Each season, we are proud to bring art and community together through experiences that spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and nurture a lifelong connection to the arts. From the classroom to the stage, our programs are designed to uplift, engage, and reflect the diverse voices of the San Joaquin Valley.
Our Student Matinee Series returns with a dynamic lineup of performances for grades TK–12, offering students the opportunity to experience high-quality live theater that entertains while supporting meaningful learning connections. Whether it’s their first time in a theater or one of many visits, we hope every student leaves feeling inspired, seen, and excited to learn more.
We’re also thrilled to welcome back GCA on Tour in early 2027 with the Gallo Center premiere of Somebody Catch My Homework by Sandra Fenichel Asher. This joyful and imaginative production brings to life a collection of poems by David L. Harrison, capturing the humor, heart, and everyday adventures of school life. Full of laughter, creativity, and relatable moments, it’s a celebration of what it means to be a kid. Be sure to turn to page 22 to learn more about bringing this engaging performance to your school.

SUGAR SKULL! A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure! is a bilingual/bicultural musical adventure! Through traditional music and dance from Mexico, we learn the story of twelve-year-old Vita Flores. Vita thinks her family has gone loco planning a celebration for deceased loved ones. Why throw a party for the dead? But when a spirited candy skeleton suddenly springs to life, Vita finds herself on a magical, musical journey to unravel the true meaning of Día de Muertos. Meet Sugar Skull, a charismatic skeleton with a secret or two. With her new skeletal friend, Vita dances with ancient ancestors, sings with a sorrowful sorceress, escapes the trickster Chaneques, and even meets the famous Catrina Calavera. But can the clever young Vita gather the missing pieces needed for her family ofrenda before it’s too late?

TAIKOPROJECT’s powerful drumming unites ancient Japanese tradition with 21st century American innovation to create a riot of movement and thundering rhythm. It’s been called a tsunami of sound, but this highly charged ensemble is so much more. This show will ignite all of your senses with a spellbinding mix of music, theater and precision. Utilizing authentic instruments handcrafted in Japan, the performers weave traditional and modern forms of taiko together and share elements of their Japanese and Japanese-American culture. The group received international acclaim when they became the first American ensemble to win the prestigious Tokyo International Taiko Contest.
TAIKOPROJECT was founded in 2000 in Los Angeles, California by a group of young, emerging taiko drummers, seeking to define a modern American style of taiko. The group maintains powerful traditional taiko songs and styles while also composing new music and choreography that pushes the boundaries of taiko artistry. Over the last 26 years, they have become America’s leading professional taiko drum ensemble and a leader in the global taiko community.

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s newest production, Billy Goats Gruff and Other Tales, presents a fresh and engaging reimagining of three cherished children’s stories—Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Filled with adventure, humor, and heroism, the story follows a brave raccoon and clever mouse who are on a journey to collect treasure. Along the way, they unknowingly help the goats, bears, and pigs, preventing disaster—without any of the animals ever encountering a true villain. This imaginative retelling seamlessly interweaves three classic tales into a heartwarming adventure that celebrates friendship and courage.

Finding North tells the true story of the remarkable and powerful life of John P. Parker, a formerly enslaved man who worked hard as part of the Underground Railroad, to liberate more than four hundred enslaved people and deliver them to (relative) safety.
Intertwining through the production are stories of current immigrants who share their own heart touching, and harrowing, stories of how they came to the United States to live a better life.

Follow Peter and his friends through winter, spring, summer and fall as they romp and play, start snow ball fights and make snow angels, journey in space and under the sea, and more, all in this imaginative musical play. Using innovative shadow puppetry, The Snowy Day And Other Stories celebrates the magic and boundless possibilities of childhood and the challenges of growing up.
A classic since its publication in 1962 and winner of the Caldecott Medal, “The Snowy Day” was one of the first picture books for young people to feature an African American protagonist and is still beloved today.

In 1957, Dr. Seuss used only 200 words to write his classic tale. This much-loved children’s phenomenon was adapted for the stage in 2009 by the National Theatre of Britain. The Cat in The Hat interrupts a rainy afternoon with his unexpected visit to Sally and her brother’s cozy home. Their outspoken and outraged pet Fish is astounded and concerned, but this cat will not be deterred. He will teach us all to make our own fun with nothing but a little imagination.
A timeless tale with a twist—this energetic adaptation bursts onto the stage (and maybe into the aisles). Expect laughs, surprises, and just a bit of delightful disorder!

For over seven decades, Amalia Hernández’s Ballet Folklórico de México has positioned itself as the most emblematic folkloric dance ensemble in Mexico and around the world.
Founded in 1952 by the dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández, the Ballet Folklórico de México revolutionized the concept of traditional dance and transformed the history of Mexican dance. Today, her repertoire has become a classic, transformed and enriched with the passage of time. With more than 45 million spectators and countless recognitions, Amalia Hernández’s artistic legacy remains strong thanks to more than 120 original choreographies showcasing great technical rigor, elaborate traditional costumes and wonderful dancers. Maebelle lives in her treehouse and is an incredible hat maker. She’s been working hard ahead of the town’s annual hat contest when she befriends Binkle, a bird with a migration dilemma. He’s trying to carry too much on his flight south for the winter! As Maebelle generously offers her cherished suitcase from her own migration from Colombia, they delve into profound reflections on the significance of our possessions and memories. Through laughter and tears, Maebelle and Binkle help each other discover the beauty of remembrance and the liberating power of letting go.
A bilingual adaptation of a beloved Reading Rainbow picture book, students will love this enchanting tale celebrating friendship, cultural heritage, and the universal lessons found within the stories of our lives. Featuring a two-person cast, various styles of puppetry, environmental themes, & Colombian music.

While the Link Up curriculum focuses primarily on music performance skills, content knowledge, and creativity, students also build core capacities in English and math. Through composition, active listening, describing and analyzing standard repertoire, and a focus on the historical context of orchestral music, Link Up provides students with the opportunity to put these core capacities to use in a new domain. Specific activities throughout the curriculum also address these English and math capacities directly, encouraging reading, writing, and quantitative thinking.
Welcome to The Orchestra Sings!
Melody is one of the universal elements of music and defines the music we know and love. A great melody can express ideas and emotions, help tell a story, and bring people together through song. Composers create melodies through a combination of rhythmic patterns, sweeping contours, and expressive qualities. Through the Link Up repertoire, hands-on activities, and a culminating interactive performance with a professional orchestra, we will explore what makes a melody great.
Link Up, a program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, guides students and teachers in grades 3–5 through an exploration of orchestral repertoire through a hands-on music curriculum. Students will sing and play soprano recorder while learning basic musical concepts and play along with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra (MSO) in a culminating concert. With the MSO, over 14,000 third through fifth grade students have participated in Link Up since 2015. Since 2017, all third-grade classes of Modesto City Schools have participated in the program. Over forty other local schools have participated in Link Up, from three counties (Stanislaus, San Joaquin, and Merced). MSYO students are also selected to perform side-by-side with the MSO for the performance adding an extra tier to the educational benefits of Link Up.

No matter where or when you live, all people look at the same sun and the same moon and every culture has their own tales about them. This world premiere production features celestial myths and legends from cultures around Asia, Hawai‘i and more. Told through language, movement and music as well as a foray into scientific theory, pop culture, and a fantastical journey with the Story Keepers, this production intends to connect us all.

A show conceived by Yamoussa Bangoura, Afrique en Cirque is inspired by his daily life in Guinea. A colorful show beyond its scenery, costumes and staging, it makes any theatre vibrate with energy and represents the strength, agility and life’s joys of young Africans. The audience will see acrobats execute gravity-defying moves and human pyramids, accompanied by the contemporary sounds of live Afro-Jazz, percussion, and kora. Welcome to the universe of Kalabanté Productions and prepare for an unforgettable journey.
Kalabanté Productions was created by Yamoussa Bangoura, a multidisciplinary artist of Guinean origin. Yamoussa’s dream was the founding of a school of circus arts, and to direct his own multidisciplinary company specializing in the African arts. Kalabanté Productions is proud to be able to share their work, achievements and skills to inspire others and to assist with the humanitarian mission to help the Guinean community from which Yamoussa and many of his company members come.

Pigfoot Mary, secretly wealthy from her popular food stand, dreams of California’s skies and awaits news on a property sale that could mark her departure from Harlem. But leaving isn’t easy— her world includes Hot Fingers the Piano Player, The Garveyite, Zora Neale Hurston, and the famous Langston Hughes. Is her legacy in the food and friendships she’s built or in following a new dream?
Inspired by Lillian Harris Dean, one of Harlem’s most successful early entrepreneurs in the 1920s, this lively two actor play bursts with jazz, vibrant characters, and dances of the Harlem Renaissance. We get a taste of literature and history references throughout, and audiences will connect the past to today in a fun, poignant, and educational way.

With advice from her mother and mentors, Yeila begins her journey to find her roots, get confidence and be amazing! Travel with Yeila who visits her grandmother in Cuba to add a salsa flavor to her own hip-hop style! The audience gets to dance along in this dynamic participation play where one actress creates three generations of lively women. Journey with Yeila as she discovers the fun of her multi-cultural heritage. Havana Hop is a children’s tale of culture and confidence!

Paige Hernandez is a multidisciplinary artist. She has collaborated with the Lincoln Center and has been commissioned by the National New Play Network, the Smithsonian, The Kennedy Center, La Jolla Playhouse and the Glimmerglass Festival. Paige has also been named a “classroom hero” by The Huffington Post, a “Citizen Artist Fellow” with the Kennedy Center, and one of “Six Theatre Workers You Should Know” by American Theatre Magazine. She was most recently named one of the Top 5 Most Produced Artists for Theatre for Young Audiences.

Who better to expand your students’ horizons than a Pirate? Much like the questing citizen-scientists of old, students will explore their own rebellious curiosity for science. How is wind made? How is a sail like a wing? What are the forces behind a cannon ball’s flight? How did sailors “heave” and “ho” such heavy objects? How are navigation, time-telling, and map-making all math related? These and other mysteries are revealed and explored with immersive audience participation and memorable, grade-appropriate, oversized demonstrations.

A light-hearted, high-energy look at one eventful day in the life of fourth-grader Samantha, the new girl in town, who has lost her beloved cat, Corky. At the bus stop, Samantha meets three wacky new friends who welcome her into their class, which just happens to be studying the animal kingdom. Their search for essay topics takes them from a dinner table’s chicken thighs to the pasture of a bull not pleased to see visitors. A wayward wad of bubble gum, tuba practice and a sticky baby sister later, the busy day finally peaks with the rescue of Corky.
Featuring nineteen humorous—and sometimes serious—poems by David L. Harrison perfectly summing up what it means to be a kid going to school.
