¿What is a B Corporation? The B Corporation aspires to be not the best in the world but the best for the world. All B Corporations measure their social and environmental impact and make a personal, institutional and legal commitment to make decisions considering long-term consequences of their actions in the community and environment. They assume with responsibility and pride to belong to this global movement of companies that want to make a change using the driving force of the market to provide solutions to social and environmental problems.
¿How to become a certified B Corporation? Companies that are certified as B Corporations are not perfect but assume a commitment to continuous improvement and place their socio-environmental business purpose at the center of their business model. The five most relevant areas of the company are measured and analyzed: Government, Workers, Clients, Community and Environment. This creates a detailed review of all areas in order to help identify all points of improvement and opportunities to become an agent of change in the economy protecting the mission and enhancing the triple impact. B Corporation certification is issued by B Lab a non-profit company in the United States. B Corporations redefine the sense of success of the company receiving a collective brand as market identity. We are the first sugar mill to have our sweetness certified as B Corporation For almost 100 years at Providencia, our approach to nature, education, and economic development has intertwined to leave future generations a place to live. Our management of social, environmental and economic spheres allows us to classify ourselves as a triple impact company. As for our social impact, it is based on quality education. Thanks to our programs, around 4,000 people a year benefit from basic and secondary education, technological and work training, early childhood care at Centro de Formación Integral Providencia (Providencia Integral Training Center), promotion of sports, among others. From our environmental management perspective, we work on the protection and preservation of water, biodiversity and threatened fragile ecosystems through Parque Ecológico Providencia (Providencia Ecological Park). Additionally, derived from our agricultural practices we received the International Bonsucro certification that certifies compliance with the highest standards in sustainable sugar and alcohol manufacturing. In regard to the economic scope, from this hub our efforts materialize in the production of sugar, bioethanol, renewable electricity and organic compost, among others; creating 3,640 direct quality jobs. We are proud to declare that we are pioneers in the development, production and commercialization of organic sugar. This product has been in balance with nature for more than 20 years in the national and international market.

Composted organic fertilizer for soil application At Providencia, the green sugar mill of Colombia we continue to make a reality the sweet and sustainable dream to consciously evolve and give back to nature everything that it provides for us daily, in addition, also strengthen our environmental, economic and social leadership. We have the Providencia Centro de Formación Integral (Providencia Integral Training Center) where we provide education for more than 3,800 people with fewer opportunities and Providencia Parque Ecológico (Providencia Ecological Park) a natural reserve with more than 420 hectares where, besides protecting the sugar cane culture we also protect biodiversity, threatened fragile ecosystems and endemic species in the region. We grow in harmony with nature every day, bet on increasingly cleaner processes, committed to reduce our carbon footprint, co-generate electrical energy from sugar cane bagasse and protect the most important and vulnerable natural resource in the world: Water.
For this reason, using by-products from sugar, alcohol and energy manufacturing, “PROVICOMP” ORGANIC SOIL FERTILIZER”, is produced. It is a product 100% natural derived from a composting process with multiple physical, chemical and biological benefits for crops. This product improves crop structure, stimulates passage of nutrients and preserves a high level of microbial life for a healthier and more productive soil. PROVICOMP is produced at the largest organic fertilizer plant in the southwest region in Colombia which has a production capacity of 80,000 tons per year. It grants agribusiness the possibility to reduce the use of chemicals in the soil and not only strengthen an organic culture, but also a sustainable culture for the future.

Green Guardians An environmental education proposal for the conservation of our natural heritage
At Providencia, we are convinced that development should not compromise meeting the needs of future generations and that all can contribute toward a more sustainable planet. Therefore, in 2018 we started the Green Guardians program an environmental education proposal aimed at children and youth with a goal to provide knowledge and develop skills on the importance of caring for and preserving the environment. Environmental education as a tool use in social awareness allows us to transmit information, teach knowledge, develop habits and promote values. It takes on greater importance during the life cycle stage of childhood in which cognitive learning and the foundation phase of personal and social development takes place, hence the positive aspect to children and youth knowing and establish a caring relationship and fondness toward the natural environment. During the development of Green Guardians some activities were carried out such as workshops, ecological gymkhana, vermiculture practices, school orchards, celebration of the environment commemorative days, identification of flora and fauna in their region and, most important, the reduction of the cultural practice of using slingshots which decreased the impact on various bird species. The children and young people who participate in this program belong to Toche village (Palmira) and Santa Luisa (El Cerrito) neighbors to Providencia Parque Ecológico (Providencia Ecological Park) located on the
west of the central mountain range which are part of different natural conservation groups as the Amaime River National Protective Forest Reserve, Las Hermosas National Natural Park and Nima Regional Natural Park. This way, children and young people in this region are the protective seeds of our natural heritage.

Recyclable sacks for organic sugar
At Providencia, we remain committed to offering our clients Sustainable Sweetness. This time, we offer new environmentally friendly solutions in our paper packaging for the exportation of organic sugar. Currently, plastic waste is one of the biggest sustainability issues the world is facing. Nowadays, our paper sack with a plastic inner liner represents waste for users as it is not possible to separate it from the paper. Starting in the second half of 2022 we will export our organic sugar in this recyclable sack giving end users the capacity to separate the waste source and thus, contribute to solving an environmental issue the world is facing.
At Providencia, we remain committed to offering our clients Sustainable Sweetness. This time, we offer new environmentally friendly solutions in our paper packaging for the exportation of organic sugar. Right now, plastic waste is one of the biggest sustainability issues facing the world and today our paper bags with plastic inner liner represent waste for their users as it is not possible to separate it from paper. For this reason, we have developed packaging that offers our customers the same functional solutions as our current sack with an advantage that the paper can be completely separated from the plastic thanks to special glue used during production turning it into recyclable packaging.
In other words, after using the sugar, the user will have the possibility to easily peel the paper off the plastic. There will not be a trace of plastic in the plastic, or vice versa, so that each material can have the proper handling to be recycled and not generate any additional waste. Starting in the second half of 2022 we will export our organic sugar in this recyclable sack giving end users the capacity to separate the waste source and thus, contribute to solving an environmental issue the world is facing.
