New Orleans brides are ditching overdone updos for natural looks that are low maintenance and last for hours.
BY MISTY MILIOTO
WHEN IT COMES TO BRIDAL HAIRSTYLES IN 2026, the message is clear. Gone are the days of overly structured, heavily sprayed updos that feel stif and unnatural. Today’s brides are prioritizing authenticity and comfort along with styles that can withstand an extended celebration.
“We’re seeing a lot of polished, efortless styles — soft low buns, modern French twists and textured waves that move but still last,” says Tina Rodosta, owner and lead artist at Verde Beauty Studio. “Brides care less about what’s trendy and more about how their hair looks eight hours later. Longevity is everything.”
Rather than requesting specific celebrity looks, modern brides are communicating in terms of mood and feeling.
“It’s less about copying a celebrity and more about a vibe — clean, elevated, timeless,” Rodosta says. “We hear ‘soft,’ ‘relaxed’ and ‘nothing too done’ all the time. Brides want to look like themselves, just the wedding day version of themselves.”
The season does influence styling choices. Spring weddings tend toward lighter, softer aesthetics with more movement and romance, while fall brides often opt for slightly more structured and dramatic looks.
“Weather plays a role, but so does the overall mood of the season,” Rodosta says.
For brides in New Orleans specifically, humidity is always a consideration.
“We build structure first, then softness,” Rodosta says. “Low buns, textured updos and

secured waves hold up best. The goal is hair that still looks good at the second line.”
Some brides prefer a trial run on hair before the wedding date, while others “are more go-withthe-flow and trust the process," Rodosta says.
“There’s no right or wrong — it’s about what makes that bride feel calm and excited,” she says.
Brides with short hair also have plenty of chic options, including soft bends, volume at the crown, finger waves or a statement accessory, all of which photograph beautifully.
“It’s less about length and more about styling with intention,” Rodosta says.
Veils are far from passé, but they've been evolving. Rodosta has seen a mix of classic veils with modern twists like bows, pearls, floral pins or custom pieces that brides can remove for the reception.

When coordinating hairstyles with headpieces, planning is essential.
“Choose the hair and accessory together,” Rodosta says. “Veils love low buns and half-up styles; combs work best with texture; and tiaras need structure. When they’re planned together, everything looks intentional.”
Rodosta recommends hiring a professional stylist to give the bride one less thing to worry about.
“A stylist brings experience and peace of mind,” Rodosta says. “We know how hair behaves in heat, humidity and long days — and how to adjust on the fly. Most brides want to relax and be taken care of, not troubleshoot their hair.”
Ultimately, the philosophy behind modern bridal hair is refreshingly practical.
“Bridal hair today isn’t about perfection, it’s about feeling confident, comfortable and like yourself,” Rodosta says. “Especially in New Orleans, your hair has to move, last and keep up with the celebration.”

Grazing tables are edible, crowd-satisfying works of art.

PLE at contemporary weddings, transforming traditional cocktail hours into visually stunning, photo-worthy experiences. What began as simple cheese stations has evolved into elaborate displays that serve both visual and practical purposes. Wedding planner Amanda Price of Amanda Price Events says grazing tables not only nourish guests, but they can facilitate socializing and put people at ease.
“Grazing tables create a natural gathering point but also encourage guests to move, mingle and connect instead of staying glued to one spot,” she says. “They’re social by design.”
Jen Sherrod, owner and general manager of Elysian Events & Catering, says the tables are inviting.
“They are an easy way for guests to mingle more and feel a bit more casual than passed (appetizers),” Sherrod says. “They are also beautiful and make for a nice ‘wow’ moment when they are nice and full.”
The trend started gaining momentum before the Covid-19 pandemic and experienced a brief pause amid social and physical distancing mandates. But experts say they’ve been increasingly in demand.
The shift from traditional passed appetizers to grazing tables reflects couples’ wishes to host more relaxed, versatile celebrations.
“I think people are leaning toward more casual service and being able to ofer a larger variety of items on a grazing table, which can include hors d’oeuvres, cheese, charcuterie, veggies and dips,” Sherrod says. Price says grazing tables serve a strategic purpose in the schedule of the wedding day, which can require extended photography sessions, room flips or moments when the schedule “stretches a bit,” she says. “They

can help guests stay comfortable without even noticing the wait.”
When it comes to menu planning, grazing tables typically complement, rather than replace, full meal service.
“Generally for a wedding you are providing more of a full meal, so you would need additional food,” Sherrod says.
However, couples can adjust other appetizer elements when incorporating a grazing table into their plans.
While cheese remains the most popular centerpiece, other popular items include a variety of fruits, house-made jams, candied pecans, fresh-baked focaccia, crostini and crackers.
Customization options are virtually limitless. Sherrod has designed a cheese “room” featuring multiple tables, each representing places the couple had lived, with regional cheeses and foods from

those locations. Tables also can accommodate dietary restrictions, ofering vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Important considerations include food safety and venue logistics. Sherrod recommends keeping grazing tables out for a maximum of two hours indoors, or just one hour for outdoor events.
“You do have to be careful with outside venues, especially if the weather is warmer. Flies can be a real issue,” she says.
Meanwhile, the trend shows no signs of slowing, with Sherrod noting an evolution toward dessert stations ofering multiple mini desserts, giving guests even more variety to explore.
And, the visual impact of these colorful displays can help enhance the overall atmosphere of the wedding.
“The ability to incorporate a large variety of items and diferent layers, heights and colors make them so visually striking,” Sherrod says.

EVENT PRODUCER AND DJ KENDALL BURKE is no stranger to curating events for members of New Orleans’ LGBTQ scene. For the past three years, she’s regularly hosted dance parties, music showcases and other celebrations.
But now Burke is on a mission to change up the wedding industry by making nuptials more afordable, accessible and communal for queer couples.
In December, Burke threw the first edition of Dearly Beloved Dance Party at Soulet Muse, a “mass wedding celebrating love in all forms” where four couples exchanged vows in front of strangers and friends alike.
Then attendees hit the dance floor for Burke’s DJ set. Burke plans to host a similar event in New Orleans on June 1 at Gasa Gasa. She’s also planning a couple similar events in other cities, including Minneapolis and New York.
“This is about chosen family,” Burke says. “If you want to elope, but you don’t want to do it alone, then come party with a whole community of people who are going to love and support you — even if you just met.”
The group wedding upholds some wedding traditions and also creates new ones.
Each couple got a customized cake. And local musician Chloe Marie serenaded everyone in attendance with Etta James’ romantic classic “At Last.” An ofciant performed a typical introduction and vows which were repeated by all four couples in unison. Then the mics were cut and each couple exchanged quiet, private vows.
A few exchanged rings and handwritten notes.
The goal was to keep the celebration stressfree and help couples cut down on costs, says Burke, who was able to secure sponsorships from several vendors, along with other contributions, like food, booze and flowers.
“We never want cost to be a barrier,” Burke says.
It was also a show of solidarity among an-often marginalized community.

“Especially in the South, it’s still questionable if expressing your identity is safe,” Burke says.
“It breaks my heart to think of people hopping on a call for a DJ or a florist and to be told, ‘I’m not going to do your wedding’ (because of bigotry). I wanted to remove that fear and just let people get married, and have it be an easier experience.”
At the end of the night, Burke — like many of the participants and attendees — felt an overwhelming sense of joy in the room and couldn’t hold back happy tears.
“It was so much fun,” Burke says. “It just all came together, and it was such a community-driven wedding ... it was beautiful.”
