Since revenue from ticket sales and facility rentals only covers a portion of the costs associated with fulfilling this mission, the Center is dependent on the generous annual financial support from donors and program sponsors within our community.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The mission of the Gallo Center for the Arts is to enrich the quality of life in the San Joaquin Valley by providing an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national and international cultural activities illuminate, educate and entertain. The Gallo Center for the Arts celebrates the diversity of the San Joaquin Valley by offering an array of affordable cultural opportunities designed to appeal, and be accessible, to all.

The Center opened in September, 2007 and consists of the 440-seat Foster Family Theater, the 1,248-seat Mary Stuart Rogers Theater, the Marie Damrell Gallo Grand Lobby and a plaza serving both theaters, and the Modesto Rotary Music Garden.

As a regional non-profit performing arts center, the Gallo Center for the Arts presents internationally recognized touring artists in all disciplines, and also is home to four resident companies: Central West Ballet, Modesto Performing Arts, Modesto Symphony Orchestra and Opera Modesto. The Gallo Center for the Arts is a unique public/private partnership. Construction was funded jointly by the County of Stanislaus, which owns the facility, and contributions from more than 4,000 individuals and businesses given to a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which today operates the Center.

PATRON EVENT INFORMATION

• Emergency exits are indicated by green exit signs located above each exit. For your safety, please check for the location of the exit nearest to your seat.

• The Gallo Center for the Arts is accessible to disabled patrons. Wheelchair seating is available in both theaters. Portable wireless listening devices are available at the Coat Check room at no charge. Please inform the Ticket Office of any special needs when ordering tickets.

• Food and beverages are not allowed in the theaters. (with the exception of bottled water and beverages served in theater cups.)

• Smoking is prohibited inside the building and within 20 feet of all entrances.

• Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the Gallo Center for the Arts’ house managers.

• The use of recording equipment and the taking of photographs in Gallo Center for the Arts theaters is strictly forbidden. The Gallo Center for the Arts reserves the right to confiscate any such equipment and/or require offending customers to exit the premises.

• As a courtesy to artists and to your fellow patrons,

please turn off or silence any mobile device on your person. No texting, please!

• Restrooms are located on all three levels of the Center.

• Lost items will be held in the Coat Check room on the main level until the end of the performance. Thereafter, please contact Ticket Office at (209) 338-2100.

• All patrons MUST have a ticket to enter a performance regardless of age.

• Out of courtesy to other patrons, the Gallo Center for the Arts requests that no infants or toddlers attend any performance.

Friends Chuck Daellenbach and Gene Watts first came together in 1970 to form a brass quintet — a chamber music setting not entirely new, but never before having garnered the success and storied career Canadian Brass would achieve over the next 40 years. Initially, Gene took on the role of developing new repertoire while Chuck was the moving force in marketing, publishing, and managing the business. Three empty chairs were quickly filled and together, the group’s imagination and consummate musicianship elevated the art of the brass quintet to what it is today. Here was not only an opportunity to explore the possibilities of an all-brass chamber group but a challenge to bring the sound and the excitement of brass music to new audiences.

Masters of concert presentations, Canadian Brass has developed a uniquely engaging stage presence and rapport with audiences. Each of their concerts will show the full range from trademark Baroque and Dixieland tunes to new compositions and arrangements created especially for them –from formal classical presentation to music served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects. The hallmark of any Canadian Brass performance is entertainment, spontaneity, virtuosity and, most of all, fun – but never at the expense of the music:

Whatever the style, the music is central and performed with utmost dedication, skill, and excellence.

With a discography of over 130 albums and an extensive world-wide touring schedule, Canadian Brass is an important pioneer in bringing brass music to mass audiences everywhere. They have sold well over 2 million albums worldwide, with 1.2 million sold in the Nielsen Soundscan era alone (since 1991). They continue to score Billboard chart positions — like with their rousing recording of patriotic songs and marches, Stars & Stripes: Canadian Brass Salute America, which spent 8 weeks in the Top 25 on the Billboard Classical Chart, peaking at #2! Touring legends with an enthusiastic fan base, the Canadian Brass play to packed houses everywhere throughout the USA, Canada, Japan and Europe.

They have also toured Australia, the Middle East, the Soviet Union and South America. They were the first brass ensemble from the West to perform in the People’s Republic of China (where they returned for a 5-city tour to great acclaim in the spring of 2010 and several visits after this, including an appearance on Hunan TV for Chinese New Year) as well as the first brass group to take the main stage at the venerable Carnegie Hall. On numerous occasions Canadian Brass has been invited by the Canadian Government to play for visiting heads of

states, becoming one of Canada’s greatest resources and musical ambassadors.

Millions of television viewers have had Canadian Brass in their homes with appearances on The Tonight Show, Today and Entertainment Tonight and recently to more than 1/2 a billion viewers for Chinese New Year on China’s most popular station. They have appeared as guest artists on Evening at Pops with John Williams and the Boston Pops, Beverly Sills’ Music Around the World, numerous PBS specials, including a celebrated appearance on Sesame Street, and are frequent guests of many major symphony orchestras. Canadian Brass were the featured artists on the soundtrack to the 1988 film The Couch Trip, starring Dan Aykroyd and Walter Matthau. Consummate artists, the quintet has also created unique and interactive videos that have gained an international audience including a series of DVDs featuring the brass in concert and teaching. They are on the cutting edge of technology offering their fans multimedia airplay, downloads, YouTube videos and streaming opportunities. The varied Canadian Brass repertoire features brass standards as well as a wideranging library of original arrangements. These include the works of Renaissance and Baroque masters, Classical works,

marches, holiday favorites, ragtime, Dixieland, Latin, jazz, big band, Broadway, and Christian music as well as popular songs and standards. Having started with a very limited base, Canadian Brass has created their own musical world by transcribing, arranging, and commissioning more than 600 works, including critically acclaimed compositions from Michael Kamen, Luther Henderson, Bramwell Tovey, Don Gillis and more. They have transformed a previously neglected group of instruments with a limited repertoire into a versatile and vital ensemble that can play everything from Gabrieli to Gershwin! Canadian Brass is especially noted for their famous Holiday Concerts at Christmas time and was at the forefront of re-establishing Scott Joplin with today’s audiences through their research, arrangements and recordings of his “rags” and other works.

Education plays a key role in the story of Canadian Brass and each member is uniquely attuned to training the next generation of players. On their travels around the world, they often pause for masterclasses and are more than happy to work with students and young audiences. Canadian Brass was Chamber Quintet-in-Residence for many years at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, and has created an innovative brass summer course at the Eastman School of Music. Their support of education is also clearly viewed in their

outreach and interaction with El Sistema, the acclaimed global music education program in Venezuela.

In conjunction with the Hal Leonard Corporation, the Canadian Brass have made available their extensive library of brass music for performers of all levels as well as learning tools. Since 1998 Canadian Brass has been a recording artist at Opening Day Entertainment Group (ODEG) (distributed by IDLA) releasing over 25 CDs on the imprint to date. Opening Day is owned and run by Chuck’s wife, MB Daellenbach. Canadian Brass sheet music and recordings are available in their online store.

With four decades under their belts, Canadian Brass continues to thrill audiences around the world – and they don’t look like they are letting up anytime soon!

MEMBER BIOGRAPHIES

JOE BURGSTALLER, trumpet

Called “a superstar of the trumpet” by conductor JoAnn Falletta, Joe Burgstaller is a long-time trumpeter and arranger with Canadian Brass. Now Professor of Trumpet at Arizona State University, Joe also spent years as an international soloist and a clinician, including his Change Your Mind, Change Your Playing® seminars. Prior to ASU, he was for 11 years at The Peabody Institute, having been named in 2008 a Distinguished Visiting Artist. His formidable online presence includes the world’s most viewed version of La Virgen de la Macarena (4.6 million Youtube views) and his popular Trumpet Warmup Show, livestreamed weekly on Facebook with upwards of 25,000 viewers in 30+ countries. Joe first joined the Brass at the age of thirty. Prior to the Brass, he was a full-time soloist performing 60 solo concerts every season with his Rafael Méndez Project and was a member of the acclaimed Meridian Arts Ensemble.

MIKIO SASAKI, trumpet

Mikio Sasaki is a GRAMMY Award-winning, Juilliard and Yale-trained trumpeter. Prior to joining Canadian Brass he was a member of the St. Louis Brass Quintet and the Atlantic Brass Quintet. Raised in a family of classical, jazz, and bluegrass musicians, Sasaki is a flexible performer with the ability

to switch seamlessly between classical, jazz, and other styles of music. Concurrent with his position with the Brass, he is an Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of Oregon. Mikio hails from a “Royal Family of Trumpet” of sorts, as his father is legendary trumpet performer and pedagogue Ray Sasaki, formerly Professor of Trumpet at the University of Texas in Austin.

JEFF NELSEN, horn

The instrument formerly known as French Horn stands at the center of a brass quintet. There is not a concert performed by Canadian Brass anywhere in the world where Jeff Nelsen is not surrounded by professional Horn colleagues and former students. There is no better-informed Hornist than Jeff: he was recently President of the International Horn Society, he has played in just about all of the major symphonies in North America, performed in the music of computer games, toured with John Legend, and played in the Broadway pits in New York.

KEITH DYRDA, trombone

Dubbed the “Wayne Gretzky of the Trombone” Keith Dyrda recently returned to the Brass after originally joining the group in 2010 as a replacement for co-founder Gene Watts while obtaining his Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University. He also holds a Master of Music from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music. Dyrda contributed to the Canadian Brass’ 2011 award-winning recording Brahms On Brass.

In addition to a performance career with several leading orchestras, he also spent 5 years as a member of the All-Star Brass, a quintet that performed and recorded extensively at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. A true Canadian, he was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB and is a member of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

DR. CONRAD CHARLES

(Chuck) Daellenbach, O.C., DMA (hon.), Doctor Litterarium (hon.), Doctor of Music (hon.), PhD (paid in full), tuba

Every social organization needs a bookkeeper, manager, spokesperson, humorist, and critic, so while Canadian Brass has been looking for these people through the years, founder Chuck Daellenbach has been filling in. Growing up in a musical family tradition Chuck had to sing in choirs, play cello (only one year unfortunately), and take up the tuba to help his dad fill all the positions in his band. Since these musical activities had taken up all his time there was little left for higher math and physics –off to music school! It was at the Eastman where he learned the art of taking every opportunity that knocks, the tiger’s roar on tuba and, after forgetting to leave upon graduation, went on to earn a doctorate at age 25. It was then off to Toronto to head up the brass department (two of us) and meet Eugene Watts, forming one of the most impressive entertainment teams since the Marx Brothers.
