Earthwise on course to feed more locals than ever
Earthwise Subiaco is set to help feed more locals than ever before, thanks to an expansion by food rescue organisation SecondBite. With the opening of SecondBite’s new 2,000sqm warehouse in Kewdale, an additional 20 million meals will now reach people in need across Australia - including right here in Subiaco.
For over 21 years, Earthwise Coordinator Jen Korab has led

emergency food relief efforts in the community. She says the new warehouse has made a huge difference.
“Until recently, I’d drive out to SecondBite early every Thursday to collect food and bring it back to Earthwise,” Jen explained. “Now, their team delivers directly to us each week - saving hours of travel and lifting.”
Each Thursday, around 45 people
Gifts and homewares made easy on Rokeby
You’ve probably already discovered Cavania Subiaco’s sister store in West Perth, a place that has ‘where to buy a gift for the person who has everything’ pretty much in its DNA.
Now Subi has its very own branch and just in time for the spending frenzy that’s Christmas. For newbies to the brand (which also has a branch in Geraldton), it’s a lifestyle boutique blending fashion and gifting, with art on the walls and a perfectly curated collection of local Aussie creators on the shelves.
Think homewares, clothing, stationery, and accessories, and labels like Isle of Mine, eb&ive, Holiday Trading Co, MinkPink, Staple the Label, Haven, The Shanty Corporation, and Django and Juliette’s range of shoes, handbags, jewellery, hats and scarves.

visit Earthwise for fresh fruit and vegetables, benefiting around 107 locals in total. The food is organised into a “fresh food centre” where people can choose what they need.
“This approach gives people dignity and control,” Jen said. “I’ve been in their position, and choice really matters.”
With SecondBite’s expanded capacity and reliable weekly deliveries, Earthwise can now focus even more on supporting the Subiaco community - one box of fresh food at a time.
“The new warehouse means I can head straight to Earthwise on Thursdays and get ready for the day, SecondBite arrive and unload their pallet of fresh food and collect the boxes from the previous week. I used to also have to drive back out to drop the boxes back off. It is having an incredible impact on my time and my physical wellbeing, with no more packing and unpacking of deliveries.
“The only downside is not going to the warehouse to see all the staff and volunteers every week!”

You might not be familiar with martabak but that’s all going to change thanks to the arrival of Martabak Papi in Subi. A new offering from within Ozrif Burgers in the ONE Subiaco precinct, be prepared to find your new foodie obsession. This cherished Indonesian street food delicacy - a thin, crispy pancake enveloping a savory filling of eggs, minced meat (usually beef or chicken, veggies, or sweet versions including pandan which must surely win the prize for most colourful thing to put in your mouth this year) and a unique Indonesian spice blend – is one of the unsung heroes of Asian cuisine.
You’ll also find Apam Balik (a Malaysian staple) and great coffee. Papi believes that martabak tastes better with one on the side, we’re told.
Ideal for a delicious snack on the run or go big and order enough for a crowd to share, Martabak Papi brings authentic flavours from the world’s biggest archipelago to Subiaco.

ADAM O’BRIEN
Managing Director, Porters Liquor 3/24 Cardigan Terrace, Jolimont
M y family has owned Cellarbrations Carlisle for 40 years, Cellarbrations in Vic Park for five years and Porters Jolimont for just over 12 months. We like to support the local community where we can, by helping out the local schools with donations or ice for local sporting teams or clubs for functions. We also hold tastings every Friday from 4pm to 6.30pm where wineries, distilleries or breweries come in to showcase their products.
We specialise in craft beers and do collabs with local breweries where we work with them to come up with something different and popular. We sell them instore and release them to trade too.
We also have a new shop dog named Lenny who is a nine-week-old English Staffy.
What is your perfect Christmas morning tipple as you open presents and get busy in the kitchen?
My wife and I normally crack a nice Champagne either a nice French marque like Pol Roger or Laurent-Perrier.
As you ring in the new year, which special bottle of bubbles would you like to share with your friends and family?
Vasse Felix's Idée Fixe Rosé is great value and locally made in WA.
What wine trends are you seeing in your store as 2026 rolls around?
Last summer, chilled reds were super popular as well as cocktails in a bottle – Zoncello Limoncello Spritz went bananas!
If somebody is interested in starting a wine cellar/collection, what four wines would you suggest they choose?
Something like a Barossa shiraz or a Margaret River cabernetsomething full bodied that will cellar well. Otherwise, whites like a Margaret River chardonnay, or a Clare or an Eden Valley riesling.
What sets your wine store apart from the rest?
We are family owned and run. We try to have a mix of traditional brands like your Leeuwin Estate’s chardonnays and cabernets, Howard Park’s sparkling and stills but also some cool, fun wine varietals – lighter ones that are more approachable like pinot, grenache and tempranillos. We also support local smaller boutique wineries.

CONTEMPORARY JEWELLER AND CERAMICIST, ALIDA CAPPELLETTA, IS A FAMILIAR FACE AT SUBI FARMERS MARKET - AND LEO TOO.
How did Leo come into your life - and what makes life with a miniature schnauzer special?
Leo burst into my life like a little rocket, full of energy, cheekiness, and mischief. He’s my first ever pet, and he’s made life so much more fun and fulfilling. He’s always up for a game (usually involving stolen socks), and has a knack for making every day entertaining. Mini schnauzers have such big personalities and are loyal, clever, and just the right amount of stubborn!
Does Leo join you at the market? It's dog-friendly, so does he have any little pals who he sees now and then?
Leo’s a part-time market visitor. He loves the energy, the people, the dogs, the smells but he’s definitely not the kind to chill quietly behind the stall. He gets a bit too excited! He’s got a few familiar furry faces he looks out for, though. It’s always a social outing when he tags along.
How is your life different now you have Leo to before?
Leo’s brought so much joy and routine into my life. I’m up early, walking, meeting fellow dog owners, and exploring parks I wouldn’t have gone to otherwise. He’s taught me patience, and reminded me to have fun and be present. Life’s a lot more playful with him in it.
Where do you like to take Leo in Subiaco and what is a day in the life of Leo like?
Leo enjoys visits to Wholefood Circus. He’s a peoplewatcher and self-appointed bird patrol. We often visit Lake Jualbup for our version of a “relaxing” walk ... though he tends to think the park is his territory. He can be a bit protective at first, but once he warms up, especially if treats are involved, he’s a total softie.
Has Leo inspired you artistically? Is a ceramic mini schnauzer on the horizon?
Absolutely, a ceramic schnauzer is on the to-do list! Leo’s my studio buddy. He lounges nearby while I work, always keeping one eye open to supervise. His calm presence definitely helps keep the creative flow going.

David Michie
BY Ara Jansen
David Michie’s goal is to make the world a happier and kinder place.
The Buddhist, meditator, author and soulful safari leader, believes we can all change the relationship status with our thoughts to better manage our lives.
Now David has combined this spiritual philosophy with two other great passions of his life – his birth country of Zimbabwe as the setting for his latest book The Good Karma Refuge for Elephants.
The book centres around Rob Forbes, a high-flyer from London who returns to his childhood home of Zimbabwe to care for an ailing aunt. As he spends more time with the locals and a somewhat mysterious llama, he wonders if it’s possible to live a life more centred around nature, wisdom and the African concept of ubuntu – or community.
Autobiographical in its sentiment, it’s David’s sixteenth book. After publishing books such as Buddhism for Busy People, Why Mindfulness is Better Than Chocolate, and Hurry Up and Meditate, David found there was a thirst for fictional stories which included these principles. Best known for writing the Dalai Lama’s Cat series, which take a philosophical look at life through the eyes of a feline, he’s also written a spiritual thriller series.
While the conceit of a talking cat may not resonate with everybody, The Good Karma Refuge for Elephants is a human drama which carries an undercurrent of meaning and parable as Rob Forbes goes on both a physical and spiritual journey of discovery.

“I’ve never written a book set in Africa, so it was probably time,” says David. “The land – there’s a tremendous energy there – means so much to me and it’s special for me to turn my focus to writing about Africa. I got to know these characters and enjoyed spending time in their company.”
David and his Australian wife, Koala, call Subiaco “kumusha”, which means home. They have been local residents since the late 1990s, after moving from London. They chose the suburb because of the trees, its walkability and that obvious sense of ubuntu.
“I love that you don’t have to get in your car. I’m a five-minute walk from some big parks, which is a very special thing. We know our neighbours well and some of them have been here longer than us. There’s someone on our road who is in their 70s and grew up on this street and remembers when the vet used to be a bakery and the streetlights were lit by hand. It's extraordinary to see what happens in one person’s lifetime. It creates a sense of connection to history.”
Subiaco is a perfect base for David to write while looking out to the garden and across to a large flamboyant tree, which offers wonderful shade in summer. From there, he also coordinates the annual Mindful Safaris, now in their eleventh year.
David and Koala lead visitors from all over the world to Victoria Falls for a mindful, immersive safari of meditation, bush walks, wildlife viewing, visits to local primary schools and conservation talks. In this context, David says meditation and nature are a powerful combination.
“I feel it’s about coming homepeople coming back to themselves. We have all become so caught up in our thoughts and these busy lives, we’ve lost touch with our own true nature. If we can spend some time just being, our sense of who we are goes through a profound shift.”
The Good Karma Refuge for Elephants is out in November and available from bookstores including Dymocks Subiaco, online and on audiobook.

SUBI SPRITZEVERYTHING YOU LOVE ABOUT A VACAY, WIITHOUT THE FLIGHTS

BY Matthew Mills
Those who live or work in Subiaco know that this suburb is like no other. It's a village within a city.
After all, Subi's story is an integral part of the history of Perth. It boasts an origin story of harsh obstacles, survival and success in the late 1840s as a vital part of what was then known as the Swan River Colony.
It became a working class hero and blossomed into what many would say is the jewel of Perth city life.
An uplifting, important story then –and one that needs to be treasured, preserved and retold to each new generation.
Thankfully, there's an institution to do just that – Subiaco Museum.
This little gem of historical record is tucked behind Subiaco Library, just off Rokeby Road, and, since 2 November 1975, has been telling the story of our remarkable suburb with exhibitions, artefacts, artwork, day-to-day objects and spoken-word accounts, drawing thousands through
its doors to learn and be entertained.
That's a long time, and, as savvy mathematicians out there will have already twigged, a special amount of time. Yes, this much-loved bastion of record celebrates its 50th birthday this year.
And how did it celebrate? Well, looking back wasn't enough for Subiaco Museum. This golden anniversary was all about looking forward.
An exciting series of renovations took the museum into its second halfcentury, updates that both modernised the collections and consolidated the work that has gone before.
The end result created a more flexible space and an even better experience for visitors.
The nuts and bolts include upgraded lighting, creating new interactive and engaging displays, updating signage and the introduction of audio-visual elements.
Plush new cabinets are on the way too, to replace the
lovely, but aging, units which were originally donated in the 1980s.
Visit today, and you'll see some wonderful sights. The museum’s back gallery, which is used for larger exhibitions and is home to several permanent exhibits, for instance, includes a reconstructed façade of 210 Park Street, a classic weatherboard home of the type that today defines Subiaco.
Then there are the 180 oral histories, dating back to 1983, from people who have lived, worked or volunteered in the City of Subiaco, which are currently being digitised and uploaded to CollectionsWA.
The art collection is mightily

impressive, around 200 works across all mediums, including pieces by renowned artist Shaun Tan.
The museum is also home to more than 1,500 archival records including diaries, certificates, programs, menus, posters, maps, and plans which tell the story of life in Subiaco throughout the decades.
And don't forget the ever-growing digital collection, which is constantly updated with new objects and information, bringing Subi's history to everyone online.
It's a historian's delight, made even more welcoming by the renovation, which was carried out by the very talented Creative Spaces team.
Mayor David McMullen, one of the many who flocked to the museum’s reopening in August, was heartily impressed.
At the time, he said: “These upgrades will allow museum staff
and volunteers to create more in-depth, interactive, and flexible exhibitions spanning decades of local history that people of all ages can enjoy.
“Whether you’re a regular visitor or have never been before, come and visit the museum’s new space
to gain a unique perspective of our suburb’s rich history, heritage, and stories.”
Subiaco Museum (239 Rokeby Road, Subiaco) is open Wednesday to Friday, noon to 4pm, and Saturday 10am to 2pm.

BY Sarah Schmitt
Don’t let Christmas shopping stress you out. Make a day of it in Subiaco, where great food, friendly service, and boutique discoveries come together for the perfect pre-Christmas adventure. Whether you’re shopping for her, him, the kids, or even your dog, here’s where to refuel, refresh and rediscover the joy of giving.
Start the day browsing Subiaco’s beautiful boutiques. Kivari has a stunning range of women’s clothing, while The Modern Boho offers women’s wear, accessories, and homewares. Just across the road, new arrival Cavania is the place to find lovely large canvases for the home, Australian-brand designer shoes, boots and fashion as well as unique jewellery and homewares.
Pause for morning tea at Layers Bakery or 1982 Food + Coffee for coffee and pastries before continuing up Rokeby Road. For true indulgence, explore gemstone designs at Linneys Jewellery, Ecali, or Thomas Meihofer – anything from these stores are the definition of luxury. At Kúl Kúl you’ll find bespoke jewellery that’s both modern and timeless, as well as accessories like cute bags and scarves. Emporia Store and The Green Pear have designer fashion

that you won’t find anywhere else in Subi, while iisie Fashion offers personal styling and service for the festive season.
When it’s time for lunch, settle in at Shui Subiaco. Its lush interiors and modern Asian menu make it an ideal midday escape. Afterwards, cross Roberts Road to Spoilt at Subi for lifestyle pieces, jewellery, and accessories too pretty to resist. If you

have time, treat yourself to a blow dry at Lily Lane next door. You’ll leave feeling fabulous.
If you’re shopping on a Saturday, end the day at the Subi Night Market near the train station, where live music, global street food, and gift stalls capture the festive spirit.
Otherwise, unwind over Italian food and wine at Piccolo Deli or a filled baguette from Jean-Claude Patisserie.
On Hay Street, stop in at Pobbles Cafe for a shot of coffee and a bowl of noodles before heading to Greenleaf Pharmacy, home to an impressive range of giftware including scented candles and homewares – and collectible Jellycats coming out of their ears.
Fuel your day of choosing a gift for the man in your life with a hearty

breakfast at Community Coffee Co. This smalll yet mighty espresso bar and roastery makes the best egg sandos we've tried - and their pastries are excellent too.
For the organised man, Howards
Storage World is where you’ll find smart home solutions, and nearby at District Furniture’s showroom, you’ll find stunning one-of-a-kind pieces. Shop for unique gifts at Devlin’s on Hay Street. Think Cuban cigars,

smoking jackets, and chic man bags, while Subiaco Antiques is a treasure trove of vintage pieces.
Guy foodies will love a gourmet hamper from Nosh Gourmet Gifts, and book lovers will find the next big read on the curated shelves of Subiaco Bookshop. Ready for a coffee break? Stop at Sorganic for a pick-me-up before heading to Table Culture for elegant glassware, decanters, and even stainless-steel cigar holders.
Enjoy a casual lunch at Red Chair Café, known for its fragrant laksa, Vietnamese salads, and bun bo xao. Afterwards, browse Addicted to Audio for high-end headphones and turntables, or explore Sound One for vinyl records.
End your day at Bar Amelie on the deck. A cool drink and classic pub vibes make the perfect finale. (Insider tip: the cocktails are outstanding on a hot afternoon).

Join us every Saturday from 8am to 12pm at Subi Primary School for a morning of fun!

ONCE IT’S TIME TO HANG UP THE CHEF’S WHITES FOR THE NIGHT, WHAT DO THEY CRAVE TO EAT?
GAIL WILLIAMS ASKS A COUPLE OF SUBIACO’S FAVOURITE COOKS TO SHARE THEIR TOP MUNCHIES AFTER A LONG SHIFT.
Joel Valvasori
Lulu La Delizia/Cantina di Lulu La Delizia, Forrest Walk, Subiaco
Regulars at Tastings – the unpretentious Rokeby Road cafe with a big, big heart always get a warm welcome and big smiles from owner Bill Doropoulos and his brother George as they dole out humour and affection with old school coffees and milk shakes.
But those taking up pavement seating, like former mayor, Tony Costa and Andrew Purser, can’t help but chuckle when they spot Subi’s highest profile chef and restaurant owner, Joel Valvasori, queuing for his fix of Tastings quiche.
The owner of Lulu La Delizia is also a big fan of Tastings’ bacon-and-egg roll with BBQ sauce.
That’s a huge endorsement coming from the guy who’s famous for his tagliatelli, gnochetti and his Nonna’s meatballs on polenta – gourmet fare which saw him win WA Restaurant of the Year in both the WA Good Food Guide and Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guides in 2022.
But Joel agrees that, sometimes, all you want is simple tucker that hits the spot and makes you feel like a warm hug from your grandmother.

Here are his go-to tips when you want a hearty feed:
Where is your favourite place in Subi when you have the munchies and you don’t feel like taking something from the restaurant kitchen?
FOUND Brewery is great new addition to Subi and the food has just gotten even better with Ben Ing overseeing the food program.
What is your favourite dish there?
I really enjoy the O’Connor beef steaks they’ve been doing, served with a nice simple jus, and frites. Add a little gem lettuce salad on the side to feel healthy.
What is your favourite snack to prepare at home?
I’m a big fan of cured meats and cheese. Little effort and maximum flavour.
Is there any convenience food in your pantry that would surprise us if we found out?
We always have pašteta (meat paste) which is usually a pretty heavily processed miscellaneous meat spread from Croatia.
What is your favourite fast food outlet?
Hungry Jacks for their ultimate double whopper. Can’t go past a two sauce combo in a fast food burger.

Who does the best hamburgers? FOUND does a really good cheeseburger.
Do you have a quick and easy recipe to share with readers?
My favourite quick dinner that packs a punch is pot-roast chicken drumsticks with a few cloves of garlic, a couple of sprigs of rosemary and then a splash of white wine and a nice amount of seasoning. Very simple and super flavoursome. If people could learn this as a base idea for cooking then there is so much more you can do from that as a start.

Intuition Kitchen, Rokeby Road, Subiaco
Ask Mathieu Wyatt, owner of Intuition Kitchen, what his favourite munchies are and he veers right away from the Big Kahuna burger which featured in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.
You see, years ago Wyatt cooked for Tarantino, during the Grand Lyon Film Festival and is well aware that the opening scene features a violent robbery and the robbers demanding money from all the patrons in a diner.
He has fond memories of the world’s most famous film makers but has never been tempted by the Big Kahuna, nor a diner in fact.
After making his way to Perth, Wyatt opened Intuition last November where his excellent Mediterranean food hits the spot with enthusiastic customers who often give his work a five-star rating.
Here he shares his top munchies tips:
Where do you eat when you have the munchies?
Usually somewhere relaxed - ramen, pizza, dumplings or anything that

doesn’t involve me holding a knife for once!
Is there a favourite fast food outlet in Subi that you like?
Not really “fast food,” but I’ll happily sneak off for a quick empanada at Pino’s when the craving hits.
Do chefs ever get sick of eating their own food?
Occasionally! After a long week in the kitchen, something simple like a cheese toasty or a bowl of pasta hits the spot.
Do you have a sneaky pleasure indulgence in your pantry?
Chocolate and a cheeky bottle of wine - both non-negotiable.
Is there a convenience food stocked away in your pantry that’s a go-to?
A good pâté, some good cheese and bread. It’s my lazy-night lifesaverfast, salty, and satisfying.
Quick and easy recipe to share:
A truffle butter pasta - toss hot spaghetti with butter, parmesan, and a drizzle of truffle oil. Add cracked pepper, a glass of wine, and call it a night.
BAR AMELIE’S BARTENDER, BERNICE TAN, SHOWCASED HER COCKTAIL-MAKING SKILLS TO THE MAX AT THE BARTENDER GOLD PLATE AWARDS – AND NOW IT’S YOUR TURN TO PUT HER SKILLS TO THE TEST THIS FESTIVE SEASON. BY Gabi Mills
Muddlers at the ready, WA’s best bartenders were put through their paces at the 2025 Best Bartender Gold Plate Award – and one of Subiaco’s own was right in the mix.
Subiaco’s small-bar scene is brimming with creativity, but few bartenders shake things up quite like Bernice Tan of Bar Amelie. This year, Bernice showcased her cocktail-making flair as a Top 10 Finalist in the 2025 Best Bartender Gold Plate Awards, a competition that put Western Australia’s finest to the ultimate test.
“We had to do a blind tasting, then create three classic and three signature cocktails – all in ten minutes. It was intense, but so much fun,” says Bernice.
Her standout creation was the Hong Kong Iced Tea, a refreshing, summery cocktail made with tequila, salted plum, lemon Ceylon tea, and soda water.
“It was inspired by a soft drink from where I come from called Salted Lemon Lemonade,” she explains. “It combines sourness, saltiness, and sweetness from the tequila, with freshness from the soda. It’s nostalgic and modern at the same time.”
From Bubble Tea to Bar Star Bernice’s journey to the cocktail shaker wasn’t straightforward.
“To be honest, I never thought

I’d be working in hospitality,” she admits. “It’s a physically and mentally demanding job. But somehow, it’s become a career I truly love.”
She began as a kitchen hand and waitress before working her way up.
“After a year or two, I wanted a new challenge, so I started learning how to make drinks – not even imagining I’d one day be called a mixologist.”
Her big break came at Lucky Chan’s, where she spent six months as a barback before earning the chance to step behind the bar.
“Hard work really does pay off,” she says. “Adam Keane, my mentor and Lucky Chan’s former owner, taught me everything. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his encouragement and guidance.”
From crafting bubble tea cocktails to creating award-worthy originals, Bernice’s rise has been powered by curiosity and perseverance, and her creativity is thriving under the mentorship of owner Kat Dehavilland, who has introduced her to a new passion – wine.
“As much as I love cocktails, I’ve been focusing on wines too. Kat gives us so many opportunities to learn, and that’s my next challenge.”
Bernice believes the future of hospitality lies not in chasing trends, but in human connection.
“Trends come and go,” she says. “The real focus should be on quality of service. People come for an experience - for warmth, personality, and consistency. That’s what keeps them coming back.”
And it’s that sense of connection that makes Bar Amelie feel like home.
“We’re like a family,” Bernice smiles. “There are genuine smiles every time I walk in, even off shift. Our local customers are amazing - supportive, chatty, and they even remember our names.”
As for her favourite drink? “A gin dirty martini – simple, clean, and savoury.”
With talent, humility, and a dash of salted lemon charm, Bernice is redefining what it means to be a mixologist in Subiaco. So this festive season, pull up a stool at Bar Amelie –and let her mix you something special.

The little slice of France in Shenton Park is going great guns, one year after Marie Marsaa and Thomas Desrue took over the corner venue. So much so, in fact, that Aperol spritz on the terrace at sunset has become something of a ritual for those in the know.
“Our biggest win has been building a real community around Mistelle, we’ve been so touched by the loyalty of our guests,” Marie says. “We love sharing a piece of ourselves, our culture, our passion, and our love for food and wine and see it touch people.”
So, one year in, what dish has won the locals hearts?
“The crème brulée has become a real signature,” Marie says. “People tell us it’s the best they’ve ever had, which is such a compliment and makes us so proud, and on the savoury side the steak beef rump has definitely become a favourite. Everyone truly loves Thomas’s food, which makes us so happy. It’s a big part of why people keep coming back.”
Beyond the exquisite French cuisine, the small touches of Mistelle play a large role in winning the hearts of locals and beyond. The flowers in the courtyard provide a riot of colour thanks to Marie’s careful tending, making the bistro’s exterior reminiscent of a French main street. To finish the meal, the French digestifs being wheeled up en masse on the vintage drinks trolley is an

absolute treat.
“Guests really enjoy our housemade digestifs, like the fig and citronelle liqueurs, and it’s lovely to see them appreciated,” Marie says.
As they enter their second year on Nicholson Road, Thomas, Marie and the French team are developing more homegrown specialities for the menu (food and drinks) in a way that showcases fresh local produce. For summer, the outdoor space will be a focus with Perth warm nights
drawing guests out to the terrace.
“Mistelle will keep evolving this summer, we’re bringing more life to the terrace with oysters, live music and that lovely French spirit – we’re so looking forward to celebrating summer with our guests,” Marie says, smiling ear to ear.
“We put so much of our heart into Mistelle and the best part is seeing guests leave happy with full bellies, big smiles and that feeling of connection – that’s what it’s all about for us.”

Let’s face it. We’ve all endured very average picnics over the journey of our lives. From school day’s out with terrible lunch boxes, to sandwiches deconstructing during the journey from fridge to blanket. Soggy crisps. Warm wine. Boiled eggs staring up at you from daggy containers. I won’t go on but you get the picture.
The vision of a perfect picnic may have met its height in the Golden Age when staff would set up your picnic spread under a shady tree, with beautiful dining roomlevel accessories and none of the inconvenience of having to pack up all the left overs once the sun went down. The Impressionists were also responsible for an unobtainable level of picnic idealism – particularly Édouard Manet and his saucy Le Dejeuner sur l’herbe which would raise a few eyebrows if recreated around Lake Jualbup.
So let’s put all that to one side and create our own dreamy picnic, starting with a gorgeous throw blanket from Threads of Africa (Dianne has a stall at Subi Farmers Market), or Spoilt at Subi, and then build the vibe from the base, up. Bring some Ecology napkins (Dallimores) and your linen sets
the scene.
Next up, create a menu which includes something sweet, something savoury, a salad perhaps and some breads, dips and pâtés. Pack a ready-to-serve spritz (like Limoncello Spritz from Porters Liquor) or try a bottle of pink fizz, topped up with fresh fruits from Golden Choice or MCQ, and mint sprigs, and soda water.
Simon Johnson Providore and Farmer Jack’s are well-stocked with tasty picnic staples, and, with a little creative flair, you can transform even a simple round of sandwiches into a work of art (top tip: it’s how you cut the bread. Think fingers rather than triangles).
Don’t forget that the Australian wildlife sometimes turns up to spoil the party – so invest in a netted bamboo server (Dallimores) – no flies will dare to ruin our day with this piece of kit. Gorgeous picnic ware is also the order of the day (and again Dallimores or Table Culture are your go-to for big bowls, serving cutlery, plates and tumblers). A pretty Ecology ruffle pink cake stand elevates your home bakes to something out of a Nigella dreamscape while a selection of unusual dressing ingredients
transforms a simple watermelon, red onion and feta salad from ho hum to hurrray.
Mini homemade quiches in little ceramic fluted bases tick the box –packed with beetroot and asparagus and other seasonal veggies. A homemade focaccia, studded with rosemary and rich with olive oil, travels well and is a great base for spreads and pâtés.
If you have the time and inclination, make a cake in advance – try our rhubarb teacake for a spin on a traditional classic – or if you’re running short of time, head to Layers Bakery or The Baking Corner for a box of your favourite patisserie.
Baskets and eskis from Nosh Gourmet Gifts will ensure you’ve got the right receptacles to store your carefully curated feast and drinks. We love their pale pink vintage-style eski to keep things cool when the temperatures rise. Source some vintage cutlery from local charity stores or chuck some bamboo disposables in your basket. Picnics don’t need to break new ground or reinvent the wheel but with a few well-chosen star components, they’ll confirm your status as picnic royalty.

INGREDIENTS
(Makes six individual quiches)
2 sheets frozen shortcrust pastry, thawed
250g pkt baby beetroot, thickly sliced
1 bunch asparagus, ends trimmed, cut into 5cm pieces
100g Danish feta, crumbled
2 tbs chopped dill
8 eggs, lightly whisked
1 cup (250ml) thickened cream
Dill sprigs, to serve
1. Preheat oven to 200°C. For individual quiches, line tins or rammekins with pastry. Fill with pastry weights, prick the bases and bake for 12 mins or until light golden. Reduce oven to 160°C.
2. Place the beetroot, asparagus, feta and chopped dill in the base of the pastry cases. Whisk egg and cream together, season and pour into the pastry cases. Sprinkle with grated cheddar and bake for 25-30 mins or until the egg mixture is just set. Sprinkle with dill sprigs to serve.

INGREDIENTS (Serves 4)
80g unsalted butter
300g plain flour
380g brown sugar
2 eggs
a few drops of vanilla essence
1 tsp salt
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
grated zest of 1 lemon
1 cup sour cream
400g rhubarb (cut into 1 cm pieces)
¼ cup brown sugar (for the topping)
1 tsp ground cinnamon (for the topping)
METHOD
1. Mix together the butter and sugar
2. Add the eggs and vanilla
3. Sift together the flour, salt, bicarb and cinnamon then add to the food processor and pulse a few times to combine
4. Add the lemon zest and sour cream then transfer to a large bowl and stir in the rhubarb
5. Pour into a 24 cm round tin that has been greased and lined with paper
6. Mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle evenly over the top of the cake
7. Bake at 180 degrees celsius for one and a quarter hours or until a skewer inserted comes out clean.
INGREDIENTS (Makes 24)
1 large chicken breast
1 medium cucumber
2 tsp salt
½ loaf white bread
½ loaf wholemeal bread
½ red onion, finely chopped
3 tbsp rich mayonnaise
2 tsp horseradish sauce
METHOD
1. Slice the chicken breast into small pieces. In a small saucepan, cover with water, bring to the boil and simmer until cooked through. Remove from heat, refresh in cold water and chop finely.
2. In a bowl, combine chopped chicken breast, chopped onion, mayonnaise, and horseradish sauce. Mix to combine and season to taste.
3. Chop cucumbers into small pieces. Place in a sieve and cover with salt. Set over a bowl for 15-20 mins to allow some moisture to drain from the cucmbers. Rinse.
4. Divide the wholemeal and white bread slices into sets of three so that they are alternating colours. Butter one side of each of the outside slices, and both sides of the inside slice. Build sandwiches with chicken on one layer and cucumber on the other.
5. Using a bread knife, slice off all of the crusts. Refrigerate until sandwiches are firm before slicing them into three fingers.

CREATING YOUR OWN PICNIC DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN A SUPERMARKET SANDWICH AND BAG OF CHIPS. WITH SO MUCH AMAZING PRODUCE ON OUR DOORSTEP, WHY NOT GO ALL-IN ON PICNIC PERFECTION?
BY Sarah Schmitt

The sun is finally shining again, and there’s no better way to spend a lazy afternoon in this weather than sprawled on a picnic blanket beneath shady trees, toes buried in soft grass, catching up with friends and family, or maybe just reading a really good book.
Here are some great ideas to elevate your alfresco gatherings with thoughtfully curated essentials from Subiaco's finest markets and boutiques.

So, let’s get organised for picnic season. You’ll need a picnic blanket, and we love the ones at Threads of Africa (look for the one with the ‘Mungo’ embossed leather strap), located at Subi Farmers Market, with soft pastel designs that add a touch of luxury. Close by, Tribal Village has stunning handwoven baskets, perfect for carrying your supplies.

You’ll need sturdy food storage containers, and our recommendations are for a set of lightweight, snap-tight nesting bowls. At Table Culture you’ll find sets of four in beautiful soft-colour palettes, ideal for packing up picnic bites. Dallimores Homewares also stocks beautiful picnic plates, along with unbreakable drinkware, cutlery and gorgeous paper napkins, while Nosh Gourmet Gifts have the most
beautiful pale pink or sage green vintage-style eskis – who says you have to compromise style when you’re dining, sur l’herbe?
Don’t forget to pack your sunsmart essentials as well. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, perhaps a UV umbrella or sandals from Cavania or Dimario Italian Shoes. Pick up travel wine glasses and a wine cooler by Huski, and don’t leave without a Kollab cooler bag from Spoilt By
Subi. Their bright designs make every picnic feel like a celebration. As a suggestion, if picnicking with young children, pack individual lunch boxes in their own special cooler bags to avoid arguments. And, if you’re after more child-themed supplies, find a selection of children’s picnic bags, cosy blankets, and gifts at Plane Tree Farm. Finally, being summer and sitting outside, you’ll need to keep cool. Take a look at the range of flowing

IF PICNICKING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN, PACK INDIVIDUAL LUNCH BOXES TO AVOID ARGUMENTS.

summer midi and mini dresses at Chachi, or a linen ensemble from The Modern Boho. For the male picnicker in your life, check out the Summer Vacation Edit range at Flannel
You won’t struggle to eat like kings and queens in Subiaco - especially when it comes to fresh produce and locally made products. Back at Subi Farmers Market, pick up a selection of bites, from fresh sourdough at Wild Bakery to fresh picked produce for crudités. Complement your selection with cured meats from EuroChef, and condiments from Butler’s Essentials, or plan ahead and grab Aurelio’s pizza bases to make your own pizza.
If bakery bites are your jam, head to Layers Bakery in Subi Square and grab some of their iconic Brulée Cubes for a special treat. Sweeten the experience further with pastries from The Baking Corner or Crumbs Patisserie. If you’re celebrating an occasion, then Noah’s Cakery at Subi Farmers Market makes stunning creations, while Brownie Brothers make the BEST brownies in the West (look out for them at Subi Night Market). Pick up some bottles of fresh cold pressed juice from La Vida Vegan. I’d say that Simon Johnson Providore is a must-visit spot too for an extra gourmet picnic. Here you’ll find everything from caviar to artisanal cheese, crackers and pate, perfect for a luxe picnic basket, while just down the street, Nosh offers ready-made hampers that include their stunning handmade chocolates.

Casa del Dolce offer bespoke catering for a celebration-style picnic and when time is short and you only have a quick moment to catch up, consider a coffee-date picnic. Grab takeaway coffee from one of Subiaco’s cafés or bring your own in a colourful travel mug from The Clean Food Store, and swing by Louis Boeglin Patisserie for delicious sweet treats or a hot chocolate. For the rest of the week, you can grab a slice of pizza from Delisio or a scoop or two of ice cream from Whisk Creamery.
Now you’ve sorted out your picnic essentials, and you have the food planned, it’s time for drinks. James from Prestige Liquor in Subiaco

Village has rounded up some popular summertime drinks that would be perfect to bring along with you.
The Brown Brothers Yuzu Lemon Prosecco NV is crisp, citrusy and elegant and the perfect celebratory drink. For a lovely, relaxed summer vibe, pair your picnic with a chilled bottle of rosé or an Aperol and Soda Spritz. For those who enjoy the ease of a premix, Running with Thieves Grapefruit Gin & Soda is a refreshing choice.
Location, location, location
There is no shortage of stunning green spaces to enjoy your picnic, so whatever the occasion, Subiaco has a beautiful destination offering the perfect backdrop. Subiaco Common is an idyllic park with a lovely lake

and gentle birdsong, while at Mabel Talbot Park, you can wander the lake while you catch up with friends.
If you’re planning on hosting a children’s picnic, perhaps as a birthday celebration, the Theatre Gardens is a dream spot to host your party. There is plenty of space, trees for shade, a playground, and Bille Bob, a giant sculpture by Swedish artist Thomas Dambo for extra fun.
If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a pop-up coffee and sweet treats spot by Crumbs Patisserie under the Subiaco Arts Centre. Stock up on outdoor games from Target, from Totem Tennis to giant Wooden Tower sets. However you like to enjoy the warmer months, the inspiration for your perfect picnic is right here in Subiaco. With unique shops, markets, boutiques to stunning parklands to relax in, we’re truly spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing a picnic spot for all ages.

OUR LOCAL EXPERTS SPILL THE TEA ON WHAT’S MAKING BRIDAL FASHION HEADLINES AS WE DIVE HEADFIRST INTO WEDDING SEASON.
BY Lisa O'Neill

Subiaco is fast becoming a bridal fashion destination with a wide selection of boutiques ready to dress you for the best day of your life. Two of them, Dion for Brides and Archela Bridal are run by Lisa Selman, who knows exactly what Perth brides want and scours the globe to ensure she has the best gowns for them.
“I travel nationally and internationally to see the latest collections,” Lisa shares. “Barcelona has a huge annual bridal fashion week which I go to every year. It's a great chance to see European designers showing there.”
While Lisa loves the thrill of top designers unveiling their latest collections, she says trends are much

steadier in bridal fashions and roll through in longer and bigger waves than regular fashion.

“Bridal trends are unlike fast fashion where you see eight collections released each year, where you walk into a store and six weeks later there’s a whole new collection featured,” Lisa explains.
“Some of our bestsellers might be three, four or even five years old because they’re classic and elegant – and we see big cyclical trends, like I got married in the early 2000s and I’m starting to see similar gowns in the last two years to the ones I tried on!”
While there’s less outrageous leaps in fashion for brides, Lisa says there are certain features that are running hot and displayed in plentiful

TIME TO SHINE l-r: 18ct white gold marquise & round diamond ring, and 18ct gold alternating diamond ring, POA, Ecali; 18ct yellow and white gold diamond engagement ring, POA, Thomas Meihofer.
variations at her stores.
“The basque waist is everywhere at the moment and probably has been for 18 months,” Lisa says. “It’s been strongly requested by brides so I’m expecting it will be in WA for a lot longer - although the new waistline is the dropped waist, and the straightacross waist is coming.
“With necklines, it used to be sweetheart but we’ve seen the cateye with peaks at the edge become really prominent and the straight

neckline is the look of the moment.”
To round out the gown shapes, Lisa says volume is back with ‘tonnes of tulle’ building up the skirt. Onto material, white is the predictable shade for the Perth bride’s big day.
“Colour comes in and out, but we know Perth and tend to order everything in the ivory version,” Lisa says. “There are some pastel gowns coming in now from the April show, we might see some pink in Perth but our brides don’t embrace colour like they do in other regions. But there’s ways to bring in colour without being crazy about it, such as coloured flowers in a veil.”
For brides who can’t decide on which look, the transformative dress is also a hit. Rather than buy two (or more) dresses, there are multi-piece gowns that provide brides with options.
“The four-piece gown is doing really well right now, you have a
skirt and top which you wear as one look, there’s a piece to go around the middle to create a ruching look and a piece to go as a tail which is tucked in as a train feature or side drape,” Lisa explains. “You can add a fifth option too and transform the dress into a mini – this wasn’t available when I was married.”
While trends play a role in influencing your final choice, Lisa says wedding dress choice comes down to emotions and feeling like your true self.
“You can’t explain why one dress will make you feel amazing versus another one, and we always tell our brides to let the stylist show you a wildcard – I was a wildcard bride!”
Lisa says. “You want the emotional connection with your dress and I get goosebumps every time I see a bride connect with theirs, it still brings on tingles and joy for me.”
Beyond the dress, your bridal look will become more your own as you layer it with your jewellery choice. Dion for Brides is currently collaborating with Willie Creek Pearls, and pearls are another wedding trend that is everlasting.
“Pearls have long been synonymous with bridal elegance,” Willie Creek Pearls’ Maddie Swan says. “Their radiant lustre complements a wide array of gown styles - the classic Australian South Sea cultured pearl strand in a princess length has been a timeless bridal favourite.”
However, Maddie says trends still enter the bridal jewellery arena and they’re seeing a resurgence of shorter, layered styles coming back into fashion.
“Vivienne Westwood’s iconic multistrand pearl necklace featuring her signature orb – a bold, avant-garde piece – helped reignite the bridal world’s passion for opulent, layering designs,’ Maddie says.
“We’re also seeing a rise in the popularity of huggie-style earrings, often accented with diamonds for an added touch of sparkle. This pairing not only photographs beautifully but also brings a contemporary twist to the classic bridal pearl stud - striking the perfect balance between timeless romance and modern sophistication.”
Looking into the crystal ball, Maddie says Willie Creek is anticipating Keshi pearls will become a look for future brides with their individual and organic beauty.
“Their irregular shapes make them ideal for brides seeking jewellery that feels truly unique and special, offering a free-spirited and fluid alternative to traditional pearl styles,” Maddie says.
In the hair and makeup world, Circles of Hair's stylist Ambrose Bell says this year has seen some big shifts in bridal trends.
“We usually see beachy looks in WA with long hair blowing in the wind but now, they’re going for a

more Parisienne bride look,” Ambrose says. “With the hair, everyone is going very classic, the textured and effortless look is out the window.”
Ambrose says Selena Gomez recent wedding has been a style inspiration too, with her bob styled to look very ‘Marilyn Monroe’.
“It’s crazy, we’ve gone from long hair out and up looks to shorter and longer bobs down,” Ambrose says. “I’ve also done some beautiful half up looks that are very soft, but still very put together and for any long hair, the brides are going for a ballerina bun which is completely sleek, no hair out at the front, which sits really well throughout the wedding and stays looking ‘done’.”
Another hair trend which keeps Ambrose busy is changing their hair styles halfway through the big day.
“They’ll have it out for the ceremony and then I’ll hang around

and put it up before the reception, so it’s out of the way while they party,” Ambrose explains.
Make up trends have been steadier, with glowing skin reigning supreme and makeup that makes the bride look like elevated versions of themselves.
“Really nice skin that photographs well is top of the bride’s list and we have some new products like contour
cream blush we paint under the foundation that achieves a really nice glow,” Ambrose says. “Blush is very important to do well, without it and you’ll look like a ghost in your photos!”
On the eyes, Ambrose says a look that carries well from day to night is key, with no heavy colours and the big, then little, then big again eyebrows are slimming down again.
“Bronzed eyes, but nothing too
heavy like a smoky eye with a nude shade on the inner corner,” Ambrose says. “And eyebrows, a lot of the ladies are having a smaller eyebrow again although we’ve learnt from the trauma of our past and they’re doing them so much better now – natural colours, smaller and a little fluffed out.”
Another critical wedding makeup to get right is the lip, which Ambrose advises his brides to be mindful on the colour choice.
“A nude or slightly pink lip and a gloss, don’t go for a bold lip on your wedding day,” Ambrose says. “I don’t think a bold lip is a good choice because it can overstate everything else, like your hair and your dress –just go for nice, glossy and kissable lips! Save the red lip for your Hens, that’s where you can have some fun with your makeup.”
MEET the FOUNDER
Britt Mason

Juliet Studio, 177 Rokeby Road | Visit julietstudio.com.au
In the heart of Subiaco, a new kind of bridal experience is unfolding, just in time for wedding season.
Juliet Studio was born from a love of business and beauty - and from a clear vision by its founder to fill a longoverlooked gap in the bridal world.
“I wanted to create a space that feels calm, modern, and intentional - a reflection of today’s understated bride,” says founder Britt Mason.
That vision has translated into a serene, light-filled studio where every gown tells a story of craftsmanship and quiet luxury.
Each piece at Juliet Studio is sourced from a carefully curated selection of Australian designersincluding Prea James, L’eto, and Lola Varma - celebrated for their artistry and commitment to slow, considered production.
Britt also hints at expanding the
collection soon, with international names discovered at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week.
The 2026 Subiaco bride, she says, is leaning towards refined simplicity: clean lines, luxurious silks, and subtle detailing that feels both effortless and deeply personal.
“The brides who visit my studio are choosing something minimal and accessorising by swapping out veils, for neck scarves, shawls and detailed florals.
“There’s a real appreciation now for quality and the freedom to customise.”
At Juliet Studio, every appointment is private and personal.
“It’s about discovering a gown that feels like an extension of yourself, not a costume,” says Britt.
“We guide, never overwhelm - with a glass of bubbles, of course.”
After curating more than 50 destination weddings across the globe, she’s now happily grounded in Perth.
“I have been to most of the dreamier wedding destinations in the world but I got a little weary and decided to focus on Juliet rather than travelling,” she admits.
However, one destination above all was a favourite – and fortunately it’s possible to enjoy a taste of that country right here in Subiaco.
“Sicily will always have my heart,” she admits, “but these days, my favourite spot is Joel’s new Cantina next to Lulu’s - a Campari spritz and anchovy toast hits the spot every time.”
Juliet Studio isn’t just redefining bridal elegance - it’s creating space for women to embrace modern romance, on their own terms.

LUKE SCARLETT | Subiaco Resident.
energy that keeps me inspired every day.
What I love most is the variety at my doorstep. You can start your day with a coffee from one of the many local cafés (there’s something about the way Subi does coffee that just feels right), take a walk through the leafy backstreets or Kings Park just nearby, and then spend the evening enjoying a meal with friends at one of the local favourites.
A couple of places I always find myself going back to:
Living and working in Subiaco has always felt like the perfect balance between community and convenience. There’s a warmth to the suburb that makes it feel more like a neighbourhood than just a place to pass through. Whether it’s the tree-lined streets, the mix of heritage and modern architecture, or simply the buzz of people out enjoying themselves, Subi has an
• Juanita’s – a casual, welcoming spot with great wine and share plates. It’s perfect for a relaxed evening where you just want to settle in and enjoy good company.
• Lulu La Delizia – hands down one of the best for fresh, handmade pasta and that cosy Italian feel. It’s a little gem that never disappoints.
• Jean-Claude Patisserie –
a Subiaco institution where the smell of fresh pastries and bread makes it impossible to leave emptyhanded. It’s the kind of place that feels like a treat every time you visit. For downtime, I love Mueller Park. It’s a beautiful open space that really brings the community together - from kids running around to weekend picnics and people just enjoying the fresh air. It’s these spaces that give Subi its character, reminding you that you’re part of something connected.
Subiaco is more than just where I live and work - it’s a lifestyle. It’s the ability to step outside and feel part of a community, where familiar faces become friends and local businesses feel like an extension of home. That’s what makes Subi special for me.

THESE UNCONVENTIONAL GEMS DOTTED THROUGHOUT SUBIACO ARE A TREAT TO UNCOVER. LET US INTRODUCE YOU TO THE QUIRKIEST BUSINESSES IN THE ‘HOOD.
BY Lisa O'Neill

Subiaco has always been laced with unique businesses, from the days of the much-loved Pavilion Markets, the 24-hour Oriole Café and Chokeby Road to now. We’re spoilt for choice with entrepreneurs lining our streets with one-of-a-kind boutiques, restaurants so enticing people drive for miles to dine there and a sauna that offers hangoverfree Sunday sessions (Melt, 8am to 10am Sundays). We also have an assortment of businesses so full of character and whimsy, we’ve created a Subiaco ‘business with a twist’ list.
Caroline’s Pet Kitchen Shop 1/420 Hay Street
Is your pet your favourite family member? Same. So hot foot it to Caroline Sheng’s store which is
entirely dedicated to treating your pooch or kitty cat (she’s also been approached by bird mums and dads, so watch this space for bird treats). Like a lolly shop for pets, there’s rows upon rows of flavour, size and chew options to have Fido sitting, staying and rolling over like a show dog. Caroline has sourced her edible treats and toys from all the best producers globally, including local business Freeze Dry Australia, and brands from New Zealand, Korea, Japan and China. For a special occasion, Caroline also creates birthday cakes that are so fancy to look at, you’ll have to remind yourself they’re pure kangaroo meat flavour before cutting yourself a slice. A further layer of quirky exists in Caroline’s Instagram account

where she showcases her cakes and her own cat enjoying the shop’s delicacies (see @perth petkitchen).
Annabelle’s Antiques and Collectables
54 Nicholson Road
There aren’t many 84-year-olds running their own business, but Annabelle carries on working in her antiques and collectables store purely for the sheer delight of her work. For 30 years, Annabelle has been operating from her pretty shop on Nicholson Road shop, and she’s been a collector since she was 17. Dripping in quaint and quirky (just peer through the front window at the antique dolls peering straight back), Annabelle’s boutique is a treasure chest with a charming variety of wares.
Beyond the dolls, you’ll find jewellery, glassware, beads and water colour paintings for sale here and if you’re lucky, an enthusiastic greeting from Anna the silky terrier. Annabelle’s is only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10.30am until 3pm, so pop a visit into your calendar for the collector in your life.

La Vida Vegan
60 Coghlan Road
Subiaco houses Perth’s only 100 per cent vegan grocery store and it’s a dreamy experience for those who eat plant-based food. La Vida Vegan’s fridge section has countless dairyfree cheeses and plant-based protein options while dry shelves are heaving with pantry and bulk food products with a variety extending far beyond regular supermarkets (some cater to gluten-free dietary requirements, too). The store has a small fashion section, largely dominated by the organic bamboo clothing brand Boody, and beauty products like vegan collagen eye masks. If all the shopping makes you hungry, the bakery section is made up of delights such as red velvet cupcakes with cinnamon cashew cream frosting and peanut butter chocolate fudge brownies. It’s a grocery store experience that you leave feeling like a better person, with all its products guaranteed to be cruelty free and sustainable.

Blacklist Coffee
Concept Store
439D Hay Street
We are spoilt for choice in Subiaco for perfectly-made coffees, this is true. However, the pared back simplicity of Blacklist insists its patrons pay attention to the mastery put into every cup here. There are no newspapers strewn across tables and in a shocking state of affairs during my visit, nobody in Blacklist even glanced at their phone. Instead,
guests were quietly conversing while experiencing every mouthful of their beverage. When I sipped my Blacklist Monty, I too might have experienced a special frisson. The strong and icy cold brew was perfectly paired with its frothy blanket of vanilla cream, dusted with dark chocolate, orange zest and nutmeg.
Blacklist strays from the usual café model, it’s more like a winery’s cellar door and encourages coffee tasting sessions where they guide
you through a selection of blends. However, if you’re in the mood for just one and it’s a Perth scorcher, sit down for an icy ‘Monty’ and focus all your senses on it.
3/144 Rokeby Road
Can you even call yourself a Subiaco resident if you haven’t done a mad dash to Lucy in Disguise for a last minute but totally fabulous outfit for a dress up party? Far from a generic costume hire, this retro boutique allows you to rummage back through the decades to achieve a super chic outfit from the 1920s and beyond (the selection of flapper dresses is particularly impressive).
It’s also once of Subiaco’s original second-hand fashion boutiques and has all sorts of vintage gems to purchase including dresses, jackets, boots and handbags.

What inspired you to bring the Sensory Rhymetime sessions to Subiaco Library?
Sensorium Theatre partners with libraries to bring sensory storytelling to children with additional access needs and provide customised programs and mentoring for staff. Last year, we partnered with Subiaco Library to deliver a monthly six-month series, building strong connections with local families and equipping staff to create their own multi-sensory rhyme time sessions.
How do these sessions help little ones of all abilities connect with songs and stories?
Our sessions are designed for children with additional needs and use rhythm, repetition, music, movement and sensory elements so each child can connect with the story. They celebrate movement and exploration, creating an inclusive environment where every child can engage in their own unique way.
For families thinking about coming along – what kind of sensory experiences can they expect?
Sensory Rhymetime sessions spark all the senses, with things to touch, taste, smell, hear and see, introduced slowly so children can engage at their own pace. Adults can expect to get involved by modelling play and supporting their children’s engagement in a safe, welcoming environment.
Do you have tips for parents or carers on bringing the magic of sensory play home?
• Use the senses: Think about ways to include smell (like herbs or spices), touch (like soft fabrics or water play), sight (lights, colours), sound (instruments or simple rhythms), and even taste (safe food play) into your daily play.
• Follow your child’s lead: Notice what captures their attention — is it movement, music?
• Be present: The most magical part
Monthly on Mondays, Subiaco Library facilitates a Sensory Rhymetime designed for children with disability.
Families are invited to come along, join in the fun, and experience a magical, multi-sensory approach to songs and stories. It’s a beautiful way to connect, play, and spark little imaginations right in the heart of Subiaco.

of sensory play is the connection it creates between you and your child. Sit with them, explore together, and follow their curiosity!
• Keep it simple: A scarf, a spoon, a song — these everyday items can become powerful sensory tools.
• Above all, remember there’s no “right” way to play. Just being in the moment, engaging with your child’s world, is where the magic happens!

This sporting club from Canada might just be the missing piece in the Perth sporting scene puzzle and it’s coming to Subi. If you’re sick of getting bulldozed in footy and netball with whistle-happy umpires barking orders at you, jump into an Urban Rec league where fun vibes reign supreme. This social sporting club is focused on an ‘inclusive and casual environment’ where beginners are coached and encouraged by the friendly referees. Choose from traditional sports netball and basketball, the more recent phenomenon of pickleball, or a multisport league
that rotates European handball, futsal, volleyball, dodgeball and pickleball. Rope in some likeminded mates to make a team or sign up solo and the Urban Rec team will sort you out for the 10-week season. Aside from the weekly game, Urban Rec organises social outings at local businesses so players can celebrate epic goals/baskets/ rallies over a well-earned drink. Multisport and pickleball leagues are on Mondays at Perth Modern School, netball is at Matthews Netball Centre on Thursdays and basketball is at Bob Hawke College on Mondays. Visit urbanrec.com.au.

IF YOU’RE PLANNING TO HOST A SOIRÉE THIS SUMMER, LEAN ON SOME SUBIACO FAVOURITES TO ENJOY THE WHOLE THING AS MUCH AS YOUR GUESTS WILL.
BY Lisa O'Neill
Organising a shindig is no small feat, but it can be a whole lot of fun with the right suppliers and support network. Fortunately for Subi locals, herein exists a company that knows all there is to know about hosting an event to remember for all the right reasons.
Perth Party Hire has been around since 1958, although in the early days it was known as Hendie’s Hire Service after its original owner, according to current co-owner Michael Fish.
“Mr Hendrix started Hendie’s hire Service in 1958 on Rokeby Road near the bike shop. He ran it with his daughters who called him Old Man
Hendie,” Michael says. “I was the fifth owner with my father-in-law when I bought it in 1988 and by that time, it had moved to Nicholson Road.”
After Michael’s father-in-law retired, he merged forces with Mal Thomas from Claremont Party Hire in 2001 and these two very passionate humans remain doing what they love to this day.
“Over 30 years in the business and I still enjoy coming to work every day,” Michael says. “If you don’t have a clue about a big event, the team here understands all the logistics and provides great advice, and you get everything delivered and picked up by the same company.”
Between Michael and Mal, they’ve helped create just about any event you can imagine from birthdays to weddings, business functions to election day gigs. In 2013, Hendie’s didn’t make sense anymore so they
rebranded to what it is today.
“We bought the domain name Perth Party Hire and shot up to the top of google search!” Michael says, laughing. “In the old days, it was all very local but because of our central location, we get a lot of interest from far and wide.”
With thousands of trestle tables and chairs in their warehouses (the Nicholson Road location is their showroom) amongst small items like glassware to large such as fridges and portable ovens, Perth Party Hire has everything you’ll need to cater for the masses.
To speak with Michael, Mal and the rest of the friendly team, visit 103 Nicholson Road, Shenton Park or call (08) 9382 2088.
If it’s the thought of cooking for a crowd that’s keeping you up at night, Subiaco also houses plenty of catering businesses to lighten the load.
Cupid Catering
14C Hood Street, Subiaco
Cupid Catering Owner Amanda

Lummis knows good food and how to create it for the masses. Her career began as a teenager working in her family-owned Fast Eddy’s in the city (for the uninitiated, an iconic restaurant that was a must-do before concerts and big sporting matches at RAC Arena) and evolved to cooking for royalty, international heads of state and more at many large and intimate private functions. Now, Subiaco hosts her catering business so you can serve her delicious

creations to your own cast of ‘royal’ guests, from platters and light bites to plated meals.
Casa del Dolce
85 Rokeby Road, Subiaco Literally named the 'house of sweets', there's more to this little Italian addition to Rokeby Road than sugar fans. Teresa Strangio may have established a devoted fan base for her cannoli but she's also a dab hand at creating gorgeous bespoke special occasion cakes, gourmet biscuits (try the Fior di Mandorla), as well as homemade pasta and other Italian treats.
Sushi Izu
29 Station Street, Subiaco (inside Woolworths)
When you need to fill up a crowd, there’s nothing like good Japanese with an abundance of rice and tasty fillings. The sushi platters from Izu are creative masterpieces with even the staple of teriyaki chicken getting a ‘crunchy’ glow up. Go for a simple platter laden with a variety of fillings or try the spectacular Party Tray Yon which makes a great table centrepiece with items like dragon chicken katsu, mango panko prawn rolls and Mount Fuji spicy salmon rolls. And for the optimistic host, you can order Sushi Izu platters the day before your party.

HOME BASE DESIGN & BUILD CENTRE IS A ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR ALL THINGS INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR DESIGNIN THE HEART OF SUBI.
As the pace of the year slows and summer holidays draw closer, thoughts often turn to home — and the projects we’ve been meaning to start all year. Perhaps 2026 will finally be the year the dream build or long-overdue renovation moves from “maybe someday” to “soon.”
Whatever your home project plans, Home Base Design & Build Centre in Subiaco is the perfect place to get inspired, get informed ... and get the project started!
Proudly independent and locally owned since its inception in 1988, the

Three levels of displays and showrooms offer thousands of products and ideas for every home style and project type. Visitors can browse at their own pace, chat with in-centre experts for specialist advice and collect samples, swatches and brochures to take home.

Key showrooms include Midland Brick, Caesarstone, Gainsborough,
Kresta, Laminex, Jason Windows, Euro Appliances, James Hardie and Smartstone, among others.
“One of the best things about Home Base Design & Build Centre is being able to see and compare products and materials in real life,” says Crystal Roberts, Marketing and Education Manager.
“Seeing colours and feeling textures is a natural starting point, but it’s also about understanding functionality. It’s one thing to look online, but another to physically open and close a bifold door to experience how it moves or stand at different kitchen benches to see which height suits you best.”
Fresh Faces
Recent showroom additions include De Dietrich Australia, a premium French appliance brand recognised

With its first Perth showroom exclusive to Home Base Design & Build Centre, De Dietrich brings a new level of innovation and luxury to WA homes. Two more signature brands now calling Subiaco home are ABI Interiors and Nero Tapware. Their extensive showrooms offer the latest finishes and styles in tapware, showers and accessories for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. I’VE
ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT SPENDING TIME AND MONEY ON SKINCARE TREATMENTS ISN’T JUST IMPORTANT SELF-CARE, IT’S SELFINVESTMENT.
If you’re feeling a little lacklustre post-winter and need to get your glow on for summer, allow me to introduce you to Subiaco’s newest beauty kid on the blockSkin Ave Co.
Tucked away on Hay Street, walking into this serene beauty studio instantly makes your shoulders drop and the stress melt
away. I couldn’t wait to enjoy an hour and a half of purely indulgent me time.
Owner Trish Medwin has created Skin Ave Co. to be totally bespoke to client’s needs and she says they are the “muse”.
My treatment starts with a skin consult, with the fab new Observ520 skin analysis machine which allows my skin expert to see how deep any pigmentation and sun damage is and highlights any trouble spots. It’s slightly confronting because it’s an extreme close-up of your skin, but it also allows Skin Ave Co. to make sure they’re targeting the right areas with the right treatments.
For me, we decide to go with the carbon laser treatment, plus a

touch of LED and some dark spot treatments.
Then I get to lie down and relax as the laser treatment begins. I can feel a slight zapping sensation on my skin, but it’s not uncomfortable, then I get treated to the LED machine and finally a few dark spots get the special treatment.
It’s all super relaxing and I feel fabulous when the treatment is done - and because there’s no down time, I can go about the rest of my day without worrying about posttreatment skin. Afterwards I relax in the client lounge and enjoy a cup of herbal tea, while my skin expert talks me through aftercare and how my skin’s glow will progress in the next few days.
Masters of their craft and magical at creating tailored transformations just for you, Skin Ave Co. is a welcome addition to the Subiaco beauty scene.
And if you’re exploring regenerative injectables, you’re in safe hands with the cosmetic nurses at Skin Ave Co. – all cosmedically trained, they can help completely refresh your look with skill, expertise and care.
Post-treatment, my skin is glowing and I’m already planning my next visit. If you’re looking for a bespoke treatment, backed by science to love the skin you’re in – I recommend you walk right on in because Skin Ave Co. take what they do seriously, and

What's the Skin Ave Co. point of difference?
Our clients are never just a treatment on a schedule; they are our muse. Every detail, from the consultation and treatment plan to the way we

welcome you into our space, is shaped around you. We want our clients to pause, slow down, and truly take a moment for themselves. Our space is designed to feel like a breath of fresh air from the constant hustle and bustle of everyday life. We’re about creating treatments and experiences that don’t just enhance your skin but elevate how you feel. We blend medical precision with artistry to achieve results that feel effortless, harmonious, and uniquely yours.
What were you hoping to create in Subi, that didn't already exist? Honestly? Subiaco didn’t need another skin clinic ... it needed a different kind of experience.
I’m someone who truly thrives on looking after others, and I wasn’t interested in simply opening another clinic. I wanted to create a space that feels like an exhale. Somewhere you walk into and immediately feel a shift - calm, cared for, and most importantly seen. Skin Ave Co. is about slowing down, feeling good
in your own skin, and knowing that every treatment is designed with intention. That didn’t exist here before, so I built it.
How do you hope clients feel after a Skin Ave Co. treatment?
I want all our clients to feel like they’ve stolen a moment just for themselvesa pause from the noise, the demands, and the expectations. It’s not just about glowing skin; it’s about that lift in your chest when you realise you matter, your confidence quietly shifts, and you leave feeling lighter.
The one thing you wish all your clients knew about skincare
That it’s not just about the products you put on your skin, it’s about understanding your skin as a living, dynamic organ. Every choice, from what you cleanse with to how you protect it from the sun, how you sleep, and even how you manage stress, impacts its health, resilience, and radiance. Skincare isn’t a quick fix or a trend; it’s a lifelong conversation.

Subiaco has so many great cafés. What is your go-to for a morning coffee or weekend brunch?
I love a coffee from Simon Johnson, but if I have time to sit and enjoy before we open, The Baking Corner, just over the road.
When friends visit from outside Subi, where do you like to take them for a true taste of the neighbourhood? For lunch, Bar Amélie. For a quiet catch-up, Cherubino’s. And on a perfect early evening, Juanita’s. So much choice in Subi!
Do you have a favourite hidden gem in Subi that we should know about?
I love a walk down Rokeby Road. Taking in its blend of heritage façades and modern spaces filled with cool little shops and lots of colourful locals.
Christmas in Subiaco has such a special atmosphere. How do you celebrate the season?
We love the vibe all year, but Christmas is always fun. We celebrate the season of shopping, when we get to be part of someone’s experience - and I think we do well to make it stress-free.
Do you decorate the shop for Christmas?
We do! For the last three years, we’ve had a huge Christmas tree in store. This year we’re changing it updon’t want to spoil any surprises.
What’s your ideal way to spend a summer evening in Subiaco?
The Subi Night Markets are back and make a great catchup spot with friends after work on Saturdays.

Kúl Kúl is such a vibrant part of Subiaco’s retail scene. What first drew you to set up shop here?
I bought Kúl Kúl as an established business in Subiaco. I have never thought of moving from Subi, it's been home to us for 21 years.
How would you describe the personality of Kúl Kúl to someone walking past for the first time?
Calm, clean and considered. Come in and lose yourself for a while. We work hard to make it feel like a home, not a shop.
What’s one jewellery item in store right now that you’re most excited about?
I get excited about all jewellery, I bought a jewellery shop! Asking what makes me most excited is like asking who’s my favourite child. Many of our designers have new collections, and our local artisans are also producing exceptional pieces that genuinely excite me.
What’s one surprising thing people might not know about Kúl Kúl?
We are a bricks-and-mortar store only. We don’t sell online.
What’s been your favourite Kúl Kúl window display so far and did the locals love it as much as you did?
We change our windows every two weeks, and I love when someone stops to see what’s new. Secretly, sometimes when I’m in Subi in the evening, I stop out front to see the windows myself!
If you had to sum up Subiaco in just three words, what would they be?
Charming, vibrant, eclectic.
