Lane Ellwood - Assistant Superintendent Lane has been a part of The Gallery team for many years. In fact, prior to our opening in 1998, Lane flew in a helicopter with photographer Joann Dost and enjoyed a birds eye view the North Course. This year Lane graduated from The University of Arizona with a degree in Agribusiness Economics and Management, and a minor is Mechanical Engineering. He formally joined The Gallery Team as an assistant superintendent, and he also married his high school sweetheart Gretchen in June of this year. Alyssa Vega - Assistant Golf Professional Alyssa attended Sabino High School and started playing golf when she was 16 years old. After graduating, she attended Pima Community College and played on the women’s golf team for one season. She transferred to McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA and competed in several SCC tournaments. After moving back to Tucson she decided to pursue a career in golf, and passed her PAT in order to get into the PGA program. Aside from working at The Gallery she assists with the Pima women’s golf team and enjoys spoiling her dog and taking Zumba classes. Chris Soto - Assistant Superintendent Chris was born and raised in Tucson and attended the University of Arizona where he received a degree in Plant Sciences in 2010. While he was in school he worked at The Gallery alongside his brother Mark Soto. In that time he gained a lot of experience and was able to find an Assistant Superintendent job in Scottsdale at Tonto Verde Golf Club in 2011. From 2011 to 2014 he worked at Tonto Verde and found his now wife, Katie. Chris is back at The Gallery where he started and says he could not be happier.

2014 Overseeding by Paul Ellwood Superintendent
Over the next four weeks our golf course maintenance department will be overseeding at The Gallery Golf Club. We will overseed the North Course September 20th through October 14th and the South Course will follow on October 6th through October 31st. Our desert winter climate is ideal to grow cool season grasses, which include Perennial Rye grass. Our courses will be seeded with Perennial Rye with the exception of the greens, which are bent grass year round. The preparation for the overseeding process begins much earlier with the development of a strong summer Bermuda grass base, which we overseed into. During the previous spring, our staff goes to great lengths to remove the previous season’s overseeded Rye grass. By late March, we mow the fairways at ¼ inch in height to allow the Bermuda grass (initiated by direct sunlight) to emerge gradually into the Rye grass canopy. We choose not to use chemicals to perform this function because they are often very abrupt and erode the playing conditions until the Bermuda grass may emerge. Near the end of May, the 1½ inch roughs are also mowed to ¼ inch, road-broomed and vacuumed to allow the sunlight to penetrate the dense Rye grass canopy allowing the Bermuda grass to become active. By July, through this proactive effort, the Bermuda grass has become the dominate species on the golf course. As the monsoon arrives in July, the climate conditions will favor the Bermuda grass and will accelerate its development, while melting away the remaining Rye grass. The more we do to develop the Bermuda grass rooting structure in the summer the better our conditions will be for Rye grass germination.
It is the Bermuda grass base which becomes the fabric that holds the seed in place during the germination process. To perfect this process, we must open up the Bermuda grass canopy so that when we drop the Rye grass seed it will fall through the canopy to make contact with the soil surface. To prepare the seed bed, we will first verti-cut the Bermuda grass in three directions followed by mowing the fairways to ¼ inch and the roughs at 3/8 inch. All the clippings are then collected and sent to our neighboring rancher to be used as cattle feed for the next few months. Upon completion of this process, we have successfully removed all the leaves from the Bermuda grass plants leaving behind a consistent stand of stubble resembling a harvested field of grain crops. We then broadcast Rye grass seed to the roughs at a rate of 550 pounds per acre, fairways at 700 pounds per acre, and the tees at 900 pounds per acre. The fairways are seeded at a higher rate than the roughs to achieve a denser stand as it is mowed at a much lower height of cut. After seeding, we apply low but frequent sets of water through our well managed irrigation system. We will continue these frequent sets for approximately 14 days. We then let it dry out overnight and take our first mowing followed by the first of three applications of a balanced granular fertilizer, evenly spread prior to November 30th. The remainder of the winter season spray applications of charcoal, iron and liquid fertilizers will be applied bi-weekly. Through these feedings, the Rye grass will become the healthy, dense, dark green color we have come to enjoy both aesthetically and as a superior playing surface.
