Galeries Bartoux is pleased to present a major exhibition dedicated to the animal sculptor Michel Bassompierre, on the occasion of his 50th anniversary of beginning his career.
Du 30 septembre au 15 octobre 2021, nous vous invitons au sein de notre galerie parisienne à découvrir plus de soixante-dix œuvres du sculpteur.

« Michel Bassompierre est un artiste spécialisé dans l’art animalier aux lignes pures, simples et généreuses. Ses mains sculptent la vie : celle de deux ours jouant ensemble, celle d’un gorille au regard pensif. Michel Bassompierre est un observateur obstiné, révélant un mouvement, une attitude, une émotion. Il va à l’essentiel, rendant son œuvre si délicate qu’une irrépressible envie de la caresser vous submerge. Au-delà de nous émouvoir, ses animaux sont porteurs d’un message pour nous les hommes : celui de préserver leur environnement, notre planète. De bronze ou de marbre, ces animaux paisibles entre ombre et lumière nous forcent à nous arrêter un instant. La fascination est immédiate, presque enfantine. Michel Bassompierre est un faiseur de rêve.
« Michel Bassompierre is an artist specialised in animal art with pure, simple and generous lines. His hands sculpt life: that of two bears playing together, that of a gorilla with a pensive look. Michel Bassompierre is an obstinate observer, revealing a movement, an attitude, an emotion. He gets to the heart of the matter, making his work so delicate that an irrepressible desire to caress it overwhelms you. Beyond moving us, his animals carry a message for us as humans: to preserve their environment, our planet. Avec sa silhouette pure et vigoureuse, le tigre prend vie, caressé par la lumière. Indomptable et charismatique, le tigre fascine l’homme depuis des siècles. Réinterprété par l’un des plus talentueux sculpteurs animaliers contemporains, il séduit par la douceur de ses courbes et son pelage rayé. Cette création exceptionnelle traduit toute la force et le tempérament de ce prédateur. « Après de nombreux dessins et quelques ébauches en terre, j’ai trouvé la position que j’allais donner au tigre royal de Baccarat : une posture majestueuse et puissante, sans aucune agressivité. Un dessin complexe magistralement mis en forme par les artisans de Baccarat, véritables sculpteurs de lumière » - Michel Bassompierre. « Je suis un sauvage » - Michel Bassompierre Au cours de ses 50 années de carrière, Michel Bassompierre a insufflé à la discipline un style résolument contemporain, reconnaissable au premier regard. Séduisante et attachante, son œuvre a parcouru le monde, laissant échapper son bestiaire de marbre et de bronze aux quatre coins du globe. Captivé depuis l’enfance par le dessin et le modelage, il réalise des milliers de croquis dans les cirques et les zoos ainsi qu’au cœur du Museum national d’Histoire naturelle, à la Ménagerie et dans la Galerie d’Anatomie comparée. Il se débarrasse de l’anecdote pour aller à l’essentiel : une forme pure, des courbes délicates, une lumière enveloppante qui souligne la rondeur des masses. Avec une anatomie et un dessin parfaitement maitrisé, une force tranquille se dégage de ses réalisations. Il a su générer une œuvre puissante, fruit d’une approche poétique de la lumière qui interpelle la sensibilité du spectateur. Mais ce sont aussi la tendresse, le respect et l’humilité du sculpteur qui se font jour dans ce travail d’une rare délicatesse. Son approche artistique traduit son lien au monde sauvage, pour lequel il nourrit une grande fascination, loin de tout anthropomorphisme.
Over the course of his 50-year career, Michel Bassompierre has infused the discipline with a resolutely contemporary style, recognizable at first glance. Seductive and engaging, his work has travelled the world, sending his bestiary of marble and bronze to the four corners of the globe. Captivated by drawing and modelling since childhood, he made thousands of sketches in circuses and zoos as well as in the heart of the National Museum of Natural History, in the Menagerie and in the Gallery of Comparative Anatomy. He gets rid of the superfluous to go for the essential: pure form, delicate curves, enveloping light that underlines the roundness of the masses. With a perfectly mastered anatomy in drawing, a quiet strength emerges from his work. He has generated a powerful work, the result of a poetic approach to light that appeals to the viewer’s sensitivity. But it is also the tenderness, the respect and the humility of the sculptor that emerge in this work of a rare delicacy. His artistic approach reflects his link to the wild world, for which he has a great fascination, far from any anthropomorphism.
