Planning Together Apart
From
group chat dreams to boarding passes,,digital collaboration turns travel goals into reality
Words by Phia Manuell Layoso
Late nights and packed schedules leave little room for face- to-face brainstorming, yet somehow, my friends and I always manage to make our trips a reality. Amidst deadlines, errands, and personal obligations, we often find ourselves coordinating across different cities. What used to involve the entire group huddled around a table with maps and planners now happens in bits and pieces through various digital platforms.
Planning Through Apps
For us, every adventure begins in a group chat. I might drop a link to a flash flight deal; soon after, a friend shares a TikTok of a hidden beach café, and another proposes tentative dates. These conversations ebb and flow over hours or days, with messages arriving during commutes, lunch breaks, and late-night wind-downs. Even when we aren’t responding in real-time, the collective excitement builds steadily.
We lean on a suite of apps to streamline the chaos. Messenger serves as our primary boardroom, Instagram and TikTok act as our mood boards, and Google Maps serves as our final reality check. Through these tools, the distance vanishes; it feels as if we are all in the same room, hovering over a shared map.
Picking Where to Go
Choosing a location is often the first significant hurdle. I’ve found that sharing direct links from platforms like Agoda and Klook is the most effective way to gather input without the fog of confusion.
To organize our thoughts, we typically turn to Google Sheets. This allows everyone to cast votes for their favorite spots, compare price points, and weigh pros and cons sideby-side. By centralizing the data, the final decision feels like a collective victory rather than a solo itinerary forced upon the group.
Planning the Details
Once the destination is locked in, we dive into the logistics. We launch a collaborative Google Doc to build our itinerary from the ground up. Our roles usually fall into a natural rhythm: I tend to focus on route logistics, one friend hunts for aesthetic cafés or local “hole-in-thewall” spots, while another keeps us grounded by managing the budget and time constraints.
This is where the trip truly becomes collaborative. Every excursion is the result of shared input, ensuring that no single person shoulders the burden of planning. By the time we’re finished, the document is a living reflection of our shared enthusiasm and individual personalities.
Sharing Costs Clearly
Finances are always a bit of a challenge when traveling with friends, but tools such as Splitwise make it easy for us to manage costs. We can keep track of who paid for what— food, transport, and activities—so there are no misunderstandings or awkward moments.
Having the ability to view costs clearly makes it simpler to discuss budgets and make changes if necessary. No one feels pressured, and everyone knows what to expect. This removes the anxiety of unexpected expenses and makes the trip more enjoyable.
Finding Time to Go
The hardest part is usually finding a time when everyone can go. With different work times and personal stuff, trying to find a weekend when everyone is free can seem impossible. Shared online calendars are a big help because they show right away when everyone is open.
While these tools are very useful, being flexible is most important. It’s normal for some friends to come only for part of the trip, or for others to change their plans so they can be there. This shared effort to adjust and plan together is what makes our trips possible and makes our friendships stronger.
The
Fun of Looking Forward Together
Getting ready for a trip is one of the best parts. For weeks before we leave, we make the fun last longer by sending each other pictures of nice places, talking about what to wear, or finding menus of where to eat. Even just talking about the small stuff, like packing, brings a feeling of excitement to our normal days.
This looking forward together makes the trip feel enjoyable for many weeks, making the whole time seem richer and longer even before it starts. In this way, getting ready is a good way to stay close, even when we are busy with our individual lives.
Turning Plans into Memories
Our careful planning ensures that the trip unfolds smoothly, just as we hoped. Because we agreed on every activity beforehand, the experience feels authentically “ours.”
With the help of modern technology, planning a trip can be as enjoyable as the trip itself. By sharing ideas, balancing responsibilities, and anticipating experiences together, we’ve discovered that the strength of a friendship isn’t measured by proximity, but by participation.
The Solo Summer Side Quest Manual
Words by Aljhelyn Piador
all Filipinos will agree that there’s nothing subtle about summer in the Philippines.
It arrives loud. The sun doesn’t gently rise. It attacks. By 9 AM, the pavement is auditioning to become a frying pan, electric fans are working overtime like unpaid interns, and everyone collectively agrees that iced coffee is no longer a luxury but survival equipment.
Jeepneys feel like mobile saunas. The air smells faintly of sunscreen, dried fish, and existential
heat. Group chats suddenly fill with “Let’s go to the beach! Tara, Elyu?” messages that are 70% serious and 30% delusion because everyone knows scheduling is the real villain.
Somewhere between deadlines, traffic, and trying not to melt into the sidewalk, Gen Z shaped by the internet and raised on maincharacter energy found a way to romanticize all of it by calling everything a “side quest.”
Coffee in a new café? Side quest.
Trying pottery for no reason? Side quest.
Taking a different route home? Main character behavior, but technically, still a side quest.
But summer side quests aren’t supposed to be “extra.” They’re not filler episodes. They’re not optional mini-games you ignore while grinding through work and responsibilities. Sometimes, the so-called side quest is the point.
Welcome to your solo summer side quests.
Side Quest #1:
Work from Everywhere Agenda
Or working while people-watching in an amusement park food court in Laguna on Thursday. Chaotic, slightly unhinged, not exactly productivity-approved. But it’s just for a day. What could possibly go wrong? It’s not like you’ll lose your job because a kid is crying over a roller coaster he couldn’t ride due to motion sickness.
It doesn’t have to break the bank. Day-use hotels. Low-cost stays. Public libraries. Local cafés. Even a co-working space you’ve never tried.
This summer side quest is about working while letting life unfold in new spaces. Take a page from Maya Angelou, who rented different hotel rooms just to write. She understood something most of us forget that unfamiliar corners sharpen focus. A new window view can unlock a new paragraph. A different silence can reset your thoughts. Now imagine that in the Philippines.
Opening your laptop in a quiet city library in Quezon City on Monday, where the smell of donated books lingers in the air. The fast rhythm of keyboards from students finishing their theses becomes oddly comforting, proof that some people are still writing their hearts out and not outsourcing their souls entirely to AI.
Spending a sunlit morning on a forest park bench in Manila on Tuesday, where productivity feels almost romantic. Just be ready for the occasional whisper of the Pasig River in the background.
Checking into a budget inn in Rizal on Wednesday, watching the afternoon drift outside your window before replying to emails.
Let tech carry you. Draft on Notion or Google Docs. Bring pocket Wi-Fi or an eSIM. Wear noise-canceling headphones like armor. Use map apps like a compass.
Side Quest #2:
K-Drama by the Beach
You could binge at home.
Or you could bring the drama outside.
Download a few episodes, pack snacks, find a quiet stretch of sand or even a lakeside park. Watch heartbreak scenes with actual waves crashing behind you. Let the sunset act as your cinematic lighting. Laugh, cry, and tan at the same time.
Suddenly, you’re not just watching romance.
You’re starring on your own.
Cover Story
Side Quest #3:
Pop-Up Event Explorer
Say yes to the small things.
An after-work acoustic gig.
A random poetry reading.
A pop-up market you saw on Instagram five minutes ago.
A government fair showcasing proudly Filipino-made products.
You don’t need a grand plan. Just pure, slightly unhinged curiosity.
The magic of pop-ups is their impermanence. They exist for a night, and then they’re gone. After all, our generation thrives on limited drops and fleeting moments.
Showing up becomes your quiet rebellion against routine.
Side Quest #5:
Surrender control.
Open your phone and let AI pick your next stop: A museum. A hole-in-the-wall café. A town two hours away. Maybe even a spontaneous day trip to Baguio.
Side Quest #4:
Wander Without a Plan
Do not Google “Top 10 Must-Visit.” Just step out and let the day unfold.
Turn left when you usually turn right. Enter the thrift bookstore you’ve passed a hundred times. Sit somewhere new and people-watch.
Give yourself a time limit: “I’ll wander for three hours without following anything. I’ll let my feet lead me like they have a brain of their own.”
It’s not unproductive. It’s observational living. Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you stop trying to optimize everything. Right? Right.
The fun isn’t just in the place but in giving up the pressure to decide.
If AI can threaten our jobs, it can at least take over our itinerary stress. Curating every move is cute. Letting randomness lead? Oddly freeing.
Side Quest #6:
Festival Hopper
Summer in the Philippines means barangay fiestas, food fairs, and weekend expos. Go not just for the crowd, but for the details. The smoke from street food grills, the game booths, the random live band covering early 2000s hits like it’s still 2007.
Document it. Taste everything. Stay until your feet hurt.
Filipinos are known for generosity, whether it’s food, free tastes, or random giveaways. This is your sign to really experience being Pinoy.
Side Quest #7:
Summer Zine
Collect receipts. Photos. Notes. Random thoughts.
Compile them into a tiny digital or printed zine. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to exist.
Even old bank transaction receipts can make you reflect. Remember that moment you let the money slide because the experience felt worth it? Photos are great, but context is better.
At the end of summer, you’ll have proof that you lived it.
Side Quest #8:
Photo-a-Day
One theme per day: Shadows. Yellow things. Strangers’ shoes. Reflections in windows.
By the end of summer, you won’t just have photos. You’ll have perspective. Because paying attention is its own kind of adventure.
This summer is the perfect time to experience organic encounters, not just romantic ones, but encounters with yourself. The kind that leaves a mark.
Don’t let your side quests stay “side.” Make them the main event. Because life, like the Philippines’ summer sun, is best experienced fully. A little messy, a little chaotic, and completely unforgettable.
Repeat after me: “Work hard… but side quest harder.”
GADGETS TO ELEVATE YOUR SUMMER GETAWAY
Essential gear for safety, comfort, and entertainment on the road this season
Words by Gabriel Pe
Summer is just around the corner, and that usually means a well-deserved getaway is in order. While the destination is always the star of the show, the right technology can act as the perfect supporting cast— transforming a good trip into an effortless one.
With that in mind, here are the noteworthy gadgets to pack for your next summer escape:
Cover Story
The Peace of Mind: Smart Tags
Smart tags have evolved into a nonnegotiable for the modern traveler. These compact trackers allow you to keep a digital eye on your belongings—and even your loved ones—without requiring a constant internet connection.
Beyond simply being tucked into luggage, smart tags are being repurposed through creative bands and straps that turn them into bracelets or necklaces. These are incredibly effective in bustling tourist crowds where the risk of separation is high. They are also a boon for pet owners; if you’re bringing a furry friend along for the adventure, a collar-mounted tag ensures they’re never truly lost.
The Survival Essential: Rechargeable Mini Fans
Once considered a luxury, the portable mini fan has become a survival tool for navigating local heat and humidity. As we head into the peak of summer, these devices are the ultimate defense against grueling temperatures during long commutes or outdoor excursions.
Modern iterations have moved far beyond basic blades. Many now serve as multi-purpose “Swiss Army knives” of tech: some feature reverse-charging to double as a power bank, while others boast detachable heads that transform the
device into a powerful blower or a vacuum to keep your vehicle sand-free.
The Personal Sanctuary: Headphones & Smart Audio Glasses
Whether you’re traveling by land, sea, or air, a high-quality audio experience is essential. A pair of headphones with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is a true godsend for blocking out the drone of jet engines, talkative seatmates, or a snoring roommate.
For those who prefer a more integrated look, Smart Audio Glasses are a stylish alternative. These frames blend traditional eyewear with discreet speakers positioned near the ear. Many come as sunglasses, while premium brands offer frames that can be fitted with your specific prescription. Some even feature built-in cameras, allowing you to capture memories hands-free and discreetly—a clever way to keep your phone tucked away in areas prone to pickpockets.
The Transit Cure: Handheld Gaming Devices
Handheld gaming is enjoying a massive resurgence. From the versatile Nintendo Switch to highperformance Windows and SteamOS handhelds as well as pocket-sized retro emulators, there is a device for every type of gamer. These gadgets are the perfect antidote to long flights, tedious bus rides, or the quiet stretches of a road trip. They can even be lifesavers during a rainy night on a cruise, ensuring the fun doesn’t stop just because you’re in transit.
“Technology has a way of turning the ‘dull stretches’ of travel into the highlight of the trip. By bringing along a few of these smart companions, you can focus less on the logistics and more on the moments that matter.”
Immersive Escapes: AR & VR Glasses
To truly “level up” your entertainment, AR (Augmented Reality) glasses are a game-changer. Devices like XReal project a massive virtual display behind tinted lenses, turning a small handheld screen into a portable movie theater that fits in your pocket. They connect easily via USB-C and are light enough to use virtually anywhere.
If you want to escape the cramped reality of a plane entirely, VR (Virtual Reality) goggles like the Meta Quest are the answer. With built-in batteries and standalone operating systems, these allow you to immerse yourself in a private cinema or a 360-degree world without needing a bulky PC. Even if you aren’t a gamer, watching a movie on a virtual IMAX-sized screen is a fantastic way to make a six-hour flight vanish in an instant.
Smart Tech, Better Memories
Technology has a way of turning the ‘dull stretches’ of travel into the highlight of the trip. By bringing along a few of these smart companions, you can focus less on the logistics and more on the moments that matter. Here’s to a summer of better views, better sound, and better gaming—wherever the road takes you!
Acerpure Chill
MARKING ITS ENTRY into the largeappliance category, Acerpure, the lifestyle brand of Acer, introduces Acerpure Chill, a lineup of high-performance windowtype air conditioners built for tropical climates. Designed for Filipino homes, the series focuses on energy efficiency, compact installation, and consistent cooling performance.
At the heart of Acerpure Chill is a Dual Inverter Compressor, which uses two rotors to cool rooms faster while consuming less electricity compared to standard compressors. This system helps maintain stable temperatures, reduce operational noise, and extend overall unit lifespan. The result is efficient cooling designed for daily, long-hour use.
The units utilize R32 refrigerant, offering zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and lower Global Warming Potential (GWP), providing environmentally conscious cooling without compromising performance.
Durability is reinforced through Hydrophilic Fin Technology, which applies a gold hydrophilic coating to
the condenser fins. This treatment helps reduce corrosion and maintain heatexchange efficiency over time, particularly important in humid environments. A Smart Filter Clean Indicator notifies users when maintenance is needed, helping ensure optimal airflow and cooling performance.
The top-discharge design improves air circulation efficiency while minimizing air recirculation and reducing groundlevel noise. It also requires less horizontal installation space, making it suitable for compact window configurations.
Available in four variants ranging from 0.75 HP to 1.5 HP, Acerpure Chill offers options for bedrooms, small living spaces, and larger areas requiring higher cooling capacity. The series combines functional engineering with a clean, modern aesthetic that fits contemporary interiors.
Now available at Acer Concept Stores, major appliance retailers, and official online channels, Acerpure Chill delivers inverter-powered efficiency and practical design for households looking to upgrade their cooling systems.

Circle to Search allows users to search directly from on-screen images, text, or music without switching apps.

Sharp Purefit Air Purifier ( FP-S40P )
DESIGNED FOR HEALTHIER everyday indoor living, the Sharp Purefit Air Purifier (FP-S40P-T / FP-S40P-W) delivers efficient, quiet air purification for homes and small workspaces. Built to Japanese quality standards, the unit addresses common indoor air concerns, including dust, allergens, odors, and fine airborne particles, through a combination of filtration, airflow design, and proprietary air-cleaning technology.
The Purefit Air Purifier is rated for rooms of up to 30 square meters, making it suitable for bedrooms, home offices, and shared living areas. A key performance feature is its Dual Suction Double Filter system, which draws air from both sides of the unit to increase intake volume and accelerate purification. This dual-sided suction design allows more air to be processed in less time while maintaining consistent circulation throughout the room.
Its multi-layer filtration system combines a pre-filter that captures larger particles such as dust, hair, and pet dander with a HEPA and deodorizing filter that traps fine particles and helps reduce household odors. Working together,
these filters support continuous everyday use, even in enclosed indoor spaces.
Central to the unit’s performance is Plasmacluster Ion Technology, a proprietary innovation from Sharp. The system releases positive and negative ions into the air, similar to those found in natural environments. These ions attach to airborne allergens, mold, and certain bacteria to help suppress their activity, while also reducing static electricity so dust can be captured more effectively by the filters.
For added convenience, the Sharp Purefit Air Purifier features automatic air sensing that adjusts operation based on detected air quality, along with quiet sleep mode, adjustable fan speeds, timer settings, and a child lock. Its lownoise, energy-efficient operation makes it suitable for continuous use throughout the day and night.
The purifier’s clean, understated design has earned international recognition, including the iF Design Award 2024 under the “Pure Air, Pure Lifestyle” concept, reinforcing its balance of performance, practicality, and minimalist aesthetics.

REDMI NOTE 15 PRO 5G
The Xiaomi Redmi Note series has cemented itself as an all-around powerhouse device. It is also one of the most value-oriented devices on the market, thanks to its diverse lineup. I have been a fan of the lineup since its early days; in fact, I used two models (the Redmi Note 3 and Note 5 AI) as my main devices back then. The Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G is my latest look at the Redmi Note series, and it has reminded me why I fell in love with the series in the first place.
DESIGN
First, let’s start with what is in the box. Upon opening the box, you will be greeted with the device itself. Ours was the black variant. Underneath the phone, you will find the paperwork, a SIM tray ejector pin, and a rubber case. Finally, you will see the USB-A to USB-C cable and the 45W HyperCharge power brick.
The Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G features a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution (2772 x 1280) capable of up to 120Hz refresh rate, 3,200-nit brightness, and HDR10+ support. The display is large—the largest it has ever been for this series. It is good for media consumption, but a downside I found is that it can be difficult for individuals with smaller hands to hold. The rubber case helps a bit, but I still worry it might slip out of my hands at any moment.
At the back is the camera setup, which features a new 200-megapixel main shooter. On the front, there is a 20-megapixel selfie camera. To the right are the volume and power buttons. On top is the secondary speaker and a surprising standout: the Infrared port. Finally, beneath is the primary speaker, the USB-C charging port, and the SIM card tray. It supports dual nano-SIMs and e-SIM.
HARDWARE
Powering the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G is the MediaTek Dimensity 7400-Ultra, a powerhouse processor. Paired with the processor is 8GB of RAM with 4GB of expandable RAM. Our review unit had 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. This combo scored a respectable 939,598 in Antutu v11, 1044 single-core and 2899 multi-core in Geekbench 6, and 12,775 in PCMark.
Regarding gaming, the phone can easily handle Genshin Impact at high resolution and 60fps. Esports titles like Honor of Kings and League of Legends: Wild Rift were also a breeze, thanks to the phone’s support for Ultra settings. There is also Xiaomi’s GameBoost feature, which enhances
gaming performance for smoother gameplay.
Moving on to the camera, the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G features Xiaomi’s new 200-megapixel ultimate-clarity main camera. True enough, it produces clear, social media-worthy shots in good conditions. One of the highlights of this new camera system is its five focal lengths (1x, 1.2x, 1.5x, 2x, and 4x). These focal lengths provide a more versatile shooting experience, and the 200-megapixel sensor ensures image quality remains consistent in any shot. In addition to the main shooter, the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G features an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 20-megapixel selfie camera. Both produce decent results, with the 8-megapixel lens producing colors and sharpness similar to those of the main camera.
For video, it supports up to 4K resolution but only at 30fps. 1080p supports both 30
and 60fps shooting, but if you want to use the ShootSteady mode, you are limited to 1080p 30fps. Video quality is alright and good enough for capturing life’s important moments.
Finally, let’s look at the battery and battery life. The Redmi Note 15 Pro features a 6580mAh battery with 45W Turbo Charge capability. PCMark’s Work 3.0 battery test showed the phone can go for 16 hours and 43 minutes. In realworld use, the phone easily lasted me a whole day and allowed for a few hours of light gaming at night. Charging time was also quick, with the phone going from 10% to 100% in just over an hour. With its massive battery and 22.5W reverse charging capability, you can also use it as a power bank for other devices, such as earbuds. Xiaomi has also claimed that the battery was built to last 6 years, meaning you can enjoy the phone’s full performance for a very long time.
USER EXPERIENCE
The main outstanding feature of the Redmi Note 15 series is its “Titan Tough” build, a first for the Redmi brand. The phone is IP68 and IP69K water- and dustresistant, and can even be submerged up to 1.5m for 30 minutes. Xiaomi claims that the phone can actually withstand being submerged in 2-meters of water for more than 24 hours. This was a test they actually recreated during the launch. Beyond water and dust, the phone can also withstand falls from up to 2.5m. Accidental falls are no issue for this phone.
I had fun using the Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G. It felt like a reminder of my old devices—a midrange product that can punch above its weight class. Gaming felt amazing on this device; there were no heating issues or irritating slowdowns. Media viewing is also top-notch; the huge display was great, and the speakers were also decent. The Redmi Note 15 Pro offers a volume boost of up to 400%, and even at 100%, it can fill a small room.
The cameras also amazed me in certain scenarios. The cameras in this phone can still offer more than they do now. I noticed that using Pro mode and dialing in my
own settings produced better results than the quick snaps in photo mode. Even lowlight shots were better using Pro settings than the quick photo mode. A software update will push the camera to even greater heights than it can already reach.
Another thing I had mixed feelings about was the AI photo-editing feature. First, it is one of the fastest I have tried and one of the better ones at improving image quality and removing subjects. My only issue is that you need a Xiaomi account to use it. Xiaomi accounts are free, but it is a hassle to remember another username and password.
VALUE
Priced at PHP19,999, the Redmi Note 15 Pro is pricey, but it is still a compelling investment. Its durable design, solid performance, great camera, and longevity—given the expected four major OS updates and a 6-year battery life— make it worth it if you have the cash. It has reminded me why I chose them before and why I might choose this one again.
That said, if money is an issue, the Redmi Note 15 Pro or the Redmi Note 15 5G
might be a better fit, with the non-5G Pro offering the same features, albeit running on a MediaTek Helios G200 Ultra Processor. As for the Redmi Note 15 5G, it’s running on last gen’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, and with a weaker IP66 water resistance and an older 108-megapixel main camera.
BOTTOMLINE
The Redmi Note 15 Pro 5G is a great investment for people who want a device that is guaranteed to last for years.

NUBIA V80 MAX
I didn’t expect much from the nubia V80 Max, to be completely honest. Another rugged budget phone, right? But after using it, I have to admit, it does a few things smarter than I anticipated. It’s lightweight, surprisingly clean-looking, and built to survive the occasional drop.
This phone quietly proves that you can get durability and thoughtful design without spending a fortune.
DESIGN
Compared to the original nubia V80, the V80 Max is more refined and visually appealing, at least for my preference. The Aurelia Gold variant, accented with a mostly white finish exudes a premium feel, and the minimalist camera placement gives it a cleaner, more balanced look. Unlike the V80, which felt a bit bulky and industrial, the V80 Max combines ruggedness with a lighter, sleeker profile.
Specs-wise, it packs 1.8 m drop resistance, 360° internal reinforcement, and IP64 splash/dust protection, which makes it tough without feeling like you’re carrying a brick. Lightweight, ergonomic, and practical, it’s one of those rare budget-rugged phones that actually looks good out of the box, no need for a bulky case to “fix” the aesthetics.
For me, it’s a clear improvement over the V80 in both form and feel.
HARDWARE
The specs won’t blow anyone away, but that’s not the point. It handles daily apps and multitasking smoothly, and the big screen with a 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and browsing feel fluid.
It’s decent for casual gaming, think lighter or older titles, nothing hardcore.
Audio-wise, the loudspeaker and 3.5mm headphone jack are practical and convenient.
Battery is a highlight: 6000mAh keeps you going well beyond a full day, though charging is a bit slow, so overnight or long naps are your best friend.
The camera is okay, fine for casual photos. Nothing impressive, but reasonable for its price.
USER EXPERIENCE
Daily use is surprisingly smooth. MyOS 16 is clean and intuitive, and small features like AI Memory and Scam Alert are genuinely useful. The fingerprint scanner is fast, and the phone feels comfortable to hold despite its size.
It’s also held up well in real life. I unintentionally dropped it a few times, and the display didn’t flicker or show any issues. Feeling confident in its durability, I even tossed it into my tote bag with other
things, let it tumble a bit, and it handled everything without affecting performance.
For streaming, I tried watching K-dramas on it. Colors are decent, and the large screen makes binge-watching comfortable. Overall, it’s practical, reliable, and actually enjoyable for daily tasks and media consumption.
VALUE
Launched at PHP6,499 with regular SRP at PHP9,999, the V80 Max is a “for
its price” device that punches above its category. It offers durability, a solid battery, a decent display, and a clean design, things competitors in this price range often compromise on.
It’s not perfect, but for a budget-friendly rugged phone, it delivers more than expected.
BOTTOMLINE
The nubia V80 Max proves that a rugged phone doesn’t have to look clunky or feel heavy, and honestly, it may be the smartest decision you can make if you’re in this price range. Durable build, long battery life, casual gaming capability, and a decent media experience are the standout wins.
It’s not a powerhouse for photography or hardcore gaming, and the HD+ screen isn’t ultra-sharp. Charging is slow, and the camera is just okay, but for daily apps, casual gaming, K-drama streaming, and peace of mind, it handles everything reliably.
For me, it’s durable, practical, and surprisingly clean-looking; a budgetfriendly device you can actually enjoy using every day.

THE OPEN ROAD AWAITS
A Beginner’s Guide to the Ultimate Road Trip
From vehicle vitals to the perfect playlist, everything you need to know for a seamless first journey.
The summer season is the perfect time to explore, and there is no better way to do so than with a classic road trip. Whether you’re heading toward a tourist favorite or an obscure, hidden gem, taking to the open road is an experience to remember.
While many of us grew up in the backseat of the family car, there is something special about reliving those memories as the one behind the wheel—whether you’re traveling with friends, a significant other, or taking your own children on their first big adventure. Of course, the prospect of a long-haul drive can be daunting for a first-timer, but modern technology has made navigation more straightforward than ever.
To help you get started, here are the essential pointers for your very first road trip.
1. Inspect Your Vehicle (and Yourself)
The most critical step happens before you even pull out of the driveway. You are entrusting your safety and the lives of your loved ones to your vehicle, so ensuring it is in tip-top condition is a must.
Always perform a thorough check before departing. A helpful way to remember the essentials is the acronym BLOWBAGETS:
• Battery
• Lights
• Oil
• Water
• Brakes
• Air
• Gas
• Engine
• Tires
• Self
While you can check most of these yourself, for longer journeys, it is wise to have a professional at a service center give the car a onceover.
Equally important is your own mental and physical state. As the driver, you are responsible for everyone in the car. This means starting the trip well-rested and practicing defensive driving. Know your limits; driving for hours through the “vast nothingness” of
an expressway can lead to highway hypnosis. If your eyelids feel heavy or your mind begins to drift, pull over at the nearest station for a stretch or a quick power nap. Remember: the destination isn’t going anywhere.
2. Master Your Route
Planning your path is vital, especially for distant destinations. Check your route a day in advance for potential road closures or construction.
“To truly elevate the experience, maximize your car’s infotainment system. Apps like Spotify allow multiple users to contribute to a shared queue, making
the music a collaborative effort.”
In the Philippines, you must also account for the two main toll operators. Since they use different RFID systems, verify which ones you need and ensure your accounts are sufficiently funded. Most expressways no longer have dedicated cash lanes; the final lane is often reserved for those needing to install a new pass or settle an insufficient balance, which can cause significant delays.
Furthermore, download your route for offline use. Mobile data can be “flaky” in mountain passes, dense tunnels, or remote provinces. By saving an offline map on your GPS app, you’ll stay on track even when your bars disappear.
3. Keep Emergency Contacts Handy
Knowing your route also means knowing who to call if things go sideways. Keep emergency
numbers for your destination and the expressways you’ll be traversing on speed dial.
One major advantage of the expressway system is the availability of roadside assistance. Most operators offer free towing to the nearest exit or gas station in the event of a major breakdown. For travel on local roads, note the gas stations along your route as you study your map. Just in case you can’t reach one, always ensure your car is equipped with a basic emergency kit and tools.
4. Pack the Snacks and Curate the Soundtrack
A road trip is about the journey, not just the arrival, so make the “in-between” time fun. Pack a variety of snacks to keep energy levels up and help the driver stay alert.
To truly elevate the experience, maximize your car’s infotainment system. Apps like Spotify allow multiple users to contribute to a shared queue, making the music a collaborative effort. If your vehicle supports Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you can even find apps that feature car-safe games or karaokestyle lyrics for your passengers to enjoy.
Remember, the number one purpose of a road trip is to have fun and enjoy the open road! So do yourself a favor: Relax and enjoy the ride.

2026 MITSUBISHI DESTINATOR GT
The Mitsubishi Destinator enters the local market as a seven-seater SUV clearly shaped by Philippine driving realities. It is designed to handle the daily grind of city traffic and unpredictable road conditions without drama. I tested the Destinator GT over several days, approaching it with a perspective shaped by long years of Mitsubishi ownership and time spent around weekend rally events.
Coming from years behind the wheel of a Montero Sport, I tend to pay attention to initial comfort, how consistently a vehicle behaves, and how well it holds together over extended use.
DESIGN
From the outset, the Destinator communicates its purpose clearly. It has the proportions of a proper seven-seater, offering a reassuring road presence without feeling unwieldy. The 214mm ground clearance is immediately noticeable; as someone who frequently drives out of town, I know this isn’t a luxury—it’s a requirement for local terrain.
The GT variant adds a layer of refinement with its two-tone Quartz White Pearl and black roof. Inside, the driving position is upright and commanding—a trait I’ve always appreciated in my Montero Sport. While the DNA is different, the ergonomic “honesty” of a Mitsubishi remains. The GT’s synthetic leather and panoramic sunroof add a premium touch to a cabin that remains, at its heart, a practical tool.
HARDWARE
Under the hood, the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and CVT deliver 163ps and 250Nm of torque. From an engineering standpoint, the tuning feels deliberate. Having spent time around performance-tuned rally cars, I can appreciate when a manufacturer prioritizes a smooth, predictable power band over peaky, erratic delivery.
The GT offers five drive modes (Normal, Wet, Gravel, Tarmac, and Mud). While I don’t approach this SUV like a rally car, having that electronic flexibility is invaluable when transitioning from city asphalt to unpredictable provincial surfaces. The Mitsubishi Motors Safety Sensing suite also deserves
mention; it provides a layer of driver support that significantly reduces fatigue on the long hauls I’ve grown accustomed to in my larger SUVs.
USER EXPERIENCE
In daily Metro Manila driving, the Destinator is easy to live with. The steering is light and the visibility is excellent, making it far less stressful to maneuver than its larger siblings. On the highway, the engine stays composed and the cabin remains quiet—a testament to improved insulation.
Passenger comfort across all three rows holds up well. On my test run, the Mitsubishi Smartphone Link Display provided seamless navigation and monitoring, which is a real advantage for long-distance travel. We managed a healthy 12.5 km/L during expressway cruising, proving that this seven-seater can be a practical, long-term companion for the Filipino family.
VALUE
With the GT variant priced at PHP1,939,000 (PHP 1,954,000 for Quartz White Pearl color), the cost is easier to justify when you look at it through the lens of long-term ownership. Mitsubishi has a reputation for building “tanks,” and the Destinator feels like it belongs in that lineage.
The added safety tech, drive modes, and refined interior aren’t just cosmetic upgrades—they are functional improvements that you will appreciate every single day for the next ten years. For a buyer transitioning from a sedan or looking for a more urban-friendly alternative to a mid-sized SUV, the value proposition is high.
BOTTOM LINE
The Mitsubishi Destinator GT is a well-judged SUV designed for realworld conditions. It doesn’t try to be exciting for the sake of it. Instead, it offers quiet confidence, thoughtful engineering, and everyday usability. As someone who appreciates the balance required in performance driving and the ruggedness of the Montero Sport, I find the Destinator GT to be a sophisticated evolution of the brand’s dependable character.

Honda CR-V Unveils New Lineup with Hybrid Variants
The brand’s flagship SUV builds on its proven platform with e:HEV power, smarter tech, and broader lifestyle appeal for Filipino drivers
The Honda CR-V enters its next chapter with a refreshed lineup that places hybrid technology front and center. With the introduction of two e:HEV full hybrid variants, the CR-V strengthens its role as Honda’s most versatile SUV, balancing efficiency, performance, and everyday usability without departing from the qualities that have made it a longstanding favorite.
While not a ground-up redesign, the latest CR-V continues on its sixthgeneration platform, now enhanced with expanded electrification, upgraded features, and deeper digital integration for the Philippine market. According to Honda Cars Philippines, Inc., the updated lineup reflects the brand’s push to make hybrid mobility more accessible while retaining the CR-V’s reputation for comfort and reliability.
Three Variants, Distinct Mobility Profiles
The new CR-V lineup is designed around three clear use cases.
At the top of the range is the CR-V 2.0 RS e:HEV AWD E-CVT, a premium hybrid SUV that combines electrified efficiency with Real-Time All-Wheel Drive. It is aimed at drivers who juggle city commutes, business travel, and weekend getaways, offering added traction, stability, and a more dynamic driving character.
The CR-V 2.0 VX e:HEV E-CVT delivers a quieter and more comfortoriented hybrid experience. It prioritizes refinement, fuel efficiency, and advanced technology, making it well suited for daily urban driving and longer provincial trips.
Completing the lineup is the CR-V 1.5 V Turbo HuNT CVT, the sole gasolinepowered variant. With a sportier personality and rugged styling cues unique to the local market, it caters to drivers who prefer a more aggressive driving feel while retaining the CR-V’s everyday practicality.
Hybrid Power That Works in Real Life
Both hybrid variants use Honda’s 2.0-liter Direct Injection Atkinsoncycle engine paired with a dual-motor e:HEV system. The gasoline engine produces 148PS and 183Nm of torque, while the electric motors deliver
184PS and 335Nm, resulting in smooth, responsive acceleration and improved efficiency.
Fuel economy figures underline the benefits of the system. Under UNR101 testing, the VX e:HEV records 29.4km/L in urban conditions, while the RS e:HEV AWD achieves 21.3km/L. These gains translate to fewer fuel stops and lower running costs for daily driving.
The RS e:HEV AWD further stands out with Real-Time All-Wheel Drive, which actively distributes power to enhance grip and stability, especially on wet roads or uneven surfaces.
For drivers opting for the turbocharged variant, the 1.5-liter DOHC DirectInjected engine delivers 190PS and 240Nm, offering strong highway performance and confident overtaking, with fuel efficiency rated at 16.4km/L under extra-urban conditions.
Safety, Comfort, and Driver Confidence
Across all variants, the CR-V comes equipped with Honda SENSING, providing a comprehensive suite of driver-assist features, including collision mitigation and adaptive cruise functions. Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor further support safer lane changes and parking maneuvers.
Interior upgrades add to the premium feel. All variants feature black leather seats, with the RS model distinguished by red stitching and RS accents. Notably, the Head-Up Display, previously exclusive to the RS, is now also available on the VX hybrid variant. Both e:HEV models also gain Individual Driving Mode, allowing drivers to personalize vehicle response based on preference and road conditions.
A More Connected CR-V
Digital integration plays a bigger role in the new lineup. The CR-V now features Google Built-in, enabling handsfree access to navigation, media, and supported apps. This is complemented
by Honda CONNECT, which allows owners to monitor vehicle status and access select functions remotely via smartphone.
To support long-term ownership, Honda backs the hybrid variants with an eight-year or 160,000-kilometer hybrid battery warranty, reinforcing confidence in its electrified technology.
A Familiar SUV, Now More Future-Ready
With its expanded hybrid lineup, the Honda CR-V evolves into a more efficient, connected, and adaptable SUV without losing its core strengths. It remains familiar in form and comfort, but more forward-looking in how it addresses fuel efficiency, safety, and digital convenience.
The result is a CR-V that feels well prepared for today’s mobility needs, offering Filipino drivers a practical entry point into hybrid ownership while continuing the model’s legacy as one of Honda’s most trusted nameplates.
The Suzuki Jimny Gets Smarter
The Suzuki Jimny 3-Door has long built its reputation on rugged capability, compact agility, and unmistakable boxy styling. For 2026, the iconic 4x4 adds a new layer of intelligence with the integration of Suzuki Safety Support, enhancing everyday confidence without compromising its trail-ready DNA.
This latest update positions the Jimny not only as a go-anywhere adventure vehicle, but also as a more reassuring companion for daily drives and extended highway trips.
Advanced Driver Assistance Comes to the Jimny
At the core of the update is Suzuki Safety Support, a suite of preventive safety technologies designed to help avoid collisions and reduce driver fatigue.
The system includes Dual Sensor Brake Support II (DSBS II), which uses a camera and laser sensor to detect vehicles or pedestrians ahead. When
a potential collision is identified, the system issues audio and visual warnings and can automatically apply the brakes if needed. Suzuki notes that DSBS II’s performance depends on the capability of its sensors, and drivers should continue practicing attentive and responsible driving at all times.
Also available across all new Jimny 3-Door variants is Adaptive Cruise Control, which uses radar and camera inputs to maintain a preset speed while automatically adjusting acceleration and braking based on traffic flow.
Additional confidence-enhancing features include:
• Lane Departure Prevention, which provides subtle steering assistance when the vehicle begins to drift
• Lane Departure Warning, offering audio, visual, and steering feedback alerts
• Weaving Alert, which monitors unusual drifting patterns and warns the driver
• High Beam Assist, which automatically switches between high and low beams at speeds
of 30km/h and above when the headlamp switch is set to auto
Together, these systems bring modern driver-assist technology to one of the most traditional off-road nameplates in the segment.
Practical Upgrades Inside
Beyond safety, the Jimny 3-Door also receives meaningful interior and convenience enhancements.

XIAOMI SU7 ULTRA DEBUTS IN Gaming
The line between virtual simulation and asphalt reality just got a lot thinner. For decades, the Gran Turismo franchise has served as the ultimate digital proving ground for the world’s most elite automotive engineering. Now, racing enthusiasts and tech aficionados alike are buzzing from the landmark debut of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, which officially roared onto the digital tracks of Gran Turismo 7 on January 29, 2026.
A Digital Benchmark for Real-World Power
The inclusion of the SU7 Ultra in the “Update 1.67” patch marks more than just a new car to collect; it is Xiaomi’s first-ever entry into the storied franchise. Known for hyperrealistic physics and a stringent selection process, Gran Turismo only opens its garage doors to vehicles that push the boundaries of performance.
Under its virtual hood, the SU7 Ultra replicates the staggering specs of its real-world counterpart:
• Xiaomi Hyper Tri-Motor System: An in-house developed Dual V8s + V6s configuration.
• Raw Power: An output of 1,548 horsepower.
• Elite Acceleration: A 0–100km/h sprint achieved in a mere 1.98 seconds.
This is the same high-performance machine that shattered records at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a lap time of 7:04.957 and becoming the fastest electric executive vehicle to tackle the “Green Hell”.
Engineering Authenticity
The collaboration between Xiaomi and Polyphony Digital was not a simple exchange of CAD files. To ensure every virtual corner felt authentic, series producer Kazunori Yamauchi test-drove the SU7 Ultra across iconic locations, including Beijing and the Nürburgring.
In a rare move for a tech-first company, Xiaomi EV’s vehicle dynamics performance team traveled to Polyphony Digital’s studio in Fukuoka. Their mission: final driving experience validation to ensure that the virtual SU7 Ultra handles with the same prowess as the high-performance luxury car found on actual roads.
Take the Monza Challenge
The “Human × Car × Home” Strategy
This gaming debut is a strategic extension of Xiaomi’s “Human × Car × Home” ecosystem. Since upgrading its strategy in 2023, Xiaomi has sought to seamlessly merge personal devices, smart home technology, and automotive engineering into a single connected experience.
By bringing the SU7 Ultra to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xiaomi is connecting with a global community of users, staying true to its vision of being the “coolest company in the users’ hearts” while pursuing relentless innovation.
For those who haven’t yet mastered this electric beast, the opportunity to make history remains open. To celebrate the launch, Polyphony Digital is hosting a two-week official lap-time challenge on the historic Monza circuit in Gran Turismo 7. It is an invitation for players worldwide to experience the high-velocity future of the Xiaomi brand from the comfort of their own racing cockpits.
Whether you are a seasoned sim-racer or a fan of cutting-edge EV technology, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has officially arrived, proving that the future of driving is as thrilling on the screen as it is on the street.
YOUR AI CARICATURE MAY REVEAL TOO MUCH
Kaspersky warns that viral “create a caricature using everything you know about me” prompts could expose users to identity theft and targeted scams.
Anew AI trend is circulating across Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn: users upload a photo and ask artificial intelligence tools to generate a caricature based on their life, their job, and “everything the AI knows” about them. The results are playful and highly personalized—animated versions of professionals at their desks, parents with their families, or entrepreneurs surrounded by symbols of their industry.
But behind the creative appeal lies a growing cybersecurity concern.
According to Kaspersky, this trend may unintentionally expose sensitive personal information, making users more vulnerable to identity impersonation and social engineering attacks.
It’s Not Just a Filter
Unlike a simple photo effect, these AI prompts often encourage users to provide detailed context. To make the illustration more accurate, users frequently share their company name, job title, corporate logos, city, routines, hobbies, and even family details.
Each of these pieces of information contributes to building a more complete digital profile. When combined with a photo, they can reveal patterns about a person’s workplace, responsibilities, frequently visited places, and personal relationships.
This type of contextual exposure can make fraudulent messages far more convincing. A scam email that references someone’s employer, mentions a real family member, or reflects their daily routine is significantly more likely to be trusted. According to Kaspersky’s Digital Language study, nearly one in four users in Latin America admit they do not know how to recognize a fake email or message, increasing the risk of successful fraud. The concern goes beyond the image itself. When interacting with AI platforms, users may also be sharing additional data depending on the service’s privacy policies. This can include the original photo, written prompts, usage history, and technical details such as IP address, device type, or interaction patterns.
“The biggest risk is not the illustration itself, but everything people reveal to obtain it,” says Leandro Cuozzo, security analyst from Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team in Latin America. “When someone shares details about their work, their family, or their routine, they are unknowingly providing information that can be used for highly targeted fraud or identity impersonation.”
Over time, small disclosures accumulate. A job title here, a company logo there, a photo taken in front of a recognizable building. For cybercriminals, these fragments can be assembled into a highly detailed profile that supports phishing attempts, identity theft, or financial scams.
How to Participate More Safely
AI-powered creativity is not inherently dangerous. However, cybersecurity experts recommend more cautious digital habits when engaging with trends that request personal context.
Kaspersky advises users to:
• Avoid including identifiable data in prompts, such as full name, job title, company, city, address, schedules, or daily routines.
• Refrain from uploading photos that show logos, ID badges, documents, license plates, screens, or recognizable building façades.
• Never share information or images of minors or reveal family details that could be used in emotional manipulation scams.
• Review the platform’s privacy policy and data retention practices before uploading content.
• Complement caution with active digital protection tools that can detect malicious links, phishing attempts, and unsafe downloads.
The Cumulative Exposure Problem
Some of this information may be retained to operate the service, improve performance, or train AI models. In other words, the content may not disappear once the caricature is generated, and its long-term storage may not always be clear to users.
Creativity with Boundaries
The appeal of AI caricatures lies in personalization. The risk lies in oversharing.
In an era where digital fraud increasingly relies on tailored deception rather than mass spam, every piece of context becomes valuable. What may seem like harmless fun can provide scammers with the credibility they need to craft convincing impersonation attempts.
Before typing “use everything you know about me,” it may be worth asking a different question: how much should a machine—and potentially the internet—really know?
AI at Scale, With Humans at the Center
Grab Philippines pilots a consent-driven Driver AI Ambassador Program that puts real people at the heart of AI-powered storytelling
On January 23, 2026, Grab Philippines introduced a pilot initiative that offers a thoughtful take on how companies can use generative AI responsibly. The Driver AI Ambassador Program reworks the traditional brand ambassador model by placing driver-partners, not career influencers, at the center of its storytelling.
The concept is straightforward. Grab begins with real stories. Driver-partners share interviews, recorded voice clips, photos, and personal experiences about safety, family, community, and their livelihood on the platform. From a single human-led session, AI tools help transform this material into multiple short-form videos and social media assets. The scale comes from AI. The substance comes from people.
Jewel Oliveros, head of integrated marketing services and brand marketing at Grab Philippines, explains that the goal is to shift influence to those who live the brand every day. AI supports the process, but the voice and perspective remain authentically theirs.
Creating Opportunity, Not Just Content
For participating driver-partners, the program is more than a marketing experiment. It is also an opportunity.
Patrick Pidlawan Duque, a PWD GrabFood delivery-partner, shared that being featured allows him to tell his story and gain visibility. The initiative offers industry-standard compensation, effectively creating an additional income stream for those who choose to participate.
From an enterprise standpoint, this approach blends workforce engagement
with structured content production. It acknowledges that authentic narratives hold value and builds a compensation model around that value.
Built-In Safeguards
Grab’s pilot places governance at the core of execution. Participation is based on informed consent. Driver-partners are briefed on how their stories, voices, and likenesses may be used, and they retain the right to opt out at any time. Human oversight remains part of the workflow to protect nuance and avoid misrepresentation. All AI-enabled outputs carry clear disclosures to ensure transparency.
The program also aligns with the principles of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, as outlined in its Venice Pledge, which calls for ethical, transparent, and human-centered AI use in communications.
Enterprise Takeaway
Grab’s pilot demonstrates a pragmatic enterprise blueprint:
• Human-originated data capture
• AI-driven content scaling
• Structured consent and disclosure frameworks
• Compensation models aligned with value creation
Rather than positioning AI as a creative disruptor, the Driver AI Ambassador Program frames it as an operational accelerator, expanding output capacity while preserving narrative integrity.
For organizations navigating AI adoption in communications, the message is precise. Scale is achievable, but trust remains the primary currency.
KNOWING ISN'T ENOUGH
Closing the gap between mental health awareness and real support
Mental health is no longer a taboo topic in the Philippines. More Filipinos are openly talking about anxiety, burnout, and emotional wellbeing. But while awareness is rising, many still hesitate when it comes to taking action.
According to the latest AXA Mind Health Study, 65% of Filipinos say they are aware of mental health issues—placing the country among the highest globally in terms of awareness. Yet only about a third say they know what to actually do when they or someone close to them faces a mental health challenge.
That gap between recognition and response is where many people get stuck.
Awareness Isn’t the Finish Line
“Awareness without action leaves people vulnerable,” says Paula Ferrer Cheng, head of research and development at Mind You, AXA Philippines’ partner in mental health. Recognizing signs of anxiety or emotional distress is important, but knowing the next step— whether that means seeking help, adjusting daily habits, or reaching out to someone—is what truly makes a difference.
The study also found that individuals who consider themselves well-informed about mental health—those who understand warning signs, available support, and how to respond—are significantly more likely to report positive mental wellbeing outcomes. In short, knowledge empowers resilience.
Ayman Kandil, CEO of AXA Philippines, underscores the importance of practical support. Real progress, he says, happens when people know they can take action with the right resources.
A Practical Starting Point
To help bridge the gap, AXA launched the free and anonymous Mind Health Self-Check tool, a digital assessment designed to give individuals a clearer understanding of their emotional wellbeing.
The tool evaluates three areas of life:
• Current State of Mind
• Skills and Beliefs
• Lifestyle
After answering guided questions, users receive a Mind Health Index score ranging from 0 to 100. The score falls into one of four categories:
• Flourishing (68+) – Strong emotional, social, and psychological wellbeing
• Getting By (57–68) – Stable, but not fully thriving
• L anguishing (43–57) – Low motivation and reduced wellbeing
The purpose isn’t to label, but to provide clarity. When individuals understand where they stand, they are better equipped to decide what kind of support or lifestyle adjustments may help.
Separate findings from Mind You reveal that, among over 15,000 employees surveyed, the top reason for seeking help was simply the need for someone to talk to. Not a diagnosis. Not medication. Just conversation.
With 80% of help-seeking driven by emotional distress rather than clinical conditions, the message is clear: safe spaces, early intervention, and accessible resources matter.
Moving Forward
Mental health conversations have grown louder and more open in recent years. But the next step is making sure people know what to do when challenges arise.
Whether it’s taking a self-assessment, seeking counseling, or simply starting a conversation, turning awareness into action may be the most important wellness move Filipinos can make this year.
The Power of Connection
THE TASTE MATRIX: YOUR GUIDE TO
REFINED PERCEPTION
Words by Aljhelyn Piador
PRODUCT LITERACY
Having taste isn’t about buying expensive things. It’s about knowing what’s actually worth choosing.
Product literacy = knowing how to spot quality before the hype tells you to buy.
READ LABELS & SPECS
People with taste read the fine print. Labels and technical specs are not just text; they are data you can use.
Studies show that clear product information (ingredients, materials, specifications) increases buyer confidence and leads to better decisions.
Example:
• Material grade
• Warranty terms
• Component specs
• Origin or manufacturing method
These details reduce consumer confusion that is a known issue where lack of clarity leads to poor or rushed decision‑making.
PATTERN RECOGNITION & COMPARISON
• Compare products side by side to train discernment
• Active evaluation builds internal standards of quality
• Repeated exposure to good vs mediocre items strengthens judgment
Cognitive psychology research: the “testing effect” improves long term retention and discrimination.
MULTI-SENSORY & CULTURAL AWARENESS
• Smell, texture, and context influence product perception
• Understanding cultural and historical context deepens appreciation
• Expertise in one domain (music, art, design) transfers to others, enhancing cross domain taste
Studies show exposure to diverse experiences expands aesthetic judgment beyond algorithmic comfort
COST-PER-USE MINDSET
Instead of asking: “Is this cheap?” Ask: “How many times will I actually use this?”
Academic frameworks in consumer behavior highlight that considered use value (functional + emotional + social value) predicts how long a product stays useful in real life, and this influences satisfaction over time.
Higher initial cost can still be a better value if the product continues to deliver over the years.
PACKAGING & PERCEIVED QUALITY
Packaging isn’t just decoration; it communicates a product’s promise and quality cues.
Studies confirm that packaging color, design, and information directly influence how consumers judge product quality and make purchase decisions.
But remember: appeal isn’t the same as performance.
This time, we choose with intention. Less impulse buying. More discernment. More taste.
INTELLECTUAL MEDIA CONSUMPTION
Real taste isn’t just in what you buy. It’s in what you consume.
• Example: 70% documentaries, essays, and long form literature; 30% memes or trending clips.
Overexposure to passive content dulls judgment. Intentional balance develops refined taste over time.
NOTICE PACING & STRUCTURE, NOT JUST STORY
• Pay attention to how a story is told: scene timing, editing rhythm, narrative arcs, or writing flow.
• Example: In films, notice the build up and payoff. In books, observe how chapters unfold tension.
Subtle craftsmanship often distinguishes high quality media from mediocre content, even if the surface story seems simple.
USE “TIME-SHIFTED CONSUMPTION”
• Revisit content after a week, a month, or longer to notice subtleties you initially missed.
• Example: Rewatch a movie or reread a chapter to see new details.
Delayed engagement improves memory retention and deepens understanding, training your brain to notice nuance.
CONSUME “CONTRAST CONTENT”
• Purposefully explore media with perspectives or styles opposite to your usual taste.
• Example: If you usually read contemporary fiction, try philosophy essays or historical documentaries.
This challenges your assumptions, improves nuance recognition, and sharpens critical thinking. Research in cognitive flexibility shows exposure to opposing viewpoints strengthens judgment and empathy.
ENGAGE WITH META-CONTENT
• Study analysis, critiques, or reviews of the media itself.
• Example: Watch a film review explaining cinematography choices or read an essay analyzing a novel’s structure.
Understanding why something works trains your taste markers faster than passive consumption.
SHORT-FORM CONTENT TEACHES COMPRESSION SKILLS
• Even TikTok or Instagram Reels showcase storytelling, emotion, and visual design in seconds.
• Example: Analyze how a creator conveys mood, narrative, or humor quickly.
• Reflect on how content relates to your culture, environment, or personal life.
• Example: Compare a film’s societal themes to your own community or historical context.
• Why it works: Contextualization builds depth, critical thinking, and a more personal, refined taste
Now, start consuming like you mean it. Train your brain to enjoy with intention.
Lifestyle
CURATED EXPERIENCE
Taste isn’t just what you like, but knowing which experiences deserve your time, attention, and presence.
Build a mental “filter” for experiences that add long term value.
CONTEXT MATTERS
• Experiences become richer when you understand their story, purpose, or history.
• Example: Visiting a historical site is more meaningful if you know its background; tasting a dish is deeper if you know its cultural roots.
• Understanding context helps you differentiate between superficial appeal and meaningful depth.
Research shows contextual knowledge strengthens appreciation and long term preference formation.
EMOTIONAL ROI
just the immediate excitement.
• Consider the lasting emotional effect of an experience, not attention.
• Did it inspire reflection, new ideas, or subtle joy? Or did it fade as soon as you left?
• Example: A live performance that moves you to think differently or connects you with others has more value than a flashy but forgettable show.
Psychology research shows that experiences that evoke lasting emotion are more likely to shape taste and memory.
LIMIT OVERLOAD
• Too many experiences dilute your ability to notice subtlety and depth.
• Focus on fewer, high value experiences and invest your full attention.
• Example: Choose 2–3 impactful events a week rather than 10 minor distractions.
Behavioral studies show curated selection enhances satisfaction and taste development.
TIME IS THE ULTIMATE FILTER
• Time is limited; choosing where to invest it is the first step to refined taste.
• Ask yourself: Will this experience teach me, inspire me, or leave a lasting impression?
• Example: A crowded viral festival may be fun for a few hours but rarely adds to your knowledge or perspective.
Research shows intentional time allocation improves satisfaction and long term skill acquisition.
HYPE VS. DEPTH
• Not everything trending or highly Instagrammable is worth your
• L ook for experiences that offer layers, craft, and meaning rather than instant gratification.
• Example: Instead of queuing for a viral café, explore a small, thoughtfully designed local space that tells a story.
Studies indicate repeated exposure to meaningful, high quality experiences builds a more refined taste than chasing trends.
OBSERVE EFFORT AND CRAFT
• B ehind every memorable experience is intentional design, curation, or skill.
• L ook for attention to detail in environments, events, or products. This is a marker of quality.
• Example: A well curated exhibit or thoughtfully organized event demonstrates mastery that your mind will recognize subconsciously.
Cultural studies show recognition of craft and effort is central to developing refined taste.
REFLECT AND RANK
• After each experience, reflect: Did it matter? Will I remember it? Would I recommend it?
• Maintain a personal “hierarchy of experiences” to guide future choices.
• Reflection transforms passive participation into intentional taste building.
Cognitive psychology: reflection strengthens judgment and long term memory of value.
ALIGN WITH YOUR VALUES
• Experiences aligned with your values or interests compound growth.
• Popularity or aesthetic appeal doesn’t equal meaningfulness.
• Example: A workshop or cultural event that aligns with your curiosity or passion will be more impactful than a hyped but irrelevant experience.
Cultural capital grows when attention is intentional and value aligned.
Know what experiences deserve your time. Your attention is your most valuable resource; invest it with discernment.
VISUAL AESTHETIC AWARENESS
Visual aesthetic awareness is the skill of perceiving subtle patterns, harmony, intention, and contrast in your environment, so that taste becomes instinctive.
MICRO VS MACRO PERCEPTION
• Micro: lines, texture, materials, finishes, small visual patterns
• Why it matters: Seeing only details misses context; seeing only context misses craft. True visual taste integrates both.
• Exercise: Observe a space or object, noting textures and finishes, then step back to absorb the overall form and flow.
CONTRAST AND VISUAL TENSION
• Tension creates intrigue: unusual color pairings, asymmetry, or unexpected placement.
• Example: minimalist room with one bold accent; a poster with deliberate imbalance.
• Why it matters: Recognizing deliberate tension trains judgment beyond “pretty vs ugly.”
COLOR, TONE, AND HARMONY
• Observe relationships between hues, saturation, and brightness.
• Example: warm lighting evokes intimacy, and muted tones feel calm and refined.
• Why it matters: Harmonious color and tone guide mood, perception, and emotional impact, essential to visual taste.
INTENTION AND CRAFT
• Ask: Is this design or composition purposeful, or accidental?
• Example: the spacing in typography, alignment in a layout, or detail in a handmade object.
• Why it matters: Noticing intentionality helps separate shallow visuals from thoughtful design.
LAYERED MEANING AND SYMBOLISM
• Visual elements often carry subtle references: cultural, historical, or metaphorical.
• Example: a painting referencing multiple art movements; an interior reflecting heritage and modernity.
• Why it matters: Recognizing layers develops depth of perception and aesthetic sophistication.
CONTEXT, PERSPECTIVE, AND TEMPORAL AWARENESS
• Visual perception changes with angle, distance, light, and time.
• Example: a sculpture looks different from above; a room’s lighting transforms mood throughout the day.
• Why it matters: Awareness of context and perspective trains nuanced judgment, seeing beyond the obvious.
Train your eye to notice intention, harmony, and subtlety everywhere. The world reveals its beauty to those who see with intention.
Modular, Delivered
How Hive Modular is accelerating sustainable housing and resort development in the Philippines
When building a home, time is often the first thing homeowners underestimate and the hardest to recover once construction begins. Schedules stretch. Costs rise. Move-in dates shift. What starts as an exciting project can quickly become stressful.
For resort developers, the pressure is even greater. Every month of delay means postponed openings, deferred revenue, and higher financing costs.
This is the problem that Hive Modular set out to solve.
Hive Modular roof
Hive Modular model
From Delays to Delivery
Hive moves the most complex parts of construction into a controlled factory environment. Structural systems are engineered and built off-site under tightly managed conditions, where quality checks, material usage, and timelines can be monitored with precision.
Instead of relying entirely on unpredictable on-site work, much of the heavy lifting is completed before components even arrive at the property. The result is a home or hospitality unit delivered with greater consistency and fewer surprises.
“Our goal at Hive Modular is to give every project a sense of individuality,” says founder and CEO John Avrett. “By shifting the most complex work offsite, construction becomes calmer and significantly faster. No material is wasted. No temporary fixes are needed. Modular does not mean generic. It means intentional, efficient, and personal.”
Building Sustainably, Building Smarter
The factory model is not only about speed. It is also about sustainability. Producing structural components in
a controlled environment allows for tighter material management and less waste. Precision fabrication reduces the need for costly rework and corrective demolition, which often adds both expense and environmental impact to traditional builds.
By anchoring production in a manufacturing facility, Hive also supports high-skilled jobs in engineering, fabrication, and construction. The approach strengthens local technical capabilities while helping meet the growing demand for durable, scalable housing solutions.
Founded by architects, engineers, and industry veterans with experience in construction, logistics, diplomacy,
and real estate development, Hive sees modular construction as more than a building method. It is a response to the need for high-quality, sustainable homes and hospitality spaces delivered on realistic timelines.
Designed for Place, Built for Scale
A common question about modular construction is whether a factory-built home can truly feel personal. Hive’s answer lies in shifting focus. When the structural framework is completed off-site, owners can spend more time shaping what makes a space unique. Interiors, materials, landscaping, and cultural details become the priority.
For resorts, modular villas and casitas can be manufactured with precision, shipped efficiently, and assembled on site in significantly less time. The structure is prepared in the factory. The destination defines the character.
In a property market where timelines, sustainability, and capital efficiency matter more than ever, Hive Modular presents a practical alternative. Faster delivery does not have to mean sacrificing quality or sense of place.

Building Light with Geofoam
Why developers are turning to lightweight solutions in Philippine construction
Whe construction landscape in the Philippines is evolving. Projects are becoming more performance-driven, and developers and engineers are placing greater emphasis on materials that support tighter timelines, structural efficiency, and precise design requirements.
One material drawing increased attention is geofoam—an engineered lightweight fill used in applications where weight control and predictability are critical.
According to Next Century Building Systems (NCBS), interest in geofoam has grown as project teams look for
ways to introduce volume and elevation without imposing unnecessary loads on structures and foundations.
“Lightweight materials are not about replacing traditional methods,” said Jay Ong, president of NCBS. “They are about using the right material for the right function. Geofoam is being evaluated because it allows designers to achieve specific outcomes that would be difficult or inefficient with heavier alternatives.”
Where Geofoam Fits
Manufactured in block form, geofoam is used in construction scenarios
where reducing structural demand is a priority. Its low density allows engineers to create height, grading, and architectural form without significantly increasing pressure on supporting elements.
In the Philippine context, geofoam is currently being evaluated and applied across several project types:
• Site development – Achieving required elevations and grading without adding excessive load
• Structural load reduction –Minimizing pressure on foundations in constrained or sensitive sites
• Architectural features – Podiums, ramps, and landscaped decks requiring volume but controlled weight
• Infrastructure-related works –Applications where predictability and streamlined installation matter
Rather than serving a single niche, geofoam is increasingly positioned as a versatile system adaptable to specific site conditions and design intent.
Design Control and Predictability
Unlike traditional fill materials that can vary in density and compaction behavior, geofoam is manufactured under controlled conditions. This consistency allows engineers to work
with defined material properties during the design stage.
“Predictability matters,” said Irene Sinoy, sales manager at NCBS. “In construction, there are already many uncontrollable factors. Knowing how a material behaves before it reaches the site gives developers greater control over outcomes. Geofoam provides project teams with added confidence when coordinating between design, engineering, and construction.”
A Complementary Material
Geofoam is not intended to replace conventional construction materials. Instead, it is evaluated as a complementary solution—used selectively in applications where lightweight performance offers a clear technical advantage.
As Philippine developments become more complex and time-sensitive, materials that support flexibility, efficiency, and performance predictability are being considered earlier in the planning process. For companies with local technical capability, such as NCBS, geofoam systems form part of a broader suite of building solutions adapted to Philippine codes, climate conditions, and project requirements.

ADB, GCASH FUSE PARTNER TO UNLOCK INCLUSIVE FINANCE FOR MSMES AND WOMEN
Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and women entrepreneurs across the Philippines are set to gain significantly better financial access after the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a PHP1.75 billion (USD30 million) loan facility to Fuse Financing Inc., the lending arm of GCash, the country’s leading finance superapp and largest cashless ecosystem.
This first-of-its-kind partnership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region was officially launched on February 6 at the SMX Convention Center in Taguig City with the theme “Driving Inclusive Finance for Filipino MSMEs” and was witnessed by over 250 MSMEs, including sari-sari store and carinderia owners and women entrepreneurs. This milestone
collaboration enables Fuse to expand its lending portfolio and scale access to credit for the country’s most critical economic drivers.
MSMEs are a cornerstone of the Philippine economy, accounting for around 40% of the gross domestic product and 63% of total employment. According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), there are 1.24 million registered business establishments as of 2024, over 99 percent of which are micro, small, and medium enterprises.
Yet, access to financing remains a key barrier. According to an ADB study, access to credit and capital ranks as the second most significant challenge for MSMEs, after access to markets. With such a financial challenge, it
takes less than 12 months for a small business to shut down operations.
“This fintech partnership is the firstof-its kind for ADB in the ASEAN region and marks a significant step in advancing financial inclusion in the Philippines,” said Isabel Chatterton, Director General, Private Sector Operations Department of Asian Development Bank. “By combining Fuse’s digital reach with ADB’s development financing, we are building an inclusive digital financial ecosystem that expands access to finance for women-led and rural enterprises across the country.”
“We value our partnership with ADB as it strengthens our ability to expand access to credit for MSMEs and women entrepreneurs, who are underserved by the market. By
[L-R] Acting Regional director Jay Acar, Department of Trade and Industry; Martha Sazon, president and CEO of Mynt, the parent company of GCash; Secretary Cristina Roque, Department of Trade and Industry; Tony Isidro, president and CEO of Fuse Financing Inc.; Christine Engstrom, director General for Sectors Department 3 in Finance of the Asian Development Bank; and Subhashini Chandran, SVP, Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth.
combining our shared expertise and digital reach, we are advancing financial inclusion and helping more Filipinos grow their businesses,” Mynt President and CEO Martha Sazon said.
ADB will also provide up to $125,000 in technical assistance to help Fuse Financing develop tailored financial products and deliver financial and digital literacy training for women, especially those with limited formal education. This aligns with the broader push of ADB and GCash for digital finance and inclusion across Asia and the Pacific.
Complementing ADB’s financing, the Mastercard Impact Fund, with support from the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth also extended a catalytic funding to support Fuse in effectively reaching and serving the priority MSME segments.
Fuse Financing Inc. President and CEO Tony Isidro underscored the significance of this partnership especially in supporting Fuse’s mission of delivering fair loans and expanding inclusive credit access for underserved Filipinos.
“Through our partnership with ADB, with additional support from the Mastercard Impact Fund, we are strengthening our mission to make credit accessible to every Filipino who needs it most,” Isidro said. “This investment enables us to accelerate our support for women entrepreneurs and small businesses in underserved areas, sectors with immense potential to drive the country’s long-term growth,” he added.
“This collaboration brings together catalytic capital, digital infrastructure and inclusive design to unlock new pathways for financial security. By working with Fuse Financing and the Asian Development Bank to extend credit to underserved entrepreneurs, we are ensuring that
growth in the digital economy is fair and sustainable,” said Subhashini Chandran, senior vice president, Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth.
To commemorate this partnership, 10 MSMEs nominated by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) were awarded with capitalization support to help advance their business operations. DTI Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque also graced the event and delivered a keynote message to all the MSMEs in attendance highlighting how synergies like this unlock growth and inclusion.
“More than the scale of financing, what makes this partnership meaningful is its intent: to ensure that capital reaches entrepreneurs who are ready to grow but have long been underserved by traditional systems. By aligning public-sector priorities with private-sector innovation, this collaboration helps widen the path to formal, fair, and sustainable access to finance for MSMEs,” Secretary Roque said in her speech.
A day of FinLit for MSMEs
Alongside this partnership launch, Fuse gathered over 250 sari-sari store owners and women entrepreneurs to experience financial literacy workshops designed to help them manage their finances better, borrow
responsibly, and build more resilient businesses.
Attendees were equipped with the knowledge to access digital loans, improve their eligibility for loan access, and practice responsible borrowing. In addition, MSMEs were taught how to integrate digital platforms into their operations to improve efficiency.
MSMEs are vital to national progress but remain underserved by traditional financial institutions. According to an ADB study, access to credit remains a most significant challenge for MSMEs. Leveraging GCash trust scoring system GSCore as part of the creditworthiness assessment, Fuse eliminates the traditional barriers to lending, with no collateral or documentary requirements needed to secure loans, enabling greater credit access for everyday Filipinos.
The ADB-Fuse partnership aims to unlock MSME’s growth potential and contribute to inclusive economic expansion. Unlike traditional financing, the capital is designed for impact, carrying firm social mandates that ensure measurable inclusion. This serves as a model for how fintech and development institutions can align with purpose, transforming financial access by ensuring that opportunity reaches those who can create lasting social and economic change.
