintain a suitable microclimate in all eventualities. Pressurizing the installation is also highly suggested in order to avoid problems concerning the coils and to implement the pre-cycle of heating and cooling before the laying.
What risk do you run by purchaising imported products?
Imported production has in most cases only one advantage: lower costs. On the other hand it has a huge disadvantage: the non-traceability of the product. We are not able to know the materials in the product and their origin, such as glues and paints, which may contain formaldehyde or other harmful substances. The impossibility of knowing the quality of raw materials and components may lead to the nonobservance of rules and norms and consequently of the final consumer.
