When a hurricane strikes, its impact on communities can be devastating, making access to food critically important. Second Harvest is ready to provide essential services during disaster relief efforts. Our mission is to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry, especially in challenging times. Our team works tirelessly to deliver emergency food supplies, making sure those in need receive nutritious meals. We set up distribution points in strategic locations to facilitate immediate access to assistance. In addition, we support emergency services and partner agencies. Organizations such as the Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and the Salvation Army rely on Second Harvest for food supplies. These partnerships are crucial for a coordinated and effective disaster response. A key asset in our disaster relief efforts is our state-of-the-art kitchen. This facility allows us to prepare large quantities of hot meals quickly and safely. During a hurricane, when power outages and infrastructure damage can limit cooking options, our kitchen enables us to prepare and distribute thousands of meals to shelters and emergency workers. As an affiliate of Feeding America, we benefit from a national network of 200 food banks. This partnership ensures that food, water, and staff can be mobilized rapidly during disasters. Dennis James, Director of Chatham EMA, stated, “Second Harvest’s new facility is a crucial resource. Its strategic location and robust infrastructure support our community and emergency workforce effectively, ensuring a swift response and enhanced safety.”
