Following the lecture, students will participate in an interactive presentation of cases, protocols, and treatments on live canines. The program is open to DVMs (who examine the patient and prescribe treatment) and technicians (who perform the laser treatment).

The seminar consists of four, 50-minute lectures. The basic physics, an overview of instrumentation, common artifacts, and scanning techniques will be reviewed as well as normal anatomy and appearance of the abdominal organs. Wet lab participants will be introduced to basic ultrasound image manipulation (knobology), physics and artifacts of abdominal ultrasound, learn scanning techniques, and how to identify normal abdominal structures through scanning of live animals. Interaction between the radiologist and the participants will be encouraged.

Brief pre-lab lectures will use clinical case example videos to give participants a clear idea of the procedures to be done in the laboratory. Participants will then perform specific techniques that are taught in the classroom. Techniques will include placement of IV catheters including jugular catheter, jugular cut-down, cephalic catheter, over-wire, multilumen catheter, short catheter, saphenous catheter, intraosseous catheter, bone marrow aspirate, trans-tracheal wash, trans-oral wash, nasal oxygen, thoracocentesis, chest drain placement, emergency tracheostomy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and open chest cardiac massage, nasal and esophagostomy feeding tubes, abdominocentesis, diagnostic peritoneal lavage, and percutaneous abdominal drain placement. Course Learning Objectives—As a result of attending this course, participants will be able to: • gain vascular access and perform fluid resuscitation in any small animal patient. • assess the cause of dyspnea in companion animals and gain confidence performing thoracocentesis, tracheostomy, and placing thoracostomy tubes. • monitor critical patients using basic supplies • learn ways to train your team to triage emergencies and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. • manage nutrition in any critically ill patient. Cranial cruciate injury is the most common cause of hind limb lameness in canine patients. This laboratory will discuss the underlying pathological processes that contribute to the disease process. You will learn how to diagnose complete and partial cruciate injuries. This laboratory will teach you how to do a complete stifle exploratory examination for meniscal injury, meniscal repair or release, as well as extracapsular suture placement using isometric principles of the stifle joint.

Medial patella luxation is a common condition diagnosed in small and large breed canine patients as well as feline patients. This laboratory will discuss the underlying pathological conditions that contribute to the disease process. You will learn how to diagnose as well as grade medial patella luxation based on physical examination findings as well as radiographic changes that commonly accompany or contribute to the condition. This laboratory will cover common surgical techniques to correct medial patella luxation including - block recession, wedge recession, tibial crest transposition, antirotation suture techniques as well as soft tissue modifications.

Lectures will briefly review ultrasound physics and artifacts, and assist the participants in fine-tuning the image. Normal intra-abdominal structure will be reviewed and abnormal intraabdominal pathology will be emphasized. Wet lab participants will gain experience in completing a routine small abdominal ultrasound examination, knowledge of normal sonographic anatomy and appearance of commonly identified pathologies.

Total hip arthroplasty though effective, is often unavailable to many patients for a variety of reasons. Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy is a viable option in many cases to alleviate pain and restore acceptable function to the affected limb. This laboratory will discuss the underlying pathological processes that contribute to the disease process. You will learn how to diagnose conditions of the hip joint as well as assess patients for effectiveness of intervention. This laboratory will teach you how to effectively approach the hip joint, prepare the femur and make the appropriate ostectomy for successful outcomes with this common procedure. Closure techniques as well as common early post-operative rehabilitation exercises will also be included.

Limited Availability Cytology is a fun and helpful way to provide immediate information important for patient management. This presentation provides indications, techniques and basic principles of cytology from a clinical pathologist and oncologist’s viewpoint. There will be an initial power point presentation on cytology overview. Immediately following the instructional presentation, attendees will be divided into two groups and will rotate through microscope cases. Clinical cases will also be discussed in an openformat session.

Limited Availability Actual cases of anemic patients will be discussed in a group setting with the use of video microscope projection of the patients’ blood smear. The CBC results obtained from the in house analyzer will be interpreted along with the peripheral blood film findings. Each attendee will have the opportunity to view microscope slides from clinical cases of patients with features of anemia. Clinical recommendations, further testing, prognosis and brief treatment options will be discussed for each case.

This 4-hour lecture/lab will open with an overview of laser technology and its uses in general practice, tricks to get the best clinical results with the laser you have - or plan on getting - and some research on how it works and what it does. Following the lecture, students will participate in an interactive presentation of cases, protocols, and treatments on live canines. The program is open to DVMs (who examine the patient and prescribe treatment) and technicians (who perform the laser treatment).

Cytology is a fun and helpful way to provide immediate information important for patient management. This presentation provides indications, techniques and basic principles of cytology from a clinical pathologist and oncologist’s viewpoint. There will be an initial power point presentation on cytology overview. Immediately following the instructional presentation, attendees will be divided into two groups and will rotate through microscope cases. Clinical cases will also be discussed in an openformat session.

Advanced Registration It is strongly recommended that you register in advance for our 4th Annual GulfAtlantic Veterinary Conference. Registration is required for all aspects of the meeting. Your registration covers all CE sessions, access to the Conference Exhibit Hall, conference proceedings, welcome reception in the exhibit hall, all complimentary refreshment breaks, and lunch on Friday and Saturday. Registration does not cover ticketed social activities and wet labs. Wet labs and some workshops carry a separate fee, and attendees are encouraged to register for wet labs early to secure their seats. (Please refer to registration form for fee schedule). Advanced registration deadline is August 26, 2016. After this date, rates will increase by $80 for veterinarians and $45 for team members. Onsite registrations also carry the late registration fees. Contact the FVMA at (800) 992-3862; or by email at info@ fvma.org. Confirmation A confirmation of your registration will be e-mailed to you. Please contact us if any information in the confirmation is incorrect for timely correction of the error. Cancellation Policy Cancellation deadline for a full refund of registration fees minus a $50 administrative charge is August 29, 2016. Cancellations should be submitted to the Gulf-Atlantic Veterinary Conference in writing, and acknowledged by the above date to be eligible for a refund. Cancellations after that date and no-shows are nonrefundable.
