We are thrilled to unveil the 2026-2027 performance season, which again showcases the exceptional performance standard of the FWSO and our innovative programming. Music Director Robert Spano and I work closely together to bring some of the world’s finest artists to the Bass Hall stage, including our Principal Guest Conductor Dame Jane Glover. As ever, we are extraordinarily grateful to our Board Chairman, Mrs. Mercedes T. Bass, for her leadership, imagination, and sustained generosity.
We begin the season with a trio of Symphonic weekends conducted by Maestro Spano, as part of our exploration of music from the Classical period. Our opening weekend features the gold medal winner of the 2025 Van Cliburn International Competition, Aristo Sham, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K. 488. We break new ground in the second weekend with a transcription of the Brahms Double Concerto, arranged and performed by pianist Dejan Lazić. In the third weekend, we present Steven Stucky’s comic operetta The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts), featuring the Cafritz Young Artists of Washington National Opera directed by Peter Kazaras.
This season, we also continue with our ongoing “Theater of a Concert” strategy, in which we add additional elements to symphonic performances including dance, projections, singers, and live actors. As part of our three-year collaboration with the Kimbell Art Museum, Maestra Glover conducts a program featuring Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony No. 6 with breathtaking images of landscape paintings from the Kimbell. Following their spectacular success last season with the world premiere of the Suite from Joby Talbot’s ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Bruce Wood Dance Dallas returns with new choreography from Joy Bollinger to Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer, conducted by Robert Spano and paired with Mahler’s monumental Sixth Symphony. The Symphonic Series concludes with a world premiere of a cello concerto by Christopher Theofanidis, performed by the FWSO’s Principal Cello Allan Steele.
Our Pops Series and Special concerts are every bit as exciting. The ever-popular Pink Martini returns this season, and on our tribute band series, we feature the Music of Journey. Movie selections include The Wizard of Oz, Batman (1989), and Hook, and we showcase popular video game programs as well. And what would the season be without Home for the Holidays?

The opening four notes of Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony etched a permanent rhythm onto humanity’s consciousness. After those stormy opening notes, Beethoven leads listeners from a struggle with fate to a radiant victory through his music in one of classical music’s most triumphant works. To open the program, FWSO Music Director Robert Spano conducts another dramatic work by Beethoven, the Egmont Overture, before the 2025 Van Cliburn Piano Competition winner Aristo Sham plays Mozart’s delightful Piano Concerto No. 23.

BRAHMS: Variations on a Theme by Haydn BRAHMS: Double Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra (Piano Transcription)
HAYDN: Symphony No. 104, “London”
The composer Brahms was a savvy businessman. He used Haydn’s name to help sell his now-famous Variations on a Theme by Haydn, even though Haydn might not have written the tune. Regardless, Brahms’s variations explore the theme’s emotional depth with drama, humor, and poise. Rounding out the program are a transcription of Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra, which adapts the violin and cello parts for a solo pianist, as well as Haydn’s “London” Symphony, his farewell note to his favorite city.

Mozart cobbled together his “Haffner” Symphony from music he wrote to celebrate the young Sigmund Haffner’s ascension to nobility, instructing musicians to play “as fast as possible” in the thrilling finale. After the symphony, FWSO Music Director Robert Spano conducts American composer Steven Stucky’s The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts), a comedy in which Mozart is a character alongside other famous composers like Beethoven and Haydn, all portrayed by the talented Cafritz Young Artists of Washington National Opera.

Irritated with the bustle and bother of city life in Vienna, Beethoven found inspiration for his “Pastoral” Symphony on long, rambling walks in the countryside. The composer weaves shepherd tunes and bird calls into the music in a celebration of nature, amplified in these performances with artwork from the Kimbell Art Museum’s landscape collection. The concert opens with American composer Missy Mazzoli’s ballet suite Orpheus Undone and closes with Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, drawn from a series of poems about the mysteries of the night.

Aaron Copland was the quintessential American composer in the 20th century. Don’t miss the FWSO and conductor Tomáš Netopil’s performance of his third and final symphony, a fusion of his famous balletic style from works like Appalachian Spring and Rodeo with the European symphonic form. Also on the program are Rachmaninoff’s titanic Piano Concerto No. 2, dedicated to a hypnotist who helped the composer overcome a severe case of writer’s block, and Dvořák’s bright and festive Carnival Overture.

American violinist Stella Chen graduated from Harvard and The Juilliard School before launching an international performance career. In January, she performs Finnish composer Sibelius’ brooding Violin Concerto, which shivers with arctic beauty in its opening melodies. After intermission, Dame Jane Glover leads the FWSO in the Russian composer Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, a work originally intended to honor the Soviets’ victory over Germany in WWII that transformed into an ironically lighthearted piece by the time it premiered.

MAHLER: Songs of a Wayfarer
MAHLER: Symphony No. 6
The composer Mahler described the finale of his Symphony No. 6 as “the hero on whom fall three blows of fate, the last of which fells him, as a tree is felled.”
Sometimes called his “Tragic” Symphony, he wrote this work during a happy time in his life, after his marriage to his love Alma and the birth of his second daughter. To open the program, Bruce Wood Dance Dallas interprets another work by Mahler, the Songs of a Wayfarer song cycle, written after an earlier unhappy romantic quest.

Czech composer Dvořák infused his famous Symphony No. 8 with the melodies and rhythms of his people, building a mighty work from humble folk tunes. Popular conductor Anna Skryleva returns to Fort Worth for this performance, which also features the Violin Concerto by Erich Korngold, a composer famous for his film music to swashbucklers like Robin Hood and The Seahawk. The program opens with another Czech favorite, Bedřich Smetana’s mighty “The Moldau,” an evocative tone poem about a river that passes through the countryside.

Plus, FWSO principal cellist Allan Steele takes the spotlight in the World Premiere of a new cello concerto by American composer Cristopher Theofanidis.

Released in 1991, Hook became a global box o ce success, grossing over $300 million worldwide and earning five Academy Award nominations. Travel back to 1891 as Tchaikovsky arrives in America for the grand opening of Carnegie Hall and an unexpected journey to Niagara Falls. Tchaikovsky Discovers America blends drama, dance, and more than twenty-five musical excerpts to illuminate the composer’s life, fears, and inspirations. When Tchaikovsky meets Jennie, a young aspiring ballerina, their conversation reveals the powerful exchange between old-world tradition and America’s vibrant new energy. This 50-minute theatrical symphony experience is a captivating introduction to Tchaikovsky for young audiences and families.

COMMUNITY & EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Carnegie Hall's Link Up!
Introduces students to the orchestra through an interactive curriculum utilizing a recorder to make sound. Lessons take place in the classroom and culminates with a performance alongside the orchestra.
Open Rehearsal
Offer students a unique perspective on the creative dynamic between the orchestra and conductor. See how a performance transforms from a work in progress to a work of art.
Side by Side
Provides sectionals with FWSO musicians and a private rehearsal with the Assistant Conductor. Each student sits next to a musician who serves as their mentor in the final rehearsal and concert.
Youth Council
Unites students grades 9–12 to explore nonprofit arts management, build leadership skills through volunteer service, and attend rehearsals and concerts.
Musical Storytime with the Fort Worth Public Library
Presents a 45-minute movement-based program where a musician enhances storytelling by performing pieces matching themes and actions in each book.

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s own Music Director, Robert Spano, is also an accomplished pianist. In this first chamber concert of the season, another star pianist, Peter Takács, joins Spano in a duet by Schubert, the Fantasie in F minor. Takacs goes on solo with a pair of works by Haydn, the Variations in F minor and the Fantasy in C Major, before nine other FWSO players take the Kimbell stage for Louis Spohr’s elegant Nonet.

SAINT-SAËNS: Piano Quartet No. 2
Mozart was so enchanted by his friend Anton Stadler that he wrote him both a full concerto and a chamber quintet for clarinet and string quartet. In January, join members of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra for Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet and Beethoven’s Piano Trio for clarinet, cello, and piano, a pair of works that showcase the clarinet’s agility and lyricality. Also on the program are Saint-Saëns’ Piano Quartet No. 2 and Haydn’s Divertimento à tre in E-flat Major.

RAVEL: Piano Trio in A minor
Beethoven wrote the Sextet in E-flat Major for the unusual combination of two horns and string quartet, with the horns functioning as a virtuosic unit and ripping up and down fiery arpeggios. The horn’s association with hunting plays into the next work on the program, Mozart’s String Quartet No. 17 (“The Hunt”), a lively, galloping affair for string quartet. The program concludes with Ravel’s Piano Trio, with nods to his Spanish heritage in its melodies.
