GOLF MAGAZINE Dear Junior Golf Community, The Future Champions Golf Digital Magazine launched in March 2021 and aims to become the leading junior golf publication worldwide. This is an exciting time in the game of golf as the sport is booming on all levels. In recent years, golf was really only growing in competitive golf but since the pandemic hit and people’s interests have changed, golf has become the game of choice for many. In each issue of the magazine, we have goals to inspire junior golfers and educate parents on the process of becoming a great player and more importantly, how to love the game. We think golf is so important for families and wish every family could golf together for a lifetime. As a parent, what more could you want than being able to spend several hours out on the golf course with your kids for a lifetime. We hope you enjoy our June issue. Courses of a Championship Known for it’s beautiful scenery, world renown wineries, art fairs and jazz festivals, the Temecula area just north of San Diego will once again play host for the FCG Callaway World Junior Championship. The annual event has become one of the largest and most prestigious international junior golf tournaments of the summer. Normally held in Palm Springs over 12 courses the event moved to the Temecula area in 2020 because of Covid-19 restrictions that were in place. And, as more and more restrictions start to loosen and countries are opening, a lot of the top elite junior golfers of the world will come together for three days of competition. We’ll take a look at two of the courses of the championship that will test the skills of the not only the juniors, but all golfers of every level.

Redhawk Golf Club This top-rated California course will play at 7054 yards for the Boys 15-18 Division, features some dramatic elevation changes on a gently contoured layout. With amazing views of the surrounding area, it is also home of the famous signature 8th hole island green. Designed in 1990 by Mark O’Meara and his team puts more emphasis on accuracy than it does distance. You will find large undulating greens with bunkers guarding them on

a few of the holes. Water and/or trees border the holes so keeping the ball in the fairway will help with lower scores. The real challenge though, is the wind. Generally blowing in the afternoon the winds usually come from the left and could be as much as four clubs. There will be plenty of risk-reward opportunities that will definitely make for an exciting round of golf.

Temecula Creek Inn This Golf Digest 4-star rated “Places to Play”, features 27-holes of championship golf. The Creek and The Oaks nines will host the Girls 15-18 Division playing at 6057 yards. The two nines will play differently. The Creek has fairly friendly adjoining fairways with small greens but, will have a lot of opportunities for birdies. The Oaks has more elevation with more sloped green complexes. Tree lined fairways also puts an emphasis on accuracy. The one thing that is hard not to miss though, is the beautiful views of not only the course but the surrounding mountains. Regardless of which combination of nines you play it’s pretty easy to understand why Temecula Creek has become one of the favorite places to play in Southern California.

WELCOME TO THE NEDZONE! By Dennis Murphy “NEDzone, what is that?” you ask. Well let me explain....N.E.D. or No Evidence of Disease is a term that folks in the “cancer world” know and pray for. Because there is no cure for cancer, the best one can hope for when faced with a cancer diagnosis is to hear the news “your scans are N.E.D.” It’s a term that brings so much hope and inspiration to those batting “the beast.” Anyone who supports someone going through a cancer journey is an advocate for them, and therefore

a NEDvocate or an inspiring person that offers hope. I created the NEDzone in partnership with Chris Smeal, director of FCG as a means to share inspiring stories from people who have had cancer and those who have supported them. But why? Here’s my why, Jaclyn Murphy. Jaclyn, my daughter, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of 9. At the time we had only known cancer in the news and it was far removed from our family and community. We were so grateful to have the

support of the community, especially a local lacrosse coach that was able to get Jaclyn connected to a college lacrosse team. The team sent Jaclyn notes and pictures and videos (before Facebook or Instagram was a thing) and really kept her spirits high during her treatment. We went from being alone and isolated to having an entire new support system. One day, during treatment, a little girl that was sharing a room with Jaclyn asked her, “who keeps calling and texting you?” Again, this was before we were all attached to our phones without much thought about it. This little girl could tell that Jaclyn was in a different world, although in a similar situation, Jaclyn was pleasantly distracted by the calls and text messages of her “big sisters” on the college lacrosse team. When her roommate was taken for treatment Jaclyn told me, “we have to get that girl a team.” Well, the rest is history. Friends of Jaclyn started off as a means to connect children with brain tumors with local sports teams to bring them the same support that Jaclyn was receiving. Over the years we have helped 960+ families get connected with teams throughout the United States and Canada. Over the last 5 years we have expanded our reach to include children with all cancers and have also started pairing children with more “alternative teams” such as racing teams, arts clubs, Esports, the LA Opera and more. So where does FCG come into play? Chris, director of FCG, had heard about Friends of Jaclyn and wanted to find a way to help our mission. Chris’ mission is to help young golfers grow and develop their skills, but he wanted to bring another passion of his, helping people, to these young athletes. Chris introduced Friends of Jaclyn to FCG in 2015 when he worked with a coach from Hong Kong to get a boy from California adopted by a local golf team (Fallbrook HS) and the Hong Kong team. This was our first golf team, and our first international adoption. Chris took his passion and helped to make a difference in the lives of a family hit with devastating news. Over Your Round I’ve noticed something about a lot of the players I work with and watch. Whenever players hit a great shot or a really poor shot in competition, they always look at someone right afterwards. It seems that the reactions that are most important to them are either their parents or their coaches.

Believe in yourself anyways. See the potential of your round anyways. Be confident anyways. Believe you’re a great golfer anyways. The people who aren’t playing your round right now don’t have any control over those things. So, don’t give them the power.

Whose reaction means the most to you when you compete?

One of my favorite quotes is by Theodore Roosevelt,

I’ll tell you who’s reaction should mean the most to you. YOURS.

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

Although they are probably wonderful people with the best of intentions for your future, it doesn’t matter what your parents, your coaches, or your competitors think about the shot you just hit. They’re going to make their own judgments because they’re humans and they have brains. They’ll make the judgement through their own lens as a parent, coach or competitor. But their lens doesn’t matter because they don’t have to hit the next shot, you do. You have no control over what people believe about you and the shot you just hit. So there’s absolutely no point in spending time worrying about what they think. Take the power you have. Use it to course correct or achieve your personal best. Good or bad, this one’s on you. Don’t allow the people around you to dictate how you think about your round. This round is all yours.

You are the one in the arena, stop wasting time and precious brain power on the critics. When you let go of their thoughts and expectations, which you may be wrong about anyways, you can free yourself up to play your own game and perform at your highest level.

3 THINGS YOU CAN START DOING TODAY TO INCREASE YOUR CONFIDENCE:

Choose to believe you’re a fierce competitor, or that you’re a great putter, or that you have the ability to win any tournament. Tell yourself until you believe it. You can even put a note on your bag or your ball to help remind you. Keep commitments to yourself no matter what. If you say you’re going to get up at 6:30 a.m. to work out, you do it. If you tell yourself you’re going to put in 3 hours of practice today, you do it. This will help you to trust yourself and when trust is high, doubt fades away and your self confidence will increase. Imagine your future. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? How’s your game? How do you carry yourself? What awards or scholarships have you won? The more you look to the future, the stronger your belief will be that what you envision in it can actually happen. Do these three things and you will start to see what you’re capable of. And that’s the real game-changer!

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE FROM THE PAST, NOW PART OF THE 2021 NCAA DIVISION 1 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM AT PEPPERDINE By: Chris Smeal I got the text about a month ago when Joey Vrzich won the qualifier to get into the US Amateur Championship to be conducted at Riviera CC and Bel Air CC in Los Angeles, CA. I first texted congratulations and then immediately replied with “Who is your caddy?”. I knew we had a chance to do something special and I wanted to be right there with him to take advantage of this opportunity he created for himself by qualifying. Since the day he qualified we were texting back and forth about how we would prepare and how we would think at the Championship. First things first was to get his swing dialed in now so that he wasn’t in a mechanical state at the event or even leading up to it. I wanted to him firing on all cylinders too so the goal was to practice short game and play as much as possible leading up to the week. On the mental side the texts included thoughts of “Staying in the moment” and always a focus on “one shot at a time and let’s see what happens”. The practice round times came out and although I couldn’t make the practice round Saturday at Bel Air his uncle Marc was on the bag and did a great job checking and planning out a strategy at Riviera. Marc is an exceptional golfer and has been a huge part of the development of Joey’s game and his attitude about the game. A true asset to his team. I arrived Saturday night and headed to the USGA welcome dinner at Riviera CC and was a fantastic night with Joey, his uncle Marc and father Mike. It was cool to hear some of the history of the event, check out the Riviera Club House, see tons of former students and FCG Tournament players who grew up in our program. It was treat to hear from Mark Wahlberg and his passion for the game and his experiences at Riviera CC. He delivered a nice motivating message to players. I remember sitting there and being surrounded by very accomplished players, former champions of USGA events, major college events, and thinking - hey we are here, let’s get in the mix. Sunday’s final practice round would be at Bel Air at 7:10am in the morning so we all met for breakfast at 6, did a short warm up and headed out to start on the back 9. The practice round went well as we figured out a strategy for the course he had never seen before. The back 9 is very challenging with literally only one semi-easier chance at a birdie so we knew it was important to play very solid golf and get his lag putting dialed in. When we turned to the front we found several holes that he could score on and we knew that this would be his final 9 for a chance to make it to match play so we would have a plan depending on where we were at to play conservative or bring home the bacon. We both loved the course, especially the history of the course and the tunnels and elevator. To hear golf carts were designed to fit in the tunnels was pretty cool. The tunnels were so small I had to duck to walk through them and one was a good 300 yard walk. 28

Ok let’s kick off Day 1 Stroke play round at Riviera with our game plan of one shot at a time and let’s let the magic happen. Joey striped it down the middle on Hole 1 and missed the green with a 6 iron but hit a beautiful tough pitch shot to 3 feet and saved par. I loved this start to the round because he had to hot a tough shot around the green and make a putt and he was successful at both so I knew he was ready for this challenge. We were cruising through 4 with no mistakes and sitting at even par. Then on 6 the par 3 with the bunker he lipped out hole in one and had tap in birdie. A solid par on 7 and then another great birdie on hole 8. Walking off hole 8 Joey says’ Hey I think it’s downwind on 10” and I am like buddy we haven’t even played Hole 9 tee shot yet… that’s not staying in the moment and one shot at a time. We made a sloppy bogey on 9 and then on 10 we made a good bogey that kept us in the Championship. This could have been a big number except he hit one of the most impressive flop shots I’ve even seen. Joey bogeyed all the par 4’s on the back 9 and missed a short putt on 18 to post a 74 in round 1. This round got away from us and shot have been a 70 at worst. So I was a litte concerned heading into the final stroke play round cause now we needed a near perfect round at Bel-Air CC to make it. Round 2 stroke play at 7:20am was off and running with a solid par on 10 a brutal par 3 start. Joey plays great golf through the first few holes and them mis judged a long part on the par 3 and makes a bogey. This was tough cause he hit an awesome tee shot to a tough pin and we had no real room for errors today. The next hole he drove it 340 down the middle and left a 3 iron on the par 5 but missed right in the deep rough and made an impressive par. The next hole a three putt from the fringe and now 2 over par. He pars the remaining holes on the back 9. Walking to hole 10 I told him he needed the best 2 hours of his year right now if he wants to continue playing in the Championship. He hit two perfect shots on Hole 1 and lipped out a beautiful eagle putt but makes birdie. Hole 2 after a drive in the right rough and a tough 2nd shot he hits to 30 feet right of a tough pin, he three putts for a bogey. READ MORE >

Inaugural FCG Montana Championship May 22 & 23, 2021 // Canyon River GC – Missoula, Montana Blue skies, clean air with temperatures at 85 degrees. Snow still sitting atop of the surrounding mountains. Perfect spring weather for golf. Unfortunately, that was the weather the week before Montana’s first FCG World Series event. With the threat of snow, rain, strong winds and temperatures dropping below 50 in the forecast, the weekend was shaping up to be a challenge. When Saturday morning rolled around, all but the snow came. Along with the weather, the golfers came as well. Even from as far as Nebraska. The tournament was on. When round 1 started, the weather was relatively calm. Everyone felt that if there was a good time to score, this was it. Although there was no snow or rain the constant 15-20 mph winds helped to keep the temperature down, which made it a challenge for the players. In the Boys College Prep division both overnight leaders Kade McDonough (2024) and Justus Verge (2022) led the way posting scores +2, 74. By no means those scores were safe because, Tye Boone (2024), Conrad Chisman (2024), Joe Opitz (2022) and Jack Prigge (2023) all grinded out +4, 76 to stay two strokes back of the leaders. Arden Louchheim (2023) posted a +3, 75 to take the one stroke overnight lead in the Girls College Prep division. Kate Strickland (2022) found herself one stroke back after shooting a +4, 76. Aubrey Kelley (2025) led the Boys 13-14 division overnight after shooting a +5, 77. Carson Krauss (2026) came in with a +8, 80 to remain three strokes remain three strokes back. In round 2, the rain took over where the wind was the day before. As the day went on the rain never let up. Neither did Verge, who took the BCP division championship with another round of +2, 74 for a 2-day total 148. McDonough and

Chisman both finished with a 2-day total 150 securing their T2 finish. Louchheim maintained her overnight lead with +4, 76 for a 2-day total 151 to capture the GCP division championship by three strokes over Strickland who ended up with a 2-day total of 154. With no surprise in the Boys 13-14 division Kelley shot a +6, 78 for a 2-day total 155 to win the championship. Krauss posts a 2-day total 161 which was good enough for his 2nd place finish. The other champions of the FCG Montana Championship were Ed Bezanson and the entire staff of Canyon River Golf Club. The pro shop and restaurant made the players and their parents’ welcome. On the course maintenance side of the things, Jordan Hill and his crew did a phenomenal job in keeping the course in top shape for the tournament.

2022 EVENT UPDATE!

The 2022 FCG Callaway World Junior Golf Championship will make its way back to Palm Desert, CA and we are so excited to bring back some of the extra things that make this Championship so special and unique. In 2022 all players will have to qualify to compete in the Championship, meaning we will no longer accept players via resume for the 2022 event and beyond. Stay tuned for a complete list of qualifiers worldwide. Qualifying begins in August 2021 via the FCG National Series and World Series tournaments and with our partner tours.

FCG NATIONAL TOUR The FCG National Tour Spring Series came to an end June 5-6th with our Spring Series National Championship that was played at Temecula Creek Inn. Final Leaderboard > The FCG National Tour will pick up again for our Fall Series starting in Late August and will run through December 2021. The Fall points race is also qualifying for the North South Team Cup Matches.

FCG KBS ONE DAY SERIES Look out for a special one day event at the Lomas Santa Fe CC on July 12th. This is a private course located in San Diego and will be a great treat for everyone who competes.

BOYS COLLEGE PREP

Clark Van Gaalen Turlock, CA Class of 2023 Clark entering in only two FCG National Tour events this spring stepped up and had back-to-back wins. It was enough to catapult him into the top 10 of the National Tour Spring rankings. Which not only qualified him for the FCG Callaway World Junior Championship, earned an invite to the FCG Invitational at La Costa Resort. His consistent play and wins, makes Clark the FCG Player of the Month for May.

GIRLS COLLEGE PREP

Natalie Yen West Linn, OR Class of 2025 It’s never easy to make the transition moving up and playing in the next age division. But Natalie made the transition pretty seamless. After coming off two successful outings at the Las Vegas Championship in both the Girls 13-14 and Girls 15-18 divisions, she came out ready to play in her debut in the Girls College Prep division at the FCG National Tour Oregon Memorial Weekend. Winning the event after a 3-hole playoff along with her past play earns Natalie the title of FCG Player of the Month in May.

JULY 2021 Coming Up in July we have our biggest month of Junior Golf Major Championships with the playing of the 14th Annual FCG International Junior Golf Championship on July 5-9th that will feature over 600 junior golfers ages 5-18. Then just ten days later we will host the FCG Callaway World Junior Golf Championship that will also feature over 600 junior golfers. We look forward to hosting these major junior golf events and we hope to see you there.

AUGUST 2021 In August we have a lot of fun events planned, highlighted by our week-long stay at Omni La Costa Resort for the playing of 3 major championships. We will host on August 1-2nd our FCG Invitational Championship that is open to top finishers from the Spring FCG National Tour Series. On August 3-5th we will host the inaugural FCG Collegiate Series National Championship as a great preview event to the future home of the NCAA Division 1 Championships that moves to Omni La Costa in 2024. Concluding that week will host the inaugural FCG Odyssey Junior Golf Championship which is a premier event for our top 12 and under junior golfers. The winning players from each age division will win a custom engraved Odyssey Putter. The San Diego Junior Amateur returns to Encinitas Ranch GC on August 14-16th. This is a very special annual event and a very competitive field. Winners receive Champion belts. The month concludes with a special event at Oregon State University’s Home Golf Course Trysting Tree. This 36-Hole event is our annual Pacific Northwest Invitational. We will also have our National tour Summer Championship at the amazing Rancho Bernardo Inn on August 28-29th.
