Golf Maintenance Report (Dormant Bermuda grass Bunker Surrounds) This past week, we completed a two-week process of eradicating the weeds and stray ryegrass from the dormant bermudagrass bunker surrounds on both of the Gallery courses. For the past ten years, we have not overseeded our bunker faces and noses for two reasons. The first and most important reason is the visual contrast that the dormant bermudagrass-framed bunkers create against the dark green canvas of fairways and roughs overseeded with ryegrass. Although the high-flashed sand bunker faces of the North need little to signal their locations, the South bunkers visually benefit greatly from the dormant bermudagrass surrounds. This allows each player to identify the bunker hazards and align their shots quickly which, in turn, accelerates play. The second reason to not overseed bunker faces is to protect the quality of our bunker sand. The dense bermudagrass canopy of the bunker faces stabilizes the soil and debris, thus preventing it from flowing downhill and contaminating the sand. When contaminated, the sand must be replaced at great cost. If we were to overseed the faces, they would first need to be scalped to remove the protective cover. Then, weeks of heavy watering to germinate the seed would erode the unprotected slopes into the bunkers. A similar erosion would then happen again in June with the ryegrass is removed to allow bermudagrass recovery. In the late Fall and early Winter, with no competition from a dense ryegrass canopy, the dormant bunker faces become a nice living space for stray ryegrass, broadleaf weeds and Poa annua (annual bluegrass). This degrades the aesthetic quality of the golf experience. To remedy this, we first spray the entire bunker face surfaces with a light-enough dose of Roundup to destroy the unwanted plants while barely affecting the semi-dormant bermudagrass. After allowing a week for the Roundup to translocate from the leaves to the roots, we treat the areas with a plant desiccant which destroys the green leaves in three to five days. The result of this process is that we can enjoy the golden brown and weed-free bunker faces on our courses. To create the sharp crisp edge between the dormant bermudagrass and the adjacent ryegrass, we use a device that has greatly reduced the time needed to complete the spray applications compared to our previous shielding technique. This device, which was created here at the Gallery by assistant golf course superintendent Jeff Knadler, features a round disk which serves as a walking shield to which the spray nozzles are attached. This allows us to spray any edge with precise accuracy at walking speed. Uninterrupted by play, we could complete an 18-hole course in one day. In contrast, using a simple shield would take three people an entire week. The “wonder wheel” treats a four-foot strip adjacent to the dormant bermudagrass/green ryegrass interface. The second attached photo shows our staff treating the rest of the bunker faces and noses not sprayed with the wheel.
