Providencia is driving development in Valle del Cauca by investing in higher
education for high-achieving students
Providencia supports young people in its community and the children of company employees in pursuing higher education through scholarships, financial aid, and partnerships that help ensure access to and retention in higher education.
Valle del Cauca, Colombia. February 23, 2026. According to the Ministry of National Education, the rate of immediate transition to higher education in rural areas was 29.9% in 2024. This indicator, which measures how many high school graduates from rural areas enroll in undergraduate programs, highlights the persistent challenges in ensuring equitable access to college, closing gaps, and expanding real opportunities for development.
In this context, Providencia has improved access to and retention in higher education through three areas of support:
• A college scholarship program for employees' children
• A program aimed at high-achieving students in its local community
• A system of semiannual financial aid designed to prevent dropouts among currently enrolled students.
These initiatives, along with strategic partnerships with universities, help build sustainable educational pathways that expand development opportunities for future generations.
College
scholarships for employees' children:
Providencia offers a college scholarship program for employeesʼ children as part of its commitment to the holistic development of the families within the organization. The program has 130 active, rotating slots, ensuring the continuity of the benefit over time: whenever a student completes their studies or leaves the program, the slot is assigned to a new recipient.
These scholarships are awarded based on academic criteria and are intended to recognize studentsʼ hard work, discipline, and potential. In addition to financial support, Providencia provides guidance and follow-up services designed to help students stay in school and achieve academic success throughout their educational journey.
Scholarships for high-achieving students:
The second program is aimed at high-achieving students from the Providencia area. For the past seven years, the company has been running an external scholarship program that has enabled 19 students to pursue higher education at top-tier institutions.
This initiative is supported by partnerships with universities such as ICESI and the Universidad Javeriana which provide free meals throughout their studies to enrolled students.
The program aims to recognize academic talent in nearby communities and promote equitable access to vocational training opportunities.
Financial assistance to encourage retention:
Para quienes se encuentran cursando estudios universitarios, Providencia ha implementado una tercera línea de apoyo económico orientada a fortalecer la permanencia estudiantil. Esta iniciativa se materializa a través de auxilios económicos semestrales. Cada semestre, Providencia abre una convocatoria pública dirigida a jóvenes del municipio de El Cerrito y el corregimiento de Amaime, quienes se postulan y son seleccionados con base en criterios académicos y socioeconómicos, garantizando un acceso justo y equitativo.
Each grant is equivalent to the current statutory minimum wage and can be used at the recipientʼs discretion, according to their academic or personal needs. Since its inception in 2022, the program has awarded more than 230 grants, establishing itself as an effective tool for supporting sustainable educational pathways.
