With MTA WA CEO Stephen moir
As the world continues to battle against the growing COVID-19 pandemic, with the World health Organisation now reporting in excess of 50 million cases worldwide, it is rather surreal that here in Western Australia life is going on, almost as normal. the economic performance of the state has outstripped the dire predictions of March 2020 with the state recording a budget surplus, one of the only jurisdictions in the world to do so and while there are those who would argue that this has more to do with the iron ore prices than good management, it has to be acknowledged that we are the beneficiaries of very strong leadership by the Premier and this, along with the great attitude of West Australians to cooperate, is why we have seen this great result.
New car sales are performing at some of the best levels seen in recent years with October seeing WA record a 17% increase over the same period in 2019, the best monthly result in the last five years and one which would have been even stronger had more stock been available for dealerships. In fact, all states but tasmania and Victoria have seen positive numbers in new car sales as consumers look to spend their money domestically, purchasing new cars and taking on home renovations as a replacement to their annual overseas trip. similarly, used vehicle sales are up on previous years and encouragingly, the repair and maintenance of vehicles, which
prior to COVID was seen as a discretionary spend, is now seen as one that is necessary and automotive repairers are seeing strong growth in business. Caravan and camper sales have outstripped supply with dealers desperate to see manufacturing, particularly from Victoria recommence so that customers can take delivery of their new recreational outlet. When you match this with the fact that sales of toyota Landcruiser are on a par, year to date, with that of toyota Corollas, you can see that consumers are investing in domestic recreational pursuits such as travelling the state.
Limousine sector well down the one sector of the automotive industry that has seen business literally wiped out is our limousine sector where in one instance a highly regarded and long-established business, who would normally take in excess of 900 bookings a year, will take less than 90 this year, effectively seeing the business lose over 90% of its revenue as international and interstate bookings dry up. sadly, there will be no relief for this sector until our borders reopen and as I have said to both the Ministers of tourism and transport, in the absence of any assistance, business travellers can look forward to using an Uber as opposed to a limo simply because
there may not be a genuine limousine sector left when we come out of this crisis.
I am often asked how long this “bubble” in activity will last, and my response is that I believe we can expect to see this activity continue at least as long as the international borders remain closed and overseas travel remains risky. the estimates are that there will be over 1 million more Australians celebrating Christmas here in Australia in 2020 as a result of their inability to travel overseas for the holiday period. this presents very real opportunities for all businesses, but there is a cautionary note in relation to the need for a balanced approach and to ensure that the value proposition for consumers wanting to deal with a business remains reasonable.
Australians are keen to holiday at home, but they also want value for money and charging $100 per night for a campsite in the south-west won’t cut it in the value for money stakes. We all have a once in a lifetime opportunity to build our businesses through solid offerings of service and value for money and if we attempt to gouge our customers, as some sectors outside of automotive are, that will be an opportunity lost and one very difficult to regain.
While business conditions and consumer sentiment remain strong, there is one area that is and will continue to present a very real risk to the automotive industry. We
are now in the grip of a skills shortage that we have not seen the likes of since the mid-2000s during the last resource construction boom. the automotive sector has significant shortages in light and heavy vehicle technicians and in the body repair and paint sectors. As was the case in the mid-2000s, the resource sector would appear to have an insatiable appetite for skilled workers, particularly those with an automotive background but unlike the 2000s we don’t have alternative sources for labour such as 457 visa workers from overseas. In a capped market, our only alternative now is to train our future labour market by employing apprentices and trainees.
Both the Federal and state Governments recognise this and are offering significant incentives to engage in training. the state Government has frozen and, in many cases, slashed the cost of training places as an incentive to start an

apprenticeship. the Federal Government is offering the $1 billion job trainer program which provides a subsidy of up to 50% to employers to take on a trainee or apprentice for the next year, and this also is proving popular with employers.
the MtA WA has seen significant growth in the numbers of apprentices and trainees starting training in the light mechanical area and we are also now offering auto electrical, hybrid and full electric training to showcase the exciting opportunities that exist in our industry and to assist in the transition to new technology. the MtA WA held an open day at our Balcatta facility on October 24 and we had in excess of 150 attendees come along to see how the MtA WA trains and also look
at opportunities across the industry.
the MtA’s Automotive Institute of technology offers the most innovative automotive training program in the country and employers are now seeing the advantage of our program and how it works in with the needs of both the apprentice and the employer. the MtA has invested heavily in new vehicles to assist in ensuring our apprentices have access to the most up to date equipment and our training team are the most ‘industry current’ in the state. Now is the time to think about engaging a trainee or apprentice and I would encourage every automotive business to invest in their future and talk to the MtA about placing either a trainee or apprentice in their workplace to ensure that we have a viable workforce going forward.
so, WA is travelling very well in what is one of the worst
international crises in our history but we must remain vigilant to ensure that we don’t suffer the same fate that hit Victoria with their second wave. Good hygiene practices, careful social distancing and maintaining proactive cleaning regimes will all assist in keeping your business safe. I would also encourage every business, if you haven’t already, to develop a contingency plan to assist you to be in a position to manage through any future event that has the potential to disrupt your business. this includes understanding your cashflow and if possible, holding an operating reserve that can sustain the business for several months.
the automotive sector here in WA has navigated its way through this pandemic very well and we can all take pride in their work that we have collectively done, and let’s hope that 2021 will see smoother sailing conditions for all businesses.

the Motor trade Association’s Annual General Meeting and state Council meeting were held at the south of Perth Yacht Club on the 20th of October 2020 and it was encouraging to see a strong turnout of members attend to hear how the MtA WA has performed in what has been an extraordinary year. Despite the environment in which we are all operating, it is very pleasing to be able to report that the MtA WA has maintained its position as one of the largest, most effective and influential industry associations in the state and we have emerged from the crisis in a very strong position. this in a large part has come about as a result of the initiatives that were implemented through our three-year strategic plan and equipped the Association to be able to shift its operating methodology to meet the challenges that were presented as a result of the COVID–19 pandemic. the primary focus of the Association over the reporting period was and always will be the welfare of our members, particularly during the height of the COVID crisis.
I am particularly proud of the management team at the MtA WA who at the start of the crisis got straight to work to ensure that members who needed our assistance
knew precisely where to get this from. the MtA WA was the first Association to produce COVID-19 Management posters and information leaflets to assist our members to maintain a COVID safe business.
We spent every day during the crisis on the phone to members, checking on their welfare and offering any services that they needed. this included working with individual members on developing flexible work practices that would assist them in maintaining business continuity. Concerns over lease payments for the commercial property were dealt with, and the MtA WA was again first in drafting a standardised letter to landlords seeking rent relief, and this has resulted in saving members a considerable amount of money.
the advertising campaign that the MtA WA ran from late May reinforcing with consumers that MtA member businesses were fully operational and applying COVID-19 safe workplaces was well received by members and consumers.
Importantly the intelligence that the Divisional Managers received from our members
was invaluable in being used to effectively lobby government at all levels.
the MtA WA used the COVID period to advocate strongly on behalf of our members and working with our national office, MtAA, we ensure that critical areas such as the extension to the instant asset write-off program and in ensuring that Group training Organisations could participate in the job keeper scheme were addressed to ensure maximum benefit.
It needs to be noted that the MtAA is the only automotive peak association on critical consultation mechanisms with the Coronavirus Business Liaison Unit, Coronavirus Commission, treasury Department, Australian tax Office (AtO) and Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) among others and this ensures that our members’ concerns are raised at the highest levels of government. the MtA WA does not lobby by media release, rather we get on and do the work for our members which leads to the strong result we have seen over the past several months.
Members were also updated on the growth of the MtA’s media presence with traffic to our web page growing by 64% with an
impressive 179,466 visits. Our fortnightly engine Room web-based newsletter has been accessed over 14,000 times and we now have 1,773 Facebook followers and this along with our LinkedIn, digital and print versions of Motor has resulted in the MtA WA having a total reach of 250,000 over the last year. this is a great result and clearly demonstrates the need for the Association to continue to focus on the building of our communication streams to ensure that our Brand is recognised and valued by our members.

IF YOU were to suggest two years ago that a selfcharging hybrid would topple Australia’s favourite utility vehicles to ascend to the top of the 2020 sales charts, perhaps many would have laughed.
With this record having now been set (irrespective of the circumstances that have led to it), there is now undeniably an appetite for electrification of internal combustion vehicles.
toyota, honda, hyundai, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Ford, subaru, Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Mini, Porsche, Volvo and even Ferrari have all offered varying degrees of plug-in or self-charging hybrid systems within Australia. that’s before factoring in eVs.
In the month of August, however, it was the toyota RAV4 that took the title of #1 selling vehicle in Australia, with 92% of the RAV4s sold being the hybrid variant.

Notwithstanding the August numbers being skewed by the many backorders of this popular vehicle and the reduced supply of petrol stock, hybrid sales overall for toyota in the first eight months of 2020 exceeded the total 2019 sales.
In fact, American website Autoblog reported that “electrified petrol” (hybrid, PheV & eV) registrations in europe surpassed Diesel vehicle registrations for the first time ever in september of 2020. In the interest of fairness, it must also be noted that there are more subsidies, incentives and tax exclusions on such vehicles in europe than there are in Australia. In fact, other than paying less fuel excise tax as a result of reduced fuel consumption, you’d be hard-pressed to find any meaningful Government incentive in Australia as yet.

the MtA WA prides itself on a strong relationship with manufacturers, as well as their respective franchise dealers. As part of these evergrowing relationships, toyota WA assisted in providing training to the MtA WA’s Balcatta and Maddington training Institute (AIt) staff. Both AIt sites recently acquired brand-new toyota Ch-R training vehicles as well as a toyota Aurion at Balcatta. the Ch-R was specifically chosen in Koba specification in order to demonstrate the latest in vehicle technology. subsequent to toyota WA providing diagnostic hardware and training relating to the operation of the diagnostic software, the gap between vehicle and

repairer is now complete at the AIt.
such training is especially vital because AIt training staff deliver on-site courses, which include toyota vehicles, to both apprentices and fully qualified technicians at Balcatta and Maddington,. the dedicated training provided by toyota WA is highly valuable to the industry-leading AIt training team.
the MtA WA’s AIt is proud to work in cohesion with manufacturers, OeMs and parts suppliers to ensure that its staff are at the forefront of technical understanding. this in turn, ensures its students access the most cutting-edge specialised training.

The sensation that the all-new Audi e-tron 55 quattro provides for the driver can’t be conveyed by statistics, specifications, words, imagery or videos alone. The e-tron is a truly experiential machine. This is Audi’s debut fully-electric vehicle and the most significant Audi innovation since the introduction of quattro and, as such, there is a weight of reputational expectation that it must establish.

the singleframe grille is an Audi signature, and the headlight, tail light and vehicular silhouette have all been integrated into the latest Audi models more broadly. Despite a later release date in Australia, many of the current Audi design cues were premiered on the original e-tron concept. there are enough shapes, material elements and aerodynamic geometric patterns to signify its innovative electric nature, but not to the point of becoming an outlier.
When surveyed about future electric offerings, most Audi owners aspired to having a vehicle that would embrace the design, features and characteristics of the internal combustion Audi vehicles that they had come to love. so it stands to reason that the Audi e-tron 55 quattro is so “new world” in its nature, yet so seamless in its ability to bring the quality comforts and persona expected from Audi vehicles.
In essence, it won’t be too long before e-tron vehicles will be offered side-by-side with ‘equivalent’ pistonpowered siblings and choosing an electric powertrain will be as straightforward as selecting a safety or technology package is today. that being the case, the design couldn’t be a radical departure from today but it was always going

to be a symbol of what to expect tomorrow in the Audi portfolio.
Contrasted against the architecture of North Fremantle’s Leighton Beach apartment developments, the grille embodies contemporary and progressive design and integrates with the urban surroundings. this is best exhibited by my video review, which will be released imminently.
the undeniably intoxicating appeal of the virtual side mirrors proved too hard to ignore for bystanders.
Compact in design, aerodynamic in purpose and projected internally via two door-mounted screens, the payoff once you adjust to this new technology is crisp vision, even when raining, and beautifully contrasted night vision, diffusing the headlights of rear vehicles.
The Audi e-tron 55 quattro is a bona fide sports car, an ultra-luxury vehicle and a return to the most beloved and reliable engineering which 1970s and 1980s German vehicles were admired for possessing.
These are bold statements to make. However, if you review the automotive origins of the words ‘sports car’, ‘ultra-luxury vehicle’ and ‘reliable’ in their purest sense, you’ll understand why these claims are more than hyperbole. Stay with me, and you’ll enjoy the ride.

The virtual cockpit was one of the ‘hardest to forgo’ features when it came to returning the keys these were just two standout observations from my three day driving experience. the interior takes an investment of your time to fully appreciate the conscious thought that has formed its design. the brochure will tell you that the stitching mimics the design of a circuit board, but it takes a more careful eye to notice the consistent shapes that form the door handle cluster, the door ‘lock buttons’ and the spaces between the steering wheel cluster. the consistency of angles form a partnership that you admire the more that you use the car. After all, owning any vehicle is not just about the impression that it creates for others; it’s about your connection to it. Unlike most other material purchases, a vehicle is bound by the law of appreciating returns. As you move through time with your car, memories become

part of the vehicle’s DNA, and its varying benefits are appreciated at different times of the ownership lifecycle.
When I first witnessed Audi’s virtual cockpit in an Audi tt some years ago, it seemed like a quantum leap in design and safety. I’m pleased to report that since then the cockpit experience has been elevated to a new level, with the latest dual Audi Multimedia Interface (MMI) screens, which dominate the centre of the dashboard, allowing access to vehicle dynamics, settings, audio, telephone and mapping on the upper screen and hVAC controls on the lower screen. All included razor-sharp imagery and colour balance and were easy to clean when it came to finger marks. the virtual cockpit was one of the ‘hardest to forgo’ features when it came to returning the keys to the Audi e-tron 55 quattro. Driving at 100km/h and
attempting to change the temperature digitally took a little time to adjust to, though it was a learning curve that is necessary if you, like me, demand the absolute latest in technology.
the ergonomics, adjustability and tactile quality felt superb. You truly have to immerse yourself within the vehicle to understand what the hype is about, so rounding out the design review with the area in which Audi lead – lighting –is totally fitting.
When the Audi R8 showcased LeD daytime running lights as both a safe and aesthetically attractive feature, it didn’t take long for other Audi vehicles, such as the s5, to command a street presence like no other vehicle in its class. Now a ubiquitous technology, some of the greatest lighting innovations from both in and outside of automotive industries has
been shaped into meaningful and appealing adaptations in equal measure on this vehicle.
the Audi e-tron 55 quattro offers so much more than just progressive LeD indicators. the vehicle literally awakens with the adjoining of uninterrupted flowing tail lights at its rear and decoupled adaptive LeD headlights at the front. the puddle lamp alerted passing pedestrians that this was no ordinary Audi, in the event that they hadn’t noticed the virtual side mirrors. As humans, we are fascinated by the ocean, fire and lights and the incredible LeD technology taps into this instinctive side of us. Childish? No.
Mesmerising? Absolutely. The Drive
I mentioned that the Audi e-tron 55 quattro is a ‘sports car’, an ‘ultra-luxury vehicle’ and ‘reliable’ in the way that German vehicles of the late 1970s and early 1980s were. Before the overall drive

review, let’s break down the highlights mentioned; Sports Car: What do purists appreciate in a sports car? they love the smooth, unending torque coupled with a balanced chassis. emotionally, they seek that feeling of being ‘thrown back in your seat’ through outright pace. they seek a car that dares you to drive further. they want the brute force of a naturally aspirated muscle car, with the ability to carry the power and weight through the corners with composure.
the e-tron 55 quattro has that unmistakable and immediate electric torque delivery, providing the feeling of power that I could only equate to a high-pressure hose, prepped to deliver utter velocity the moment that you choose to depress the trigger. the quattro system, which, in this iteration, provides the delivery of power through the front and rear motors, achieves what

seems physically impossible, given the understeer often associated with its all-wheeldrive peers.
I can’t think of another vehicle with the mass of the e-tron, as well as stopping power that belies its weight, that matches its sportscar credentials other than the C6 generation Audi Rs6 V10. Of course, the Rs6 had an unadulterated ten cylinder engine (with that signature smooth torque delivery that sports car lovers seek) and brakes that could halt its propulsion in the flutter of an eye.
Whether it’s the regenerative braking system or the integrated brake control system that forms part of Audi’s dynamic ‘super brain’, what it achieves is nothing short of superb. For the every day driver, it urges you to make use of its e-tron electric identity by making rolling acceleration, cornering and negotiating round-a-bouts so much safer and controlled.
Ultra-luxury vehicle: Do you recall when manufacturers of the most expensive ‘road limousines’ of the 1970s and 1980s would brag about the ability to rest a pint of water on the engine upon ignition without creating so much as a ripple? Or the classic quote about the loudest noise in the interior being the analogue clock? those claims carry on through today,
The most common questions asked by admirers whilst reviewing the striking Audi e-tron 55 quattro on the streets of Perth were:
1. how fast is it?
Thanks to the mass media hype from one particular manufacturer of EVs, the public associate EVs with having the primary intent of achieving incredible acceleration times, which overlooks the many other pleasures offered by the e-tron that matter more on a day-to-day basis. That said, 5.7 seconds to 100kph in the ‘premium plus’ model is outstanding.
2. how much is it?
This street question had to be answered in context. Comparing it to its similarly sized internal combustion engine (ICE) siblings would be inequitable. This inequity has nothing to do with the fact that EVs are ‘more costly’ to produce, it’s all about the things that the Audi e-tron 55 quattro can accomplish in one vehicle drivetrain, which its ICE siblings could never hope to rival. e-tron variants start from just under $137,000 before Govt charges. The range extends to the pinnacle trim and exterior specification featured within the Audi e-tron 55 quattro ‘Prestige’.
although the prices for such vehicles exceed half a million dollars.
With no pistons to create vibration and a pure electric platform, your ultra-luxury experience is available in the significantly more affordable but uncompromisingly opulent Audi e-tron 55 quattro. In the accompanying video for this review that is being produced, you can truly hear the birds chirping as the vehicle passes the camera through a roundabout in Cottesloe. I can’t think of any vehicle, electric or otherwise, that can be factory fitted with 21” wheels and accompanying tyres but still eliminate

You’re more likely to still see these vehicles on the road today than their 1990s successors.
Well, this type of mechanical dependability may be back. the Audi e-tron 55 quattro takes highly advanced engineering and delivers it in a mechanically uncomplicated (ie fewer moving parts) vehicle that is driven by deeply researched technology.
Moreover, Audi has taken absolute control over as many components in the production of the vehicle as possible to ensure quality control.
as much road noise as the e-tron.
Underscored by the attention to detail within the cabin noted in the design section of this review, the interior is an equally powerful statement of accessible and useable luxury.
Reliable: the glory days are back. I can only speak to initial reliability in my observations, as well as common logic in this instance. the late 1970’s and 1980’s German vehicles that are referred to as “bulletproof” were perhaps the last generation of vehicles that valued uncomplicated and dependable engineering.
For example, the battery pack itself is designed and constructed by Audi. Imagine a block of chocolate with half a block of chocolate layered on top of it. this represents the cellular construction of the battery pack with a semi-tiered design, offering additional range over rectangular battery packs without intruding into the cabin space.
the sole purpose of Audi’s Brussels plant is to deliver PPe vehicles, a singular focus in future technologies that delivers the sense of confidence for owners in well-engineered and dealership-backed electric vehicles, supported by a proven service network. the Brussels factory is also “the first volume production in the premium segment
whether it’s the regenerative braking system or the integrated brake control system that forms part of Audi’s dynamic ‘super brain’, what it achieves is nothing short of superb.

worldwide to be certified as CO2-neutral by independent assessors”.
In essence, owners have access to the future, with the current service network and dealership infrastructure supporting them today. this is especially pertinent since owners will be transitioning to a completely new powertrain with Audi ensuring the experience is as pleasurable as that of their previous Audi vehicle purchases.
In short, you can trust that the existing service network, assisted by the research, development and testing processes that this vehicle underwent, ought to give you no more cause for concern than an internal combustion vehicle. It will take time to change minds, however, which Audi understand.
Desire (The electric stats and experience) the electric review components have been strategically delivered at the finish line of the review. Why?
Because the Audi e-tron 55 quattro deserves to be analysed on its merit and not simply on its eV stats.
the dual electric charging flaps, as they reveal the charging ports, are gratifying to watch. the battery indicator on the virtual cockpit encourages a desire to see how efficiently you can drive, or how spiritedly you can make progress without concern for range. One of the charging ports is for type-2 (slower) charging and the other is for CCs (rapid) charging. the charging system supports up to 150kw DC ultra-rapid, which far surpasses what you’re likely to find in terms of charging infrastructure.
Utilising the synergy charging bay in subiaco provided plenty of charge over the duration of a three-hour dining experience. As a test case, I also tried the charging station at Brighton Beach in scarborough, which wasn’t as rapid as the subiaco station, but sufficient nevertheless. I won’t quote charging times/ rates at these stations as these may not accurately represent their potential since it was my first time trying them.
It’s important to note that Audi offers home charging platforms and, if you don’t

mind charging overnight, some areas will support charging from a household powerpoint. however, it is not recommended to do so without consulting with an eVse (electric vehicle supply equipment) expert electrician. If you’re spending the money on the e-tron, the Audi home charging solutions are the clear, proven and certified way to charge the vehicle at home and it would seem senseless not to take advantage of this. to support the launch of the e-tron, Audi is offering complimentary installation of the standard e-tron home charger for every order taken before the “Retail On
sale” date and delivered by 31 December 2020.
And finally ... this is the most experiential vehicular product ever released by Audi. this isn’t just an outstanding eV, it’s an outstanding Audi. to truly understand the substance of this review, I would urge any prospective buyer of any luxury sUV to test drive an e-tron at Audi Centre Perth to experience what has been articulated within this review.

In addition to the intricate mechanical and electrical demonstrations, contributions of services and vehicles were generously made by:
• Westrans (A Diamond Reo DR-t7 540 hP 6x4 Prime Mover)
• V8 Drive Day (MtA WA V8 Drive Day holden Commodore)
• Wheels for Hope (Barbeque and cooking services)
• SP Tools (Door prizes, a live-stall and the sP tools Colorado)
• AIT Apprentices (Mentoring and demonstrations)
• MTA WA & AIT Staff, trainers and Management
After developing a hunger and thirst after touring the Balcatta Institute, guests made excellent use of the complimentary food, cold beverages and of course, the coffee van!
the ability for persons of all ages to see how training and employment services operate in real-life, rather than simply looking up careers online is highly advantageous.
When it comes to forging a career, candidates want to know more than an A4 career summary could provide. they want to understand what the training and lifestyle of their future career will be. the Automotive Careers Open Day provided this, in a way that only the AIt could deliver.
With the added advantage of current and previous trade Apprentices being on-site to consult on any questions that were posed, it was an ideal blend of demonstrations and information.
Given that the Federal Government has highlighted the ongoing skills shortages in the areas of “Automotive electricians, Motor Mechanics, Panel Beaters

and Vehicle Painters”, the MtA WA and AIt are working tirelessly to attract and retain quality candidates to the industry.
the ability to train Apprentices as well as provide employers with the finest of candidates through the Group training Organisation (GtO) puts the MtA WA and AIt at a highly competitive edge
compared to traditional training organisations.
If you are an employer looking to capitalise on the value of an Apprentice, contact the MtA WA on 08 9233 9800.

the Motor trade Association’s Group training department employed Colleen Little as a trainee Administrative Officer in 2019, due in part to her passion and determination to forge a meaningful career. Colleen grew and developed great relationships within the organisation and among the employers and apprentices that she assists within her job role. her talents were recognised when she was selected out of a significant pool of applicants as a Finalist for the WA training Awards in the Aboriginal and torres strait Islander student of the Year 2020 category.
Colleen’s finalist nomination was met with
significant excitement and support from her peers, all of whom had witnessed her commitment to completing her Certificate III in Business at the MtA WA.
Colleen belongs to a large, tight-knit family – a family where collective support is considered imperative. she has consistently maintained her commitment to serving her family after business hours and serving the automotive industry by day – a selfless accomplishment for anyone, least of all for one at such a young age. the uncompromising values of serving others were undoubtedly one of the traits that led her to be crowned as the overall category winner! the Motor trade Association of WA, the Automotive Institute of technology and Colleen’s family are immensely proud of her, for she is not only the WA Aboriginal and torres strait Islander student of the Year, but a much-loved contributor to society and

her community at large.
Colleen will go on to compete at the national level. however, she has already proven that she has a desire to not only develop herself but to assist those within her community to strive for more, too. this pursuit of growth and advancement makes Collen the ideal recipient and a worthy winner of the Award. As Collen stated in her submission for the Award, “I want others to know that if I can do it [establish a meaningful career], they can do it, too”. Congratulations to Colleen Little, the WA Aboriginal and torres strait Islander student of the Year 2020.

HAVINg PLACED FIRST IN THE 2020 TARgA WEST 130 CATEgORy
By A MARgIN OF MORE THAN 8 MINUTES AND ALSO BEATINg THE TIMES OF ALL VEHICLES IN THE TARgA WEST 165 CATEgORy,
THE gEMTEk EV RACINg TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE HAS ITS SIgHTS SET ON MORE THAN JUST THE OPEN CLASS IN 2021.

It’s BeeN several years in the making.
however, Gemtek’s Florian Popp and edward Kestel, pioneer engineer and vehicle owner Jon edwards and Driver/Co-Driver duo Jurgen and Helen Lunsmann converged on targa West 2020 with another electric assault, the likes of which have never been seen.
their first place in the targa 130 Category (130km/h cap) in a tesla Model 3 Performance is remarkable for several reasons, not least of all is the fact that they maintained the vehicle’s charge thanks to Jon Edward’s incredible charging innovations.
to have a stock powertrain electric vehicle outclass internal combustion tarmac rally heroes was what the team behind the car had hoped. And in doing so, they continue to bring awareness to the efficiency and real-world performance capabilities of eVs and the need for charging infrastructure.
equally astounding were the minimal changes made to the tesla Model 3 Performance prior to its rally entry. Apart from owner Jon edwards supplying 3 sets of race tyres, a 5-point harness system and endless race pads, a custom wiring to overcome tesla’s stringent safety system surrounding the factory fitted seating system was the only modification.
Charging and racing: How is that possible?
Step into Jon Edward’s warehouse wonderland, and you’ll witness some of the most practical as well as the most leading-edge renewable eV charging designs. these aren’t just concepts or prototypes however. these are fully-functioning DC chargers that can operate out of the boot of an sUV through to his incredible Canola oil-fuelled DC charging station that runs off used canola oil from the Arthur River service station kitchen.
Jon, Florian and the Lunsmanns planned meticulously to ensure that the supporting team and the mobile chargers were situated at key points, all the while having to
The Tesla Model 3 has had a decorated 2020, achieving the following finishes under the control of Jurgen and Helen Lunsmann.
• Highest place of 2nd and lowest 4th place in Rally Sprint events (4WD Modern under 3500cc)
• 7th Place outright Albany Targa Sprint
• 1st Place Targa South West Targa130 Class (World First outright class win in an FIA sanctioned tarmac rally)
• 1st Place Targa West Targa130 Class

comply with the road closures and limitations that the road rally creates. It would potentially be easier to create a public transport schedule than strategise the rotating charging stops that required the chargers to be ready at the start and end of each stage, but the team reaped the rewards by the finish line.
Why isn’t this charging infrastructure more widespread in WA?
Incredibly, the charger in the back of the electric sUV that serviced the tesla throughout targa West was also drawing power from the sUV’s battery itself, underscoring the fact that the DC charging system is no backyard project, but a highly professional grade charging solution.
Putting to rest claims that all eVs are charged by coal-fired or diesel power sources, Jon edwards’ solar and canola-oil generators/DC charging stations have shown that these solutions can also be renewable. he should know since he has paid for such chargers and placed them at various locations in WA with his own money.
Jon Edwards and Gemtek’s Florian Popp, edward Kestel and John Boyd have been demonstrating the potential of their charging infrastructure to major government, educational and private sector institutions. their iDrive Zero emissions transport Conference held in October was incredibly successful with attendees and

speakers including Federal, state and Local Government representatives, academics, multinational and local business leaders, fleet operators, green energy financiers, emergency services, Western Power, horizon, vehicle manufacturers, a Formula-e racer and even a big oil company’s mobility specialist!
With all of these initiatives being driven in the background, it’s clear that podium finishes are just the beginning for these revolutionary minds.
As education around sustainable transport and mobility increases, the Gemtek eV Racing team continues to demonstrate that Federal and state Government funding for charging infrastructure in WA is essential if these vehicles are to thrive in our vast state.

The team would like to acknowledge and thank the crew of about 10 volunteers from the Tesla Owner’s Club of WA and the Australian Electric Vehicle Association. “We could have done this without them as all of the mobile chargers had to keep up with the fast moving Targa itinerary, to ensure charging at each location where required during the event,” said Gemtek’s Florian Popp.

JOE CRISAFIO NOT ONLy SOLD GROWTH FRANCHISE BRANDS OSBORNE PARK KIA AND LDV, BUT THE GOODWILL THAT HAS CREATED AN UNDENIABLE LEGACy OF CLIENT SERVICE AND RESPECT.
WORDS: VIC RECHICHI

DID JOHN HUGHES REFUSE TO GIVE JOE CRISAFIO A JOB SELLING CARS BACK IN THE MID-1980S? AND DID JOE’S DETERMINATION CAUSE JOHN TO CHANGE HIS MIND, STARTING A 35-yEAR CAREER IN THE WA AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRy? ABSOLUTELy.

WhILe the sign on the landmark dealership will be different, the name Joe Crisafio will live on in the WA automotive industry, just in a lower key role and only after a well-earned holiday.
the 55-year-old has sold the Joe Crisafio Kia and LDV dealerships to Managing Director of Motor ezi Group and former AhG executive tony salerno.
the sale, which includes the entire 3.5ha site on scarborough Beach Road in Osborne Park, closes the chapter on 35 years of continuous work in the automotive industry for Joe Crisafio.
“tony salerno was talking to me before COVID about selling up, and I thought ‘maybe I’ve had enough and it was time to move on’,” Joe told MOtOR
“When COVID hit, we put it aside and then when we reopened in May we had the best five months that I’ve seen in the industry for a long time.
“I want to congratulate Joe on his success over his career and recognise the significance of his achievement as an independent franchise dealer. It is also no surprise that Joe got his start in the industry with John Hughes, as they share the same sence of pride in their dealerships and a total commitment to customer service.
Joe’s dealership has been a fixture in Osborne Park for as long as I can remember and for me personally, it is always sad when we have someone of Joe’s standing make that difficult decision to sell and take a breather. But there are very few people in the car business that don’t feel the pull to want to get back and I know that Joe will be back in some form and continue his association with this great industry. I can only wish Joe the very best for his future and look forward to keeping in touch.”

“I started thinking that maybe I shouldn’t be selling and I’ve also got my sons working at the dealership. But I realised the boom was not going to last forever and having someone who’s prepared to buy your business, both your franchises, take on all your stock and buy your building off you is a rare opportunity.
“I’m 55 and I thought ‘I need a break’. In all those 27 years I’ve been in business, it’s been almost impossible to have a decent break. I can’t keep going forever and my boys are still a little too young to take over, so I thought this a good opportunity to sell up, get out, and have a break for a while.
“My wife tracey also deserves this change. she has worked in the business for the last 15 years and has been my biggest asset and contributed so much to our success,” Joe said.
From skipper to master, thanks to John Hughes
Joe Crisafio began his career in the automotive industry as an 18 year old in 1985, despite failing to initially convince John Hughes to give him a job.
“In those days, you had to really fight for a job selling cars, it wasn’t that easy to get into,” Joe said. “John thought I should go fix cars or become a mechanic, he didn’t think I had the salesmanship in me to sell cars. After I had gone and pestered him four times,

I said I’ll work two weeks for nothing.
“Within 2 to 3 days he put me on the payroll and said ‘mate you can sell cars.’ John gave me an opportunity, which I was very grateful for, and he taught me a lot. sure he was strict but it was a good way to learn and to realise customer focus was so important, even back in those days, but more importantly he taught me how to sell a car.”
Joe learned his trade over the next decade selling used cars for John hughes and working with ‘Naughty’ Don Rogers and then at Young’s holden.
In 1993, Alf Barbagallo approached Joe and the two formed a successful 20 year partnership, before Joe decided to go it alone in 2012 when the scarborough Beach Road site became available.
Joe Crisafio’s immediate plans are to take a holiday,
but the Crisafio name will not be lost to the industry. In addition to sons Nick and Ben still working at the Osborne Park dealership, Joe plans to return to the industry he loves in 2021 in some scaled down capacity.
“I do want to work, I don’t want to sit around and do nothing. I’m enjoying it at the moment but it’s not going to be forever. I do want to do something in the automotive industry, but on a smaller scale,” he said.
“I still love the industry. I do enjoy the motor industry, the passion of buying and selling cars. It’s just something that’s instilled in me.
“the automotive industry has always been in my blood and I’ve always loved it.”

NORM tempest has worked on countless classic vehicles, having operated Booragoon AutoCare for 45 years.
Over that time, Norm’s seen every type of vehicle through the workshop, but has also acquired a firstclass collection of retro and modern classic cars.
One such car, this 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air, is as near to original as you can get. the 1950s allowed for bold imagination, eccentric styles and body shapes that even today’s most aggressively styled vehicles don’t come close to matching in terms of presence. Norm acknowledges that this Bel Air signifies the last of a classic era, explaining that “this was the last of the 50’s cars before the accountants took over from the designers”. As history would have it, that would indeed be the case.
Norm was in California about a decade ago when
the phone rang from a good friend, who asked hurriedly “Are you serious about buying a ’59 or are you full of it?”
Without hesitation Norm replied “I’m serious. Where is it and when can I have a look?”. It was an on-the-spot purchase that Norm will never regret.
the vehicle had been carefully vetted to ensure that it was original and would see out decades of drives to come. With the only real modification being the dual circuit power disc brakes, the ’59 Chev is a purist’s dream and the epitome of a ‘sunday driver’.
From the 283ci (4.6L) V8 to the powerglide transmission and factory air-con, this is an original unrestored Bel Air, subjected to no rebuilds or interior changes like most examples globally. “I don’t take it out every weekend, but when I do, I’ll often drive to Cottesloe and a lot of people

stop to admire it and have a chat, which is great”, said Norm.
As someone who appreciates Automotive heritage, Norm loves nothing more than a big displacement, naturally aspirated thumping V8 – although a supercharged, Walkinshaw Clubsport could be spied under a drum-tight car cover. Perhaps that’s a story for another edition...

JOHN O’DOWD IS PROUD OF HIS HERITAGE, BUT HIS WEST AUSTRALIAN RALLy CHAMPIONSHIP STORy HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LUCK OF THE IRISH. JOHN’S STORy IS A TALE OF PERSEVERANCE

and drive cautiously”, John explained.
Knowing that a hardfought attitude was what it was going to take to win his third West Australian Rally Championship title, O’Dowd and Feaver were ready to tackle the Darling safari Rally, the last event on the WA rally calendar for 2020.
Championship trifecta dream
hAVING founded, built up and then, after 30 years, moved on the overnight express company O’Dowd transport to give him more time to run truck Wholesale WA, John O’Dowd knows a thing or two about long hours, timed deadlines and getting from one checkpoint to the next in the fastest possible time.
With Co-Driver toni Feaver, who has been navigating and co-driving rally vehicles across the globe since 1995, John has been able to carve out a very successful motorsport career outside of his dayto-day work. No stranger to motorsport competition with 15 targa West, five targa tasmania and 13 Bathurst 12 and 6-hour entries to his name, not to mention rally exploits in New Zealand and Ireland, John has just completed his 120th motorsport event.
Competing in the West Australian Rally Championship, the current
weapon of choice is the Škoda Motorsport Fabia R5 (now known as the Fabia Rally2). After winning the championship in 2018, John took possession of the Fabia. It helped John and Toni win the 2019 West Australian Rally Championship titles, with the team even placing fourth in the Australian Rally Championship in 2018/19, proving that this vehicle has what it takes to take on the competition.
the Fabia R5 evo had a decorated career before John purchased it. Starting life as a WRC2 car in 2015, it won the 2016/17 AsiaPacific Championship and the 2018 Australian Rally Championship.
the Škoda R5 evo is a well proven rally winner, having won 700 rally competitions globally ... a considerable number of wins in an extremely competitive sport.
“the Škoda R5 really needs to be driven hard. It doesn’t really work well if you try
All that was needed was a second-place finish and the trifecta would be complete. since the Darling rally was a ‘blind-rally’, with no pace notes allowed for any drivers, it would prove to be an event that demanded what the Fabia likes the least; slightly defensive driving in the first stage.
With a more cautionary approach than John’s proven
‘all-out’ attack style, the Škoda regrettably endured a slow roll over after striking a stump and a rock.
“I just ran wide on a lefthander hit the tree stump and rolled, ” John said. The vehicle stood sturdy on its wheels after the tumble and miraculously the toll had inflicted minimal damage on the vehicle and its crew. even so, it was enough to render the R5 into ‘unraceworthy’ condition.
Although O’Dowd stated that it “certainly wasn’t the way we wanted to finish my 120th event”, the team have competed in 20 events and done over 2,500 competitve kilometres in the skoda R5 with no damage.
O’Dowd competed in targa West the week before in a 996 Porsche, with clutch problems on the Friday
dropping him to last place. Returning on saturday with a new clutch, the team eventually finished seventh outright, proving that John is obviously one hell of a driver. John, Toni and the team at Race torque have proven that they have what it takes to go toe-to-toe across all surfaces, drivetrains and categories. While the Škoda may be having a rest from competition for the remainder of 2020, that doesn’t mean that it’s taking a complete holiday. there will be some sponsor rides and testing before Christmas and the whisper of a tV Documentary in 2021. You can rest assured that John, Toni and the team will also be ready to attempt the tarmac and gravel season in 2021. Until then, we’ll be sure to let you know then the documentary airs.

COMMONWeALth Assistant treasurer and Minister for housing Michael sukkar MP has informed the automotive sector draft legislation for mandating access to motor vehicle service and repair information is imminent and will be provided for consultation in the next few weeks.
Assistant treasurer sukkar also announced that the Federal Government would provide one-off funding of $250,000 for the establishment of an industry-led organisation. this organisation will have the MtAA, the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association(AAAA), the Australian Automobile Dealers Association(AADA), the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Australian Automobile Association (AAA). the organisation will establish the necessary infrastructure and processes to facilitate access to motor vehicle service and repair information from car manufacturers, identify issues with
the provision, and oversight dispute resolution mechanisms.
the Motor trades Association of Australia Limited along with state and territory Association Members have fought for improved access to car manufacturer service and repair information for dealers, independent repairers, and other automotive industries. MtAA welcomes the announcements and congratulates the Government on their continuing focus on improved policy and regulatory settings for the automotive sector throughout 2020.
MtAA CeO Richard Dudley says the Federation and its members” advocacy efforts and constructive submissions and suggestions were instrumental in the securing first recognition of the issue, and then actions needed to address it.

there have been significant challenges and complexities in addressing this issue, the potential solutions, and the design and development of the legislation. however, the outcome is potentially world-leading policy.
Richard Dudley, MTAA CEO
“MtAA using intelligence from our business members nationwide and international knowledge and connections, demonstrated that government and industry supported access regimes in other global jurisdictions worked and will work here in Australia, “Mr Dudley said.
“there have been significant challenges and complexities in addressing this issue, the potential solutions, and the design and development of the legislation. however, the outcome is potentially world-leading policy and the commitment of the Morrison Government, and in particular Assistant treasurer sukkar, to act on our longstanding concerns is to be commended,” Mr Dudley said.
MtAA has been at the forefront of securing better access to car manufacturers information. First, with efforts to secure the first heads of Agreement between automotive industry partners in a voluntary scheme, and now the creation of mandated legislation and industry-led organisation to ensure the legislation is implemented.
Mr Dudley said the commitment of one-off funding by the Government is welcomed and will assist in streamlining the introduction of the structure and processes to support the implementation of the legislation.

We have had several major cases of non-compliance with the laws recently which have resulted in significant losses to vehicle owners, so that’s why a ban is being considered as one of the options for reform.
Lanie Chopping , Commissioner for Consumer Protection
LAWs that regulate the sale of motor vehicles on consignment in WA are under review with a ban being considered as one of the options. Consumer Protection has begun consulting the industry and community about the future of these laws, proposing three options: maintaining the status quo; strengthening the consumer safeguards and training requirements; or banning consignment sales altogether.
the consignment sale of a motor vehicle is where the owner engages a licensed motor vehicle dealer to sell their vehicle. the dealer undertakes the transaction on behalf of the owner and pays the proceeds of sale to the owner, less any agreed costs and commission. there are 985 licensed motor vehicle dealers in Western Australia, of which 138 were approved to sell vehicles on consignment.
Currently under the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, the rules for consignment sales involve:
• All consignment contracts must be in writing, contain certain regulated terms and conditions and sate in writing the amount which the owner should be paid;
• The dealer can keep any money they receive from the sale in excess of the amount they agree to pay the owner. At times this has resulted in unscrupulous dealers giving below reasonable value sale price estimates to vehicle owners;
• The dealer must give the owner a copy of the consignment agreement immediately after the agreement is signed;
• All proceeds or money from any
consignment sale must be held in a trust account;
• The dealer must pay the total net proceeds to the owner within two business days of receiving payment;
• The dealer must get approval from the owner to conduct repairs prior to selling the vehicle; and
• The dealer must pay for all warranty repairs after the vehicle is sold.
Commissioner for Consumer Protection Lanie Chopping said, for those who don’t have the confidence to negotiate the sale of their vehicle privately, selling on consignment is a viable option but comes with some risk.
Some risk to sellers
“When it comes to consignment selling, significant risk exists where unscrupulous dealers behave in a way that is designed to avoid transparency and to take advantage of vehicle owners who may not be aware of their rights,” Ms Chopping said.
“We have had several major cases of non-compliance with the laws recently which have resulted in significant losses to vehicle owners, so that’s why a ban is being considered as one of the options for reform.
“As an alternative to a ban, the current safeguards could be strengthened to include the stringent assessment of financial viability of motor vehicle dealers and specific requirements for fidelity guarantees and operating trust accounts to make the process even more transparent.
“the consultation paper considers marketplace factors, industry compliance issues and the effectiveness of existing protections around consignment agreements between licensed dealers and consumers.”
High profile cases the review was prompted by two high-profile cases involving the closure of Luxuride and the prosecution of PAG (WA) Pty Ltd trading as Xoticar. Consumers are estimated to have lost a combined total of almost $2 million from both of these cases.
Additionally, in August 2019 a caravan dealer selling caravans on consignment ceased trading resulting in losses to 24 owners of around $550,000.
“the consultation paper presents possible options for reform and seeks feedback from everyone with an interest in the sale of vehicles on consignment. this is your opportunity to have your say in assisting to guide future decisions involving the regulation of consignment sales in WA,” the Commissioner said. those interested in making a submission can view or download the Consultation Regulatory Impact statement from the Consumer Protection website. submissions can be emailed or sent by post to: Consultation on Consignment sales / Consumer Protection / Locked Bag 100, east Perth WA 6892 submissions close on Friday, 4 December 2020.
