Around the Club Lucky Friday the 13th
Last Friday proved to be pretty ‘lucky’ for Bernie Colburn with an ace on #7 of the North Course from 131 yards. The action was not over... the scorecard flew off the cart in a microburst on Hole #13, seriously OVER the homes in Solana...and one of our maintenance staff found it and returned it to them on #15. Having a ‘blast’ with Bernie were playing partners Nancy Staron (left) and Barb Rogers (middle).

Last Tuesday, I visited Phoenix to inspect the first two weeks of progress on our replacement irrigation pump station for the North Course. It is being designed and fabricated by GMI Pump Stations and is scheduled for installation on April 30, 2015. In this area, we pump approximately 10 times the amount of irrigation water per year as our industry counterparts in the northern regions of our country. This gives us a comparatively high wear factor for the mechanical, electrical and structural components of a pumping system. Plus, our salty effluent is very corrosive compared to those fortunate enough to have “cleaner water�. The lifespan of a typical golf course pump station in the desert southwest is about 15 to 20 years. The primary reasons for replacement is corrosion of structural components and/or when the cost of repairs approach the cost of replacement. Another consideration that motivated our decision for replacement is the need to reduce electrical costs, which have increased significantly in the last 15 years. The new system will take advantage of more-energy-efficient technology and hence lower operational costs. Continue reading HERE...
Featured Plants Aloe Ferox is a type of aloe plant found in South Africa. It has dull green leaves that form a petticoat on the stem as they dry. Five to eight branches rise from the center with spiked, yellowish-red flowers on the ends. The aloe ferox is more commonly known as bitter aloe. It has long been harvested for its laxative properties, and it is also effective when used on arthritis and wounds; it is often used in cosmetics. Aloe ferox is popular with wildlife because its flowers attract many bird species and insects, and monkeys and baboons commonly raid the aloe for nectar. These colorful plants can be seen around the clubhouse, including the younger plant adjacent to the elevator (bottom photo).
