New Starting Times on Wednesdays In an effort to maximize starting times on Wednesday’s we are making some adjustments on the Tee Sheets. For the remainder of the season when Ladies Day is on the North Course, we will use a “Split Tee” format going off of #1 & #10 on that course in the afternoon following the Ladies Shotgun (think Friday’s!). When Ladies Day is on the South, we will utilize Split Tees both morning and afternoon on the North Course. This will make available more prime starting times for everyone!

Greens’ Segregation Paul Ellwood Over the past few months, I have fielded questions from both members and maintenance staff asking as to why the greens have taken on a mottled appearance. Even our employees that mow greens have returned to the shop in the morning to let us know there are hot spots on the greens. Upon inspection, we find that they are the blue-green to purple spots that seem to occur randomly throughout a greens surface. When overnight temperatures fall during the winter months, the cold triggers a physiological occurrence in bentgrass that exposes ‘segregation’, a phenomena that has taken 3-4 years to develop since the greens were originally planted. To understand this occurrence on golf greens, we must first explore the production history of the seed we used to initially populate the green’s surface. Hybrid bermudagrasses are planted as vegetative cuttings, hence, all plants are identical to the parent. In contrast, bentgrass seed is produced by the cross-pollination of two parents; therefore each individual seed is unique. Just as no two human siblings are identical even though they have the same parents, neither are any of the seeds used to populate the green’s surface. No two seeds have the same genetics so each has different attributes, some superior and some inferior. When we seed greens, we plant approximately 100 individual seeds on every square inch. As they germinate and begin to grow, they all compete for the same space. The more-aggressive or best-adapted biotypes will overcome the weaker ones and, over the next few years, will enlarge, thus creating sub-communities (patches) of survivors within the boundary of the golf green. This process is known as segregation. As these patches compete with their neighbors for more space, the green becomes a collection of plant genetic codes that never existed before. It is at this stage that a segregated golf green is a great laboratory for plant breeders to search for new superior genetic lines that may eventually become the next generation of improved bentgrass varieties. Over the winter months, our temperature may shift from daytime 60o - 75o to as low as 25o at night. During the day, the plants are busy producing sugars, which at night, will be translocated to the storage portions of the plants. It is during this time of year when the nights are cold that the plants fail to translocate all of the sugar molecules. The molecules that fail to translocate attach to the purple or blue pigment within the plant called anthrocyanin. The buildup of this pigment (anthrocyanin) in the leaves causes them to develop a dark green to a purple hue. In addition, each biotype will react differently to this occurrence causing the patches to range from pale green to the most obvious purple color. More specifically, this plant response is in reaction to a phosphorous deficiency, which is induced by cold temperature. There is actually plenty of phosphorous in the soil but the cold temperature makes it unavailable to the plants. That is why we spoon-feed nutrients directly to the leaves by spray application during the winter as it bypasses the inactivation of phosphorous by cold soil. When the overnight temperatures rise in the spring, the soil phosphorous becomes available again and the plants change from purple back to their usual green color, which we enjoy until the following fall. 14000 Dove Mountain Blvd. • Marana, AZ • 85658 • (520) 744-2555

Introducing Kevin Romo-Leon Pilates Instructor
As the club continues to grow, we have added a new Pilates Instructor which will allow us to offer our members more of a selection to receive one on one sessions. Kevin Romo-Leon is a Tucson native, and graduated from the University of Arizona. Currently, Kevin works at Red Monkey Pilates Studio instructing both private Pilates Reformer Sessions and Pilates Mat classes. In conjunction with that, he is also an Instructor and Fitness Director at Heart and Soul. Kevin encourages club members to use Pilates as a “recovery workout”- to invest in one-on-one sessions to reduce muscle tightness from your last sporting activity, while preparing the body for ‘next time.’ He expresses that Pilate’s movements stretch one muscle group with the benefit of strengthening the opposite side of the body. And that the more balanced our muscle groups are, the less the body will experience soreness and injury. “If my clients walk away from a session feeling better than they did coming into it, I’ve achieved my daily teaching goal.” Available Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
