4

Online classes at Galveston College follow the same attendance expectations as face-toface courses. However, attendance in an online class is measured by participation , not by simply logging in. To stay active and avoid being marked absent, you must regularly engage with your course by completing assignments, participating in discussions, and communicating with your instructor.

What Counts as “Attendance” in an Online Class You are considered “present” when you actively participate in one or more of the following ways: 

Submitting an assignment or quiz in Canvas

Posting or replying to a discussion

Attending a scheduled Zoom class or virtual meeting

Contributing to a group project or peer review

Messaging your instructor about course content or feedback

💡 Simply logging into Canvas without completing coursework or discussions does not count as attendance. Why Engagement Matters Engagement is more than just a requirement—it’s how you learn, connect, and stay motivated. In online courses, students who check in often, participate in class discussions, and communicate with instructors are more likely to succeed. You’ll gain the most from your class when you: 

Log in several times each week

Review announcements and module instructions

Ask questions early if you’re unsure about an assignment

Contribute your ideas to discussion boards or group activities

Staying on Track Set up a regular schedule to log in and work on your class, just like you would attend a faceto-face course. Most online students find success by dedicating 6–9 hours per week per course for reading, watching lectures, completing assignments, and participating in online discussions.

5

💬 Remember: Your instructors are here to support you. Communicate early and often— especially if you experience technical difficulties or need extra time due to personal circumstances. ONLINE CLASS FORMATS At Galveston College, classes are offered in several formats to meet different learning styles and scheduling needs. Each type of course provides opportunities for interaction, collaboration, and instructor feedback—but the way you engage can vary.

Finding Your Course Format 6

When you register for classes, check your course schedule carefully: 

Courses labeled with “Internet” are fully online.

Courses labeled “Hybrid” are mix on-campus and online learning.

Synchronous online classes will list meeting days and times in the schedule.

If you’re unsure about your course format, contact your instructor or the Distance Education Office before the semester begins. Pro Tip Many students start with a hybrid course to build confidence in online learning before taking a fully online class. This approach helps balance flexibility with face-to-face interaction. Getting Help Early If you feel stuck, reach out early—before small problems become major obstacles. Your instructor, advisor, and the Distance Education team all want to help you succeed. 📩 When in doubt, send an email! Communication is the key to online success. NETIQUETTE AND ONLINE CONDUCT At Galveston College, we believe that a respectful, inclusive online community supports learning for everyone. “Netiquette” means internet etiquette—the shared guidelines that help us communicate clearly, kindly, and professionally in digital spaces. These guidelines apply to all communication in Canvas discussions, email, chats, and virtual class meetings. Purpose of the Policy The purpose of this Netiquette Policy is to maintain a safe, equitable, and academically focused learning environment for all students and instructors in online and hybrid courses. Every student contributes to this environment by practicing thoughtful communication, active listening, and respect for diverse perspectives. EXPECTATIONS FOR ONLINE COMMUNICATION 1. Be Respectful. Treat your instructor and classmates as you would in a face-to-face classroom. Disagree with ideas, not people. Avoid language that could be seen as sarcastic, dismissive, or personal. 8

2. Use Inclusive and Professional Language. Avoid slang, text-speak, or humor that could be misunderstood. When addressing others, use their preferred names or titles if known – Ex: Address instructors by Dr. XXX or Mr/Mrs.XXX; address students by first name. 3. Stay on Topic. Keep your contributions focused on the discussion prompt or course content. This helps everyone stay engaged and on track. 4. Write Clearly and Proofread. Before posting, reread your message for tone and clarity. Typing in ALL CAPS can appear as shouting. Use standard punctuation and grammar for academic writing. 5. Protect Privacy. Do not share classmates’ work, comments, or personal information outside of Canvas. Remember that all course spaces are academic environments. 6. Ask Questions Early and Politely. If you are unsure about an assignment or policy, ask your instructor directly—politely and clearly. Most confusion can be resolved through proactive communication. SUPPORT EQUITTABLE DIALOGUE Give space for all voices. Avoid dominating discussions and invite quieter peers to share their perspectives. Virtual Class Meeting Etiquette When your online course includes real-time meetings (Zoom, Teams, etc.): 

Arrive on time and mute your microphone when not speaking.

Use respectful backgrounds and attire.

Participate actively, respond, and engage in discussions just as you would in person.

Consequences of Inappropriate Conduct Disrespectful or disruptive online behavior may result in: 1. A written warning from the instructor. 2. Removal from a discussion or virtual meeting. 3. A referral to the Vice President of Student Services, Mr. Ron Crumedy for review under the Student Code of Conduct. Remember Online learning works best when everyone feels safe, respected, and heard. Practicing empathy, professionalism, and patience supports your classmates and strengthens your own communication skills—valuable both in college and beyond. STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED

9

Online learning connects you to classmates, instructors, and resources through technology— but it’s important to stay safe, responsible, and academically honest while doing so. This section covers how to protect your information, follow ethical academic practices, and keep your digital learning environment secure. Protecting Your Digital Identity Your online safety begins with simple habits that keep your personal and academic information secure: 

Use strong passwords with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.

Log out of Canvas and your GC email when using public or shared computers.

Avoid clicking links in messages that seem suspicious or unexpected.

Keep your software updated on your personal technology to reduce the risk of malware or security issues.

💡 If you ever receive a message that looks suspicious, contact the IT Help Desk (servicedesk@gc.edu) before clicking or responding. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY ONLINE Academic integrity means doing your own work and giving credit when you use someone else’s ideas. Galveston College expects all students to uphold honesty and originality in every course. You demonstrate integrity when you: 

Write your own assignments and submit your own work.

Cite any outside sources you reference using MLA or APA format (as taught in your English courses).

Participate in discussions authentically sharing your thoughts, not copying others’.

Ask your instructor when you’re unsure if using AI tools or collaboration is allowed.

🚫 Plagiarism, unauthorized use of AI-generated text, or submitting another student’s work as your own are violations of the Student Code of Conduct and may result in academic penalties. RESPONSIBLE COMMUNICATION Online courses often involve written discussions, group projects, and instructor emails. Maintain professionalism by: 

Checking your GC email and Canvas inbox regularly.

Responding to messages promptly and courteously.

Avoiding emotional or hasty replies—take time to think before you send. 10

Respecting boundaries and maintaining privacy when collaborating with classmates.

💬 Remember: your digital footprint represents you as a student and community member of Galveston College. Staying Connected to Support Staying connected means using your campus resources even if you’re learning from home: 

Follow Galveston College’s official channels for campus updates and alerts.

Attend online workshops or tutoring sessions through Canvas or Microsoft Teams.
