LEARNING TOGETHER

Learning together

Rules for remote work

Establish a daily routine for a working time on a timetable. Include rest time, meal periods, and brain break moments.

It is highly advisable to wake up, take a shower, and get dressed before starting working. This will declutter your mind and keep you ready for your routine.

Choose a pleasant space and turn it into your work area. This will help you avoid distractions. Try to have an ergonomic workstation (proper chair and desk)

Use exclusively your company cell phone (if you have any). Put your cell phone away. If you are busy, keep all mobile devices away.

Learning together

Rules for remote work

Make a plan with pending tasks. Set your goals and due dates on a calendar.

Keep in mind getting dressed properly. Dress comfortably but professionally.

Remember you are working and your cohabitants (family, roommates) should understand it.

Do not multitask while you are in a meeting. Keep yourself focus and concentrated.

These are the keys to successful

remote working.

NUTRITIONAL

TIPS AND H E A LT H Y H A B I T S

Nutritional tips and healthy habits

Functional nutrition

What is it, when do we need it, and how do we practice it? By: Pilar Serrano Galvis – Nutritionist and Dietist. Functional Corp. Technical Director. (Corporación para la Alimentación Funcional) Functional nutrition is not a fad, it is not a recipe, it is not buying nourishment with weird ingredients or magic formulas. It is an approach based on empirical learning that looks for the best way to adapt ourselves to the different manners to nourish our body. All the above, considering the home cooking and the processed food. This last one, which is attractive, nourish and in our days is offered as a comfortable, safe solution to our new reality.

If you learn how to feed yourself functionally, you will be able to choose wisely how much money you spend in a market. In some cases, you will save money and, in some others, you will have to increase your budget, since you are the one who decides the food you eat, the amount of it, and the time when you will eat it. All this, according to your age, type of work, physical activity intensity, and the most important, the food you like the most.

Although nutrition and public health are closely related, there are not nutritional politics wholly effective in modeling consumer taste and therefore achieve massive changes in nourishment culture. The only thing that changes consumer habits in people and communities is to learn how to eat healthily. This can be accomplished with the food that is produced to an industrial or artisanal level, or with national or imported food because it influences people’s body weight and preferences. (Warren, Smith, & Ashwell, 2017).

The energy measured in calories can be obtained from sugar, protein, and fats. The firsts provide from 2 to 4 calories per gram. Therefore, the more sugar, the more calories. There are also sweeteners, but they are not sugar so they are not caloric. Proteins provide 4 calories, and they are the most overpriced. Not only because food with this nutrient is the most expensive in the food basket, but also because of the process cells do, that comprises breaking the protein until its little molecules and then start building other molecules to produce calories.

Nutritional tips and healthy habits

Finally, fats provide 9 calories per gram. This is why people are “scared” of them. Nevertheless, they can be as useful as sugar if we do not damage them during cooking. The way we cook them is key on whether they can be a good nutrient good for our cells or not, because they will be later in our veins and arteries. According to the last national survey about the Colombian nutrition state, it is evident that a change in the population’s physical activity level is urgent. Families in which technology and screens occupy between 25% and 77% of their time is a detriment for their physical activity. This situation occurs almost in all age ranges. There are a lot of warnings about not exceeding sugar calories, even more if physical activity is not a part of our daily routine. For people with a major level of physical activity and sportsmen in general, sugar is the most important nutrient on a diet to guarantee sporting functionality. That is why constant consumption of sugar helps to preserve muscle mass and to minimize fatigue, and thus this enhances sports performance. ... But when do these calories give me a welfare sensation?... High-calorie low mineral proteins or fiber foods are considered indulgent. Eating popcorn when we watch a movie or giving candies our secret valentine for this month are indulgent behaviors. Therefore, these are calories our body will keep because they are consumed for a different reason than to produce vital energy.

Taking all of this into consideration, we can tell that we pick what we eat, not only remembering the way it works in our body and our metabolism but also minding our mood. This brings an additional environmental factor we need to keep in mind in functional nutrition: personal tastes and emotions of the consumers. (Kerin, Webb, & Zimmer- Gembeck, 2019). Reducing the intake of calories as a public health strategy is much more than just limiting the consumption of sugar. It requires nutritional education to learn that the present and future functionality of a consumer depends on a complete and balanced diet.

RECOMMENDED BOOK

Recommended book

The Fred Factor, by Mark Sandorn.

Today we have a book that, even if it was published few years ago, it is still relevant and provides useful tools for our work in the commercial department. It is The Fred Factor. The book is based on a real story about a mail carrier named Fred. He managed to impress the author so much that he decided to write a book with all the teaching of this humble character, and the extraordinary way he used to do his job. The book focuses on 4 keys, that being properly implemented in the company, therefore in the marketing towards customers, will bring tremendous benefits.

1 Everyone makes a difference:

This is a fundamental key to the success of a company. Those who work in a company should feel part of it, should be valued, should be loved, should be listened to, and should be considered… Is this happening in companies nowadays? To be honest, fewer companies have that in mind. That is why this is one of the issues in a digital transformation process in which we will work on internal leadership so that 100% of our employees never feel their work is insignificant since no work should be undervalued. A company should be concerned about making employees feel important.

2 Success

is built on relationships: Social networks are

based on people and their connections. Without them, they would not exist. Companies are operational because many people

work together to achieve a common goal. However, we need to improve the quality of those connections. This can be understood as improving and making more effective internal and external communication, benefiting the multidirectional communication between employees and customers.

3 Continually create value for

others: Content marketing is the best ally of this statement since it is based on the generation of quality content, not having in mind commercial goals for potential customers. It will help you to support your customers every day, giving you transparency, credibility, brand positioning, and recognition as no other strategy will get.

4 Reinventing

the already invented breaking Status Quo:

The company should decide what to do based on its customers. If the customers change, the context will change, changing the market as well. Your company must evolve rapidly to adapt itself to those changes. No matter if that means undoing effective processes from the past, they can always be better. Reinvention promotes entrepreneurial innovation improving different levels. These are the keys of The Fred Factor that you should apply yourself and the company. Always work to go beyond the customers’ expectations to reach excellence.

Providencia sweetens education with sustainable sweetness. In the context of the sustainable sweetness strategy, ‘Ingenio Providencia’ works relentlessly for caring and preserving the environment. Simultaneously, Providencia keeps excellent relationships with the nearby communities. One of the biggest concerns is education. As a result, the ‘Centro de Formación Integral Providencia’ (Providencia comprehensive education center) CFIP, a place where education is being offered to over 4000 people every year, was founded 56 years ago. Under an agreement with ICBF (The child-protection institution in Colombia) the program ‘Cero a Siempre’ (From Zero to Forever) attends kids since they are 2 years old, helping them from school time

to technical programs with the ‘Autonoma de Occidente’ University support. In facilities bigger than 8 hectares, kids, teens, and adults study in smart classrooms. This allows them to include information and communication technologies in their learning process. Moreover, to strengthen education quality, both specialization: Commercial Technician and Industrial Technician, have been articulated with SENA. Thanks to that, we can develop new skills in every student, getting them ready to face a competitive world. Having a big emphasis on bilingualism, the CFIP is an initiative that shines by remaining at the superior level of the State test. In addition to the daily work done in the CFIP and after listening to social leaders, Providencia released the program ‘Providencia Educa’ (Providencia Educates)(. Through this program, Providencia assigns three University scholarships for the best high-school students in Cerrito, having as a reference the State Test.

Providencia sweetens education

The scholarship covers the enrollment fee in the program students choose in any University in the ‘Valle del Cauca’. It also provides money to purchase a Laptop and clothing. In that way, students can access higher education in similar conditions to their classmates.

Furthermore, students receive a basic kit with notebooks, school supplies, and schools receive a school recycling center (Recycling trash containers) so that they can properly manage their wastes.

Another space that brings education together with environmental management, motivating future generations to have better environmental practices is ‘Educando Para el Futuro’ (Educating for the Future). This is a program released by Providencia 20 years ago. Through this program, Providencia trains students from the surrounding areas in good practices; including appropriate waste management, recycling, composting, and vermiculture, among others.

In this way, ‘Ingenio Providencia’ makes sure kids and teens who live nearby can have a brighter future.

During all this time, more than 3400 kids and teens in 28 schools have learned to reduce, recycle, and reuse with learn-by-doing workshops.
