READ Program WHAT? DOGS CAN’T READ!
Of course they can’t, but they can be great listeners. The animal’s presence creates an inviting and motivating environment that is:

BUT WHY DOGS? For many children, reading challenges are tied not only to skill development, but also to anxiety and fear of making mistakes. A calm, judgmentfree setting can help children feel more confident as they practice.
SMILES Therapy Program
Dogs are ideal reading companions because they: • Help children feel calm and relaxed • Listen patiently and attentively • Do not judge, laugh or criticize • Allow children to read at their own pace • Feel less intimidating than reading in front of peers When a READ dog is present, reading practice can feel less intimidating and more enjoyable for a child. Trained volunteers provide gentle encouragement and support throughout each session. They help reduce performance pressure while providing calm, individualized support. In turn, Children gain supervised reading practice that helps build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension and improve fluency. Participating children can make meaningful progress in reading and communication while also building self-esteem, confidence and social skills.

Seeing children grow from hesitant readers into more confident, enthusiastic learners is one of the program’s greatest rewards.
Upon request, Fuzzy Friends Rescue takes shelter animals to area nursing homes. These visits offer residents companionship, comfort and meaningful interaction. Residents may hold, pet and spend quiet time with the animals. The quiet connection between residents and animals can bring comfort, joy and a sense of companionship. Some residents make toys or sweaters for the animals, while others look forward to offering them a favorite treat during visits. Even residents who are initially hesitant may brighten during a visit. Residents and animals often form a quiet, mutual connection, each benefiting from the attention and affection they share.
OUR FACILITIES & RESCUE
OUR MISSION Fuzzy Friends Rescue believes that animals, as living beings, are entitled to a quality life, respect and compassion. Since humans have domesticated animals, we have a moral and ethical responsibility to care for the animals that are abandoned or otherwise in need. We want to instill in our community an awareness of the animals whose world we share, promoting and encouraging responsible pet ownership.
OUR ANIMAL POLICY Fuzzy Friends Rescue is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization that cares for homeless and unwanted animals in a no-kill environment. We never euthanize an animal to make room for another, and we care for all those we take until they are adopted.
We try to place these animals in new homes with caring families as soon as possible. Some stay at Fuzzy Friends Rescue only a matter of days or weeks, but sometimes it takes months of care and rehabilitation before they are able to go to a new home. In some cases,
